WOLFENSTEIN: THE OLD BLOOD, after Wolfenstein: The New Order. Flashbacks from early Wolfenstein 2009, simply can not please. The zombie theme was conveyed perfectly, not in vain spending time on this add-on

Great prequel for TNO with new enemies and the same gameplay quality. The story is not as rich as in TNO, but this game is much shorter- which is my only complaint. But for the low cost, it's worth it.

I have to say I disagree with many of the other reviewers when they say this is as good or better than TNO. The standout features in TNO were the solid gunplay, the wonderful characters, interesting setting, and engrossing story. Unfortunately, TOB only retains the first of these. The story and setting and characters aren't nearly as interesting as they were in TNO. The levels don't look much different, sure you're in Castle Wolfenstein but it looks the same as the castle in TNO and you never come across anything that really stands out. I also didn't find the weapons to be as interesting this time either. I know it's set prior to TNO so none of the futuristic weapons can make an appearance but the neo-tommy gun was sorely missing as well. None of the levels are memorable. In the first game you had the epic landing scene, the moonbase, the bridge assault, etc. No stand out levels are here sadly.

The hyped addition is this pipe that you can use to access new areas. This pipe functions solely as a melee weapon and you use it to climb designated walls where stairs or ladders could have sufficed and open doors that could have easily been opened with something else. It doesn't make the gameplay or exploration any better. But for some reason they want you to love this pipe so they make you spend 40 minutes alone with it and the beginning of the game and it's a real bore. The game does a nice nod to the old games by bringing back the occult. However i didn't really care for how they did it. They added zombies which are supposed to be a joy to fight. There should be hordes that you can mow down. The zombies in TOB just weren't fun to fight. They just felt like brain dead normal enemies who didn't shoot back.

Although i just listed a ton of negatives about the game, i still really enjoyed my time with it. If you liked TNO, you will probably like this. It's more of the same, with some parts that are better and some parts that are worse. There is more comedic relief this time around and I genuinely found it funny. The new enemies were interesting and fit well with the theme. The end boss was wonderful, if a bit easy to defeat. The levels themselves were well designed if a bit repetitive. It's a fun game, no doubt about it, but to say it's perfect is crazy.

    Rig: 12gb ram 1600; 2500k@4.6; 850 Pro 512gb; GTX 960 4gb Strix OC@1080p; Win10 with latest Nvidia drivers.

Premise: I haven't played "The New Order".

"The Old Blood" (TOB, from now on) sure is a nice action game. It serves as a prequel to "Wolfenstein: The New Order". Its gameplay mechanics are simple yet dynamic in that they encourage a fast and non-stop style of play. Yes, you could just take cover and play somewhat stealthy but don't fool yourself, you won't get through the end like that. Enemies' variation ain't that extensive, far from it.

MachineGames opted - Bethesda published the game (...) - to use the id Tech 5 engine, first used in RAGE. It has been tweaked and enhanced and, gotta say, its rendition is somewhat impressive. There are many graphics options to play with and the game scales quite well. But not enough. I think that - ruling out my rig, Win10+drivers - more optimization's work would have been welcomed. I can play with mid-to-high details @ 60fps even though there are a very seldom occasions - when main characters come very close; some final encounter's moment; a couple of shadows + god's rays + other combos - where frame rates goes down to early 30s. Yes, a bit more work on the engine would have been appreciated.

The story and some locations take a bit from the two (chronological) predecessors. The game is straight as hell with only some variations to access secret area. No openness story/gameplay-wise.
For my tastes it's a bit too arcade. Enemies, enemies everywhere and.. from no-where. Yep, they spawn out of no-where. A bit too "old school" and out of context in that that will contribuite in ruining some points.. and then, supposedly main characters that dies like normal **** I mean, it's ok to let a somewhat main char die in non cinematic way.. but to have it and feel like you CAN'T do anything, as if it's something scripted, well, that ain't fun.
The final encounter. Mh. Random boss fight just to boss fight. Honestly, lore-wise they could have develop further without "that thing" happening. Really. And it ain't funny at all with random enemies teleporting from somewhere far beyond and having to shoot at one specific spot all the way till you end its misery. MachineGames, you're not there. Nope.

By the end we have a nice action game - too arcade for me - with nice graphics and arts. A story and lore that would have been nice to deepen and expand.. and not be ruined by some weird, awkward moments and bad gameplay decisions.

It crashed on a loading screen silently making me wait 8 minutes watching a little spinny thing in a corner run. I was forced to alt ctrl del out of the game. You know what happened when I started it up again? the main menu stopped working entirely and none of the save slots would load and there was no exit button.

I had to Alt Ctrl Del AGAIN, this time it crashed so hard that it actually took steam down with it and crashed steam AS WELL. 100% completely repeatable too, boot up game, main menu doesn't work, Alt Ctrl Del, steam crash. I tried this five times in a row.

All I was looking for was Wolfenstien: more, I didn't expect innovation, a new setting or anything I just wanted more. Technically I suppose I got more, I got an intro level and one Nazi shootout before the game crashed so hard it broke steam. I can say literally nothing positive for this, go buy the new order instead.

The Old Blood is a standalone prequel to its predesecssor, The New Order, taking place during World War 2, directly before the beginning of The New Order's storyline. As it was with the new order, however, the story isn't the main focus of the game. The bulk of the game is concerned with its gameplay, which is functionally no different to The New Order, in that main character B.J. Blazkowicz can hold many different weapons, from the powerful Schockhammer semi-automatic shotgun to the grenade-launching Kampfpistole.

However, in line with the earlier setting, some features have been removed, such as the upgrade feature, which now only affects one weapon, and the rechargable energy weapons - however, these have been replaced with a new mechanic, the Pipe. Found very early on, the Pipe has many uses, including as a weapon, both dual wielded and as one weapon, and climbing walls, somewhat reminiscent of the Cliffhanger mission from Modern Warfare 2. In addition, again much like The New Order, most of the levels can be tacked either with stealth or with high action with little ramification as to choice, making the gamemuch more flexible, and overall the gameplay is fun and unique when compared to other shooters.

There are a few criticisms to be made, however. First of all, the levels are notably more linear in comparison with The New Order's. Secondly, objectives are often not very clear and objective markers don't always appear straight away, so sometimes one must look around a bit in order ot find out what it is you're meant to be doing. Finally, and this is the biggest criticism of them all, the game's final boss (without spoiling anything) is incredibly tedious and overly difficult in comparison with the rest of the game. Despite this, however, The Old Blood still manages to hold its own through its gameplay.

I managed to complete ther game's storyline in around 5 to 6 hours, which for a game that costs about half as much as a full game is quite a lot. Ground Zeroes cost about as much and was considerably shorter than this.

In conclusion, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a worthy prequel/expansion to The New Order, in spite of its large shortcomings. I'd personally reccommend playing this before The New Order, seeing how they flow into each other and play almost identically.

This DLC is somewhat smaller than Wolfenstein: The New Order and not as good, but still very enjoyable.

Unfortunately there are still a few final bosses (last millenium style) but I suppose id still feels forced to include these annoying game stages since it's a FPS. The last one makes little sense and isn't particularly subtle; one of my regrets is the lack of traps against the ennemies, most of the time you only have brutal force as strategy, even if some stealth is possible now and then.

Other than that, there are a few winks at the original Wolfenstein (and other games) that are quite fun to discover, and overall the level design is great, especially given the limited, outdated engine. id Tech5 has always suffered from serious texture limitations in order to comply with consoles, but it was less noticeable in TOB than TNO.

As the gameplay goes, it's just another recycled work, we have some espionage play, very reminiscent of Farcry 3/4, Deus Ex : Human Revolution, and many others to save their names. This devolves in to either scurrying, or straight up gunfighting, the latter being a bit of fun. The game goes on through a few tough fights, either survival type or boss battles, neither being any fun. All this is impaired by a half-baked input system, leaving the user to struggle to say, pick up health packs, or advance the stage, as a million half-dead bear down behind him.

TNO does not only create an incredibly dark and threatening utopia, it also tells a compelling story about characters you can and will care about. Unfortunately this standalone add on "The Old Blood" (TOB) does neither: the story is a return to the paths Wolfenstein took often before, i.e. Nazis chasing after a paranormal approach to world domination. The companions you meet along the way are pale and, frankly, negligible. What TOB does well though is bring back the mechanics from TNO, including a number of tricky and quite tough to beat enemies as well as minor puzzles required to advance in the levels. TOB looks, sounds and feels like TNO which is a good thing if you enjoyed TNO's gunplay, AI behavior and art style.

If you're looking for an FPS with the story and immersion levels of TNO, TOB might not be able to fully deliver. If, however, you're looking for an old-school shooter that sets itself apart from the usual QTEs and scripted Hollywood-type shooters, TOB will not disappoint.

Graphics mostly look good. Most of the environments look amazing. Some of the cutscenes are pre-rendered and look so terribly bad and they are even locked at 30 fps... Luckily game runs somewhat decent on my AMD 6950. I can get mostly solid 60 fps on max settings if I don't use AA and turn on compressed textures.
The story isn't anything too interesting. Characters are boring at best. But what I love is that they based The Old Blood on Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I especially loved the part with the cable car. When I saw the catacombs I was hoping that there are going to be zombies. Aaaand we got extremely generic nazi zombie BS. Why did you have to do this? You basically ruined a good game. And what made the ending even worse was the final boss which was some massive turd sticking out of the ground flinging his arms around on a tiny arena... Mein gott!

I would of given 8 if not 9 points if you made some proper zombies and some proper ending.

Nothing really all that new here. Irritating start with a horrible stealth intro. Typical on the rails kinda shooter If you're a fan of the series (I'm not) you might like this game but otherwise it's a pass. The big problem is that's it's way too short, it relies on too many cinematics, and the level layouts are uninspired.

Graphically very smooth on a mid-range system, Wolfenstein The Old Blood is a good game and here's the impending "but". They seriously need to be shot of the returning to the very first Wolfenstein as well. No I don't much care to keep getting the opportunity to play it (not least because the PC Format cover disk the demo of the very first one came on gave my tank PC the welcomB virus).
Otherwise, it's okay. It's ridiculously short in comparison to it's predecessor of the New Order, and it left me wanting more and lacking any real sense of accomplishment when I'd actually finished the game.
If there were slightly more to this in terms of current Wolfenstein content instead of continuous reversions to the old classic of decades gone before, I think the time would have been better spent on the Old Blood's production.

An otherwise perfect expansion to one of the most underrated titles of 2014.

A year after "The New Order", we are introduced to a 1946 setting with are well known protagonist Blazkowicz, who helps you blast through each level killing those who stand in your way. The Old Blood is a nostalgic-like trip back to the 80's, branching out with superb graphics and Nazi shredding goodness.

I was oh so excited! I didn't watch any walkthrough or easter egg hunting, and found EVERYTHING. The start was a bit bland and boring but further on, **** got real. Phantom zombies? I did NOT expect that. I loved the ending boss cause it was challenging and you needed to throw everything you could at it. And there. My review. I seriously recommend to play this BEFORE The New Order, if you're not a Full-Time Wolfenstein player. But, you can choose whatever order you want. 10 out of bloody 10. Expand

HORRIBLY BUGGY. This game would not work on my HP Envy l3040nr laptop and persistently crashed spectacularly on my brand new Levono e560. Both exceeded the minimum spec to play this game.

I tried everything suggested to fix the issue and still it failed again and again. I'll NEVER buy a title with this developers name on it ever again. Buyers have a right to expect software that works.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood allows you to spend more time in Wolfenstein. It features an additional content for the original game, but is sold as a standalone game. The concept has not been changed, the developers just added a few new things (a new story, new weapons, new maps, etc). Nothing special. I liked the game itself, it's OK and worth playing.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, while a good singleplayer FPS in its own right, does not measure up to the level of narrative quality set by The New Order. That said, it is a treat for longtime fans of the series, reintroducing the infamous mountain castle from which the series takes its name, hidden levels from the original Wolfenstein 3D, and occult elements that defined Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the 2009 game. It is also significantly more difficult overall given a dearth of health and armor upgrades, but to some degree this enhances the sense of desperation that sets in over the course of the campaign. There are several new and useful new weapons, most notably the "Kampfpistole", a single-shot rocket launcher with significant potential against both groups of weaker enemies and the armored Supersoldaten. Both this game and New Order had an odd audio problem wherein in-game sounds were only played through the left ear, while cutscene audio worked in both. In addition, this game suffers from frequent, jarring freezes, though not once did these freezes actually crash the game. If you enjoy Wolfenstein in particular I can recommend this game, but if you are looking for something more, I would direct you instead to The New Order. Expand

But after a while, some parts became more enjoyable, especially the episode in the city, at the tavern, when you meet Helga and things derails.

For me, it's a "middle of the road" expansion, with some novelties in weaponry (a sniper rifle at last !) and enemies, but is way to much safe / relying on nostalgia to really want me to replay it again.

A really solid entry in to this new Wolfenstein franchise. A prequel to the New Order and a return to originals. The game has everything you'd expect with good action, looks great and a solid story with good voice acting. The only thing slightly lowering the score as it's just quite short, at roughly 4-5 hours SP campaign.

Wolfenstein's dynamic and extremely intensive gameplay pulls in from the very first seconds of the game and doesn't give up for a long time. It is enjoyable, because of some reasons. First of all, graphics is amazing. I believe it is perfect example of the "next generation" visual experience. Secondly, background music and sounds effects are at a high level, so the feeling of shooting is incredibly pleasant. Moreover, every nationality speaks its own language, which means, the main character, American W. J. Blazkowicz speaks English and German Nazis speaks German. Thirdly, the alternative course of history is elaborated. It is based not only on presented story, but also on a mass of additional letters, notes and maps. Another things are well developed difficulty levels. Very easy level is trivial and uber mode (very hard level) is overwhelmingly difficult. unfortunately, some bosses are not at a challenging level, but are at the "dark souls" level. MachineGames included into the game zombies, which in recent times has become trite and boring. It seems to me that the problem of this product is its plot. In my opinion, the plot is trivial and casual. Lasts but not least are secret rooms, collectibles, achievements and Easter Eggs. In every chapter, there are many of them, which persuade to complete the game once again.

All in all, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is an awesome game. I can't give ten, because the plot disappointed me. However, I don't appreciate the plot, I really recommend this fascinating game.

That said this game its not doing anything all that new either. There is not a lot of originality on offer here. I also felt yet again the violence and tone was somewhat gratuitous at times detracting from the overall enjoyment of the game. Once again too bugs were present that saw this game fail to work on one of my laptops that exceeded the stated specifications.

That said this is still an improvement and we can but hope it continues with the upcoming title.

This is a much shorter game, taking me a little less than 5 hours to complete with a less varied feeling campaign than the new order…
For the most part everything is the same, you have the same weapons, health and armour system from the new order.. though this time you have a crowbar pipe mix that you use to progress through the games world.
And annoyingly these progression moments with the bar make you drop your massive gatline gun you just picked up
The campaign feels like a very typical throwaway first person shooter compared to the new order..
the story feels much less personal, and because of that I really wasn’t invested in the outcome of this story or the games world..
It’s a lot of enemies around every corner like youd expect from a run and gun call of duty campaign..
Rather than the decently paced new order..
theres no breaks, no lockpicking, no climbing through different areas.. its just go forward and interact with things until the game is over, youre thrown right into the action non stop
Though I found myself being more stealthy this time…
As you are doing a lot of infiltration and there are giant armoured robot enemies patrolling areas, really cementing the idea of stealth in your mind.. and like the new order there are scouts walking around that will call for back up if theyre alarmed..
And with the constant dozens of enemies, its worthwhile taking these scouts out as your health and armour will constantly feel drained…
And I had a lot of fun sneaking around and taking them out with a silenced pistol.
the world of the old blood is actually really cool and a bit spooky..
The world design is easily my favorite part of this game as youll go from castle Wolfenstein, to a little villiage, to a graveyard, really mixing up the scenery to keep the game from feeling repetitive despite how repetitive it actually ends up being
and towards the end the game turns into a zombie shooter as youre getting to the bottom of an unleashed dark ancient power that the Nazis are trying to use for themselves…
The old blood has a cool campaign to run through…
But its nothing youll remember long after youre done…
Its essentially The New Order with none of the pacing or great storytelling..
Just mindless shooting for 5 hours…
    Take that how you will.
I give Wolfenstein The Old Blood
    a 7/10

That annoying mechanic of using a welder on everything is gone. This game's stupid gimmick involves climbing up certain walls using pipes because the game designers wanted something similar to a ladder but significantly less fun. Thankfully, the gimmick is kept to a minimum, and it doesn't stop the game from being enjoyable.

What happened to video games? Why is it so rare to find a game that isn't filled with **** The first hour of Doom 3 involved walking around and figuring out wtf was going on. Quake 4 has ungodly amounts of crap story and driving segments. The original Quake would have been an utter failure if the game stopped halfway through and forced players to pretend it was a role playing game for an hour.

+ The emotional Blazkowicz lines are non-existent
+ The Story and Character Development are excellent

    Cons:
    - 60 FPS lock (can be unlocked by id5Tweaker. Don't do it in the console, as the game's build seems to have various problems with the com_synctotime command and will speed/slow the game down )
    - The very long Loading Screen
    - annoying crashes when loading a map in challenge mode
    - some cutscene doesnt play on the first time
    - *only the german Edition* No Option to switch between languages

    Verdict:
The best Version of the predecessor. For the low price of 20€ a really good singleplayer game.

An excellent elaborated plot, flavored with a strong atmosphere and beautiful graphics of the alternative World after the WWII. A lot of hard and juicy game-play, flavored with sparkling sarcasm of the game's heroes. Cool reinforced concrete action game... It's only one is a pity: The Old Blood is short.

A really good prequel to an already amazing first game. The reboot of the series is amazing. This one is short and sweet. Lots of action and not a lot of story. Just enough to make it interesting. Graphics and audio were good as well.

    Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood ist das Prequel zu Wolfenstein: The New Order. Außerdem klärt es wieso es in The New Order keine Mystischen Ereignisse gibt.

Gamplaytechnisch spielt sich The Old Blood wie The New Order bietet jedoch einige Erweiterungen.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Out of all the new wolfenstien games (that iv played) old blood has wormed its way to be my favorite Despite its short length, what did old blood do right that the rest didn't seem to get ? even if this series has nothing i would call a "Bad" entry this one just dose a lot more right then its predecessor and sequels BUT if they just made this the prologue to the new order it would have made the new order a better game and longer , rather than having 2 fairly short games why not combine the 2 ? i know technically this is stand alone dlc but my gripe is still valid

Story: The old blood is to wolfenstien what rouge squadron is to the star wars franchise. a dangerous suicide mission for the blueprints to help take down an impenetrable fortress. except its not sucide for BJ blaskovitch because hes literally unkillable and hes unwavering witch is a contrast to the rest of the games but more on them later. oh and nazi zombies show up in the latter half cause the nazis want some ancient magic ( how cliche) at least these zombies are actually threatening and manage to do some damage compared to other games. the story is basically a vehicle for insanity and for this series im ok with that
    Story : 6.7/10

World building: nothing like showing the world for what ot looked like before to add to the world , every thing has this steampunkish ascetic to it and old forms of fire arms show up , the blot action rifle was my favorite and its design fits really well in this world, its still a brutal unforgiving world but it feels more grounded in this iteration and that i appreciated , they took a step back and looked at the bigger picture. an event pave the way for another event and if you appreciate history like i do i think you will appreciate the world building this game dose more than usual . i do think that the grey areas of morality dont really work to well in these games, humanizing the enemy is cool and all but because of Bj it feels redundant.
    World building: 8.2/10

Graphics: This game Looks great even better than the new order , the art team clearly did a good job here and took inspiration from old castle architecture , and the world war 2 guns in the new wolfenstien style Look great and feel great , technically this game is impressive to the explosions and the animations to textures and models. everything is smartly and artistically designed even after a couple years have past this game still looks better than stuff coming out today.
    Graphics: 9/10

Gameplay: besides the mindless nazi zombie section the level design is smart and its fun and addicting to play, its bombastic action meets tactics witch blends old fps action with the new contemporary type of Fps game. every gun feels fun and i used every one of them, Because i wanted to not because i needed to it was more like a sand box than specific equipment , the way the guns are animated helps sell the fun , they are brutal and deliberate but also grounded so it feels like you could hold these guns in real life , same with the executions , executions are something bethesda games seem to thrive im not saying go out and shoot people or shoe a sharp pipe up their ass but this cartoon violence is really cathartic and The old blood dose this catrathis the best , at least until the zombies.
    Gameplay: 9/10

Sound design: the music is pretty forgettable even if it is fitting , and the gun sound effects are awesome but compared to the later entry's you can see where it is they are lacking. the voice acting was great but its over shadowed by the gameplay to witch you are mostly alone so its not on show very much but the voice acting that is there is really good.
    Sound design: 7/10

The old blood takes you back to that classic setting while maintaining the new gameplay mechanics and graphics.

Some stealth parts are too unforgiving on the hardest difficulties, and the checkpoint system makes for some repetitive shooting galleries as after some heavy encounters with tough enemies, the last standing Nazi would kill you, so you have to re-run the whole level. There is no waypoint, that's actually cool, but sometimes you get stuck not knowing what to do.

Despite those details, Wolfenstein Old Blood is a masterpiece. The story and villains are memorable, and BJ blazkowitz never losses his charm or his passion for killing Nazis.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was very pleasant, so I didn't have the slightest problem jumping on The Old Blood right away. Did he please too? Hard to say. I had mixed feelings about the game. In other words, The Old Blood affects me a bit like the opposite of The New Order. He added something and took something away. Location great, but there were few. It's logical when the game time is around 6 hours. It's hard for me to evaluate. I can't blame the game, because compared to the previous one, it is not even sold at full price, so it is not even a full-fledged sequel, on the one hand, despite the fact that you spend little money on the game, you get little music. I would conclude by saying that it is a good game. But I would probably recommend it only to Wolfenstein fans. Expand

Old Blood is a good expansion to a great game. I wanted more Wolfenstein, and that’s exactly what I got here. Sure, it’s neither as inventive nor as heartfelt as New Order, but it’s a solid piece of content that’s still leagues better than most shooters. If you liked New Order, I’d recommend checking it out.

A juicy addition to a great game. It doesn't try to rebuild its foundations; on the contrary it uses them to deliver new portion of fun. That's how it should look, ladies and gentlemen. [Issue#253]

MachineGames took a step back in terms of design. The Old Blood is basically the same game as before but more action oriented, not as varied in terms of pace and lacking distinct ideas and settings. [07/2015, p.48]
