Not a great follow up game. First game was really made you wanting more and was in a great tempo from start to finish. But this game, funny moments here and there but nothing new, when you finished you ask yourself "why even?".

It gets a pass as a generic shooter, but the game's message is very unusual. In American culture, the "greatest generation" was a generation of white nationalists who stopped the nazis and saved the world from fascism, and America maintained racial segregation for two decades after the war ended. The game takes this idea and then draws a moral parallel between the greatest generation and the nazis, implying that the nazis were generally a positive thing in the world or that they could be considered the good guys in their own way. My ancestors came from a country that was ravaged by the nazis, and it angers me to think that some game developer would either downplay how evil their regime was or downplay the heroism of those who faught against them.

The game also fails to make a distinction between a professional soldier and a politician, and this makes the story more confusing/stupid than it should be. By the game's logic, all US soldiers during WW2 must be registerd democrats. Imagine playing a game on the German side, and the NPCs repeatedly refer to war against "the democrats" when it really means American soldiers. The entire game is like this, and it's the kind of thing a 10 year old would write. It repeatedly refers to Germans as nazis even though nobody at the time talked like that, and the soldiers themselves would not self identify as being representatives of that party. This is why British, French, and American soldiers always refered to enemy soldiers as krauts, Jerries, the hun, or the boche. If you were being polite, you would just call them Germans.

It seems like a good game that is burried under garbage writing. This is a game that wants to tell a story and teach a lesson, but the story and lesson are just awful. I don't even know how it's possible to make the story subtract from the game, but they pulled it off.

Gameplay - 5/10, gunplay doesn't feel powerful, levels are extreme corridor-minded. AI, super agressive - cool BUT you are can die from 3-5 good landed bullets even on easiest difficulty. You'll be dying a lot and you'll rage because epic moments gonna be ruined by insta-death from nowhere.
Story - 6/10 - US under nazi setting is old and doesn't really work. Character's actions are not very natural.

I start a game, excited and so on, it is Wolfenstein II let's kill some nazies.. oh.. what I'm looking at? Some unneeded drama from main hero's childhood. For some reason main hero is super attached to a character who was just a cardboard background in 1st game? O_o... Ooookay. Further cutscenes are trying to show me why Nazi's are a bad thing - I get it... but where is cheesy killing mfking nazies action I loved 1st game for? Nope.. still don't see it.

Next 2-3 hours into the game, I'm raging because of super sensitive main hero's health bar.. it drops from 1 bullet to 10%... I lower difficulty level, nope, still same **** - AI is shooting with 100% precision. Oh! Epic moment, huge experimental soldier-robot appears in the middle of corridor, and...... shoots me dead with 1 bullet, replay from checkpoint>replay from checkpoint>replay from checkpoint>replay from checkpoint.... "i'd better stop playing for today.. may be tomorrow".

So.. you get the idea. BUT I'd say it is very classic FPS from 2000-2005 times. Sadly gameplay is absolutely NOT like DOOM, which was fun, adictive, balanced.

    overall score: 6... sadly.

PROS: Good graphics + Cool guns + Correct checkpoints

CONS: no controller mapping!!! i can't believe in 2017 a big game like this don't allow you to swap axis (i'm use to walk with the right stick and shoot with left) or refine other buttons

Lets start from negative stuff. Gameplay...well. Im not rly fun of just shooters, like doom and wolfenstein. This is just a non-stop shooting without any requirements from your brain. It can be funny for first several hours, but then...well you just playing for cut-scenes. As people said before, they are too leftish. I understand (at least i hope) that the whole game is just a huge ironic performance. And all this leftish stuff may be a part of it...but im not sure it was rly required. What is more, they could make much more out of it. So many nice characters, stories, nationalities, and they are not revealed at all.
What are positive sides? Well, first i must admit amazing work done to create the lore of the game. All those postcards, amazingly made locations, songs etc. making it rly interesting to explore the places where missions take place. I enjoyed so much walking on submarine, american streets, listening to NPC dialogs, that is one of my favourite part of the game. Its also has rly nice soundtrack, pretty funny plot, sometimes i even was laughing rly a lot. In this part of wolfenstein there were only a few of bosses...and i liked it, really. I think that was kinda extra and boring part of the first game, especially for casual players. It took much time and efforts for no reason. The second part went far without it. At some moment, though, it all became boring and i asked myself "Damn, how much missions there are before final cut-scene?". And i wonder that this question was asked exactly on the last mission. And this is awesome. The game is not too long, not too short, its on exact size it should be.
Finally, about technical issues. I read a lot reviews here saying the game is crashing, bugging etc. But, well, im playing in 2020, so i dont see any kind of this stuff. Its amazingly optimized, bugs werent met by me, no crashes.

All-in-all, as i usually say about such games, this is an adventure for few evenings, not something more and not something that you will like to replay. I guess, on sales its fine to be bought.

Visually the game is impressive, no complaints there. What was most disappointing to me is how unimpactful and rushed the story and characters felt compared to The New Order.

The game starts off on a high note but quickly devolves into a snoozefest the writers consider "comedy" with ridiculous plot twists and a very abrupt ending. Everything is very anti-climactic and the entire thing feels like it should've been the prologue, so what you end up doing half the time is walking around a submarine doing silly fetch missions, killing Übercommanders (which has ZERO impact on progression), and watching cutscenes, that are, to the dev's credit, quite well made. The rest of the time it's the same run-and-gun where everything kills you in two hits, or stealth, which is significantly easier than just shooting everything.

The New Colossus also has some very baffling design choices:

    - No dedicated 'map' button. The only way to access the map is to visit the journal, which sometimes decides to default to a different tab, so viewing a map sometimes requires 3 button presses.

    - No way to bind the fire button for the left and right weapons when in dual wield if you don't wish to shoot your gun with the right mouse button and aim down sights with the left mouse button.

    - No option for aim toggle.

    - Mouse sensitively when hip firing differs from the aiming/zooming sensitivity and cannot be altered.

    - Excessive and nauseating head bobbing. I HIGHLY recommend downloading New Colossus Tweaker and reducing head bob from 1.0 to at least 0.5.

    - Changing weapons has a very long animation which makes no sense for a shooter that's meant to be fast paced. On higher difficulties selecting another weapon or even changing from single to dual wield in the middle of a fight WILL be the cause of your death because of how unnecessarily long this animation is.

    - Poor level design in some instances. For example, many locations have small objects or crevices on the floor that prevent you from properly moving over them and cause you to get stuck on them as if they were a wall, which is highly disruptive when in combat. Same issue happens when trying to sneak through a door frame that has a slightly elevated bottom part (like on a submarine) and you can't go over it because apparently nobody thought it was an important enough issue to address.

More of the usual hordes of enemies against a single player instead of less in numbers and more in intelligent plans of attack. Enemies spawning behind the player in impossible areas is just lazy programming to creat a false difficulty rating. The lack of a chapter replay feature, present in all other Wolfenstein games, is a big loss.

comparing to the New Order and cutscenes takes too much time to watch. Level design and gameplay mechanics in whole are not so outstanding like in New Order.

    The political part:

I played the whole campaign and did some research trying to convince myself that Bethesda and Machine Games weren't affected by the left wing ideology.

But honestly I failed. And it's nothing about "Making America Nazi-free again".

    Three things in short:

    1. The Polish but non-Jewish father.

    2. The New York underground resistance.

    3. The New Mexico and Texas white supremacy.

And now we are analyzing them one by one.

    1.

In the original Wolfenstein series, BJ's whole family are Polish Jews immigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the Galveston Movement of 1907-1914, which caused by the anti-semitic policy of Russian Empire. W2TNC makes BJ a Texas-born Jew with a Jewish Polish mother but a non-Jewish Polish cruel father. But you can not find much more information about the father during the main campaign and the characteristics really look like right-wing white supremacy racist southern slave owners. There is never a white person inside the United States without obvious pro-Nazi tendency in the Wolfenstein series rendered as a Nazi. This is the first time, not even in WTNO and WTOB.

    2.

The New York underground resistance is obviously inspired by The Black Party of 1966, which is a left-wing Pro-Firearm Socialist black organization who build their finance by selling Maoist little-red-book to left-wing students of University of California, Berkeley. Despite the inspiration by Marxism of the Zionism, the Jews in Soviet Russia were cruelly oppressed during the entire Soviet period from Lenin to Stalin to Brezhnev and the Jews in Poland were oppressed since the 1921-Poland-Russia war until 1991-Soviet-collapse. The Communists killed not so fewer Jews under their overseeing than the Nazis. The Communism-loving Jews like Lev Borisovich Kamenev were executed by Stalin, how could you expect a modern Jew to cooperate with Communists inspired parties like the Black Panther? Never mention that the New Black Panther is an anti-semitic group which is also Pro-Firearm and left-wing and even inspired the costume of the Antifa.

New York is a tiny land that has only 789 Skm with no much room for agriculture and is Nuked by the Nazi in the game but still can offer shelters, clean food, drinkable water and air for the resistance? I'm not racist but why all young Black Panther and there is only one old white in the New York underground resistance? And the female leader can even breed new-born after getting radiated near the ground-zero?

    3.

For comparing, Texas has 695,600 Skm and the No.1 cattle and calves, the No.1 cotton and the No.6 dairy products in the United States. The New Mexico has 315,200 Skm and the No.9 dairy products, No.16 cotton, and 1.3M cattle and calves produce in the United States. But can not shelter a resistance group with no nukes dropped on them?

In history, the African slaves were transported to North America through the eastern shores of the British occupied continent, which makes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina the highest black population states of the US even today. Detroit becomes the highest black population city in the US due to historically more tolerant to African slaves, which by percentage is 84% in around 2015.

But New Mexico and Texas? They are the top Hispanic and Latino population states alongside with California in the US. By data from the United States Census Bureau, Hispanic/Latino and Black/African population percentage in these three states are NM:48.5% vs 2.5%, Texas: 39.1% vs 12.6%, and California: 38.9% vs 6.5%. It's obvious that the Hispanic and Latino population are totally ignored in the game.

    4. And there are many other details in the game obviously affected by left-wing ideology but I will talk about them some other time.

Conclusion: Wolfenstein II The New Colossus is indeed turning left and being politically correct.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Stealth is encouraged, but levels are not designed to make it a viable alternative to going in guns blazing. And even so, combat is often confusing and lacks precision. This game, however, just isn't on par with those titles.

Perhaps then, that's this game's purpose. Where the first reboot was very much right place, right time to remind us what made story driven linear FPS's great and why they dominated the gaming scene for so long, then Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus exists to remind us why they fell out of favor so dramatically. Save your money, this one isn't worth the time.

Note: I have no problems with the political controversy surrounding this game. Shooting Nazis is fun and if you find yourself upset with the idea of a brutal Fascist regime being taken apart brick by brick, it says more about you than the media. I will say, however, I believe the developer embraced the controversy as a way to hype a game they knew was deeply mediocre. This game earned it's rating on a wonky story, crummy gunplay, and it's penchant to spawn enemies behind you and in blind spots.

a fairly good game that has lots (LOTS) of sore spots, especially in the way the stealth system was designed. open combat in the game is occasionally fun, but often just devolves into "here's dozens of dudes in a small area and you just need to find this specific chokepoint and wait it out lol". the variety of enemies is pretty solid for the most part, and the variety of weapons and weapona fairly good game that has lots (LOTS) of sore spots, especially in the way the stealth system was designed. open combat in the game is occasionally fun, but often just devolves into "here's dozens of dudes in a small area and you just need to find this specific chokepoint and wait it out lol". the variety of enemies is pretty solid for the most part, and the variety of weapons and weapon modifications is a nice blend.

in terms of writing, which seems to be the biggest point of controversy for the game, it just isn't that good. the humor in the game is mostly out of place (ex: "bro! toilet! i'm gonna **** in it!" scene), and draws heavily away from the seriousness of the subject matter. it's like if SpecOps The Line sprinkled in a bunch of "joe mama" jokes in between gruesome firefights and blowing up civilians. the wyatt character jumps out as a particularly heinous example with some "Haha XD look he's doing acid!" humor -- a character who previously spent ~12 years struggling with survivors guilt and witnessing some of the worst crimes against humanity possible. set roth feels like they've turned him into larry david out of nowhere, because "hahaha lets make him sound like he's from seinfeld" (which seems a little counterintuitive in a game that tries to take a strong stance against racism). the engel character just kinda gets ruined, and throwing in a generic "i hate my dad" backstory with very little depth just didnt help.

in terms of politicization, the handling of the message was mixed: a lot of the dialogue just kinda feels forced and out of place, given the context of the situations (ex: "yo i know we're getting raided by nazis rn, but it's time for us to drink moonshine and to argue with you about how the 1940s american government was actually not so nice!" scene). also, the idea that the american people are fine supporting the nazis now, but then BJ blows up a few nazis, and now they dont want to suppor them any more -- huh? a good chunk of the american population was around to see the overthrow of their government, and theres a good chance everyone knew one or two people that got nuked, but its all water under the bridge now. the political landscape at the time of release was definitely worth exploring, and its nice that the game does attempt to do this, but it really just comes across as lackluster and superficial. it seems like they're just trying to be provocative and piss people off, rather than make people think.

ironically, this game undoes a lot of the work the first game does to show just how evil the nazis were. the darker tones and themes of the first game are pretty much stripped away from characterzing the nazis as evil personified, into characterizing the nazis as a generic teen sci-fi totalitarian regime. the nazis go from being a ruthless war machine into a group of bumbling idiots that complain about their hands getting a little sweaty. i half expect a laugh track to play every time hans starts talking to bjork about how he wants to be an old west cowboy.

this is all especially upsetting given how well the first game handled all of these issues, and how the first game did a pretty solid job of showing the cruelty of the nazis, not shying away from the brutality of the regime, and even offering some well-made critiques of the western countries that fell to the nazis. the world of the first game really does feel like a world that has been conquered by fascism, while the second just feels like the nazis are on summer vacation. given that other games handle political commentary and black comedy very well (namely the fallout series), its mind boggling that TNC just gets it so wrong.

overall, the game is just ok. if you play a strictly combat driven playstyle, the gunplay works and the game plays well. deviate from that too much, and the game gets angry and tells you to stop. the writing isnt great -- even if you're left-leaning, it will make you cringe pretty hard at how poorly the writers try to discuss most issues. the characters feel like a TBS sitcom, the tones and themes of the previous game are gone.

tl;dr: OK game with sitcom writing, lazy handling of serious subject material, and some good gameplay mechanics. get it for free, on sale for $5 (at most), or play it on game pass. or just pass on it, because you could probably have a better time going on a walk or something. if you bought it for $60: lmao.

Same old game as the first one.

Which is also the problem as the first entry wasn't a good game to begin with, but at least it laid out the groundwork.

The gameplay is still mediocre at best with decent at best story. The artstyle remains being the best part of the series.

Game mechanic wise this is the best in the serious. Story and pacing was incredibly mediocre. The game also gave me issues saying my video memory was full, and an hour of troubleshootingv both official and community suggestions didn't fix it.

Buggy and non-enjoyable mess. Wolfenstein: New Colossus pushes progressive real-world political propaganda in its plot way too hard and way too much. For example the part were a clown version of Hitler shoots a character which looks and behaves like Ronald Reagan was distasteful in my opinion. The game is patronizing towards gamer and underestimates intelligence of its audience. This isn'tBuggy and non-enjoyable mess. However it's visually impressive and audio is decent with some interesting music. Level design isn't bad but it isn't good either. I cannot recommend this to anyone except hardcore fans of the Wolfenstein: New Order and far-left game journalists of Polygon, Kotaku and alike. Expand

Bethesda is turning into EA. It's obvious that this is barely a mediocre gaming experience, and yet everyone praises it. Why?! It's the same game as the first Wolfenstein except worse from every technical aspect. Just a generic, nazi shooting game and it's poorly done. How does that happen in 2017. They've cut corners everywhere. Graphics are exactly the same as before only now the gameBethesda is turning into EA. Graphics are exactly the same as before only now the game chokes on shaders, LODs and other inane, unnecessary crap that in turn, amps up the system requirements for NO GOOD REASON. Also, crashes, freezes, lags. Seriously? What a load. To hell with its "messages", characters and whatever else you find to praise undeservedly. If it were a movie, this would make SOME sense. This is a game, and it's barely playable, so who cares about the characters, and political statements? Managed to bore me to tears in three levels. Utter nonsense. Expand

Shooter of the year! It plays great, looks spectacular and sounds amazing. What’s more, despite an apparent lack of seriousness it’s not afraid to bring up difficult subjects, mixing comedy and tragedy in a stunning way. It’s a ridiculously good game. [13/2017, p.30]

The re-ignited fight against the swastika is great action fun once again. It is a pity that a story is not intriguing enough, and it applies to it: what’s long, is stupid. [Issue#280]

Hopefully, by the time Machine Games starts work on Wolfenstein 3, they will find a writer who understands that fast-paced action does not mix well with protagonist’s constant complaining. [Issue#225, p.52]
