I have to say I disagree with many of the other reviewers when they say this is as good or better than TNO. The standout features in TNO were the solid gunplay, the wonderful characters, interesting setting, and engrossing story. Unfortunately, TOB only retains the first of these. The story and setting and characters aren't nearly as interesting as they were in TNO. The levels don't look much different, sure you're in Castle Wolfenstein but it looks the same as the castle in TNO and you never come across anything that really stands out. I also didn't find the weapons to be as interesting this time either. I know it's set prior to TNO so none of the futuristic weapons can make an appearance but the neo-tommy gun was sorely missing as well. None of the levels are memorable. In the first game you had the epic landing scene, the moonbase, the bridge assault, etc. No stand out levels are here sadly.

The hyped addition is this pipe that you can use to access new areas. This pipe functions solely as a melee weapon and you use it to climb designated walls where stairs or ladders could have sufficed and open doors that could have easily been opened with something else. It doesn't make the gameplay or exploration any better. But for some reason they want you to love this pipe so they make you spend 40 minutes alone with it and the beginning of the game and it's a real bore. The game does a nice nod to the old games by bringing back the occult. However i didn't really care for how they did it. They added zombies which are supposed to be a joy to fight. There should be hordes that you can mow down. The zombies in TOB just weren't fun to fight. They just felt like brain dead normal enemies who didn't shoot back.

Although i just listed a ton of negatives about the game, i still really enjoyed my time with it. If you liked TNO, you will probably like this. It's more of the same, with some parts that are better and some parts that are worse. There is more comedic relief this time around and I genuinely found it funny. The new enemies were interesting and fit well with the theme. The end boss was wonderful, if a bit easy to defeat. The levels themselves were well designed if a bit repetitive. It's a fun game, no doubt about it, but to say it's perfect is crazy.

Premise: I haven't played "The New Order".

"The Old Blood" (TOB, from now on) sure is a nice action game. It serves as a prequel to "Wolfenstein: The New Order". Its gameplay mechanics are simple yet dynamic in that they encourage a fast and non-stop style of play. Yes, you could just take cover and play somewhat stealthy but don't fool yourself, you won't get through the end like that. Enemies' variation ain't that extensive, far from it.

MachineGames opted - Bethesda published the game (...) - to use the id Tech 5 engine, first used in RAGE. It has been tweaked and enhanced and, gotta say, its rendition is somewhat impressive. There are many graphics options to play with and the game scales quite well. But not enough. I think that - ruling out my rig, Win10+drivers - more optimization's work would have been welcomed. I can play with mid-to-high details @ 60fps even though there are a very seldom occasions - when main characters come very close; some final encounter's moment; a couple of shadows + god's rays + other combos - where frame rates goes down to early 30s. Yes, a bit more work on the engine would have been appreciated.

The story and some locations take a bit from the two (chronological) predecessors. The game is straight as hell with only some variations to access secret area. No openness story/gameplay-wise.
For my tastes it's a bit too arcade. Enemies, enemies everywhere and.. from no-where. Yep, they spawn out of no-where. A bit too "old school" and out of context in that that will contribuite in ruining some points.. and then, supposedly main characters that dies like normal **** I mean, it's ok to let a somewhat main char die in non cinematic way.. but to have it and feel like you CAN'T do anything, as if it's something scripted, well, that ain't fun.
The final encounter. Mh. Random boss fight just to boss fight. Honestly, lore-wise they could have develop further without "that thing" happening. Really. And it ain't funny at all with random enemies teleporting from somewhere far beyond and having to shoot at one specific spot all the way till you end its misery. MachineGames, you're not there. Nope.

By the end we have a nice action game - too arcade for me - with nice graphics and arts. A story and lore that would have been nice to deepen and expand.. and not be ruined by some weird, awkward moments and bad gameplay decisions.

This DLC is somewhat smaller than Wolfenstein: The New Order and not as good, but still very enjoyable.

Unfortunately there are still a few final bosses (last millenium style) but I suppose id still feels forced to include these annoying game stages since it's a FPS. The last one makes little sense and isn't particularly subtle; one of my regrets is the lack of traps against the ennemies, most of the time you only have brutal force as strategy, even if some stealth is possible now and then.

Other than that, there are a few winks at the original Wolfenstein (and other games) that are quite fun to discover, and overall the level design is great, especially given the limited, outdated engine. id Tech5 has always suffered from serious texture limitations in order to comply with consoles, but it was less noticeable in TOB than TNO.

As the gameplay goes, it's just another recycled work, we have some espionage play, very reminiscent of Farcry 3/4, Deus Ex : Human Revolution, and many others to save their names. This devolves in to either scurrying, or straight up gunfighting, the latter being a bit of fun. The game goes on through a few tough fights, either survival type or boss battles, neither being any fun. All this is impaired by a half-baked input system, leaving the user to struggle to say, pick up health packs, or advance the stage, as a million half-dead bear down behind him.

Even though the same shooter mechanics are in place, I found myself growing weary of constantly having to look for Stormtrooper helmets, armour and bullets. This scavenge-athon every second detracts from the gameplay, and without the strong storyline as in the first game, there's just not enough to recommend playing this over other, better FPS campaigns. Having said all this, the game is not a full-priced product, and I did play for around 7 hours, so don't feel I've wasted my cash. Quite why I had to fight at lunatic chained monster at the bottom of a cave full of Nazi zombies, is beyond me. Expand

    A good game.
Gameplay is mostly fun. Takes roughly 3-4 hours to complete.
Graphics mostly look good. Most of the environments look amazing. Some of the cutscenes are pre-rendered and look so terribly bad and they are even locked at 30 fps... Luckily game runs somewhat decent on my AMD 6950. I can get mostly solid 60 fps on max settings if I don't use AA and turn on compressed textures.

The story isn't anything too interesting. Characters are boring at best. But what I love is that they based The Old Blood on Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I especially loved the part with the cable car. When I saw the catacombs I was hoping that there are going to be zombies. Aaaand we got extremely generic nazi zombie BS. Why did you have to do this? You basically ruined a good game. And what made the ending even worse was the final boss which was some massive turd sticking out of the ground flinging his arms around on a tiny arena... Mein gott!

I would of given 8 if not 9 points if you made some proper zombies and some proper ending.

They seriously need to be shot of the returning to the very first Wolfenstein as well. No I don't much care to keep getting the opportunity to play it (not least because the PC Format cover disk the demo of the very first one came on gave my tank PC the welcomB virus).
Otherwise, it's okay. It's ridiculously short in comparison to it's predecessor of the New Order, and it left me wanting more and lacking any real sense of accomplishment when I'd actually finished the game.
If there were slightly more to this in terms of current Wolfenstein content instead of continuous reversions to the old classic of decades gone before, I think the time would have been better spent on the Old Blood's production.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, while a good singleplayer FPS in its own right, does not measure up to the level of narrative quality set by The New Order. That said, it is a treat for longtime fans of the series, reintroducing the infamous mountain castle from which the series takes its name, hidden levels from the original Wolfenstein 3D, and occult elements that defined Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the 2009 game. It is also significantly more difficult overall given a dearth of health and armor upgrades, but to some degree this enhances the sense of desperation that sets in over the course of the campaign. There are several new and useful new weapons, most notably the "Kampfpistole", a single-shot rocket launcher with significant potential against both groups of weaker enemies and the armored Supersoldaten. Both this game and New Order had an odd audio problem wherein in-game sounds were only played through the left ear, while cutscene audio worked in both. In addition, this game suffers from frequent, jarring freezes, though not once did these freezes actually crash the game. If you enjoy Wolfenstein in particular I can recommend this game, but if you are looking for something more, I would direct you instead to The New Order. Expand

But after a while, some parts became more enjoyable, especially the episode in the city, at the tavern, when you meet Helga and things derails.

For me, it's a "middle of the road" expansion, with some novelties in weaponry (a sniper rifle at last !) and enemies, but is way to much safe / relying on nostalgia to really want me to replay it again.

The only thing slightly lowering the score as it's just quite short, at roughly 4-5 hours SP campaign.

That said this game its not doing anything all that new either. There is not a lot of originality on offer here. I also felt yet again the violence and tone was somewhat gratuitous at times detracting from the overall enjoyment of the game. Once again too bugs were present that saw this game fail to work on one of my laptops that exceeded the stated specifications.

That said this is still an improvement and we can but hope it continues with the upcoming title.

This is a much shorter game, taking me a little less than 5 hours to complete with a less varied feeling campaign than the new order…
For the most part everything is the same, you have the same weapons, health and armour system from the new order.. though this time you have a crowbar pipe mix that you use to progress through the games world.
And annoyingly these progression moments with the bar make you drop your massive gatline gun you just picked up
The campaign feels like a very typical throwaway first person shooter compared to the new order..
the story feels much less personal, and because of that I really wasn’t invested in the outcome of this story or the games world..
It’s a lot of enemies around every corner like youd expect from a run and gun call of duty campaign..
Rather than the decently paced new order..
theres no breaks, no lockpicking, no climbing through different areas.. its just go forward and interact with things until the game is over, youre thrown right into the action non stop
Though I found myself being more stealthy this time…
As you are doing a lot of infiltration and there are giant armoured robot enemies patrolling areas, really cementing the idea of stealth in your mind.. and like the new order there are scouts walking around that will call for back up if theyre alarmed..
And with the constant dozens of enemies, its worthwhile taking these scouts out as your health and armour will constantly feel drained…
And I had a lot of fun sneaking around and taking them out with a silenced pistol.
the world of the old blood is actually really cool and a bit spooky..
The world design is easily my favorite part of this game as youll go from castle Wolfenstein, to a little villiage, to a graveyard, really mixing up the scenery to keep the game from feeling repetitive despite how repetitive it actually ends up being
and towards the end the game turns into a zombie shooter as youre getting to the bottom of an unleashed dark ancient power that the Nazis are trying to use for themselves…
The old blood has a cool campaign to run through…
But its nothing youll remember long after youre done…
Its essentially The New Order with none of the pacing or great storytelling..
Just mindless shooting for 5 hours…
    Take that how you will.
I give Wolfenstein The Old Blood
    a 7/10

It's logical when the game time is around 6 hours. It's hard for me to evaluate. I can't blame the game, because compared to the previous one, it is not even sold at full price, so it is not even a full-fledged sequel, on the one hand, despite the fact that you spend little money on the game, you get little music. I would conclude by saying that it is a good game. But I would probably recommend it only to Wolfenstein fans. Expand

A great game, I 100% recommend it. The secrets are satisfying to find and the gameplay is fun. The story was a bit simple, and near the end, it went off the rails, in a bad way.

Бегаешь с обломком трубы и убиваешь суперсолдат, отключая их от генераторов. Для любителей стелса зайдет, для любителей просто пострелять - вряд ли.

Old Blood is a good expansion to a great game. I wanted more Wolfenstein, and that’s exactly what I got here. Sure, it’s neither as inventive nor as heartfelt as New Order, but it’s a solid piece of content that’s still leagues better than most shooters. If you liked New Order, I’d recommend checking it out.

A juicy addition to a great game. It doesn't try to rebuild its foundations; on the contrary it uses them to deliver new portion of fun. That's how it should look, ladies and gentlemen. [Issue#253]

MachineGames took a step back in terms of design. The Old Blood is basically the same game as before but more action oriented, not as varied in terms of pace and lacking distinct ideas and settings. [07/2015, p.48]
