Devil May Cry supports an entertaining and vivid gameplay experience. I FIRST played this game in 2021, after playing DMC5, and still felt enveloped in the gameplay and attached to Dante. Highly recommend!

Played it for the first time just now (2015) so hard to rate it fairly. Would've been a 9.5 back in it's day, but even today I'd still rate it an 8. Great gameplay, boss battles and difficulty. A lot like Ninja Gaiden, the only downside is the annoying fixed camera positions, which can make boss battles that much harder.

Originally considered a spinoff of the Resident Evil series, it became bigger after E3 and was announced as its own series. It follows the Devil Hunter; Dante as he tries to find the truth out behind his mothers murder.

Now a recently bought the HD collection pack and some of the combat didn't age quite as well as my nostalgia goggles would of liked to remember, but it was also released in 2001, that is 13 years ago, but still the game play is channeling and rewarding.

As Dante you have a Devil Arm (sword/melee weapon) and gun at your disposal at all times. The guns have unlimited ammo, and its because hes a devil himself of course! You'll need both as you cut your way though hordes of demons and bosses to reach your final goal.

Combat is simple (compared to its sequels) but gratifying. You'll execute combos and get ranked on combat on a ranking system D-S. At the end of each chapter you will get a final rank on combos, time and damage take with score reduction on items used. This was brand new and gave a huge amount of replay value to the game, always wanting to go back and do that one chapter better or faster. Later games in the series actually had leader boards so that you could match yourself to other people on the internet to see how well you did. This took a single playthou game to multiple playthous easily.

Bosses are amazing, but can get repetitive as you see the multiple times throughout the game before you're finally able to take them down. Also on later difficulties you may see them even more often depending on how long it takes you to defeat each boss.

Characters in this game is amazing. Dante is a total badass. Hes a bit more serious in the first game then in 3 or 4, but he still will have his witty remarks. Trish who resembles your mother is pretty mysterious, you wont find out much about her until later on in the game.

Environment and enemy design is dark and unique. You'll find yourself fighting anything for marionettes to shadows and everything in between. They did a good job with the variety of the enemies. The final battle is breathe taking and its in a multipart fight.

Overall this is an amazing game, a must play for any action fans.

It's worth noting that, despite what I say in this review, this game is worth buying and playing. However, most consumers know this, so I'm going to point out a few of the game's flaws, and what people should be prepared for before buying this game. I will often compare this game to Resident Evil 4 in my review, for the reason that DMC started off as RE4 in development, but became its own game when Capcom thought that it was straying too far from what Resident Evil traditionally was. Despite this, DMC uses many of the same stylistic choices as RE4, making any similarities notable (especially considering that both games are amazing). The fighting system is fast and easily picked up. I love that I was able to play this game without many forced tutorials. However, this game should be played with the mindset of playing a Resident Evil game, meaning that you should CHECK EVERYTHING. In the first room of the initial castle area, there was a door that, judging by a glowing aura, appeared to be sealed. When you approach it, a hand comes out of the wall and attempts to damage you. So, it took me a while to figure out that you had to interact with the door and use red souls to unlock it. This is where a short tutorial would have been nice. Furthermore, the game controls can feel cumbersome when it comes to generally moving around. Because, in each room, there are certain boundaries where, once you walk across them, the ENTIRE camera angle shifts. This is arbitrary in most cases, but it can become quite an annoyance when trying to complete timed puzzles where there are several sudden camera shifts, as you often end up accidentally reversing direction and going back to the previous camera angle, causing you to fail reaching the end of the puzzle before time runs out. This is where Resident Evil 4 is superior, having a mix between third and first person. This allowed the camera to shift smoothly and comfortably. However, it should be said that DMC made that sacrifice in exchange for faster, more comfortable controls, where RE4 could feel stiff, despite the camera. As for progression, the game is divided into individual chapters, each consisting of a single short mission that usually has one objective, whereas Resident Evil 4 was divided into chapters that consisted of multiple strings of objectives. With this aspect, Devil May Cry would have been better off using save points scattered throughout the world, rather than only being able to save at the end of each mission. This can break the flow of play, but is otherwise harmless. The main character, Dante, is cool calm and tough, but is generally disconnected. If you weren't playing as him, it'd be hard to care about him. What you do know about his past (which you're told through bulky exposition) only serves the purpose of giving him some motivation, but oftentimes it seems unused. When Dante comes across any demon working for the main villain (who you know killed his mother....no that's not a spoiler, you find out pretty early on), Dante seems more concerned with acting cool and cocky, rather than angry and vengeful, as one might expect. Most of the story and characters operate on a throwaway, cliched plot that offers little. So, DMC should not be played for its story, but rather for its amazing gameplay. Expand

    Pros:
    - Superb enemy designs.
    - Gothic and horrific atmosphere.
    - Insane soundtracks.
    - Dante is a demigod in DT form. Air raid, vortex, inferno, meteor, and kick 13, so much fun.
    - Some enemies have unique DT forms which has never been implemented thereafter. I don't know why.
    - Due to the lack of boss numbers, the bosses you do fight are fun and diversified. They are all unique and don't overlap with each other. The 2nd Nightmare/Nelo Angelo fights are a little redundant, But the 2nd Phantom fight, the 3rd Nightmare/Nelo Angelo fights are awesome.

    Cons:
    - Cameras
    - The game is obviously designed with DMD difficulty in mind. The normal/hard difficulty are stripped down versions of the game without any balance tweaks. This causes some people to believe that the game is too easy due to Dante's DT form. But that's because in DMD mode the enemies will DT themselves and gain huge defense/damage boost(1-2 hits kill). And bosses gain HUGE health boost. I hate to say it, but if you haven't played DMC in DMD mode, you haven't experienced this game.

Some people say this title is lack in game mechanics. Sure DMC3 plays almost like a fighting game with everything it has to offer. But DMC is special. The more I played it, the more I like it. Its lack of "content"(mostly due to its short length, only two selectable weapons), it feels very focused. This level of focus will never be replicated because modern games have to be large. Director simply won't have enough energy and time to oversee every aspect of the game to make sure they are cohesive and adhere to his vision. Also, small games require less budgets thus can afford to do its own thing instead of compromising the for larger audiences.

Years later, I will still play DMC but probably never touch DMC5, and dream that one day, Dante will have a son, so the legendary continues(No I refuse to admin Nero's existence, I hate him.)

One of my favorite games of all time and one of the best PS2 games period, surpassed only by the third title in the series and perhaps a handful of other games. Stylish third-person action, excellent music, satisfying weaponry and incredibly cheesy dialogue. The secret missions are a pain and some boss fights are tricky, but this does not detract from the overall experience greatly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Devil May Cry is surprisingly very good for an 18 year old game. The combat is great, the enemies and bosses are very well designed, the game has a lot of replayability and I love the atmosphere the game has. I also really like how this game, and the series in general handles it's difficulty. You start the game on normal. It's a challenge but isn't too hard if you've played other action games. If you die 3 times to the same encounter you get offered easy mode. Once you beat normal, you unlock hard mode. The enemy placements are mixed up and the game is made a lot tougher. Then once you beat hard you unlock Dante Must Die mode. This mode is considerably harder than hard mode but is still very fair (Except mission 22. Screw that mission on DMD!). DMD mode really requires you to know how to use all of your moves and abilties which therefore adds a lot of replayability to the game since you're unlikely to get the most out of this game in one playthrough. There are a few cons in this game though. The camera. The camera is fixed so there were a lot of instances were I could barely see what was going on due to the camera constantly changing angles which would then sometimes result in me dying because of it. It also made certain platforming sections very frustrating because I couldn't adjust the camera to see how far the jump was or when I needed to jump. The story was ok but some of the characters weren't very well written. I liked Dante but Trish wasn't given nearly enough screen time in order for me to care about her. Also the dialogue was hilariously bad at times. Overall Devil May Cry holds up pretty well despite showing a little bit of age in certain aspects. I enjoyed this game and this series in general quite a lot and I wish I had gotten into it sooner. Expand

2º - The camera is very bad in my opinion, fixed camera is almost necessary in a game like this one, but with this camera specificly, most of the times it don't show the enemies you are fighting against, meaning that many times you will die by attacks that were impossible to se them coming.
3º - The story and characters. While i like Dante, since him, Trish, and the bosses are basically the only characters, there is a lack interesting interactions between characters, and the fact that Dante and Trish simply start to apperently love each other in the 10 last minutes of the game even if Trish was a traitor the whole time and was trying to kill Dante.

But those downsides really don't make the game bad in anyway, it is awesome and i highly recommend it to everyone.

They should have balanced out difficulty modes more gradually because the first few missions are very hard for someone who is new. If that makes the player give up and go down to easy automatic mode, it will be too easy and ruin the experience. Dante is a likable character. However his personality seems to change drastically from every release of sequel, probably because the development team changed frequently. I feel like its makers butchered this series by releasing 2 bad games (2 and 4) and not being smart about preserving Dante's personality. Dante in this game is not like anything you'll see in other DMC games. He is depicted as an outcast who longs for parental reminisces in a post-modern world that also has gothic elements and mythical monsters. As an unique setting as it is, it blends well with the style the game strives for, and the product is a masterpiece that reinvented its genre in early 2000's. There are other issues in the game as well, however. Camera can vary from being an annoyance to the main source of frustration, depending on the player. Dante's motifs are also very generic so it makes the tidbits of story the game contains even more shallow. Cutscenes are sometimes cool, but other times silly and even embarassing from time to time as Dante shows off or makes comments that would have been left unsaid. Overall, however, it is a great action game, and 8 is a high rating that I believe it deserves. Expand

Now it's way too easy and I can't switch back to normal), and it's pretty dark (but that's probably just a problem with my TV). It's a great game. I'd say it's still worth $20, maybe $25. Devil May Cry originally came out in 2001, and I never got to play it.. I was a little worried to play this now 17 year old game, but I was surprised to find that nearly 20 years later, the gameplay is near amazing.
Devil may cry is a 5 and a half hour long 3rd person hack and slash action adventure game where you play as the demon hunter dante who uses his business to get revenge after losing his brother and mother.
You meet a lady named trish who leads you to a creepy mansion to defeat the demon lord mundus.
Right off the bat the most infurating thing I noticed about this game that gets a little better as you play, but is still awful..
If that the game isn’t smart enough to releize player perspective has changed while moving..
When holding down on the analog stick to runn off camera for example, and youre now in a new room facing forward, youll naturally want to switch the analog to up.. however this game doesn’t allow such a thing to work.. you have to hold down when you want to go up while running off screen… or you have to make a it a point to do a full stop before changing direction..
Its literally the only dated bad thing about this game..
    The rest is great..
Its easy to see how this game went on to inspire games such as god of war or bayonetta…
The combat here which is a mix of melee and ranged is so fast and smooth… enemies take just the right amount of damage to not ever make this game feel like a grind or a chore..
You have melee weapons with different moves as well as guns.. the game gives you the option of playing normal and pulling off cool combos on your own, or an auto easy mode where you can button mash your wayh through the game, making this game fun for even the most casual of players.
Theres a even a transformation opportunity with demon weapons that you find along your journey that allows you to pull off powerful attacks for a limited time and fill your health.. and this meter fills so quickly that you don’t have to be generous with it.
This game isn’t afraid to give you a great compact adventure.. it doesn’t need to infulate its play time by constantly forcing you to clear rooms with spongy enemies, which im definitely tired of games doing these days.
The actualy gameplay itself is about exploring different areas which are sepearated by missions, slay enemies to collectr red orbs to upgrade your weapons, find colelctabels to upgrade your health, yellow orbs for continues, and find keys to unlock doors and occasionnaly take on a boss
    Rinse and repeat
And the game does a great job of making this never feel repetitive despite it being the same hook throughout
The world design is so intriguing that youre excited to push through the game to see whats around the next corner.
Im so glad I finally got a chance to play through this series.
If youre a hack and slash fan in any way go back and play this gem.
    I give Devil May Cry

Even at the time, it wasn't the greatest camera option in an action game, but the fixed camera positions for most of the game makes many boss battles, and especially the platform sections feel frustrating to deal with too often. This was likely as it was intended as a Resident Evil game. The camera doesn't suit the fast action at all. Due to this, it doesn't hold up as well as later action games that have since worked to improve on it, including it's sequels. It's still fun to play, albeit with moments of unintended frustration. While Devil May Cry may not be as prominent as it once was back in the mid 2000s, its influence is still felt to this very day in many modern action titles like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising. Games all about kicking a** and looking cool and stylish in the process. Close to two decades after its initial release, DMC1's age has definitely started to show more and more. What was once new and cutting edge (ha) is now seen as antiquated. In spite of that, however, I feel there is still plenty of good reason for one to go back and play through this game, even if only to see the roots of the franchise.

You play as Dante, a demon slayer with a b*tch'n trench coat and two pistols with unlimited ammo. A woman named Trish enlists Dante's help to travel to Mallet Island to defeat the demon king Mundus. The mission holds personal significance to Dante as Mundus was responsible for the death of his parents, so he instantly agrees to the task. You traverse through the castle, fighting off various monsters in an attempt to reach Mundus and put a stop to him. Story isn't particularly important for a game like this, nor is there much in the game to begin with. There are a few cutscenes sprinkled throughout the game, but the story takes a back seat for a good chunk of it, with only the environments and bits of flavor text really giving you any sort of context. What story is there is both 2000s level awesome sauce and incredibly schmaltzy. This is definitely the first game in the series alright. Dante had glimmers of his future character, but they were still trying to figure things out with him.

The core gameplay has you going from stage-to stage, fighting enemies, doing light puzzle solving and platforming. What set DMC1 apart from other action games at the time was its emphasis on style. Every time you fight an enemy you start to build up a style meter that goes from D to S. The more variety of moves you successfully pull off with more enemies, the higher the rank. At the end of each mission, you are graded based on your overall style rank, red orbs collected, damage taken and time spent in the level. It can be really difficult to achieve these higher rankings, and it's gonna take quite a bit of practice and multiple playthroughs to get there. It absolutely pays to switch up your play style whenever possible, not just for the sake of variety, but just because it's fun and cool to do. The combat in this game holds up surprisingly well. It's incredibly satisfying to go to town on a mob of enemies, whether it be with your trusty sword, hurling them in the air and keeping them up with your pistols, pounding them with fiery gauntlets, or using your own demon powers. There are over 20 missions in the game, but a good majority of them take less than a few minutes if you know what you are doing. You can easily finish the game in an afternoon, so it's perfect if you are just looking for some quick fun.

If you know anything about DMC1's development, its roots as a Resident Evil game are pretty obvious. The game carries over the fixed camera movements of the classic RE games, and the light puzzle elements in this game are just glimpses into the bigger emphasis it once contained. Whether or not it's original RE design also included the gothic architecture I'm not sure about, but man does it look great. Visually, sure the game has aged a fair bit, but the art direction, atmosphere, enemy designs and attention to detail is still top notch, and the satisfying sound effects and electro-rock soundtrack are just icing on the cake.

As I've said, though, the game has definitely shown its age, and nowhere is that more obvious than with the controls. Firstly is the platforming. It look and feels ancient. Dante's jumps feel way to heavy and you have no control over jumps once you take the leap, making a few sections of the game tedious. The control scheme in the original PS2 release didn't help with my muscle memory either, and Dante's overall movement feels stiff by today's standards.

Despite it's clunkiness, I still love going back to this game on the occasion. If you have ever been curious about the series' roots, or are just looking for tough, old-school action, this still comes recommended.

Devil May Cry is without a question an innovative title that has laid the groundwork for modern hack and slash, but it also has a very distinct, idiosyncratic artistic identity and vibe, which make the game iconic on its own.

The visual presentation, be it the architecture of the ancient castle the game is set in, the character and enemy designs, the menus, - is really bizarre, ornate, with details that only hint at some background but never indulge in exposition or direct symbolism. You're wandering the places and seeing things that weren't meant to be understood by you, that compose some twisted, almost alien world you don't belong in. The simplest example to make would be the orbs you collect as currency, healing items, and tokens for other game mechanics. They are brightly colored screaming heads, reminiscent of both the Behelit and Harry Potter magic candies, in appearance and meaning: it's not of our world, we don't and won't know how it functions and what's it really for. This surreal feeling, this mystique is all over the Devil May Cry and other aspects of the game contribute to it no less.

The soundtrack is filled with wobbly distorted samples of a cathedral organ, ballroom music, bell tolls, echoing screams and whispers, that all come together to create a cold, looming and pressing, yet wondrous atmosphere. That's for the ambient part, of course, because when the battle starts heavily mutilated, grungy guitars and breakbeat drums kick in (on top of everything listed prior, often), accompanied by gestures of electronic music straight out of some late 90s UK rave. It's enthralling, frankly, like a spell, both in tense combat and during the slow-paced exploration.

The gameplay is really hard to dissect sufficiently in a short manner, but it's enough to say that the combat mechanics are laser-focused, concise yet deep, and rewarding. Still, some options aren't realized to their full potential and may seem lacking in comparison to others, and the lack of convenience features does make the combat flow feel jarring and dated sometimes. Progression systems are thoughtfully tied to both exploration and combat, and a great part of acquired enhancements widen your arsenal instead of directly making you stronger, which lets you significantly improve as a player alongside your character.

Your character being Dante - possibly one of the most iconic video game protagonists and for a good reason. Having not yet completely realized his cheeky attituded, he is a mystery himself in this installment, as well as his rival, Nelo Angelo, constantly popping up throughout the game to test your skills. Learning their connection is sincerely tragic and gives some weight to the final encounter with the game's villain - the weight that the love interest plot fails to deliver. The story overall does feel somewhat barebones and tacky, mainly because the series has not yet found its delightfully campy and over-the-top vision.

Devil May Cry is a magical experience and a good game. It feels surreal in an arcane, mystical sense, to which every aspect of its composition deliberately and masterfully contributes.

For the gameplay combat is good to use is maybe not satisfying as kirby and the forgotten land's combat but I feel good when things click right the bosses I enjoy for the most part phantom is good, nelo angelo is great though his third fight can be annoying from the camera griffon is tedious and nightmare is great, mundus I enjoy but I really don't like his homing light orb move, as for the difficulty is somewhat difficult I wouldn't call it one of the hardest games I played but I say I do not enjoy to play the game on higher difficulties cause it make the game more a game of ignore enemies as much as possible more than anything and when I play DMC1 I enjoy much more to fight my foes but the game and enemy placement just force me to take the resident evil route which make sense consider this meant to be RE4 but is still a hack and slash game for the weapons alastor is great for mid range, ifrit feel good when I want raw damage, sparda yeah use it once and go to alastor for good, the handgun are nice but once I have the shotgun and granade gun which the latter I use a lot I only use them against nightmare and griffon, the nightmare gun is good but I only used it against the main phantom boss fight consider the rooms make good use of it's shots devil trigger is a solid mechanic a stronger timed mode that you need to keep combat to pull the most but really unless the enemies aren't a good choise with the grande gun I use it to get my charges.
My biggest issues with the game are the camera which is fixed but is sudden fixed which change the placement suddenly and it really become annoying over time, and the secret mission they either tedious like secret mission 5 and 8 or feel too short like secret mission 2 and 6 and well fighting the 4 bosses mutiple times get exhausting especially nelo angelo 3 which the camera really get me in off gaurdand I do wish dante was a bit faster he feel a bit stiff.
In conclusion I do enjoy the game but like I said it didn't aged the best I did try it on my switch due to wanted to try something new but I am pretty sure once I done with it after few more playthroughs I pretty much done with it, it does have decent amount of replayability but I feel the system should allow replay older levels without new game plus for those who only few items short to get all

Yes, the game isn't perfect (Capcom's notorious locked camera angles cause frustration again, recycled bosses and environments [another Capcom staple], small monster/weapon variety), but it is still worth playing today. The few times where were confused and couldn't figure out where to go but then I remember that Resident Evil level design where I have to find keys to door and door to keys and when I first got that into my head. I found all the rooms.

On the combat side, it is a good first step but I never really thought that it was smooth. I mostly used the ability to fire lightning in the sky because I just didn't want to fight the enemies.

The story is cheesecake and feels like it's just meant to set a foundation, which I have set about three to four times already, but it's just that kind of game. It's just predecesses to What is supposed to come later.

I am very happy. I played it but I'm not going back to it. This is just one of those games where the sequels are so much better than the original.

Is it the best game in the series? Of course not bc we have DMC 3 4 and 5 which a good evolution of this combat system. DMC has it's atmosphere which i'll remember

A poor camera that often leaves you staring at a wall, a lack of signposting leading to moments of wandering around aimlessly wondering where you are supposed to go and fighting mechanics which simply aren't as satisfying as more modern efforts in the genre (such as Bayonetta) all show the games age. As a result I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than perhaps those that were fans of the game when it was first released.
