Sep 8, 2022Xel tries to tell a compelling story about time travel, loss, anger, and consequences, but the game just isn’t in great shape. I want to see what Tiny Roar can achieve after they patch the daylights out of Xel, or perhaps what they do in their next project. As it stands, though, Xel needs to think about what it’s done and learn from tis mistakes before it’s not grounded anymore.

Sep 1, 2022XEL is a game that understands its genre, but the development team fails to see that solid innovation is required to compete, given how crowded it is. The basic exploration and combat work well and the time stuff is an interesting addition. But much more is needed to get players interested and to keep them playing. But the biggest issue with XEL is the fact that it has bugs and glitches that force players to replay already uninteresting sections of a level. Getting stuck on a bit of geometry and having no solution but to reload kills interest in a title faster than the lack of inspiration. Once the technical issues are fixed and for a player who is a major fan of action and exploration and has finished other titles in the genre, XEL might be worth picking up on sale.

Jul 24, 2022XEL is a passion project from the Tiny Road team, to be sure. It reprises the basic features of Zelda-like games, but it struggles to give character to the game, which feels clunky and often too slow. Then add up the graphical and performance problems, and what remains is a title that we struggle to recommend even to fans of the genre.
