Wolfenstein: The New Order is a beautiful Action game where you play Captain Blazkovicz, amid WWII. The plot, however, is a game of "what if" and, in this case, what if the Nazis rule the word? You have to find a resistance, save some important pieces and kill tons of nazis in order to defeat the "New Order".

The gameplay is really good for a shooter: you can select among about seven types of guns, grenades, turrets, cut through fences, run, jump, strafe and slide. The battles are extremely fluid (the movements of the characters looks really real), but the AI is "medium-dumb" (they have some intelligence in covering, but you can easily kill lots of sequential enemies just because they keep coming). Something really bad is the stealth: if you don't literally run towards a guy, nobody see you. The game is extremely linear, and the difficulty is medium to easy.

The graphics are amazing (see Anya's eyes), though they are some renderization delay due to the way they did the game. The art is awesome, the places are extremely well represented, what makes the ambiance really well done. The soundtrack is present more at the end of the game, where it takes a more sad aspect, giving more veracity to the ambiance.

The history line is interesting following this "what if nazis won" background, with really good characters (really charming, with amazing dubbing, and really characteristics, since the awesome BJ Blazkovicz till the amazingly bad ass Dr Totenkopf).

Therefore Wolfenstein, the New Order is an amazing Action FPS, with a dropping tears plot, amazing ambiance due to the graphics and concept art, really good fights and also some extras (like golden objects, letters and other information about this parallel word where the nazis won). However, the bad stealth system (forgivable, if you think that blazkovicz is practically a Rambo) and the linearity of the game makes it not PERFECT, but that's it. The rest is amazing: 9/10

Wolfenstein: The New Order tells an alternative story about how Germany has invaded the world. If you like History, this game will be fascinating for you. But if you like FPS, it's a good one as well. Overall, Wolfenstein: TNO was pretty interesting and I have beaten this game a few times because it's cool.

I just wanted to play a good game, and this is not. Can you believe it's capped at 60 fps?, I research and found a few commands in console to unlock fps, but doesn't work, it speed up the game, and the command for speed down doesn't work also. But, I can't believe (again) that you NEED to press a key to pick up a gun or ammo?... this makes the game like a "point and click" game... My God.I just wanted to play a good game, and this is not. Wolfenstein the New Order is a smartly designed first person shooter that places its emphasis on its single player campaign. There is no multiplayer and I don't think the game needs it. There is no multiplayer and I don't think the game needs it. The inclusion of multiplayer may have diluted the single player experience which would have been a shame. Its rare to get a game that focuses purely on delivering a solid campaign. Even the venerable COD series has long featured a single player next to its multiplayer. I don't play COD much these days but I always leaned towards the campaign more than the multiplayer.

Wolfenstein presents an alternate take on history. You play as Capt. Blaskowitz as you shoot your way through all manner of Nazi's. These can range from armored dogs, to mechanized ones known as panzerhunds. You also have giant hulking nazi mechs with advanced weaponry like lasers. The ways of dispatching these enemies are as varied as the enemies themselves. You will pick up weapons ranging from knives, assault rifles, shotguns, grenades, and yes a lazer cutter.

Beyond the varied weapons and enemies the game also does a good job of varying your gameplay. One moment you may be gunning down a room of nazi's while dual wielding assault rifles (yes you can do that), the next you may be sneaking about and trying to knife the enemy commanders. The game features open level designs in that you can approach a given situation in a number of ways. As you take out enemies you will unlock perks which further increase your effectiveness. Stealth kill enough enemies and you gain access to throwing knives for instance.

The story is engaging and as you progress you will come to love your comrades in arms who support you in your mission. The game features a variety of options from graphics to keybindings, etc. It also has plenty of collectibles to be found as well. There are a number of different difficulty options as well. I have been playing on "I am Death Incarnate." It isn't all that hard though the difficulty does seem to spike as you get into the later chapters.

Wolfenstein the New Order is a fantastic shooter and well worth picking up. I purchased it during a steam sale for $10.

BJ Blaskowitz feels like an interesting protagonist and isn't some empty self insert with no voice.

Combat itself is fun while nothing revolutionary. While I understand for narrative reasons you lose your weapons after each mission I kind of end up really enjoying one and being dissapointed not to see it again and finding a different version of it all the time. The game gives you the ability to dual wield also, but for someone that prefers precision and focus when it's offered and preferred as a method of approach, I dont see as much purpose behind crazy run and gun, and this is coming from someone who LOVED the new DOOM. I feel this is a much slower shooter in that regard (which is fine) but I'd prefer more weapon options than the ability to dual wield.

The game also lets you use stealth, and it usually works well in your favor, but the stealth system itself is very shallow and while it serves the narrative and feels fine in the game, it could have used much more work to make it feel more challenging and more dynamic. If I'm able to use stealth, let me use it more to solve the games problems and give me more abilities while doing it.

One thing I loved about Wolfenstein was it's occult side of the story and the nazis pursuit of power through it. This time they go some more grim and scary technology, so that aspect is missed, but it's not truly a major detractor.

With a satisfying story and gameplay, Wolfenstein is a worthy purchase. Ideally i'd give it a 7.5, but because I appreciate the older style of FPS, Im gonna go with an 8 over a 7.

Much as Wolfenstein 3D set the stage for DOOM, Wolfenstein: The New Order set the stage for… DOOM (the 2016 version).

This isn’t a bad thing… but it also means that if you play DOOM before you play this game, this game will seem inferior by comparison in many ways.

You play as William Blazkowicz, a brick of a soldier, sent out to kill some Nazis. After suffering some head trauma, you awake in a world where the Nazis have won, and you, along with a small number of resistance fighters (but really, just you) must win the world back from the Nazis.

The game is broken up into 16 stages of various lengths. Some of these stages (particularly the first one) are pretty long, while others are extremely short, taking less than ten minutes to complete if you don’t bother exploring much. The stages theoretically take place in a variety of locations (though one location actually repeats itself four times, and three of the stages involve very little combat at all – though all of these are extremely short stages), from a Nazi science compound/castle to a concentration camp to… another Nazi science compound, actually, but this time ON THE MOON.

The game is full of Nazi iconography, due to the Nazis having conquered the world, and takes on a generally dark and somber tone – the Nazis have taken over the world and are horrible people. So the solution is to dual wield assault rifles and take them all down.

If this sounds a little bit jarring, it is because it is; the game is at times at odds with itself. You spend a lot of time sneaking around, and indeed, are rewarded for being stealthy (getting stealth kills on commanders not only stops them from spawning infinite reinforcements, but also reveals secrets on the map)… and yet, when you fight, you can dual wield pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, and even sniper rifles. The game is full of ridiculous elements, like Nazi robots, and a base ON THE MOON, and yet the game tries to take itself seriously, with horrible things going on all the time, and the plot as a whole being very somber.

The result is a great deal of tonal dissonance. DOOM solved this problem by making you a ridiculous killing machine who doesn’t care about the plot IN CHARACTER. Wolfenstein… doesn’t solve this problem at all, which sort of undermines itself.

And this is hardly the only way in which it does so.

The game is full of collectibles, and you also unlock “perks” by accomplishing specific tasks in game, such as killing 80 nazis with assault rifles from cover, or killing 20 enemies stealthily with throwing knives, or blowing up multiple enemies at once with a grenade. Some of these are pretty easily done, but others require more doing, and some of the collectibles and all of the perks give you benefits for doing them – which creates a problem.

The thing is, the game really wants you to keep on moving. But the collectibles encourage you to spend a bunch of time searching around, while the perks often encourage somewhat unnatural behavior to unlock them. Both of these mess up the gameplay flow of the game.

The worst of it is, this is probably deliberate; while the game has 16 stages, as previously noted, a number of them are very short. As a result, beating all of the stages can be done within 18 hours or so even if you do look for collectibles… but the game is probably half that long if you just go through without really exploring. The thing is, the exploration in most of the levels doesn’t really give you a whole lot of bang for your buck, and as noted, the tonal dissonance of the darkness of the story and its more ridiculous elements undermines your ability to take the story seriously. It is a grimdark world, and like most grimdark worlds, it verges on being a parody of itself, and it isn’t really clear if it knows how ridiculous it is being.

I may sound down on it, but honestly, there were a number of moments in the game where I had fun. The thing is, the game kept feeling like it was pushing back on its own fun, and it didn’t feel like it quite made up its mind.

In the end, Wolfenstein is a power fantasy that periodically disempowers its protagonist, only for him to overcome it and start murdering Nazis again. It’s fun killing Nazis, but nothing here is as much fun as killing the demons in DOOM.

My personal advice? This is an okay game, and if you haven’t played DOOM yet, you’ll probably find it decent.

But honestly, I’d just recommend playing DOOM instead. You’ll probably have more fun with it, and it knows what it wants to be.

The flaws I found are insignificant compared to the amazing bullet-hell fun that the game is. I'd say it is a tad easy even at Uber difficulty but not throughout the whole game. Some areas are ridiculously hard.

It's an amazing game. Nazi killin' never looked and felt so good!

In this game you can expect:

THE GOOD - Weapons that are pretty fun. Also dual-wielding shotguns and assault rifles... - Moon nazis. - Occasional moments of brilliance (e.g. night train scene). - Wolfenstein 3D easter egg. THE MIXED - Collectibles and perks that feel really out of place and are often useless. - Linear corridor shooter gameplay - basically a CoD

    THE GOOD

    - Weapons that are pretty fun. Also dual-wielding shotguns and assault rifles...

    - Moon nazis.

    - Occasional moments of brilliance (e.g. night train scene).

    - Wolfenstein 3D easter egg.

    THE MIXED

    - Collectibles and perks that feel really out of place and are often useless.

    - Linear corridor shooter gameplay - basically a CoD clone with nazis.

    - Quicktime events.

    - The difficulty setting translates into gameplay experience like this: very very easy -> very easy - > easy -> shotgun-nazis-more-powerful-than-bosses

    THE BAD

    - Silly, ridiculous narrative which is totally unbelievable. It would have been fine if the authors had presented it as such. Unfortunately the game takes itself too seriously.

    - A lot of cutscenes, including a totally unneeded and pointless love subplot with a sex scene.

    - Crappy close-up textures and vegetation, courtesy of idTech 5 engine. Devs tried to hide it with film grain effect and a ton of lens flares. Unsuccessfully.

    - Stealth system & AI is beyond atrocious (AIs don't even flinch when they find their killed comrades).

    - Throwing a knife into a Nazi's palm insta-kills him even though he can otherwise take multiple shotgun blasts.

    - You lose your weapons after every mission.

Tl;DR: If you like this kind of games, grab it while it's on sale. Otherwise you are not missing out on much.

    TLDR:
Would i recommend a game i have to spend a few hours in order to make playable?
NO. Decent game which was not made for PC Gamers. I had to spend several hours to make the game work and behave acceptably, so that obviously poisoned my further experience. So take this review with a grain of salt. However. Developers. I am a PC Gamer. More than that, i am your client.

    NO.

Decent game which was not made for PC Gamers.

Developers. I am a PC Gamer. More than that, i am your client. And as such i expect specific things in a game when i give you money for it. Instead, i ended up doing your job and fixing things left by your ignorance.

    1. The V-Sync is broken and not working as of the date of this review (mid-2022). Good thing NVIDIA control panel has the ability to force V-Sync in specific applications.
    2. The Frame rate is locked at 60 FPS (and 30 FPS in cut scenes). Took me a few hours but i found a solution in the form id5Tweaker (thank goodness for that!).
    3. The field of view setting is maxed out at 100 (with no weapon scaling) and still looks claustrophobic. Once again - id5Tweaker saved the day there!
    4. So in conjunction with a broken V-Sync, 60 FPS, and a field of view of a box the game was looking pretty crappy from the get go. A self-speaking failure for a first impression indeed. But that's not all.
    5. So why isn't there a Save Game feature? Wasn't this invented like 100 years ago and used in the original Wolfenstein? Developers, why do you like forcing me to start over and over and over from some ambiguous checkpoint. Do you think i enjoy this experience? Or do you like causing pain?
    6. Speaking of check points and inability to save - in a few instances, after i died, i spawned in a new location which i did not reach on the map. Now there is a story submersion bummer if there ever was one.
    7. Why can't i skip the intro videos? Am i paying to watch commercials every time the game starts? Yes, i do know "id" made it. Thank you. Got it. Get me playing already!

The story is good, the cut scenes are very well made (though limited to 30 FPS), the main characters modeled oh so well and believable (except the protagonist, whose aloof look and cute grimaces make me want to vomit). Indeed, Set Roth's dialogue writing, animation, and voice acting pretty much makes this game and is of superior execution. The game play is - how should i put it - ok, but lacks proper pacing and rhythm; it's juts all over the place.

So all in all, developers, i understand your directives came from top, but don't you find it strangely uncanny that in a game about tyrannical overtake, you are rubbing your supporters of freedom of basic control right from the start? And you also like to cause pain? Makes me think about your character and moral values.

I bought this game with virtually no expectations... a generic shooter with Nazis, living on the great name of its ancestor from 1992. Well, while it's not a milestone of the genre, I ended up having more fun than I had with any other FPS in recent years. Here's why I enjoyed it (spoiler warning):

Well, while it's not a milestone of the genre, I ended up having more fun than I had with any other FPS in recent years. Here's why I enjoyed it (spoiler warning):

+ The game presents its story quite well. You play most of the time in the 1960's after Nazis won WW2 in 1946. I really liked the dire atmosphere.
+ Level design is superb with lots of diversity (even underwater, outer space). I didn't expect that moon level... fantastic.
+ Enemy AI is smart, shoots from cover, can be flanked, reacts realistically when the player is sneaking.
+ In many situations you have the option to sneak and kill silently use knives/throwing knives or suppressed handguns and avoid having to deal with large groups of enemies.
+ Firing your guns feels and sounds good.
+ Choosing the right weapon for certain enemies becomes essential in mid and end-game.
+ The game is quite challenging at the two highest difficulty settings.
    + No quick-time events

Return to the castle Wolfenstein is my favorite Wolfenstein, with all the fun gameplay and dark-horror design, Wolfenstein The New Order continues the dark heavy story with modern gameplay that fits the game very much, its a piece of art, story design and music speaks for itself really cool game

A great reimagining of the series, delivering a fun experience to shooter fans, while bringing a good story and some solid mechanics that feel fresh but still know the roots of the franchise.

The only thing in the new Wolfenstein that turned out really well is music. Shooting is decent and some weapons give proper sense of power, but developers failed to build an interesting game on these foundations. It has some good moments but none of them lasts long enough to be satisfying. Plus the writing is terrible and the way the game constantly forces all that ‘war is evil!’ preaching and Blazkowicz’s moral dilemmas down your throat is ridiculous. I actually couldn’t decide whether the game is being serious or not. [07/2014, p.56]

If you've enjoyed shooters of old, you'll love how freshly packaged this one is.
