This is easily one of the best and most satisfying games to play through.
Even the humour is top-notch (not something you'd expect from this kind of game at first glance, I certainly didn't).

This game is amazing from start to finish. The only problem I have is the writing feels a bit too "Japanese" sometimes. I'm happy to give this game a 9. A must play for Yakuza fans, and even for newcomers

I'm not kidding when I say that this is the best game that I've ever played. It had probably been around 15 years since I put over sixty hours into a game, but every facet of this drew me in. I think about 80% of that was on the mini games alone, but yes...get this game. It's well worth it.

I'd heard about the series, but as I hadn't owned a Playstation since PS2, never played it.
Picked it up on my PC as it was bluntly "cheap" - and have been completely won over.

So the game. It's not a Japanese GTA - which is how the games are sometimes pitched.
World is pretty small, but lovingly detailed - but not 'open world'
I think of it as a game-pulp-novella. Strongest point of the game is the story. Think of it like a great TV show with a great story - and amidst the main plot, you get to play about with a load of games and a load of really entertaining side-missions.
Why I enjoyed this game though was the feeling of place it has. I know it's called 'Yakuza' - but you're going to feel like you know them a bit more at the end.
Why I *REALLY* enjoyed the game was the variety of stories - the big bold set-pieces, full-on-melodrama (full on "MENDOZZZA!!!") to the silly stuff that makes you laugh out loud.
Of special mention as well is the great localization - audio is in full japanese, but really great subtitles ("you really **** the bed" - suspect isn't a japanese phrase for example, but you get the sentiment).
Trying to work out how to sell the game, the best I could come up with was the TV show "The Wire".
Each chapter has a proper plot, but so many asides you think are just for diversion, but realize actually are there to also make you care about the characters.

Единственный минус для русскоязычного игрока - это наличие только японской и английской локализаций. Английский тут не такой уж простой, поэтому при слабом владении лучше даже не пытаться. Но перевод на русский вроде как на подходе.

A better game in this genre is really hard to imagine. It has all that could possibly engage a potential gamer: brilliant plot, cool characters, a whole lot of thoroughly designed mini-games, almost every one of which could possibly become a stand-alone simulator game. You can always do some stuff in this game, but at the same time you can as well just run forward through the story, skipping all the side quests and entertainment stuff. I doubt that it would be worth it, though.

It took me like 90 hours to complete the game and every substory. Of course doing all of this was very tedious at times, that's why I won't give it a 10. The feeling of Japan in the 80s was awesome

Everything about the game (graphics, music, gameplay, story, characters) is incredibly cohesive. The beat em’ up aspect is satisfying, the music is fantastic, and the side quests, characters, and story are too well written and fleshed out: it really does an amazing job of building this world and making you feel a part of it. But the one thing that stands above the rest is just how damn silly, funny, and ridiculous Yakuza 0 is; it’s enough to make your head spin and keep you in laughter throughout the entire thing.

One complaint that I had is that a few of the mechanics of the game are not explained or unintuitive, and so you’ll more than likely to have to look it up to get a better answer. My other criticism is the camera can be a royal pain in the butt to deal with and is especially problematic during combat.

Yakuza 0 is, simply put, a spectacular game. Despite its small flaws, I had an absolute blast with it and I highly recommend everyone to experience this crazy, wild ride.

The story is amazing, the game is bonkers to the wall with the machismo and does not give a f**k how ridiculous it can get, I mean, the trailer shows a guy in a motorcycle without a shirt inside a sewer: how did he get there? does not matter, it is just awesome and that what matters, i found myself liking a lot of the characters especially the main ones, which was the most important part.
I find incredible how easily this game went from serious to stupid and not feel like a mess, it is a marvel to behold.
The fighting is the downside of the game, just because everything else is so good, it will take some time, and upgrades, to get used to but eventually you will get it, but it could be better, a lot of fights feel cheap or bust.
The main music, the karaoke music, they stay in my head and I keep listening to them over and over.
The voice work is A-MA-ZING, you can trust on Japanese voice-actors to give 110% all the time, and it shows.

This is how you make a prequel.

Yakuza 0 is without a doubt one of the best games in the series, and it is quite obvious that RGG Studio knew what they needed to do, to make this game the amazing prequel that it is.

Certainly, it is the best entry point for anyone wanting to get into the franchise, and this is the way I did it, years ago, when this game came to the PC.

But the interesting thing about Yakuza Zero here is the fact that…once you’ve played the whole series, going back to Zero…is even more amazing compared to the first time. At least…this is the case for me, because then we can appreciate the huge amount of care and attention to detail put into this game, with so many little details and bits here and there referencing things that we get to learn, to some extent, in the following games.

Replaying this game is quite nice, and since I didn’t have a review posted here for this one (I thought I had) well, I just replayed it recently and this is a good time. This game is top epic quality from start to finish, of that there’s no doubt.

Performance wise, this is a decent port here on the PC, it has some minor caveats here and there, but nothing that a quick visit to PCGamingwiki can’t fix, and other than those small quirks, the game runs pretty nice on the PC.

I originally played this game on my old i5 4690K and GTX 1070 machine, and it ran quite fine at 1080p with some Super Sampling on top too, enough to do 60 FPS at all times.

Currently, on my Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti, I have played at 1620p DLDSR and with SSAAx4 on top, so that’s a lot of resolution, and still able to keep locked 60 FPS at all times.

What amazed me the most the very first time I played, back in the day, were the incredibly detailed character models, especially in the cinematics (there’s a mod on PC to switch the in game models with the slightly higher versions used in cinematics, which I used and works great) and their facial expressions, animations and skin quality / textures and their eyes…are just insanely well done for a game not precisely sporting the latest state of the art tech when it comes to engine and stuff like that.

It’s a testament of RGG Studio’s skill when making these types of games, they know how to do it well.

And the music…well, this franchise has amazing tracks, and Yakuza 0 has some memorable tracks, for sure.

The voice acting is incredible, one of the best I’ve seen and you can feel that the actors had a blast when working on this game.

Gameplay is pretty fun and enjoyable, it never gets old with all the style switching and great amount of different heat actions available, and yeah...feeling the weight of each hit on the controller when it vibrates enhances the experience. Good combat doesn't need to be overly complex, and I think this game strikes a good balance, and I'll never get tired of punching thugs in a game like this, it's just very fun.

All in all…Yakuza 0 is one hell of a start for the series so if you’re one of the lucky people out there who’s yet to experience the series…congratulations, the journey is one to cherish forever, enjoy. This is a great game, from an amazing franchise.

I’ve steered clear of Japanese games since I figured out long ago they’re not my cup of tea. But Yakuza is something else. It was my first contact with the series and although at first I did mind the fact that it trails behind Western competition in many aspects, I quickly ceased to notice it. I know it’s an overused cliché, but damn, Yakuza has a soul! And an exceptional story, one of the best I’ve experienced in games since I started playing them almost thirty years ago. Even if you avoid Japanese games, do yourself a favour and give Yakuza 0 a chance, because it is ridiculously fun and you need to experience it too. [10/2018, p.69]
