The narrative is surprisingly good and kept me interested, the stealth/gunplay feels good, and the difficulty is just right. Even the graphics make up for the tech limitations with a clever art-style and quality character animations. I honestly haven't had this much fun with a FPS since Far Cry 3 (which is a very different animal). The game lasts longer than most and creates a creepy/campy/fun atmosphere in which to slaughter Nazis. I can't wait to see more from this developer. Minus one point for the hour I spent tweaking graphics with console commands. Otherwise, a top notch shooter that feels like fan-service to the id and 3drealms of yesteryear. Expand

Good solid shooter. I didn't expect much when I saw Id Software among developers after the failure they call Doom 3. Anyway, this does not happen often - sometimes levels are really full of enemies everywhere, sometimes you can enjoy beautiful landscapes. Travel to the Moon was good idea, though I cant say I was impressed. The game was fun at the beginning and at the end, quite long and sometimes boring. Anyway, it is hard to make good shooter. While plot of Wolfenstein is far weaker compared to, say, Bioshock: Inf, combat system is weaker compared to, say, Dishonored, this is very good shooter overall. I know its hard to make good game nowadays, and this game is good. Not perfect, but good. Expand

Solid story, funny dialogues, and action fps with no excessively tricky parts, 10 / 10 for me, it was a long time since my last fps, thanks for taking me out of Diablo grinding :)

What a treat for a FPS fan. This is the most fun in singleplayer I've had since a really long time.
The only downside is the use of id tech5 which doesn't always deliver.

This is really a solid FPS game! Well designed levels, running speed allows for quick, heart pumping action, sounds contribute to the atmosphere and the storyline is surprisingly interesting. The performance of the game engine is exemplar, at 60 fps at all times, using a Titan X for 2560x1440 resolution.

An absolutely amazing game overall. The gameplay feels smooth, the animations are nice, the aesthetic fits the grim tone of the story, and the story is just legendary. It dethrones popular story-based titles like Bioshock and Portal without trying. While it may lack the replay value of games such as Dishonored, it's an amazing title that is on sale on steam at time of writing.

I did not know that a new Wolfenstein was in the works until about a week before its release. I was not hyped in any way and Wolfenstein was a long forgotten franchise for me, the last release from this franchise I played was RtCW back in 2001. Which was pretty interesting back in the days.

I did not have any urge to play it until I heard the song - German version of House of the Rising

I did not have any urge to play it until I heard the song - German version of House of the Rising Sun. I really liked it and wanted to check out more. I really like the idea of alternate history and what would happen after that.

I was expecting something more open-world and for a moment it seemed that that was something that they were going for (at least partially with the mini-quests) but perhaps they did not have the time to develop it. Storywise - the game takes place in alternative timeline where Nazis won the war thanks to some impossible technology. The only person who can stop this is William J Blazkowicz - main protagonist in all games of the series. I think thats really refreshing after all those modern and current warfares of the 2010's

I was a bit disappointed as character development was a bit lacking although it was fun to listen to various languages being spoken instead of English with funny accents (mainly German and Polish). The narration is a powerful mix of Inglorious Basterds with Iron Sky and a pinch of Ocean's Eleven.

As for the gameplay - it offers a joyride of a modern shooter with scripted events and some oldschool mechanics (you can regain full health only with medpacks) - ridiculous double weapon setups and hordes of enemy soldiers and robots. It is not your typical shooter, although feels more up-to-date than most of oldschool ride like recent renditions of Shadow Warrior or Rise of the Triad.

Visually - it is certainly not a next-gen experience. Although I like the smooth look of faces and cinematic cutscenes the visuals seem somewhat lacking - idTech 5 is still a work in progress ridden with problems - low res textures and some heavy texture popping almost all the time (I guess 4 GB of RAM is to small for this engine) amd I do not think that we will see it in many games. What is sure - it certainly has a different feel than all those unreal engine games.

What is disturbing - the download is 40 GB - just like Titanfall - and - again like in Titanfall - theres vritually nothing in this game to justify it. I am no developer but I did not see any high quality textures nor did I hear that much variety of sound to justify it.

Other than that - the games was a fun ride for 10 hours. I doubt I will replay it though - there is alternative timeline which gives you small changes in layout, there are some collectibles and game modes to unlock, however nothing worthy of repeating it, at least not immediately after.
Given the pluses and minuses of the game I had hell of a fun, more than I ever had from single player modes for quite some time. Bioshock was interesting but not that fun. Dishonored was pretty close but again - it was a different kind of game - lacking the pure mindless fun. For me, given its minuses, its a solid 8.

"Solid" is the best word to describe this game. It's neither groundbreaking nor a 10/10 title, and has a few off-putting segments (the forced stealth sections come to mind), but overall it manages to be a fun title with a cool aesthetic and a great soundtrack.

The only thing i did not like was the end.......that really sucked and reminded me of mass effect 3 ending. You go through all that just to die and lose the girl.......come on Bethesda........people want happy endings after killing bad dudes !!!!!! The weapons available are quite far ranging and you will need to use several of them to get through the game...especially the weapon that doubles as a laser cutter.......you will use that often. Well done, they crammed many different challenges into one game, from driving a submarine, to walking on the moon and more......you will NOT be disappointed in this game (apart from the ending !) A really good shooter with immersing storyline, which takes quite a lot of time to complete (compared to MW* and BF* that's a big advantage). Shooting Nazis has never been so enjoyable before, with a variety of weapons available, and a semi-rpg trait system to kill the Nazis even faster and more spectacularly.

The worst comes in the final boss fight, a two-stage affair which requires a great deal of crate-raiding before proceeding to the next round. Rather than saving when you enter that final round, your save is after the end of stage one, and thus every re-attempt begins with the crates. However, look past the few rough edges and you get a great game. Expand

within the first 15 to 20 minutes of the game, the feel of wolfenstein hit me like a ton of bricks, in that old castle with some overdone, unrealistic Nazi inventions roaming around, alongside the 37 helmets that I guess he stores on his knees, and the food that he instantly inhales to fix his bullet wounds. the game feels like it should, like wolfenstein.

but from ID software, i'd expect a little more.

now here's the thing EVERYBODY NEEDS TO GET ACROSS THEIR MIND. ID software had nothing to do with this wolfenstein or the last, with the exception of licensing their engine to another company so they could do every last bit of designing. you haven't seen anything from ID software since doom 3 and quake 4. so for those of you saying ID is dead because you didn't like the last two wolfensteins, stop being ignorant, buy doom 4, and come back with your opinion.

Actually, I liked this game a lot more than I thought I would. Ok, let's be honest: the story is RIDICULOUS, seriously, but it is told in such a manner that captivates you, and it comes alive with the nice atmosphere the game has.

Of course, the graphics are really dated, and there is some visual problems that are jarring, but the art direction of the game pulled of a superb job.

Same with the story. I mean, even if the Americans failed to free France, the Soviets were pushing hard at the east front, but ok... Nazis won the war. Then we have all sorts of crazy inventions. Robo-dogs. Giant mechs patrolling cities. Nazis in the **** moon. It is ridiculous, but it feels... real, I don't know.

It's only a shame that the game works with a clear dichotomy between good and evil. It's so... manichaeistic. BAD AND DUMB NAZIS. GOOD AND SMART ALLIES. And I find it funny, actually, because the game depicts the Nazis as totally dumb people, but, let's be honest, in this universe they not only won the war, but they have a **** colony in the moon with drones patrolling it.

Anyway, the story is filled with humor, but it's not in your face at all the times. It's more of a nice touch. And I ended up caring for the characters at the end, because they felt real, and they had great development along the game.

The gameplay is a mixed bag of old school and more recent gameplay. But it is really good, challenging and addictive. And the level design is really nice too. Not anywhere near Half Life levels design, but it is good nonetheless.

This might as well be my personal game of the year. It has many flaws, like dated graphics or some gameplay mechanics that just don't connect... But it was so damn funny. And after 12 hours, it was over, and I was wanting for more. I recommend it for anyone tired of recent titles of first person shooters who miss the old days of glory of the genre.

I had hopes for this game - Most of them focused on the words "please, don't suck". I quietly anticipated that the previews will pay off and this will be a decent game.

However, I was not prepared for New Order to be one of the very best shooters I ever played.

The storyline, for video game standards, is nothing short of spectacular - With great pacing, deep, well written characters, good construction, mature themes, astonishing at times attention to detail, excellent voice-acting; New Order can really engage the player emotionaly, something that very few games achieve, and is probably one of the very first shooters that based its storyline primarly on character developement rather than an overly complex plot. It's like watching a good movie or reading a well-written sci-fi novel.

Altough be warned the game sometimes is one the border of good taste. It's sort of a deconstruction of camp - It takes all the cliche wacky nazis tropes and plays them absolutely seriously. What results can be interpreted as a slap in the face of all the chessy nazisploitation media like Iron Sky, Inglorious Basterds or even the previous Wolfenstein games (no hate here - I love all of the mentioned, but trivialising nazism is a fault prevelant in all of them). With its dark, opressive atmosphere, Wolfenstein is one of the heaviest and most depressing games I played - Be prepared for that, in case you are counting for silly Hitler on a jetpack.

Other than the story, Wolfenstein offers very solid gameplay organicaly connected with stealth elements, as sneaking, slow, tactical shooting and dual-wielding rampages all have their place and time in the gameplay. The guns feel great, sound great, the player movement is excellent (brilliant leaning mechanic), enemy AI is agressive and actively tries to kill - It makes for one hell of core gameplay. The levels are large (game took me almost 15 hours to complete), open for exploration and varied, the visuals, while technicaly only decent, are extremely well done aestheticaly and very detailed. Sound design is impressive, and the music is one of the best I've heard in shooters. In a world filled with orchestras and huge electronics, you need huge balls to base your game's mood on calm and beutiful melodies played on a accoustic guitar.

The game's not without it's flaws, however. I found one or two levels to be slightly below the game's average in terms of gameplay and suspense. Some transitions between cutscenes and gameplay are less fluent than they could be, and once or twice the change of story location occurs a bit too rapidly. There are some minor technical issues, and the pop-in of objects at the edge of the screen is really something that shouldn't be in the game. Dual-wielding can be problematic as the game sometimes can't divide ammo between weapons. Lastly, I wish there would have been more guns in the game. The ones that are in all have their place and role and you are encouraged to switch between them depending on situation rather than stick to your favourite one, but given the setting one would hope to find one or two guns crazy not only in their design, but in function as well.

In conclusion, technicaly, the game deserves a strong 8. However, due to the amazing storyline, I raise the score by two bars. This is the direction I would love shooters to take, and I want to see more games as engaging and ambitious as this one. Thus, a 10/10.

The developers put a huge amount of effort in and it shows. A good game and a lot of fun. Also mostly bug free which is something of a miracle in itself. I'm giving it a 9, as it its a lot better than I expected, and once you work out the fixes to some of the issues its a hugely enjoyable and satisfying game that both FPS genre fans and ID/Wolfenstein fans will love.

Firstly the Negative - Graphics - Epic screen tearing and weird things happening to my screen. even on low graphics + low resolution it was still happening... After playing around with the settings, I found putting into window mode fixed that. So I happily play MAX settings setting with Windowed (full screen) and it runs perfectly now. There's also general minor things like no auto pickup, the occasional stupid enemy, basically a lack of extra polish over the game.

The Positive - Straight up single player shooter.... I think Wolfenstein strikes a chord with the hearts of more old school shooter fans, its not a sugar coated glorified call of duty title, that depends on its multiplayer community. It's a epic, deep, rich, lengthy, story-driven, non linear, thrill ride in a clever alternative history full of easter eggs and great characters. This is the best single player shooter I've played since Bioshock Infinite or Deus EX: HR and falls in line with the likes of Metro Last light for dark and gritty... and probably will be the best shooter till Doom... with the way the FPS market is saturated by MP focused shooters. Its nice to be able to get lost in a good story.

Take Wolfenstein for what it is, its own outstanding homage to the Daddy of shooters...to single player shooters of the blast-them-up style... and not a uber realistic camp in cover fest

It needs some refinement, but its a great game.

This game is excellent on almost every aspect, the gameplay is balanced, engaged (you can easily spend several hours playing this game without getting bored, an aspect that has become increasingly important to me as I grow older); the story line is fantastic. Even the less developed characters have weight and gravitas, and the game often gets away with making you care for an undeveloped character, this is because the little they say makes them sound human, vulnerable, real; not just NPCs in a formulaic game.

Wolfenstein takes the classic FPS formula and sometimes it just pays a fitting homage to it, making you kick serious ass, on other times it just mocks it (like on the opening secuence); the soundtrack is amazing and the amount of detail put into it is commendable.

The graphics are fantastic, truly next gen. The acting is superb, and how the game takes a multilingual setting and respects the underlying cultures (polish, english, british, german, jewish) by having the actors speak on the native language serves to immserse you further into the experience.

Also the game does not shy away of the horrors of war, even on this distopian future you will see the horrors of the Nazi war machine, labor camps included and never in fault of mocking historical experiences but rather transforming them with other possible futures.

The story is complex but presented in a very simplistic way, extremely well fleshed out, it never weights down on the experience, only adds to the enjoyment.

Its sad that the game does not offer a new game plus (not that you really need it), since the way the story is presented it almost warranties a second playthrough.

The thing I like so much about Wolfenstein is that they don't overcomplicate things. I see so many FPS's these days with complex upgrade/levelling systems which are just not necessary. Wolfenstein is simplistic, yet a lot of fun.

The story was captivating, but not something that had me clinging to my keyboard and mouse desperate to see what happens next. The use of cut scenes and attention to detail when it came to Blazkowicz's personal life did create an emotional side to the game, and added some level of realism. Overall I am satisfied with the story, but I have seen better.

My biggest gripe with the game was the AI enemies and the difficulty. AI seemed to act really stupidly in the game, and often I found exploits which made levels extremely easy. For example, at one point I was sat in a small pipe and the enemies were just bundling up in front of the pipe entrance, unable to crouch down and enter the pipe, whilst I just shot their legs and cleared an entire room without being shot at once. I was also playing on the second to hardest difficulty, and I died around 5 times throughout the entire game, which is too few in my opinion. For a game which defines the FPS genre, I felt the AI were fairly poor. Furthermore, optimisation for the game wasn't great. With a GTX 780 I should be getting at least 100fps with a game like this, considering the visuals and lighting weren't exactly Metro: Last Light standard. The game, despite vsync being turned off, was locked at 60fps, meanwhile I use a 110Hz monitor (overclocked) and could not go above 60fps. The depth of field was also extremely annoying, although you can turn it off manually in the game's notepad settings.

There's a few odd time-skips and jar-you-from-the-action cutscenes that bothered me. Also please turn the **** music up or at least give us the option to tone down the sfx vs music. The only qualm I have with this game is that I have started the game on uber difficulty and I am on like chapter 4 and the first couple chapters were extremely easy but still fun, but then it got somewhat more challenging. But when I choose the highest difficulty in a game, in this case uber I am expecting a serious battle. I want to have to be at my best to be able to complete a mission and if not would die over and over. But it seems like I am just strolling through. I hope they release a patch or something adding a new difficulty level and I hope they do it fast because I would start my game over and use that difficulty. Anyway, GREAT game with great shooting style, mechanics, story and content. I would give it a solid rating of 9.4 out of 10.0 (come on now... 7.5 is too low, if Ghosts is rated an 8.0 than this game is definitely a 9.4!) Worth the 60 dollars IMHO. Expand

Some people will like the dark story, which seems so real and is becoming even darker while the plot progresses to the end. All the characters' voiceover is perfect. Germans speak real German and Polish people speak real Polish and their English has a foreign accent. Anya, one of the protagonists, is played by Alicja Bachleda - a fine Polish actress. The protagonists are presented in such a way that a player starts to care about them. Although the main hero, B.J. Blazkowicz is tough he doesn't seem invincible. The alternative future where the game takes place is scary and worked up to the tiniest details. Transition from the 40s to 60s is shown perfectly. One of the coolest thing about the gameplay is that the player can decide to go all the way in or to sneak in, kill the officers silently and avoid enemy reinforcements. The graphics are ok and although some look ridiculous (e.g. wires on the floor which are completely flat, 2D textures) they do not affect the fun a player has.
I will sum up this review with my own opinion. I had a great deal of fun, the story sucked me in and I loved the Polish elements in the game as much as the 'realness' of this alternative reality. I didn't like the ending - it was like someone switched off the lights suddenly and told me to go to sleep. I also disliked the brutality of some scenes. This made me want to kill all the German Nazis and I didn't get my satisfaction neither while the torture scene in a Polish cellar nor by killing all the bad guys and one nasty Nazi b*tch.

Trivia: Did you know that in Germany the players will not fight the Nazis? That's right. The German version of the game does not have Nazis at all. Intriguing...

As an action FPS single-player experience I was happy to see they did try to break up the usual linearity. Stealth game play felt great and exploring for concept art, collectibles, and Easter eggs was very enjoyable and didn't distract from the regular game play. I played my first play-through on I AM DEATH INCARNATE (Previous titles top difficulty, Second to UBER this time around), I definitely feel like I should of played on UBER as the only times I actually died where a very obvious and understandable mistake early on, and some choice sections later in the game where difficulty spiked. (Without any spoilers, one particular section on a bridge involving a helicopter was fairly difficult compared to the rest of the level)

I'm not sure if I will go back to play it again for collectibles, or to finish the Enigma Code, but I would say my time playing through the story made the purchase worth-while. If you're a fan of Wolfenstein or you just enjoy good single-player story FPS games, definitely give this game a shot.

I don't always play single player games.

But when i do, they have to be fckin good.

This game is quite fckin good.

Except PC optimization, i believe this game has no better graphics than BF3, yet it was quite choppy at moments.

I enjoyed Wolfenstein: The New Order even more than Half Life 2. The story is just great and interesting and it lasted long enough. I absolutely loved playing this game except that the boss battle was slightly annoying.

Wolfenstein: The New Order brings incredible gunplay, interesting story with some fantastic characters, along with optional stealth sections (you can actually blast through them). The graphics look nice, but aren't the best.

Also, be aware that you need a really good machine to run it at stable 60 frames per seconds.

Is it worth $59.99? Debatable, price tag aside. This game for what its worth is probably one of the better games I have played this year, if not the last as well. It really goes back to its roots when it first came out so many years ago, and they were able to create a system and story that is not only creative but entertaining. Who doesn't like shooting Nazis, I mean come on.

Great game, totally returns to old school style shooters. This game must be played in 'I Am Death Incarnate' at least. Graphics are a bit disappointing, but once you are merged on the history and game play, it doesn't matters anymore. The huge size of the download, almost reminds me, how I felt, when I bought physical games and the long wait from the store to the house.

I had a great time 'going back' to a world where the job was to shoot Nazis.

W:TNO has a very engaging alternate history story-line and turns BJ into a surprisingly earnest character. I was very pleasantly surprised. My one criticism is in regards to idTech5. How, after 3 years (RAGE), has the texture pop issue not been resolved. In certain phases of the game, it's so noticeable

One of the BEST FPS games of the last years. Graphics, sound, controls are great, but what is really superb is the story. An alternate route of history and most important of all (especially after this years euro-elections), it sends out a strong anti-nazi, anti-fascist message. Congrats to Bethesda. Make sure you have a powerful enough PC to run this game (you will still have pop-in, but it will be severely reduced). Okay so the TNO is set in the alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II. That is all you need to know because the story is just amazing and trust me, you will love it. The gameplay is described as "old-school" and it is, but at the same time, it is very refreshing compared the crap FPS that come out nowadays. Picking up health and armor (in my opinion) is better and more realistic than the covering behind something mechanic to get your health back. It just fits this game very well. You can also duel-wield weapons which is very fun. If you want a new, amazing FPS experience with a story up there with Half-Life and Bioshock, then get Wolfenstein: The New Order. Expand

Also the PC controls are really unpolished. I kept mapping and remapping all the time. For example the game starts with left Shift as the sprint and left control as the crouch and then expects you to be able to press w cltr sift all at the same time, that just doesn't work ... did they even try a play thru?

Some imaginative detail in the environments. Enemy AI is sometimes challenging, as flanking manoeuvres or storm-troopers with armour can be particularly challenging if you don’t have the right ammo/weapon. In fact, on the higher difficulty levels, some of the combat scenarios are pretty tricky. Unexpectedly good stealth elements to the game allow for some degree of choice as to how you progress through levels, but even when alarms are raised and gun-battle commences, it is mostly a lot of fun. There’s also an impressive set of solid weapons to play with, and even duel-wield and upgrade.
I had some texture pop-in issues, exactly the same as with Rage, but after downloading a beta Nvidia driver, the issue was mostly resolved.
Regarding the tone of this nod to Inglorious Bastards, I couldn’t help but stab, shoot and kill Nazis with a certain amount of glee. There’s no love lost here for the future Nazis, after the opening sequence you feel a certain amount of blood boil and literally just want to get to the end as quickly as possible and enact a violent retribution upon the main villain. Ethically I have no problem with this, as long as you take it in the same vein as watching a Tarantino movie. You’re asked to commit an enormous amount of violence, but at no point did I feel worried that I had become “as bad” as them. There’s also some dry humour here too. Imagine walking around a Nazi moon base and reading a newspaper cutting that says that Brits have gone off fish & chips and now find sauerkraut more palatable!
As much as I generally enjoyed playing this game and would definitely recommend it to those looking for a challenging and engaging FPS single-player campaign, I’m taking two-points away from Wolfenstein: The New Order for two reasons: Firstly, the final boss sequence is literally impossible on the harder levels, and rather annoying and not a lot of fun; the ending seems a tad rushed. The other reason is due to the texture pop-in issue. Surely someone should have realised, post-Rage, that the ID tech, whatever it is, has graphical/driver issue that should be fixed BEFORE launch. Was kind of annoying.

It's been a while since I played Wolfenstein: The New Order but what I remember was a solid shooter that, better than many games, manages to create a strong atmosphere that doesn't let up (for most of the game anyway).
The gameplay is indeed solid, if you are willing to overlook "atmospheric" QTEs that should have been replaced by cutscenes rather than bothering you with button prompts (when will devs finally realize that QTEs are DO NOT COUNT as gameplay?), with some weapon choices that leave you a fair amount of freedom in how to kill the enemies and even some stealth options - Yes, there are missions that are almost impossible to win with the head-on approach but it is almost always an option, just not always a smart one.
The graphical fidelity is certainly adequate, with nice amounts of detail to see in the Nazi architecture, weaponry and propaganda you see around you. Character models are very decent and there's really nothing that outright detracts from the experience. Now, it's not the best looking game in history but unless you have a texture fetish (and should see a psychiatrist), you won't pay too much attention to the walls.
The story, however, is the real sellingpoint. You heard right, it is pretty good, with A LOT of holes and quite a bit of ye olde cliché sauce all over it but the atmosphere really carries what the game aims to do: To give you the feeling of exploring a Nazi-controlled world. The other characters and the events that explore their personas are few but relatively interesting, some outright touching (but again, few and far between). Not to mention a few quotes and cutscenes that give you actual goosebumps.
BUT there is one thing that makes me want to slap the devs around for: The German "originals" for the articles you can find ingame. WHAT THE **** KIND OF IDIOT DID THEIR TRANSLATION WORK?!!! As a German native speaker, English and History student, you bet your ass I take offense at the atrocious work done there in a game that so obviously tries to be atmospheric? Did somebody's first-year German student cousin do the translation into German? A guy who has no ****ing clue about what propaganda speak was like in German newspapers under the Nazi regime? ****ing hell. I could have done a WAY better job than that, not that that says much, because pretty much EVERYBODY could have done a better job. And this is infuriating because the English version of the article is okay, better even! But the German version is "pseudo-censored" and not the slightest bit authentic but full of "politcal correctness" and thus weird expressions that have no place whatsoever in a game with this content or context? But even if the political correctness was done on purpose (which would be reason enough to slap all the devs in charge several times with the Duden [think Oxford Dictionary but for German]), there are still sooooooo many grammatical and spelling errors in the German text and signs you find in the game. What a letdown in an otherwise strong atmosphere, and a real kick in the teeth.

But you know what's an even bigger kick in the teeth? That's right, the German version itself! Not only do we get no access to the original, English voicework (but are stuck with the mediocre-at-best German voiceover and translation that doesn't even come close to the atmosphere), they also screw us over with "no less atmospheric alternatives" for the Nazi symbols. ANY REPLACEMENT IS LESS ATMOSPHERIC AND AUTHENTIC. That is the thing about authenticism. Now, I know why German laws are as they are but this is stupidly exaggerated in this context.

All in all, the game is worth a look and buy if you don't have to put up with the kind of **** German citizens and Steam users will have to put up with.
And for those who do: I explicitly don't condone piracy. Should you be presented with legal or grey-area ways of acquiring or playing the game in its original state, however (like playing it while you're abroad, which is what I did), don't hesitate.

Why? Because the gameplay itself is fun, true... but is it exceptional? I don't think so. I'm no FPS expert, but dual wield? Seen that. Peeking around the corner? Done that. Perks? Seen better.

However, there are the "soft" aspects beside the gameplay that make this game stand out.
    - first and foremost, the game wasn't overhyped. It could have been, very easily. But pre-release, it was handled carefully with more focus on building the atmosphere rather than on advertising new features, hours of gameplay and whatnot. As a result we ended up getting more than expected.
    - going on, the setting is superb. It is familiar thanks to countless clichés, but still very compelling and well supported by game's grey-red colour scheme, good design and architecture and audio extras. And it can be surprisingly oppressive at times.
    - Last but not least, the story - It is based on how uber Blazkowicz is... but it's enjoyable and you don't feel the need to stop and think how the hell is he still alive, much like in good action movie. So that's fine. And for most of the game I felt curious, what will happen next, so that's ok, too...

...however, story is in the end the reason I gave 8/10, not 9. More specifically, the story (for me) failed in two things:
    - your romantic interest is one of the blandest characters. There is better bonding scene with "human computer" than with a girl you plow.
    - but most importantly, the ending is disappointing. The story sets up some pretty cool stuff, but in the end, there is either weak or no pay-off. And that's really a shame.

So, final comment: I enjoyed Wolfenstein very much for most of the time. However, final ~15mins were quite a letdown to a degree that it did manage to spoil my overall memory of the game.

The first chapter left my jaw dropped and I think it was as square as BJ Blaskowicz's by the end of it all. Amazing action: the way the controls handle is very good. Great attention to detail in the environment, very satisfying combat. Very intelligent game from the characters to the story with great nods to the older game, especially the throwback first level of the return to castle wolfenstein! Honestly, this game was an incredible surprise. So good. Made me really happy I wrote this review. Expand

While games like Watch_Dogs are (clearly) paying for their reviews, along comes a AAA title that actually deserves the score it gets. There's a few port woes here and there, but Wolfenstein: The New Order is all around a fine game. It has a lengthy campaign filled with great weapons, sound mechanics and lots of creative sets to explore - filled with creative enemies to dispatch. The plot is a consistent high-point, breaking the 10 hour mark (which, for an FPS title in this day and age is spectacular) and keeping you interested until the very last moment. It's filled with interesting characters, the core characters being particularly believable and well thought out. Graphically, it's no masterpiece and it isn't aided by a rough PC port that weighs in at 50GB, but the game is a worthwhile purchase I'd happily recommend to anybody looking to play a solid first person shooter title. It gets an 8, it deserves an 8, and the critics were more or less on the ball with this one. Expand

This is nearly the perfect single player fps game I have ever tried. The atmoshpere, cutscenes and story are very high standard. I have played through 2 times starting on "normal" and played through the second time on "hard" choosing the other storyline.

When I first heard about another Wolfenstein game I was very skeptical and wondered how much one could beat out of an old donkey, but I was throughly surprised. While short in terms of game time, the story was very immersive and well thought out. I also really enjoyed all the little graphical things thrown in like propaganda and the Moon exhibit.

The gameplay was a lot of fun, after the swathe of recent "realistic" shooters churned out in recent years it felt good to get back to the mid-90's guns blazing action.

I wasn't expecting much from this but have not had so much enjoyment from a game in a long time. I think it is the best FPS I have played for years. Unashamedly old-school and at times very silly, Wolfenstein is the game that Duke Nukem should have been. In a market where over-hyped tedium like Watchdogs gets the sales it is worth remembering that games are supposed to be fun. Buy.

Ever wondered if a developer can combine fast, ridiculous and fun FPS gameplay that feels both classic and modern, with a fantastic, memorable and sometimes emotional story? Well, here's Wolfenstein: The New Order, where MachineGames achieved exactly that.

9/10 (Would be a 10 if it were better optimised, I experienced occasional performance issues and it apparently does not run well on

Loved this game. I could not stop playing it, I just needed to see what happened next and then before I knew it 3 hours went by. This game is not short, it took me 15 hours to beat it on Uber. When a character died, for example, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the slimy little *%&# that killed him/her and beat his head in. *Mhh hmmm* As you can tell, The game lets you feel attached to the characters. You just want to see them prevail, but as always, victory always has it's casualties.

The wall and object textures are lackluster, but the character models are just beautiful. The objects on a table aren't acually THERE there they are just drawn on. Some times you will see a pencil drawn on a desk and it's almost hysterical. But that didn't bother me. I'm not the graphics and "Next-Gen" type of guy so I appreciate the developers for what they did. Even if they did cut some corners. MachineGames never did anything to the game that brought me out of the immersion, I was always focused and ready to bring the free-world back.

The only problem I have is... THEY HAVEN"T ANNOUNCED A SEQUEL! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT! PLEASE ZENIMAX LET MACHINEGAMES MAKE ANOTHER, I BEG OF YOU! THEY KNOW HOW TO TREAT WOLFENSTEIN RIGHT.

Although I generally don't pay full price for 10-15 hour long FPS games, this game absolutely deserves it.

Just don't expect cutting edge graphics. They are very good, but we have seen much better with better performance. The game has solid, fun, old-school FPS gameplay complemented by a fantastic, engaging story, written and played extremely well. Highly recommended to every FPS

    the visuals - eye melting
    the gameplay - amaizing
the story - in some parts taken to far away (but still it gives everything what a fps/rpg needs - asylum, castle wolfenstein, concentration camp, THE MOON)
and i like that they inclueded zagred and the NDH (naci germanys ally)

A great reimagining of the series, delivering a fun experience to shooter fans, while bringing a good story and some solid mechanics that feel fresh but still know the roots of the franchise.

The only thing in the new Wolfenstein that turned out really well is music. Shooting is decent and some weapons give proper sense of power, but developers failed to build an interesting game on these foundations. It has some good moments but none of them lasts long enough to be satisfying. Plus the writing is terrible and the way the game constantly forces all that ‘war is evil!’ preaching and Blazkowicz’s moral dilemmas down your throat is ridiculous. I actually couldn’t decide whether the game is being serious or not. [07/2014, p.56]

If you've enjoyed shooters of old, you'll love how freshly packaged this one is.
