The grandmother of PCS 3D Shooting Games for me was more or less starting with horrible controls the buttons and the mouse, the history and legal, 3d and also cool but

Back in 1992 it must have benn a trully groundbreaking game but for today standards its not that good. Still fun but very repetitive and too many levels that feel the same and are not insteresting.

played this when it came out in 1992.
    Too much fun.
Nothing else like it at that time.
    Truly groundbreaking game play
    Highly re playable
Only clunky controls detract from the overall good time.

Wolfenstein 3d is very simple to play, and while it was goundbreaking for the time, it didnt aged very well. Something that i praise is that you move at the speed of light, even faster than Doom. I miss old fast paced shooters, but since all of the attacks are hitscan and enemies are often placed in tricky places, with narrow level design, this is USELESS. Also, levels are often very repetive mazes, with little variety, and while it can offer a challenge with a smooth difficult curve, it can be very bland and BORING to play. The bosses and the music are the best part of the game imo. Music was pretty good and bosses were fun to fight.
At the end of the day, it didnt aged well, but is playable today, something that i cant say the same for a lot of old games.
Even Faceball on all of its versions aged better since that game has multiplayer mode and better artstyle.

Wolfenstein 3D alone is archaic with its grid based map design and no strafe. It might be a historical landmark, but it's bland and dull to play, even back then. Too many bland mazes with little variety.

Given that it is the grandfather of FPS there isn't much a person can say then that it is the best shooter of its time (1992). The reason why I scored it a 7 is because of the maze-like design which gets very repetitive very quickly, which is not great if you count that you have over 60 levels to complete if you count the secret levels. The other thing that I don't like is the lack of a comprehensive story which for an FPS from the 90s is to be expected but because for me personally, a good story is important I will count as negative for this game. On the other hand, the gameplay is very good, while not as addictive as Doom's gameplay was a year later but you can see have it evolved.
To better understand how the FPS genre was evolving over the years i would recommend to also play the Catacomb 3D games and Hovertank 3D.

Catacomb 3D: the catacomb games I would rank them from 4 to 6 depending on the game but overall they are good games for one time play but definitely not to play multiple times over, but it worth it to play so you can see how the FPS genre was defined and i would considered it the real original FPS game from id software.

Hovertank 3D: it was a prototype vehicular combat game. It is so basic it doesn't even have texture mapping and the sound effects and gameplay and the story are so bad i would rank it at best 2/10. But I would still recommend it for a one time play so you can see the full evolution of the FPS genre

Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of destiny: it was a stand alone game released the same year as Wolfenstein 3D but it is basically the same gameplay, maze like maps, etc. I would rank it 5/10 and i dont really recommend to playing it because it doesnt bring anything new to the table
