I am very impressed at the level of depth this game provides. If there’s anything to complain about, it’s the fact that you can't 'manage-only' – you must race your horse.

Even if horse racing doesn't sound too thrilling to you, Gallop Racer 2001 is still worth a look, as it's a fun game on its own merits.
  3. A fine game – but it’s lacking the depth and realism that many of the more complex management type sims have. Those looking for a quick racing thrill without a lot of fuss will find a lot to like.
  4. 79
It's not necessarily a game that should be restricted to a tiny enthusiast base, because like any well-made simulation it has the potential to transcend its subject matter.

Like a Gran Turismo for horse-racing games…Only the dedicated need apply. [Sept 2001, p.145]
  6. This is the very definition of 'niche' product, but one with enough gameplay depth (particularly betting on the outcome of races and creation of your own breed of champion horse) and visual splendor to make it worth a trip to the rental store.
  7. It earns our admiration for simply being different and is likely to have everybody crowding around the television at your next party. [Nov 2001, p.105]
  8. It has loads of style, especially in the front end. If you tally up the overall features of the game -- such as the complete design, the front end, the art, graphics, and animation -- instead of just the racing elements themselves, this game comes out way ahead.
  9. Despite the wealth of options and considerable depth, it’s pretty much the same over and over again giving you little urge to come back.
  10. It's obvious that the game is geared toward the equestrian enthusiast, what with stats and breeding abilities and overall depth, but it won't convert the casual observer. The racing is strategic and toned down rather than an adrenaline rush, and this hurts game's crossover appeal.
  11. Those who do not have an interest in the minutiae of the sport of kings will likely find the gameplay to be dry and overly statistics-focused. Still, if you're looking for a change of pace in your racing game, there is certainly nothing else on the market quite like it.
