But it's nonetheless skillfully designed to be relatively easy to progress through the campaign. The HD edition seems to be just a graphical update. The game aesthetics fit very well with the HD look, and it runs at a high solid speed. Expand

A poor camera that often leaves you staring at a wall, a lack of signposting leading to moments of wandering around aimlessly wondering where you are supposed to go and fighting mechanics which simply aren't as satisfying as more modern efforts in the genre (such as Bayonetta) all show the games age. As a result I wouldn't recommend it to anyone other than perhaps those that were fans of the game when it was first released.

I beat this game when it came out and just finished it again yesterday and it's still an amazing game. All of the game's elements combined really push you to beat the game's challenges. Yes, the game isn't perfect (Capcom's notorious locked camera angles cause frustration again, recycled bosses and environments [another Capcom staple], small monster/weapon variety), but it is still worth playing today. This and Onimusha are two unique twists from Capcom's PS1 Resident Evils and aren't for the faint of heart; if you can stomach the gore and prevalent horror then this is a memorable over-the-top action game worth playing. A good game at the end of the day, consider buying it but it does get a little boring and you could be playing it all day thinking it's the best game and before you know it you don't wanna play it anymore, also there is boss after boss which gets very annoying knowing all your hard work in beating them is rewarded with an even harder boss, very annoying!

I was extremely disappointed with DMC. After seeing all the 10s people were giving it I thought it would be good. The graphics and sound are nice, but that's the only thing I like about it. The few times where were confused and couldn't figure out where to go but then I remember that Resident Evil level design where I have to find keys to door and door to keys and when I first got that into my head. I found all the rooms.

On the combat side, it is a good first step but I never really thought that it was smooth. I mostly used the ability to fire lightning in the sky because I just didn't want to fight the enemies.

The story is cheesecake and feels like it's just meant to set a foundation, which I have set about three to four times already, but it's just that kind of game. It's just predecesses to What is supposed to come later.

I am very happy. I played it but I'm not going back to it. This is just one of those games where the sequels are so much better than the original.

In the end, this first game in this saga left me somewhat disappointed.

The first Devil May Cry game is an acquired taste. If you were introduced to the series when it took a more over-the-top action hack 'n' slash with cool combos direction, this first entry isn't really going to impress. Obviously good game but it has rubbish plot and characters. Battle system is good but the third and etc parts has a way good combats. Is it classic? Yea. Is it a good game? Yea. Is it the best game in the series? Of course not bc we have DMC 3 4 and 5 which a good evolution of this combat system. DMC has it's atmosphere which i'll remember

No nostalgia here, I beat it last year. The game wasn't bad. The bosses are fun, the setting is pretty creepy and Dante is a cool pretty boy. The camera is a bit weird at time, but I understand. Apparently this was the original design to RE4 or something? If so that's awesome.

for the first of it's kind devil may cry is definitely innovative, although for todays standards pretty outdated, the soundtrack is still very good but i definitely think that the game is a bit overrated due to lacking gameplay, confusing tasks and boring enemies which makes the game lack character and just makes it an edgy 2000's ****

With the exception of a rather throwaway plot, absolutely no part of Devil May Cry escapes the realm of coolness superior. [Nov 2001, p.152]
  2. A groundbreaking title that takes the genre in a new and exciting direction. Capcom has once again managed to breathe life into a genre that had been stuck in something of a rut of late.
