At the same time, however, the pacing leads to a game that throws a barrage of stuff at you every 2 minutes without any rhyme or reason, making it somehow overstimulating at the same time. Even the story is confusing. Most of it is only told to you in the second campaign, yet it's all still relevant during the first, meaning you spend the first campaign confused about what's even going on. Don't get me wrong, it's not as if this game is unplayable, but i still consider it a failure on every single aspect possible. Expand

Every level is unnecessarily large and difficult to navigate, the levels are drab and lack any distinctive features, every level is dark and ugly to look at and every level is insanely boring to play through. Enemy encounters all play out exactly the same and range from so easy I entirely forgot them to so frustrating I wish I could forget them. Devil Trigger is barely useful and often tedious to use, and the amulets which you can equip to change how Devil Trigger works are far and few and are uninteresting. Bosses have absurd amounts of health and are insanely boring to fight. Controls are clunky and unpolished. The sound mixing is some of the worst I've ever heard in a video-game, everything is so obnoxiously loud that every sound effect is constantly clashing with one another and the awful soundtrack only adds to the chaotic noise that your TV speakers are forced to vomit out. All weapons feel exactly the same and offer no distinctive game-play changes. The soundtrack is so forgettable and ineffective at conveying any form of significant emotion that I legitimately could not even slightly recall a single song from the game if I tried. Your character, every enemy, every action-sequence, every cut-scene is slow – this game is so slow, and it never stops being annoying. Guns are incredibly over-powered and basically ruin every single enemy encounter in the game. Saying the story is unfinished would be an understatement, because I don't think a story exists at all - every character is so soulless, awkward and poorly written that it feels like some creepy Twilight Zone **** , events and things just happen for no real reason and every cut-scene is so far and few and disjointed from each other it's hard to keep track of anything that happens at all. The story is completely unrelated to any of the other games as well, it's so unimportant and meaningless that they keep lazily slotting it in different points in the DMC timeline whenever necessary over and over again, I don't know why they even bother acknowledging this games existence. The atmosphere that permeates throughout the whole game is really uncomfortable, eerie and off-putting, and it makes for a really unpleasant experience throughout - the game lacks any personality or charm. If video-games had a body and soul, DMC2 would be a decaying corpse. The closest thing to a positive I can give this game is that the final boss is kind of cool, but that doesn't even matter all that much because you can easily defeat by spamming the same weapon you've been spamming the entire game anyways.

It’s a miracle this game didn’t completely undermine the series for good.

One that I would find difficult for even the most hardcore fans to defend or even say that it's their favorite. Everything that made the original fun and memorable has been completely stripped away. It's obvious that whoever was originally put in charge of development had absolutely no clue what made the original great, and despite Hideaki Itsuno coming in at the tail end of development in an attempt to make it salvageable, it ultimately didn't save the game and it damn near killed the series.

The story functions about the same as it did in the original. Dante, along with newcomer Lucia, are tasked with defeating the super bad evil guy and save the world. However, there is one big change added that sets it apart from the original: it's not fun. For as schmaltzy as DMC1 got, there's a level of loveable camp to it that made it so enjoyable. Dante was a bit of a smart ass, cracking jokes at the bosses and just looking like he was having fun with it all. Dante in this game is as flaccid as soggy cardboard. He says so little, and what little he does say is not the least bit memorable. Lucia isn't much better, and the villain Arius? Such a cliché, inconsequential, forgettable villain.

What's worse than a more boring story? Boring gameplay. Structurally, it's identical to the first game. You go level-to-level, fight enemies and beat the boss. However, gone is the challenge and complexity of DMC1, and what we are left with is an absurdly easy, watered down imitator. The enemies are basic to the point of being brain dead, and boss fights are downright pathetic. These enemies are so boring, that you'd be tempted to just run through entire levels without ever fighting them (unless you are required to). You no longer get higher ranks by performing more stylishly in combat, but rather just keep wailing on the enemies/dodging long enough to raise it, leaving so little incentive to want to very up your moveset (what little there is) beyond just trying to stay awake. Oh, sure, you do have a bit more by the way of acrobatics like wall running and shooting your pistols straight down while in the air, but not once do these new abilities ever get utilized in any meaningful way. Speaking of pistols, those alone are gonna help you win the game. They are incredibly overpowered. I'd say almost every enemy and boss you encounter can be beaten with just your pistols alone. If you wanna get through the game much quicker, upgrade those as early as possible. What about the levels themselves? Bland and overly spacious. The sick gothic architecture and atmosphere of the original is replaced with mostly dirty browns. Many of the levels are also way too dark to properly see in (even worse if you are playing an original PS2 copy on a modern TV), and far too big with little to show for it.

Is there anything the game does get right? Well, I mean it's at least functional. Nothing is absolutely broken or game-breaking. The game was also the first to introduce the concept of Bloody Palace, which would be refined and more fun in later entries. The music, while not as memorable as the original, still has some really solid tracks and is certainly the best part of the whole game. Otherwise, Devil May Cry 2 is just an absolute bore. You are far better off skipping this one.

The one good thing about this game is that it gave Capcom a clear idea of which direction not to go in. Being a hasty sequel trying to catch up to the success of the first game and having a ruckus in the development cycle, Devil May Cry 2 fails to deliver in pretty much every respect.

The visual style is clearly inspired by the original but lacks cohesion and often times looks incredibly bland, cheap, and lifeless, often giving a player a hard time telling the enemies from the environment. This makes terrible mission design, full of needless backtracking, so much more painful. That being said, I think, the idea of exploring the downtown of a major city infested with demons as well as an old ethnic town over a cliff was in a way creative, even if not realized successfully.

Dante's looks, as well as his demeanor, are changed to some unclear "more serious" vibe, which robs him of any personality. The design of the second protagonist, Lucia, and her writing is really lackluster too, making her one of the most uninteresting focal characters I've seen in a videogame. This contributes heavily to making the plot feel as unessential to the experience, as this installment is to the series.

By far the worst offender, of course, is simplified in all the wrong ways, disjointed combat, including the all but non-existent enemy AI. It makes the hack and slash gameplay extremely mindless and forgettable, which is probably for the better. The swordplay itself is hard to call completely broken, so you might have occasional fun, but I wouldn't bet on that.

It's redeeming how short this experience is because it's one of the worst ones I've ever had in gaming. The few places in which someone tried to work hard at this game are lost in the sea of uninspired garbage, and it can safely be recommended to skip this game in one's Devil May Cry journey, as Capcom had the mercy to make its story completely inconsequential.

Being a hardcore DMC fan, this game....has no reason to exist. It adds nothing to the storyline of DMC, the combat is boring, the level design is pretty dull and unimaginative, and the bosses are a joke, one hour playing it and I got so bored that I just quit and never played it again. The only plus to this game is Dante's design.

In sharp contrast to Devil May Cry, the sequel dumbs down the difficulty an extreme amount. It caters to everyone who whined that the first was too hard, the game play it watered down, it ruins Dante's lovable cocky, confident, and competent personality, and the characters and storyline are absolutely unengaging.

Not a very good game. Dante's disk is atleast DECENT. Dante moves very slugish, and is a very boring character. So, Play the first, DMC3, because this game isn't even worth a look. However, if you want to play it THAT bad, rent it, or borrow it, however, I even have to say that's not even worth it.

So disappointing that I want to cry! They take the franchise of the original stylish-action genre and then give it to a crap developer so that the action is weak and easy, the enviroments are bland, the characters from an after-school special, and the pacing poor. If you've played the first, don't play this one. This is just the originals sick little brother.

I don't like this game beause the first was so good and this game doesn't live up to the original, but instead it took all the horror and creepiness of the first game, chewed it up, spat it out, and said "here's the sequel, enjoy." This game took the horror aspects of the first game and ran with them, but unfortunately made Dante so slow that a snail could actually pose a threat in this game. In the first game, Dante was fast and moved with grace. In this game he moves like a guy who thought it would be cool to run around with a sword today. The open enironments in this game are the only thing this game has to offer that is relatively good, but even then, the game suffers from low resolution and character models that make the first game cry itself to sleep. The plot is pretty dull and boring and is so forgetable it makes my yawns yawn. Playing as Lucia on the second disc is a cool addition and she feels a hell of a lot different from Dante, but her levels are just as boring as Dante's. In fact "boring" is the best word to describe this game. It's so dull and lifeless that it can bairly be considered a game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If anyone needed to know how to take a great game or series and ruin it, Capcom would be the people to ask.

When this game came out, it was very disappointing. So much had changed from the original game and not for the best.

The environments were now drab generic city streets. You fight the most generic enemies ever including demonic tanks and evil cooperation CEOs. I dont like to spoil endings in reviews but i feel like it is a must here, so be warned for below is a ***HUGE SPOILER***

At the end of the game you fight a super generic boss and think to yourself, its finally over. But nope, they needed a way to tie in the first game somehow, so the final boss is a blob consisting of all the bosses from the original game at once. The most unimaginative ending to the most bland and boring sequel ever.

Combat is dumbed down, removing all the style from the last game. Weapons are now hidden throughout the level instead of being requirements of moving forward with a puzzle, so i found myself missing a lot of them throughout the play though because it is never explained they had changed it. About the 5th or 6th level in I found a sword floating on top of a building and finally realized why i hadn't gotten any new weapons. Now that i had found a new weapon does that change up how combat is? No or not at least what you would expect out of getting a different weapon. It isn't rewarding at all.

The story was never amazing in the first place, but it made sense and at least kept me intrested. This story though is the most generic and boring ever. Lucia is a demon and doesn't know it, cooperations are evil, ect.

There is no redeeming factors here. At least in the timeline this takes place at the end of the 4 games, so pretend it never happened and you'll enjoy the other 4 games a lot more.
