Xanadu Next is a treat - a well crafted package that blends addictive combat, fun progression systems, pleasant exploration, great music & atmosphere along with a compelling story that doesn't get in the way. The whole experience is simply delightfully satisfying. Sometimes, good things come to those who wait.

Xanadu Next is a strong experience from start to finish, and a humble little game that shouldn't be ignored.

One of those games that can be appreciated regardless of how long it’s been around – Xanadu Next makes some brilliant use of videogame elements that we have all come to love, and although the player often lacks meaningful choice the game is never truly restrictive.

Xanadu Next is classic action RPG from one of my favourite developers with a fantastic score that is let down by a buggy release.

Xanadu Next is a literal blast from the past, a 2005 action role-playing that manages to be incredibly engaging still today thanks to several spot-on features, such as the excellent mix between RPG and puzzle games elements, action combat system and the evocative soundtrack.

While Xanadu Next is buggy and its menus just plain busted for controller use, the rest of the game is a wonderful trip through a classic JRPG world.

With the length ranging from 10 to 15 hours, Xanadu Next packs the right amount of content anyone who’s in the mood for a title that mixes action-RPG and puzzle elements. Like with many games that revolve around obtaining a legendary weapon, the Dragon Slayer is a blade that’s worth wielding.

Xanadu Next would have been just a relic from the past if it wasn’t such a blast to play. If you can overlook somewhat dated graphics, the lack of voice-acting and the quiet demeanor of the silent protagonist, there’s a gripping and enjoyable action role-playing game awaiting in Xanadu Next. Easy to grasp nature of the gameplay mechanics and effortless controls tell about respecting the player but the game doesn’t underestimate its adventurers either. It’s easy to get into Xanadu Next but hard to leave its dungeons and secrets until they’re fully revealed.

Xanadu Next is a charming RPG title that seems to have sprung out of the past for new life. It reminds us of the old-school principles of gaming, with labyrinthine levels, a vast array of enemies… and an off-beat lore centred around an epic English poem.

Xanadu Next is a pretty decently made RPG. I had no idea it existed, but after playing it, I think a lot of fans of the dungeon crawler genre will have a decent time with it. There are a few issues here and there which I mainly chalk up to it being an 11 year old game at this point, but for the most part, players looking for a decent action RPG with a little bit of loot thrown in will find a fun time with this Japanese dungeon crawler.

Despite looking a bit dated and not quite as good as Xseed’s recent Ys games, Xanadu Next is still an enjoyable dungeon crawler. It’s not without its faults such as some known bugs and the constant increase in key prices, but once you get around those quirks you’ll find a fun game that’ll keep you coming back to the ruins to explore some more.

Xanadu Next is the kind of throwback action-RPG that we don't see much of anymore. It lets the story trickle out slowly while all of the needed mechanics are presented early, leaving the player without a guide much sooner than contemporary JRPGs. It helps that the gameplay is strong, and the difficulty can be appreciated more now that the public seems to dig games that punish the player. It's not a game for everyone, and some won't like the older presentation, but genre fans will appreciate that this title has an official translation and can play on more modern machines.

The story, especially at first, is a bit sparse, and does not necessarily hook you in right away, but the game’s fun action keep you playing long enough for the more interesting narrative aspects to kick in.

Exploring the island of Xanadu is engaging in many ways. When you’re not finding loot or battling enemies, the cartoony visuals bring the island to life. For the intimate setting the locations are surprisingly varied, and considering this is a 2005 game it holds up pretty well. The aesthetic lends to the game’s sense of humor, whimsy and charm. It’s not every game where you have an adorable young sidekick pack you a lunch before you leave the village.

Xanadu Next is definitely a game that feels dated by many standards with its lack of a detailed map, frustrating menus, and simple combat. Even despite all this, there was an immense draw to the game with its gameplay loop that proved to be incredibly fun, and really made me want to keep going.

This is not a revolutionary title that set the Japanese gaming world on fire and crossed the Pacific with spectacular expectations. Xanadu Next is instead a game that had to wait eleven years after its original release to cross the Pacific (unless the N-Gage release played by approximately seven people counts), but at least it's a solid title. Falcom tends to deliver worthy action RPGs, and this one is definitely worth experiencing for anyone interested in hacking and slashing to victory.

The story is terrible, characters are typical JRPG fare and completely forgettable. But none of this matters, because when you start playing, you're going to be hooked. Gameplay, pacing, and the sense of adventure are simple but satisfyingly consistent. Areas are visually different enough so that you feel like you're progressing through an organic world. Progression systems are fun with interesting choices to make on skills and abilities. You can redistribute your stats if you want to change them, and even level back down with some perks if necessary. This is one of those rare gems you shouldn't miss if you like games like Diablo, with more adventure and less gear-grind. 12 hours of pure blissful entertainment--this is what we want, as Creamwolf said, feed us more games like this please and ty. When you start up this game you are treated to a style of rpg that does not get done much any more; there is story, exploration and characterWhen you start up this game you are treated to a style of rpg that does not get done much any more; there is story, exploration and character development.

    Here are the issues...

Linear and very obvious; many rpgs pull off linear and integrate an element of choice/story/exploration; this is boring and limited.

Exploration is contrived behind a theme of gates, events and again linear. I say fu, if I want to go to a dangerous ruin on an island to explore, dont set the whole thing on rails. I see no difference between this and nes mario in its reguards for player freedom.

Inventory is relegated to a bunch of necessary items and must have weapons to push through an artificial obbstical.

There are bugs and such that are well documented( the inventory bug on the pc can be solved by using a joystick and the switch to pointer button)

(a personal and relevant stigma for some games)
How does the sound for these games get tested, seriously. playing the back ground music was earsplitting due to the digital flute sound that was so shrill my neighbor pounded a wall; this is one of many complaints of the sound balancing in games.

As a side note; A 10 this does not deserve, and if you give it such high praise you also describe your reasons, I applaud zatta for being descriptive. (12,28,2016)
