While I LOVE FF and all....this one was sorta bad in the areas that usually make FF games so memorable. For one thing, it was totally lacking in the plot area, and most of the time I felt like I was just playing to find out what new skimpy costume I could get the characters into next.

FFX-2 Is a trash game. It is absolutely intolerable from dungeon design, script, plot progression, voice acting, gameplay, core loop, to literally everything. This game should be burned and buried in a desert. I never felt like I wasted my time and life as much as I did playing this terrible game and I play some terrible games on a regular basis.

However, the epic story of Final Fantasy X is a difficult act to follow, and X-2 fails to live up to the bar that its predecessor set. In comparison to the traditional, grand, save the world storyline of Final Fantasy X, one can't help to feel that X-2 is just an epilogue to the epic story of Final Fantasy X and lacks the legs to stand on its own. Final Fantasy X-2 has a mission based non-linear type gameplay where the player will find themselves running through the world of Spira visiting old friends and tying loose ends while introducing new characters along the way. Many of these missions lack any urgency or sometimes any relevancy to the plot and I found my self lacking motivation to complete them, only trudging through them so that I could unlock the "true" ending (as a heads up, in addition to completing all the side tasks and missions, you must watch the entirety of every cut-scene or else you will need to play through the game again if you are going for the perfect ending on one play-through) . Those who played Final Fantasy X will find themselves in complete shock as to how much Spira and Yuna has changed following the events of X. I would go as far as to say a complete 180 degree turn from the serious nature of the first game. While this change of pace and lack of urgency might be refreshing to some, I felt frustrated. Instead of getting sucked into world of Spira all over again I just found myself asking why?.

While being more of a classic turn-based guy myself, I found X-2's take on the ATB battle system to be very fun. Players will find themselves switching between many classic FF jobs, around something called a garment grids which rewards players with various bonus's during battle for switching through different paths of jobs. The result is a flashy, fast paced battle which almost feels part fashion show, as each of the three main characters each have their own distinct look and style depending on the job.

Despite the lackluster story I can still recommend Final Fantasy X-2 to all but the most hardcore Final Fantasy X purists. The gameplay is sound and the storyline does provide some memorable experiences. However those expecting another epic in the same vein of Final Fantasy X will be disappointed. It is a nice conclusion to the Final Fantasy X storyline but in the end, that's all it feels like. The storyline of X-2 is nothing more than an afterthought, which in the end puts a damper on an RPG that contains some of the most fun exciting battles the Final Fantasy series has every seen.

I found the game became something of a chore by its third chapter, as the player is forced to re-visit locations and re-tread their steps several times not only from previous chapters, but from the first game. Graphics: Rehashed, same monster and locale models, the characters as well. This game was only made because of production value issues. The graphics have now become outdated. Plot: There's a plot? No way! It sure doesn't seem to have one. All I saw was a bunch of bikini-clad girls running around without purpose. This game has VERY little plot, in fact, it seems that the first half doesn't have any, much less the latter half. Sound: I cringe every time I hear the voices. The voice-actors lack talent; they have NO EMOTION in their voices. The script is TERRIBLE! I've never heard a worse script for a videogame. Anyone that thinks this game has smart dialogue must be 8 years old. As for music, it's horrible. The choice of pop has just ruined it. The battle music is drab, there's no really inspiring themes. Obersvation: I didn't see ANY singing talent that Yuna possessed in the first game, all of a sudden she can sing? Overall: The WORST FF game ever. Lack-luster plot, poor music, the worst voice-acting of all time. This game has very little to offer and is nothing but a money scandal. And there's more fashion transformations in this game than an entire series of Sailor Moon. Oh, this game is SO PERFECT, that Square's releasing FFX2: International, to rip you off even more. Expand

Here it is, the truthfulness of X-2... Has anyone else noticed that all the reviews rated 5 and below is repetitive saying it's crap and it has no story or that the graphics are outdated and the same. Secondly, the graphics are the same as in X, which when X was released it's graphics were ahead of it's time, other games are just catching up. Some people complained about the voice overs.... heres something, the voice actress for Rikku is a proffesional. As for Yuna, it's more lively compaired to X. I'll leave off on this. My favorite complaint was about the dressspheres and no weapons and armor. The good thing about X-2(and earlier FFs on SNES if you removed all equip) is that your characters stats rely on raw power and bonuses granted through the dressspheres. Expand

Not good as FFX, though. The gameplay turns out to be a classic gameplay of RPG. The Dress Sphere system iz.. kinda ok, I mean just like old RPGs where you can change your jobs. Compared to FF X, FF X-2 is very... shallow. The love story in this one just doesn't work. The main purpose of X-2 is seemingly to show off how "cute" Rikku and Yuna are. The graphics and music are very good as always but the plot is not up to par.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In all honesty I hated this game, they ruined the story for me and beings that's all I bought it for its getting a really bad review. To start off, the main character in this game has gone through complete lifestyle change after her religion in the first game was smashed (which to a degree makes sense) but who would go from being someone willing to sacrifice themselves for everyone else, to a pop star that is continuously in search of her lost boy friend? Now, if I can over look all the stupid dancing you focus in on the enemies, the main villains in the game are jokes, they want to be rich pop stars and are trying to steal the main characters identity? If that isn't bad enough by the end of those same villains are showing their good side and helping you out. Then there is the battle system, I'll admit its kind of neat, but the AI is always going to be able to make choices faster than a player, if it paused when you were making choices it'd be pretty cool, but as it is its just X's system that ignores the time it takes for players to make decisions, allowing your enemies to sneak more hits in why you try to select your dang attack. Finally there is the ending, the reason why anyone played this game was to find Tidus, that's what everyone wants to see, and after watching YouTube see you actually can, not that I'd have ever figured that out because you have to get a 100% completion, and the game really isn't enough fun to make one want to grid through it to get there.

So in all, I found the characters to be over simplified, the battle system okay, the story dumbed down, the music rather meh, the sphere grid lame, the recycling of all the environments to be rather lazy (except the villain that they rebuilt, that was cool, but most of the new areas were just hall ways that used the same tile over and over), some of the puzzles were good, but in all it just left me wanting more.

They also recycled all the aeons as bosses, and your base is a flying car... literally.

I could easily have given this game a better review if I wouldn't have played the other one first, but after playing X and then X2 you realize how much they recycled and then failed to produce a good story, this seems more like a budge saving game to milk people's money who loved X.

On the negative side this game has much recycled assets, a sometimes silly story and I recommend a guide because of so much missable stuff. On the positive side it is good recycled content, the job / dress system is excellent from a gameplay perspective and it gives closure for the story of the previous game if you do the right things. The story itself is set approx 2 years after the events of Final Fantasy 10. Yuna has done what was thought impossible. She ultimately saved the world of Spira from a death spiral but at a high personal price. However not all is unicorns and rainbows as the people of the world have fallen into different factions with colliding worldviews. The changes that came with saving the world might lead to disaster. Meanwhile Yuna, Rikku and the new character Paine are on a mission involving an impostor that leads deeper and deeper into a secret that can change the world. I like the story, lore and worldbuilding while fully admitting that there are really some silly / goofy moments (or moments of disbelieve). You can also get closure to some arcs, learn new stuff as there are still some surprises and twists. I think I am too nice here as fan because many other despise the story. What I liked is the job / dress system. You get spheres that give your characters access to jobs. From normal stuff like Warrior, White Mage or Thief to more obscure classes like an Animal Tamer. Some you can obtain through following the main story and others are hidden. All characters can use all costumes but there is one special one for each of them (Special conditions must be met before use in each battle but these costumes are insanely powerful). Remark: There is a Garment Grid where you have to arrange the dresses. These give another array of tactical options. Some have more spots to use and others have benefits like one / multiple basic bonuses / abilities, stat boost when changing jobs in battle or protection / regeneration. There are a lot in the game and some are immensely useful (Depends also on play-style). They used the standard active time battle system familiar in Final Fantasy at that time. It works well and there are some challenges here. Gameplay: My main complaint is that there is a lot of missable stuff. I bought a guide and it has 42 pages for side missions alone excluding mini games. I like finding hidden stuff and puzzle out some things but here it goes too far as some things are in the “They expected that we figure this out alone?” realm. They have an extra to do list at the end to get everything right. You will never get the best ending without a guide but there is GameFAQs for this. There are also a ton of mini games. There is a PR duel, a card game, Blitzball (different from Final Fantasy 10!), bonus dungeons and a shooting game atop on all else. Lets talk about the presentation. Like I already said they reused a lot of assets from Final Fantasy 10. This means everything looks and sounds good but it is still a bit of a disappointment. I think I will give my final rating. Overall this is a fun and enjoyable game with some weaknesses. It would not have been received well as main game. The story has its strengths and weaknesses too but it gives closure. The battle / dress / job system is excellent however. It is for people that enjoyed the prequel and for all others it is not a good game that I would recommend without warning that you need to know or have finished the first game. Expand

Yuna was an incredibly strong female lead for FFX. Honestly, she was the central character the whole time, and I consider her the main character. She made the decisions, chose the path they'd walk, and saved the world. She was shy and meek at first, but by the end she was strong enough to shrug off the chains of religion and destiny and shook the whole world to its core. She was a person everyone should admire, who happened to be female.

Yet in X-2, she's reduced to a fanservice character and valley girl. Why? I can understand wanting to have a female lead again after all these years (FF VI) but it was done so poorly. Like they wanted to make a feminist statement but missed the mark horribly. Yuna rants on about clothes and shopping and cute boys and treasure hunting. Gone and dead is the strong character I came to know in X. She's been replaced by this shallow child that has stolen her face and voice.

Not to mention the fact that the entire story was random butt pull after butt pull where things happen for no foreshadowed reason, since they were trying to tie the story to a completed, closed one. And for all the torturous turns it takes, they were pointless. The best ending you can get is the ending we already HAD after X. But with the beauty and subtlety removed from it.

So while I can't say it fails as a game since the gameplay is relatively solid, I can't ever forgive SE for what they did to the series with this entry. The beginning of a long decline and the death of my youth. I hope that XV's new direction puts an end to all of this. SE has proven they can't make what they made when they still had Sakaguchi. So maybe when they try for something different, we'll see better results. I trust the KH team, and eagerly await the loosening of Disney's shackles in the form of XV.

Final Fantasy X-2 is an average game in general, I recommend it if you want to see the consequences of the events of the first game and want a much lighter and happier game (despite having some small emotional moments).

The story has a 'prologue' to a show that is ok, but the first real arc in the story is pretty bad. The whole theme of hunting like spheres was okay, but the way they did it with those stupid LeBlanc interactions was pretty rough. Later on we have a context for LeBlanc and she becomes a more pleasant character (despite being tainted by the horrible presentation). At the end of chapter 2, the story takes a slightly more serious and less boring turn. The political issue for an interesting idea, but it didn't really affect Yuna's 'main' story. Personally I liked Paine because she is the only one who has a real serious tone to the main characters, but the way her story was handled did not please me (the story itself was okay). The Gullwings in general was one of the 'light' aspects that pleased me most in history. The game has some emotional moments, but almost all of them are due to the events in the first game. And the 'new' emotional moments don't have much weight due to the lack of 'context', focus and detail on the history of the past there (I don't want to give spoilers). Perhaps my main criticism of the story was that it has too much secondary content that has significant importance in the story or simply adds to it or the world, unlike FF X.

The fight is very different from the first game but I still consider it a good fight, but I certainly found it worse. It involves much less strategy, but more timing and reflex. This is not exactly a problem and only that when I play a turn-based RPG I want a combat as strategic as possible. The game has a new movement system, only in the last dungeon did I discover how to use the 'right' of the jump system, you have to keep holding the button (strange). But I admit that this system made it possible to add another layer to the level design (even if it was sometimes misused).

The change in Yuna's personality and a very complex theme, I thought it was kind of forced, for sure, but from what I had read I thought she had changed from water to wine but I didn't think she had changed so much. As for the design ... the face and hair I found peculiar, that '' 'strand' '' of her hair, especially the face, I just didn't understand why it changed.

A good OST like others is average.

Another thing was that the story had billionaire, even compared to Final Fantasy X.

Obviously I thought Good Ending was very good, but I recognize that it 'spoils' a certain aspect of the original story (100% True Ending, I didn't think it was so much better). And although I tried unfortunately I couldn't get Good Ending.

At the end of the day, I would say that this game was made 110% to farm on fans of Final Fantasy X, which at the time was a huge success and success (I would say unexpected) from Square. It is the second best seller in the franchise.

A very mediocre follow up to a stunning game. Unnecessary fanservice and it's ending ruins the entire legendary story of the previous game. Good gameplay though.

There was a graphic evolution compared to X, including more fluid reactions from the characters, but there was a great reuse of scenarios (many of them remarkable in X)
The battles are a little more dynamic and the dressphere system is very interesting and helps a lot with strategy.
But unfortunately the positives end here lol. There are two cutscenes with absurd good music. Very weak

Very weak story, it gives you a very good taste at the beginning and it could be something incredible, but it drags to the end. End just to leave a smile on the faces of the guys but it seems that it was a business put aside from the type (whew, we forgot the tidus, let's solve it here quickly).
Special dresspheres are pretty much useless in the end.
To miss the perfect ending, just don't sleep on the ship once and that's it, you missed a conversation at that exact moment the chapter ended. Don't even think about playing this game without a lap strap walkthrough and look before every step.
The game tries to pass something light, which I found super cool at first, but then it gets tired right in the second chapter.
Summary: The game at the beginning is very exciting, a lighter grip, lighter missions, but then the game does not excite. The story starts off very promising and gets a little disappointing. A nice game, but I ended up dragging myself to get 100%

Very fun game, but it was unnecessary, I still had a lot of fun with it. Yuna is waifu.

There's never been a Final Fantasy as free and as fun as X-2.
  2. Over-familiarity and stagnation has bred a cancerous apathy among gaming's cognoscenti. FFX-2, like it or not, gives players a reason to take notice again. [Jan 2004, p.98]
  3. A respectable follow-up, but it doesn't come close to rekindling the magic of the original. [Dec 2003, p.132]
