A failed diablo clone. The game repeats itself too much and the main story is very bad. Some parts become extremely difficult, the difficulty level is very unbalanced. I played for long hours but I don't like it so far. I will try again in the future.

They released Endgame, which takes all of your characters, drops them all to level 40, takes away all of your skill points, all of your talents, all of your Stormfall upgrades that take days to complete, spits in your face, and expects you to just.. be okay with it and do it all again. Now all the gear you've collected cannot be used until you reach the appropriate level.. again. I'm not even going to play the new chapter. It's just not worth it at all.

Don't buy this game. This is like the fifth time they've taken everything away from the players and said "Do it again" without any warning. Every single update makes this game worse. Every single update breaks five times as much as it fixes. Just leave it to die. The devs want this abomination dead.

Okey. If we talking about compain only. Well you can compare it with D3 and PoE and all of them on same ResidentSleeper level. But you can not compare Wolcen with good action rpgs, couse if you start you find Wolcen in tresh bin.

There are no punishment, no challenge, nothing what can push you to change your build. Just a unharm journey into unicorn lands.

Also standart set of untested action rpg bugs:
    Invisible chests.
Clickable companions what prevent your moves.
    Freezes on RTX 3070.

    Will i recoment it? No.

You can't reassign left click. That is insanity and on its face is an instant failure for an ARPG in my book. But let's keep going, because the game honestly isn't all bad.

Almost every skill has a cooldown. This is incredibly lazy design and extremely boring to play ESPECIALLY considering that this game has a unique resource system that could have been used to balance these skills

Almost every skill has a cooldown. This is incredibly lazy design and extremely boring to play ESPECIALLY considering that this game has a unique resource system that could have been used to balance these skills instead. Why do game devs keep putting cooldowns on every skill? Learn to balance your games in more meaningful and creative ways.

Gameplay is overall slow, partially thanks to everything having cooldowns. Don't play this if you like Diablo 2 or POE.

Let's talk good though. Character customization is great, the skill tree is really cool, and the game definitely looks good and sounds good overall.

But realistically the cons outweigh the pros. There are a LOT of cons I didn't cover but I think those are covered well enough by other reviews. Skip this unless you're looking for a casual game to play with friends.

I regret buying WOLCEN: LORDS OF BOREDOM, which is probably the worst hack & slash game out there. Sure, it's got good graphics (good, not great), and a new twist on a skill system, also doing away with the classes, but all that doesn't change the fact that WOLCEN is BORING.
Hack through bland enemies in gauntlet labyrinthian levels, switch your loot, return to store to sell obsolete

Hack through bland enemies in gauntlet labyrinthian levels, switch your loot, return to store to sell obsolete items, rinse and repeat. Let's face it, this genre needs some innovation, the same old - same old is not gonna do it anymore, and just a different class system is not enough. Even the HUD is hardly distinguishable from that of DIABLO and its clones.
Paired with tons of bugs and bad controls (try hitting a mobile small enemy like a rat with a pixel-big click window) I got sick and tired of this game halfway through.
Avoid WOLCEN: LORDS OF BOREDOM like the plague!

Let it sink in for awhile.
They canned the whole segment of their playerbase and got away with it like it was absolutely okay.

    2. The announcement was NOT posted at GOG.
Let it sink in for a while.
They started selling undeveloped game at GOG - and, after deciding to halt the development, they refused to inform their players.

    3. As per what I got from my correspondence with GOG Customer Service, GOG staff was not aware of this... decision either.
Let it sink in for a while.
The developer didn't informed the publisher that the game won't be developed for publisher's platform.

Not mentioning that, as per reviews from my Steam-based brethern, even after actual Release the game is, essentially, incomplete and bugged.

Absolutely horrid game from bunch of scammers.

The only place where this game and these developers may get a positive score is a 'Scam Of The Century' award show.

Wolcen Lords of Mayhem is cast in a similar vein to Diablo. On the plus side its game play is enjoyable, its interface sensible and mostly easy to use. The environments are varied, colourful and well rendered and the enemies including boss creatures, creative and interesting. Cut scenes are well done too and generously sprinkled through the game.

The environments are varied, colourful and well rendered and the enemies including boss creatures, creative and interesting. Cut scenes are well done too and generously sprinkled through the game.

On the downside, there are LOTS of bugs in this game. Enemy targeting is at times "off". The character literally gets stuck on points in a map forcing you to repeat an area. The game took me back to the first episode even though I'd reached the second. Thankfully there was a fix of sorts which required editing a game file. It worked but still who expects that. Lastly the game crashed more than a few times on shut down and locked up so far once during game play.

I found using potions, such as health and magic, a real issue. Either there's yet another bug or some really impractical decisions have been made. Potions even when equipped often take time to show up in the interface and you simply can't use them in the interim. When you do they often fail to offer a significant effect or sometimes just don't work until you mash the Q or W keys several times.

This is a substantial shortcoming that badly undermines game play when you are facing off against hordes of creatures or bosses. The result is a frustrating grind where you repeat some sequences over and over and luck sees you through. I can see why people have not rated this game, game play is poorly balanced, in part because of this.

I really feel this game URGENTLY needs patching and perhaps it was released prematurely? Wolcen has so much promise, if the list of bugs were fixed I'd be unreserved in my praise.

    As it stands 4/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - Being a Kickstarter does it mean we are to look forward to a horrendously stupid amount of bugs and crashes?
This is a question we should put forward to devs before supporting a newbie Kickstarter Games in the future.

(Re Edit - Dropped score to 2 from an initial 4 currently on final mission, almost everything in this game is unbalanced and feels surprisingly untested. Just because your game looks good does not mean we need to excuse 90% of the game being an unbalanced crapfest.... Clearly and Pointlessly Quantity over Quality was concentrated on which is a horrible decision in any game.
Instead of cramming in so much dev time in a massive amount of abilities and passives they should have spent time streamlining the game instead. Most of us would have been happier with less than half of the passives and abilities per class with a stable, streamlined experience.
Because In-game the passives are not enhancing my experience at all in the face of unresponsive controls, delay inputs, movement issues and abilities not working the way they should.
For Example Flesh Golem - This ability is needed for casters but half the time the golem is tanking a single enemy away from you while 10 others are chasing you all over, regardless of using the Taunt.)

RE-RE Edit - WTF Ending was that??? OMG I feel like dropping the score to zero. The devs were clearly under the impression that they were making an experience equivalent to the The Second coming of Christ. Such a fcking disaster especially since the gameplay has promise but every decision around it which should have been to give a good experience was replaced by the exact opposite. The least they could do was give some kind of ending to the damn experience, it would not be that hard to continue the story in DLC after giving the current story some closure.
    Fcking Heartbreaking.

    - infinite money bug so simple a 5 year old child could do it
    - stashs and items disappearing
    - campaign progression changes when you enter another person online game, so if you're on Act 1 and join an Act 3 friend, your personal progress jumps to Act 3
    - devs went silent with really really really small updates, that often break more things than fix
    - bugged everything basically, there is not a single thing in the game that doesn't have a bug

Ok, it is bugged, now lets talk about the game itself:
    - very few skills
    - spellcaster is null, only uses staffs but it sucks
    - endgame even more repetitive than D3, and less fun to repeat
    - loot is bad, uniques and legendary doesn't really mean anything
    - story is OK
    - fashion is GREAT, really, it is more an armor design program than an ARPG, you can do a lot with the transmog system, this is the ONLY great thing about this game
    - 99% of really powerfull endgame is based on a single skill, bleeding edge
    - there are 2 or 3 talents that is mandatory for everyone to dps properly, so build diversity is really bad, we don't know if its a bug or its just bad talent design
    - offline is really just to try anything you want, it is completely modifiable by a single .txt edit, so its good that you cant bring offline char to online
    - descriptions like +10% damage works like **** since most of the damage is calculated weirdly, there are a lot of discussion about cumulative and additive and multiplicative, I dont really understand, but I know that if it says +100% damage to skill X, skill X damage will actuallly jump from 1000 to 1010.

    Final thoughts:
This is clearly an "we are out of money, and we **** up, let's release so we don't bankrupt", it is sad since it had a clear audience, a clear opportunity, but they really **** up.
I think it is Anthem level of incopetence and launch.

The most recent patch nerfed Bleeding Edge - which was indeed broken, also nerfed Winters Grasp which wasn't really. They 'fixed' the exploited gold by simply wiping the gold of anyone who had more gold than some wonky formula they used based on player level, so if you had 'too much' money based on level, it got cut to like 5k*level meaning even legitimate players lost gold.

Fine whatever - but it gets worse - the latest patch broke willpower/rage transfer times bricking plenty of legitimate builds and further broke mob spawns in expeditions creating situations where by stage 3 you may get a map that just does not have enough mobs to spawn the boss.

But wait - there is more! Gold gains from expeditions sometimes just don't work - sometimes you just don't get paid and online mode is laggier than ever. It can take several seconds just to sell an item...

Balance is even worse than before as is build diversity. Right now if you want to run the end game maps, you pretty much need a rare unique item which is absurdly OP - the BIS for every build I referred to in the original review - The Trial belt is basically used to prop up the otherwise unplayable builds.

So the three ways to play the end game right now is The Trial and whatever, BE Crit build, ailment stacking build. That's it. The wolcels are busy defending this by saying you CAN use other builds - and that's true if you're willing to spend 20-30 minutes a map, thus a full hour on a single expedition - but that's not my idea of fun.

The devs are too busy nerfing to test, the nerfs are massive and no effort is being made to improve other abilities sufficiently. Don't even bring up the buff to summons, they are still trash tier worthless and their AI is roomba grade stupid.

    ----------------------

I believe that this game is doomed to complete failure.

The bugs that exist can be fixed. I believe that they will be.

What I am afraid of is that this will never be a balanced game.

I have no reason to believe that the devs understand how to fix it.

Without new experienced talent, they are screwed. The same people who put this disaster of scaling, passives and skills together can't fix it.

The game is pretty, it plays well, the skill effects are satisfying the spinning tree is a neat design....but the numbers behind all of it are a disaster.

I just don't expect the people who put this together in the first place to see where they went wrong.

There are just too many broken passives and they are not being fixed but essentially disabled.

Damage for block %? Pointless now.

Secure Parry (the 10% health regen per counter skill) turned into 1% - made totally useless.

These guys released a game where you could have 100% block and 100% block efficiency and they did this without alarm bells going off in their head when they designed this?

There are too many skills to name that are god tier surrounded by absolute mediocrity. No brainers like getting resists from helmets and chests from Salvatory Anchor as opposed to the other nodes, absurdities like infinite rage from The Heat of Battle interacting with Fatal Pact. Merciless Lethality being a logical choice even for non crit builds...

I just can't wrap my mind around any these things - any experienced ARPG player looking at this tree should see the broken things. This isn't a "They didn't QA this..." issue - this is a "This should have been obvious!" issue. The same that is true for passives is true for skills, there are far too many obvious choices - nodes for skills that everyone will run because of the massive DPS boost - extra havoc orb projectile? Duh. Bleeding Edge that stays around for 4s? Duh.

I would love it if somehow this game became balanced, with real build diversity and skill viability, but I cannot imagine this happening under the control of a dev team who has show that they are absolutely unable to understand the math behind the skills.

This is without doubt the most unbalanced broken ARPG that I have played in over damn near 30 years of gaming..

Worst of all - none of this is rocket science and none of it uncharted territory. There are free to play ARPGs for mobile made by amateurs with better skill balance...

I haven't even touched item balance because that's a whole different can of worms with the loot painfully bland, uninteresting and serving as a poor carrot to chase. Just look at the uniques - they range from utterly useless to absolutely Best In Slot for EVERY build broken.

I don't think these devs can fix the game because at this point I don't believe they have the basic grasp of what a balanced ARPG would even look like.
