Their newest and deadliest agent is Jericho Cross, an outlaw gunslinger pulled into their ranks by an unfortunate close encounter with a vampire lord. To save the West, and his own soul from damnation, Jericho must hunt the vampire that bit him through an American frontier suddenly overrun by his undead minions. At his disposal is the advanced, deadly technology of the Darkwatch, including an arsenal of powerful assault vehicles and enhanced versions of Western weapons, along with supernatural vampire abilities and a trusty undead horse. Players will experience an action-packed "living West" in "Darkwatch: Curse of the West" with massive environments, non-linear missions, dynamic enemy and non-player-character artificial intelligence (A.I.) affected by a player reputation system, and precision gunplay with location-specific damage. In terms of gameplay quality, this may be another middle-of-the-road shooter, but the unique premise sets it aside from everything else out there. [Sept 2005, p.94]

A decent shooter with a vampire-western theme. More Sergio Leone and "Halo," less "Serious Sam" and techno-steam-punk-funk, and it would have been even better. [Oct 2005]

Darkwatch has a few neat ideas but wins us over by doing solid shooting well. Fast-paced with cool guns, what's not to like? [Nov 2005, p.120]

The multiplayer co-op mode is nothing to write home about, and the adversarial split-screen is nothing short of totally pointless.
  6. There's tons of potential here, but it's mired by a lack of variety, pacing that charges through important bits, and a lack of distinct personalities or identifiable characters. It's decent, but what's there wasn't used nearly well enough.
  7. This could have been a great original title, but instead it's a waste of shelf space with just one redeeming feature: it only takes around five hours to beat.

For me, I treasure the ambiance and escapist experience within a game. I look forward to plugging in and dropping out... of reality that is. This game serves my needs exceedingly well. For starters, the story works for me. As Jericho Cross you unknowingly release a master vampire demon and basically all hell breaks loose. The weapon selection is somewhat limited but again, serves my needs adequetly. The fcat that the game takes place in the late 1800's in the undead wild west makes it quite unique in its own right. Then you throw in a pure blast of adreneline everytime a batch of baddies head your way and this game is a joy to behold. When you snipe off the head of a ghoulish sharpshooter and flames, sparks and blood spews upwards like a ghoulish fountrain, its simply awesome! They've also created amazing sound effects such as a pig squeeling as these creepy dead things meet their maker. There's various missions where you work in unison with other members of the "Darkwatch" rangers and the team effort seems well thought out and intuitive. As a member of the squad your quest to fight the demonic supernatural forces that walk the earth tormenting the innocent, is most satisfying and delicious. When you come across half-dead folks, you have the option to kill or save them and this action dictates which additional powers you receive, either good powers or evil powers. Both, by the the way, are very cool! In closing, let me say this game has been a lot of fun and has had my head spinning faster than a demon with an exploding arrow through his skull. I'd give it a ten but that would make it perfect and I'm still searching for THAT game. It's a fairly short game and could easily be beat within the rental span so give it a shot, so to speak, and take those bastards down!!! Its good ol' creepy FUN! Expand
