At the same time, however, the pacing leads to a game that throws a barrage of stuff at you every 2 minutes without any rhyme or reason, making it somehow overstimulating at the same time. Even the story is confusing. Most of it is only told to you in the second campaign, yet it's all still relevant during the first, meaning you spend the first campaign confused about what's even going on. Don't get me wrong, it's not as if this game is unplayable, but i still consider it a failure on every single aspect possible. Expand

Every level is unnecessarily large and difficult to navigate, the levels are drab and lack any distinctive features, every level is dark and ugly to look at and every level is insanely boring to play through. Enemy encounters all play out exactly the same and range from so easy I entirely forgot them to so frustrating I wish I could forget them. Devil Trigger is barely useful and often tedious to use, and the amulets which you can equip to change how Devil Trigger works are far and few and are uninteresting. Bosses have absurd amounts of health and are insanely boring to fight. Controls are clunky and unpolished. The sound mixing is some of the worst I've ever heard in a video-game, everything is so obnoxiously loud that every sound effect is constantly clashing with one another and the awful soundtrack only adds to the chaotic noise that your TV speakers are forced to vomit out. All weapons feel exactly the same and offer no distinctive game-play changes. The soundtrack is so forgettable and ineffective at conveying any form of significant emotion that I legitimately could not even slightly recall a single song from the game if I tried. Your character, every enemy, every action-sequence, every cut-scene is slow – this game is so slow, and it never stops being annoying. Guns are incredibly over-powered and basically ruin every single enemy encounter in the game. Saying the story is unfinished would be an understatement, because I don't think a story exists at all - every character is so soulless, awkward and poorly written that it feels like some creepy Twilight Zone **** , events and things just happen for no real reason and every cut-scene is so far and few and disjointed from each other it's hard to keep track of anything that happens at all. The story is completely unrelated to any of the other games as well, it's so unimportant and meaningless that they keep lazily slotting it in different points in the DMC timeline whenever necessary over and over again, I don't know why they even bother acknowledging this games existence. The atmosphere that permeates throughout the whole game is really uncomfortable, eerie and off-putting, and it makes for a really unpleasant experience throughout - the game lacks any personality or charm. If video-games had a body and soul, DMC2 would be a decaying corpse. The closest thing to a positive I can give this game is that the final boss is kind of cool, but that doesn't even matter all that much because you can easily defeat by spamming the same weapon you've been spamming the entire game anyways.

It’s a miracle this game didn’t completely undermine the series for good.

One that I would find difficult for even the most hardcore fans to defend or even say that it's their favorite. Everything that made the original fun and memorable has been completely stripped away. It's obvious that whoever was originally put in charge of development had absolutely no clue what made the original great, and despite Hideaki Itsuno coming in at the tail end of development in an attempt to make it salvageable, it ultimately didn't save the game and it damn near killed the series.

The story functions about the same as it did in the original. Dante, along with newcomer Lucia, are tasked with defeating the super bad evil guy and save the world. However, there is one big change added that sets it apart from the original: it's not fun. For as schmaltzy as DMC1 got, there's a level of loveable camp to it that made it so enjoyable. Dante was a bit of a smart ass, cracking jokes at the bosses and just looking like he was having fun with it all. Dante in this game is as flaccid as soggy cardboard. He says so little, and what little he does say is not the least bit memorable. Lucia isn't much better, and the villain Arius? Such a cliché, inconsequential, forgettable villain.

What's worse than a more boring story? Boring gameplay. Structurally, it's identical to the first game. You go level-to-level, fight enemies and beat the boss. However, gone is the challenge and complexity of DMC1, and what we are left with is an absurdly easy, watered down imitator. The enemies are basic to the point of being brain dead, and boss fights are downright pathetic. These enemies are so boring, that you'd be tempted to just run through entire levels without ever fighting them (unless you are required to). You no longer get higher ranks by performing more stylishly in combat, but rather just keep wailing on the enemies/dodging long enough to raise it, leaving so little incentive to want to very up your moveset (what little there is) beyond just trying to stay awake. Oh, sure, you do have a bit more by the way of acrobatics like wall running and shooting your pistols straight down while in the air, but not once do these new abilities ever get utilized in any meaningful way. Speaking of pistols, those alone are gonna help you win the game. They are incredibly overpowered. I'd say almost every enemy and boss you encounter can be beaten with just your pistols alone. If you wanna get through the game much quicker, upgrade those as early as possible. What about the levels themselves? Bland and overly spacious. The sick gothic architecture and atmosphere of the original is replaced with mostly dirty browns. Many of the levels are also way too dark to properly see in (even worse if you are playing an original PS2 copy on a modern TV), and far too big with little to show for it.

Is there anything the game does get right? Well, I mean it's at least functional. Nothing is absolutely broken or game-breaking. The game was also the first to introduce the concept of Bloody Palace, which would be refined and more fun in later entries. The music, while not as memorable as the original, still has some really solid tracks and is certainly the best part of the whole game. Otherwise, Devil May Cry 2 is just an absolute bore. You are far better off skipping this one.

The one good thing about this game is that it gave Capcom a clear idea of which direction not to go in. Being a hasty sequel trying to catch up to the success of the first game and having a ruckus in the development cycle, Devil May Cry 2 fails to deliver in pretty much every respect.

The visual style is clearly inspired by the original but lacks cohesion and often times looks incredibly bland, cheap, and lifeless, often giving a player a hard time telling the enemies from the environment. This makes terrible mission design, full of needless backtracking, so much more painful. That being said, I think, the idea of exploring the downtown of a major city infested with demons as well as an old ethnic town over a cliff was in a way creative, even if not realized successfully.

Dante's looks, as well as his demeanor, are changed to some unclear "more serious" vibe, which robs him of any personality. The design of the second protagonist, Lucia, and her writing is really lackluster too, making her one of the most uninteresting focal characters I've seen in a videogame. This contributes heavily to making the plot feel as unessential to the experience, as this installment is to the series.

By far the worst offender, of course, is simplified in all the wrong ways, disjointed combat, including the all but non-existent enemy AI. It makes the hack and slash gameplay extremely mindless and forgettable, which is probably for the better. The swordplay itself is hard to call completely broken, so you might have occasional fun, but I wouldn't bet on that.

It's redeeming how short this experience is because it's one of the worst ones I've ever had in gaming. The few places in which someone tried to work hard at this game are lost in the sea of uninspired garbage, and it can safely be recommended to skip this game in one's Devil May Cry journey, as Capcom had the mercy to make its story completely inconsequential.

Being a hardcore DMC fan, this game....has no reason to exist. It adds nothing to the storyline of DMC, the combat is boring, the level design is pretty dull and unimaginative, and the bosses are a joke, one hour playing it and I got so bored that I just quit and never played it again. The only plus to this game is Dante's design.

In sharp contrast to Devil May Cry, the sequel dumbs down the difficulty an extreme amount. It caters to everyone who whined that the first was too hard, the game play it watered down, it ruins Dante's lovable cocky, confident, and competent personality, and the characters and storyline are absolutely unengaging.

Not a very good game. Dante's disk is atleast DECENT. Dante moves very slugish, and is a very boring character. So, Play the first, DMC3, because this game isn't even worth a look. However, if you want to play it THAT bad, rent it, or borrow it, however, I even have to say that's not even worth it.

So disappointing that I want to cry! They take the franchise of the original stylish-action genre and then give it to a crap developer so that the action is weak and easy, the enviroments are bland, the characters from an after-school special, and the pacing poor. If you've played the first, don't play this one. This is just the originals sick little brother.

I don't like this game beause the first was so good and this game doesn't live up to the original, but instead it took all the horror and creepiness of the first game, chewed it up, spat it out, and said "here's the sequel, enjoy." This game took the horror aspects of the first game and ran with them, but unfortunately made Dante so slow that a snail could actually pose a threat in this game. In the first game, Dante was fast and moved with grace. In this game he moves like a guy who thought it would be cool to run around with a sword today. The open enironments in this game are the only thing this game has to offer that is relatively good, but even then, the game suffers from low resolution and character models that make the first game cry itself to sleep. The plot is pretty dull and boring and is so forgetable it makes my yawns yawn. Playing as Lucia on the second disc is a cool addition and she feels a hell of a lot different from Dante, but her levels are just as boring as Dante's. In fact "boring" is the best word to describe this game. It's so dull and lifeless that it can bairly be considered a game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If anyone needed to know how to take a great game or series and ruin it, Capcom would be the people to ask.

When this game came out, it was very disappointing. So much had changed from the original game and not for the best.

The environments were now drab generic city streets. You fight the most generic enemies ever including demonic tanks and evil cooperation CEOs. I dont like to spoil endings in reviews but i feel like it is a must here, so be warned for below is a ***HUGE SPOILER***

At the end of the game you fight a super generic boss and think to yourself, its finally over. But nope, they needed a way to tie in the first game somehow, so the final boss is a blob consisting of all the bosses from the original game at once. The most unimaginative ending to the most bland and boring sequel ever.

Combat is dumbed down, removing all the style from the last game. Weapons are now hidden throughout the level instead of being requirements of moving forward with a puzzle, so i found myself missing a lot of them throughout the play though because it is never explained they had changed it. About the 5th or 6th level in I found a sword floating on top of a building and finally realized why i hadn't gotten any new weapons. Now that i had found a new weapon does that change up how combat is? No or not at least what you would expect out of getting a different weapon. It isn't rewarding at all.

The story was never amazing in the first place, but it made sense and at least kept me intrested. This story though is the most generic and boring ever. Lucia is a demon and doesn't know it, cooperations are evil, ect.

There is no redeeming factors here. At least in the timeline this takes place at the end of the 4 games, so pretend it never happened and you'll enjoy the other 4 games a lot more.

While the first game had a challenging mission rank system too, the difference was the less variables used to calculate the score, where 2 adds far too much and dilutes its to a grey lifeless husk.

Dante's character is ruined (even though it's not a Shakespearean hallmark or anything), with him being far more serious and lacking virtually any humor or quips that he had in the first game.
Lucia's character was potential to see unfold, but her emotions and development is pretty disappointing. Add to that the villain being so generic and poor for the game I was very frustrated with it in the end.

The bosses and enemies lack imagination , even outright terrible. They are just reskins of tougher ones or use mechanics that do not feel like they belong in the game at all. The underwater levels are mediocre at best and atrocious at worst. The imbalance of weapon damage is poor, allowing guns to be the main source of damage (even as the ONLY means to damage some bosses) and leave weapons in the cold. On top of that, the weapons Dante or Lucia mainly use are the same sword or twinblades, but have different damage factors and just look visually different. It compromises and sins on the foundations of what the first game set itself out for. The reason it's subpar is that there is still something here I can commend somewhat as interesting. I do find the enemies and bosses visually cool, the music and atmosphere can be very ominous despite not having anything memorable for me to this day.

Devil May Cry 2 is often the hush hush Voldemort of the series, not really worth mentioning because it undermined much of what made DMC a great game and effectively left it skeletal and grey. Top that with an ending and clearly making this canon to the series now, it's hard to see if the series would even make a comeback. It eventually would but to not hear a fan of the series talk down on this game at the time would be unheard of. A subpar game through and through.

Devil May Cry takes it's predecessor's flaws, and adds a whole heap of new flaws that it's predecessor didn't have. The camera is still bad. Backtracking is made even worse, due to repeat location missions as well as two characters to play as. They toned down Dante's humorous and over-confident nature, which not only makes him far less interesting, but also conflicts with the story. The first one's story wasn't the best in gaming, but it never took itself seriously, and this was clearly evident through Dante himself. Here, Dante rarely speaks, and obviously is supposed to seem serious, but the story is a chaotic mess that lacks any cohesive development, even though it tries to take itself seriously. Some bosses are decent, but others can be defeated by shooting at them from a blind spot the whole time. However, Dante still has an interesting moveset, and Lucia allows for a slightly different approach to the game, especially on higher difficulties. Overall though, it fails to capitalize on the first's potential. Expand

Not the worst game ever made, but easily the worst Devil May Cry game. It sacrifices all the style, flair and finesse from the 1st game to implement a few new features that aren't even that useful. It sacrifices all the style, flair and finesse from the 1st game to implement a few new features that aren't even that useful. Almost every enemy, including bosses, requires the same strategy: sword combo, dodge, sword combo, dodge, etc. Not like the 1st game which actually made you THINK about how to approach each enemy. The combos also feel completely stale compared to the original game, where you basically just spam the triangle button repeatedly then hit circle to dodge ad nauseam. No variation whatsoever, whereas DMC1 had you press different directions for different moves or hold down triangle to charge your attacks. Even the sound effects of the sword slashes aren't nearly as cool as they were in the 1st game. Then there's the stinger attack, which was insanely badass in the original, but now looks like Dante is literally just hopping forward and gently poking his enemies.

It feels like everything in DMC2 is simply a mockery of DMC1, as if the developers of this game were so butthurt by the punishing difficulty of the 1st game that they decided to make an entirely dumbed down and far less cool version of it for the sequel. Dante hardly ever speaks now and when he does he sounds dull and very monotone. No more witty one-liners, just a hollow shell of one of gaming's most iconic characters. The environments are way too huge at times, needlessly sprawling on and dragging out the game longer than it should be. Most bosses are way too easy, and no real strategy is involved. Just shoot, dodge and slash your way to victory. Most of them don't even need much of an effort aside from simply blasting your handguns at them, and for some of them that's all you can even do at all. The entire game's difficulty is just ridiculously dumbed down compared to ANY other DMC game, including the reboot.

Lucia is basically just Dante with throwing knives and doesn't add much variety to the already bland gameplay. It's cool to play as Trish but putting in her in this game was a vain attempt to appeal to fans of the original. Overall this was a shallow and mediocre sequel that doesn't deliver the excitement and challenge of the 1st game. It amazes me that anyone even defends this game. It's not totally broken and unplayable, but it's a pale imitation of its astounding predecessor.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a huge let down. Despite some aspects of it not aging well, I really liked the first Devil May Cry. Devil May Cry 2 on the other hand takes everything good about the first game and just throws it out the window. The combat is dumbed down. You can't buy any new moves for any of the weapons. All 3 weapons have the exact same moveset, the only difference between them is the damage they deal and their attack range. The guns are absolutely broken. They deal massive damage and none of the enemies have an answer to them. The enemy A.I is braindead. Sometimes the enemies will not even bother trying to attack you and will just stand out in the open like morons allowing you to just shoot them to death. The bossfights are terrible. The mission 5 boss in particular is one of the laziest and most poorly designed bosses I have ever fought in a video game. The enemy and boss designs are very generic and uninspired. Then there's the difficulty. The game is hilariously easy on normal mode. I died maybe 3 or 4 times throughout the full game with 2 of those deaths being to the final boss. The environments and levels are so bland and boring. The atmosphere just isn't there either. This series has never been known for it's story so it doesn't surprise me that it's your typical *Evil corporate guy tries to take over the world* story. Dante is no longer the light hearted, carefree and cocky badass from the first game. Instead he's turned into a silent and boring shadow of his former self. I didn't care about Lucia at all. She's barely in the game. You can play as her in her own campaign but I really wasn't arsed playing through this boring slog of a game again. I also didn't bother replaying this game on the higher difficulties since this games combat never evolves in the slightest. Unlike every other Devil May Cry game, one playthrough is enough to experience everything it has to offer. The reason I'm giving this game a 4 and not anything lower is because despite everything I just mentioned, it's still a functioning game. Just a very boring one at that. I don't understand how anyone can defend this game after playing any of the other Devil May Cry games. Expand

Enemies don't help this situation at all, as they almost never pose a real challenge. Their attack patterns are extremely shallow and their AI is severely deficient, as they spend most of the time standing around doing nothing. Furthermore, projectile attacks are ridiculously overpowered, easily staggering most enemies and easily taking down bosses in a few minutes. Speaking of bosses, mostly are terribly designed, with the best ones being only mediocre. Their movesets are characterized by simplistic monotonous attacks and embarassingly easy ways to trap them in a loop. The story, much like the prequel, leaves much to be desired, with characters being incredibly flat and the drama quick and cheap. Even after all of this, there are a couple of nice ideas here, like the story being split into two campaigns each for one of the two main characters, each with their storyline and a different final boss, as well as faint improvements from the first game. Areas are now bigger, allowing for more interesting Level Design, with slightly more exploration to find hidden treasures, but it is still far from interesting. A nice additions are amulets, equipment which can add passive or active abilities, but their potential falls flat as they provide minimal changes and are rarely employed for environmental puzzles.

Disappointment is the main word to describe Devil May Cry 2, as it falls short of the intricate and decently balanced combat of the original by just allowing the player to shoot everything rather than rack up points with wild combos. The story is just as forgettable as the enemies, with a whole bunch of nothing going on and doesn't build upon the lore of the series. Exploration is somewhat better, but again is just shy of greatness with no need to improve as combat is very narrow minded. Overall, a disappointment on most levels with a blasé performance from the whole team. Expand

PIECE OF **** broken game with a completely broken auto-aiming, pistols and a devil trigger.Clumsy animations, lack of normal combos, casual bosses and broken firearms. Bosses absolutely do not fit into the atmosphere in DMC, tanks grew from pistols, did I go into slasher or World of tanks? From the pluses of the game, beautiful somersault animations and good music. do not recommend to anyone
