Game is receiving bad reviews because of issues with servers on the launch day (due to the massive users concurrence). This happened even to Diablo 3 and not represent the quality of the game.
I could appreciate Act 1 in the early access and the game looks really promising.
I set a 10 to bring a little bit of balance here...

The game is good and has potential. But story is made with hurry, and the game has a lot of bugs (mostly passives not working) and is not really balanced. Maybe in some months goes better

Wolcen Lords of Mayhem is cast in a similar vein to Diablo. On the plus side its game play is enjoyable, its interface sensible and mostly easy to use. The environments are varied, colourful and well rendered and the enemies including boss creatures, creative and interesting. Cut scenes are well done too and generously sprinkled through the game.

The environments are varied, colourful and well rendered and the enemies including boss creatures, creative and interesting. Cut scenes are well done too and generously sprinkled through the game.

On the downside, there are LOTS of bugs in this game. Enemy targeting is at times "off". The character literally gets stuck on points in a map forcing you to repeat an area. The game took me back to the first episode even though I'd reached the second. Thankfully there was a fix of sorts which required editing a game file. It worked but still who expects that. Lastly the game crashed more than a few times on shut down and locked up so far once during game play.

I found using potions, such as health and magic, a real issue. Either there's yet another bug or some really impractical decisions have been made. Potions even when equipped often take time to show up in the interface and you simply can't use them in the interim. When you do they often fail to offer a significant effect or sometimes just don't work until you mash the Q or W keys several times.

This is a substantial shortcoming that badly undermines game play when you are facing off against hordes of creatures or bosses. The result is a frustrating grind where you repeat some sequences over and over and luck sees you through. I can see why people have not rated this game, game play is poorly balanced, in part because of this.

I really feel this game URGENTLY needs patching and perhaps it was released prematurely? Wolcen has so much promise, if the list of bugs were fixed I'd be unreserved in my praise.

    As it stands 4/10.

Ok, now let's talk about what made like the game despite the thing I've said here, the game has a solid gameplay, great sound design, and a skill tree mechanic that is outstanding, the liberty that the game gives you to create your builds is amazing, you can make characters from a simple warrior to a gunslinger mage, one of the best mechanics in this game is that there's no class! yes, you can choose what your first weapon and ability will be, but that does not limit you in which kind of weapon/armor/skills you can have, the story of the game (although it's not finished) is intriguing and interesting, and last but not least the visuals, the game uses the "Cryengine" (as the name suggests, the same one as crysys), which gives Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem the best ARPG graphics I've ever seen (at least until Diablo IV is out). This game is still a mess. It is not optimized and runs like garbage. Furthermore, servers are unstable and devs got nothing but excuses (apparently, it is our fault that we want to play the game). Skills are not balanced and the game in general is full of bugs.

Avoid. But in a year when it's $15 and has more content.

When we finished playing, my own progress was gone and I am stuck with low level at the point that my friend finished. There are many cases like this.
Interface is so bare-bones that it hurts, no quality of life solutions, everything in this game screams that it is unfinished, rushed and that the devs stopped caring and just poorly copy-pasted ideas form other, similar games. This game is so frustrating to play that me and my friends have uninstalled and hidden this game in our libraries.
This is well below average and took care to note the names of the developers so I don't buy anything from them in the future.
Don't bother with this title. Get Grim Dawn or POE, which are much worth Your time.
People who give this title 10/10 or something more than 5/10 must be so used to getting screwed by the developers that they don't even notice anymore. Stop paying for unfinished garbage like this game!

Full of bugs, graphics not as good as it could be for cry engine, the storyline is horrible. I played the betas and i am hugly disappointed by this game. It has been released way too early. The story isnt even finished, that release is a work-in-progress.

The game also suffers from logic errors in the storyline, i were asking myself a lot of times "why are you doing this, it is so obvious that ...". And this took the devs 4 years.

But, the game it is now wasnt developed 4 years, two maybe, but definitly not four. The game had some transitions in its past. First from open world to more linear levels and then, there is the skill-system, which had a bunch of iterations and with each it got closer and closer to diablo 3. The reason i wanted the game back in the days was, that it is NOT diablo 3. Now i have a mix of diablo 3 and path of exile and not even a good one.
The reason for that, they tried to be as flexible as a path of exile, the downside is, they werent able to proper balance it. People do have problems with certain bosses, because of their builds. The user have no feedback, if their chosen build is any good or not. There are also the skills, the whole skill-system feels like being stoped after 80% is done. There are some details that would greatly improve the gameplay. For example seeing the level of the skills without clicking on each and every one of them, or if you choose the "+10% average damage" modifier, it realy is being increased by 10% and not just two like in my case, because they do some fancy math there, which the user cant see. Also provide more information, if something increases the helth of a summon... how much is the increase ? There are a bunch of modifiers, that have no real explanation what are the changes in numbers, not even after you have chosen them, you cant see it.

All things considered, i had high hopes, got hughly disappointed and the game is far behind of what it could have been.
They need to fix all those bugs, the plot stoppers where you have to restart the game in order to go on, fix the plot holes where its just not logical, finish he work done on the skills and the passive tree.

Another year would have been a good idea, this release was way to early and now we are all beta testers.

On the negative side - holy cow what an absolute dumpster fire this game turned out to be at launch. I will rewrite my review in the future if things change. This game was RUSHED out of beta with what was clearly ZERO testing internally outside of the beta tested items.

The game is OOZING bugs. There are bugs that cause your stash items to disappear, your dyes and transmogs to disapear, bugs that were known in beta that let people dupe items and gold (that the devs have now threatened to ban for), half the passive tree literally doesn't work, ailments are broken (besides rend), there are nodes on the passive tree that give 100x the bonus they are supposed to, the server was down for literally 2 days after less than a day at launch, monsters dont spawn in act 3 half the time and if they do they just stand still, side zones requiring you to kill monsters but not enough spawn to get the rewards, spells do not scale into endgame at all, the game feels clunky, input commands aren't registered, potions do not get used half the time you try and use them, the game wont let you rearrange your items sometimes, it takes several clicks to sell an item sometimes, the stat screen gets completely bugged out sometimes, the list is JUST TOO long.

Do not buy this dumpster fire AT LEAST until the devs have done their job and release an actual playable release version.

However, once you get to the late game you quickly begin to realize that many of the underlying systems are heavily flawed at their cores. This includes itemization, power and speed scaling, the hour by hour gameplay loop, level design, and so on and so forth.

In the end Wolcen just doesn't compare to the established ARPG titles and would require a fundamental overhaul if it was to compete with the PoE and Diablo franchises. With all the bugs, exploits, inconsistent terminology and unfinished online-play, it feels like Wolcen in its current state is at best a very mediocre ARPG that should still be in alpha.

x)Skills dont buffer or cue up, making the gameplay very clucky, this means you have to spam the same skills alot of times for them to work, since if ur in another animation the action input doesent register, this makes combos and the general flow of battle super clunky and slow (same goes for potions)
    x) ALOT of tooltip errors, missing info in skills, hard to understand what exactly does what
    x) cant open inventory when rewieving the mega big quest reward screen, so its hard to choose what reward to take since u cant compare to what you already have

this is just to name a few on the top of my head.

Also the transform skill, aspect thing, is super lame, it does almost no damage and seems to have no purpose, its just a flashy transformation, should be completly removed imo if not removed atleast up its damage and make it with only 1-2 active skills, its to much with 6 skills with the clunky combat system.

*Basically, I paid for a game I couldn't play for the first 48 hours after launch.

I never understand this. Even companies like Blizzard have problems with launches, so I suppose an Indie company with a small group of devs would, too, though this makes no sense. I guess it's a question of how much money they want to spend on infrastructure coupled with the prediction of the initial player base.

*There are multiple major and minor bugs in this game.

This one I can't really forgive. When I spend my hard-earned money on a game, I expect the basic premise that they advertise/claim to work and perform accordingly. I have no interest in purchasing a game that doesn't work from the onset, or that requires multiple patches to even get it to the starting line. This is simply false advertisement. For a game that's been in development since 2015 (i.e. 4+ years), I would expect ALL of the major bugs to be fixed come launch day. The price was also increased a week or so before launch, from $30 to $40. That's a stiff price for a game that doesn't function at 100%.

*But the studio developing it is small, only 13 or so devs.

Consider that Condor (Blizzard North) made Diablo in about a year with a staff of around 10 people, facing bankruptcy and *luckily* were acquired in a deal with Blizzard. They had no kickstarter, and received a woefully small budget of $300k to make Diablo, but yet managed to put out a product that WORKED from day one. So no, this excuse doesn't hold much water.

Buyer beware. Steam (Valve Corporation) is very resistant to giving refunds due to their 2 hour playtime policy. Even though there were launch issues, I stuck with Wolcen since the story and gameplay were pretty good, even through all the bugs (b/c I really did want to like this game) and then ran headlong into Act 3 and it's bugged encounter leading to a halt in progression.

Also consider that there are multiple negative reports on the Better Business Bureau's website for Valve, and their shady business practices for which they've never replied (did not expect this). You can see that here: https://www.bbb.org/us/wa/bellevue/profile/online-gaming/valve-corporation-1296-27030704/details#all-alerts

If you've played any ARPG since the genre first grew to it's zenith, odds are you've played a game that's eerily similar. Perhaps better, perhaps not. This game had a terrible launch and is basically unfinished, lack polish in almost every aspect and feels very clunky to play. On the other hand it looks great, have interesting story, some amazing set pieces, ok characters and generally has it's moments. It's not a total disaster, but I would probably recommend it once they actually finish it in a year or so.

How anyone could give a rating of 10 to a game they couldn't have played more than a couple of hours is disingenuous or dubious. If the game was flawless and was terrific ok.
The company posted that their server(s) were being overwhelmed and thus the down times but that doesn't ring true to me. Any company would know that they would get hit with high traffic upon launch and if they were diligent and professional they would be prepared. Especially since this excuse has been used countless times in the past. It feels like they aren't being entirely truthful.
Now I'm willing to accept that there may be some unforseen bugs that need to be worked out. Little things here and there that they diligently work to resolve. But until they are resolved no game is a 10/10. Not being able to log on for virtually 2 days is not a little bug. It's a massive turd.

The low score is attributed to a disastrous full release launch, with very large periods of downtime and service "maintenance" coupled with server instability which is unacceptable for a fully released title, you pay your fee, you expect to be able to use the product. No studio or company, irrespective of the size and scale gets a pass on this.

I have now gotten to end-content and my first worries has come, I don't see there being much to do in the end game. To be honest, Diablo 3 is such a perfect game in the sense for the type of game it is that it's close to impossible to compete with it. You can throw a thousand hours at it and there are still things to do. The best comparison I can give is Greedfall and Dragon Age Inquisition. - Bugs in online play like money, item duplication, Magic Find stacking...
    - Unfinished and buggy animations
    - Tool tips with tons of English errors also not providing any information on what it does
    - Tons of passive nodes and skill do not work, others a way over tuned. You can have 100% damage mitigation (Be invulnerable) and some passives scale up your damage 100x than the others because of a programmer typo (Wrote 50 instead of 0,5). No plans to fix it, everyone is abusing it. Only 1 or 2 builds can actually do the endgame
    - Online stash keep missing. They had to rollback the servers (3 days without servers right after launch) but the bug is still happening
    - Endgame progression getting reset sometimes
    - Hitboxes for some mobs are really bugged

The story is dull, predictable, and unfinished. The story quite literally ends mid-scene, with no actual resolution to the plot, and you "wake up" at the endgame.

I'd be utterly shocked if there were a dozen tile sets for the endgame map generator. Endgame "expeditions" are nothing more that walking the same layout of the same five tile sets killing the same 6 monsters. The "town expansion" is an utter joke, and literally nothing more than a list of "rewards" to pick from for running those repetitive expeditions.

Skills are bland, animations are boring. The passive tree has almost no information, and what little there is has no explanations. The whole system is so unbalanced. There were one or two good skills for endgame, but those were all quickly nerfed into uselessness. As I read through the patch notes, it's nerf after nerf for the skills that actually work well, and no improvements to anything else.

Controls are terrible. You're stuck with a crap keyboard layout, and no way to remap keys. The lag is horrible. I've lost count of the number of times I've died while smashing the Q key, because the animation for the spell I tried to cast 3s ago finally decided to start.

After 40 hours of trying, the nerf to the one usefull engame skill did it for me. This game is uninstalled, and I'm trying to get a refund from Steam as I purchased this expecting a complete game upon release. Don't think I'm going to get it, but I'm going to try.

Then there is the poor decision making by the devs. I was playing fine this morning, then they announced a hotfix being applied. Apparently this was to fix some minor crashing issues.

Well this hotfix broke a lot of peoples' stash, totally wiped them, and caused some character data to be rolled back/lost.

So they then took the servers down, on the second day of release, to investigate why they're not-really-super-necessary minor hotfix broke everything.

Offline play is available, but pointless as characters are stored locally, so no progress can be transferred to online play. So if you don't have any friends, or weren't planning on grouping with strangers, then sure, you can play. Otherwise, game is quite LITERALLY unplayable.

The offline mode is playable however the characters in offline mode are separate from online mode characters which are the one you want to play with multiplayer and are not interchangable. From what I've seen (in act 2 presently) of the gameplay and the leveling/gear systems the game has to offer, it does promise to be of better value than it's presently rendering. However, until they resolve some of the issues the game is in a frustrating place for users. Particularly not being able to log online.
It's because of this and not enough experience with the game yet that I give a score of 2/10 and not a 7-9/10. Although I think it may be capable of a 7-9/10.

The description on talents and skills are atrocious for example 3 talents each give 20%+ force field,
so you would assume you either get force field x 1.6 or you get force field x 1.2 x 1.2 x1.2,
wrong you someone how out at force field x 1,42, i Have yet to figure out the math fail behind that.
A lot of other skills and talents have descriptions that leave you to wonder about the actually math behind them.

And not related to the gameplay:
they screwed up beyond reason .... 7 years of development, open alpha, open beta, delay their release in the last minute for 2 weeks, release happens and the servers die for 2 days with no solution or fix in sight. Not to mention the single player has almost all the bugs that were fixed in the beta version. I believe the game will be working in time, but taking 7 years of work with open alpha and beta, only to release it in this state is a hard flaw to overcome.

It would be better if this title stood in early access to become what it could. Right now it's only a shadow of what it could have been. Quite annoying shadow.

Worth revisiting in sometime if devs won't drop the ball like they're doing right now. But right now it's best to stay away.

    - bugged skills
    - bugged talents
    - bugged hitboxes
    - infinite money bug so simple a 5 year old child could do it
    - stashs and items disappearing
    - campaign progression changes when you enter another person online game, so if you're on Act 1 and join an Act 3 friend, your personal progress jumps to Act 3
    - devs went silent with really really really small updates, that often break more things than fix
    - bugged everything basically, there is not a single thing in the game that doesn't have a bug

Ok, it is bugged, now lets talk about the game itself:
    - very few skills
    - spellcaster is null, only uses staffs but it sucks
    - endgame even more repetitive than D3, and less fun to repeat
    - loot is bad, uniques and legendary doesn't really mean anything
    - story is OK
    - fashion is GREAT, really, it is more an armor design program than an ARPG, you can do a lot with the transmog system, this is the ONLY great thing about this game
    - 99% of really powerfull endgame is based on a single skill, bleeding edge
    - there are 2 or 3 talents that is mandatory for everyone to dps properly, so build diversity is really bad, we don't know if its a bug or its just bad talent design
    - offline is really just to try anything you want, it is completely modifiable by a single .txt edit, so its good that you cant bring offline char to online
    - descriptions like +10% damage works like **** since most of the damage is calculated weirdly, there are a lot of discussion about cumulative and additive and multiplicative, I dont really understand, but I know that if it says +100% damage to skill X, skill X damage will actuallly jump from 1000 to 1010.

    Final thoughts:
This is clearly an "we are out of money, and we **** up, let's release so we don't bankrupt", it is sad since it had a clear audience, a clear opportunity, but they really **** up.
I think it is Anthem level of incopetence and launch.

I really don't care about the server issues, all games at launch have those problems, I mean Blizzard have been releasing games and expansions for over a decade and they still can't get it right.

This is more about the sheer number of bugs and issues that should have been fixed over the 4 year early access period. It honestly feels like that game has only just started it's early access phase. Most recently the newest patch they just put in, deleted all my unique items from my stash, so kinda put a damper on my enthusiasm for the game. I hope they can fix all the issues, because I think they need to go back into an early access, even beta state, before releasing the game like it is t the moment.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR - Being a Kickstarter does it mean we are to look forward to a horrendously stupid amount of bugs and crashes?
This is a question we should put forward to devs before supporting a newbie Kickstarter Games in the future.

(Re Edit - Dropped score to 2 from an initial 4 currently on final mission, almost everything in this game is unbalanced and feels surprisingly untested. Just because your game looks good does not mean we need to excuse 90% of the game being an unbalanced crapfest.... Clearly and Pointlessly Quantity over Quality was concentrated on which is a horrible decision in any game.
Instead of cramming in so much dev time in a massive amount of abilities and passives they should have spent time streamlining the game instead. Most of us would have been happier with less than half of the passives and abilities per class with a stable, streamlined experience.
Because In-game the passives are not enhancing my experience at all in the face of unresponsive controls, delay inputs, movement issues and abilities not working the way they should.
For Example Flesh Golem - This ability is needed for casters but half the time the golem is tanking a single enemy away from you while 10 others are chasing you all over, regardless of using the Taunt.)

RE-RE Edit - WTF Ending was that??? OMG I feel like dropping the score to zero. The devs were clearly under the impression that they were making an experience equivalent to the The Second coming of Christ. Such a fcking disaster especially since the gameplay has promise but every decision around it which should have been to give a good experience was replaced by the exact opposite. The least they could do was give some kind of ending to the damn experience, it would not be that hard to continue the story in DLC after giving the current story some closure.
    Fcking Heartbreaking.

I can't recommend it, the game seems incomplete. They promised 5 acts but they only released 3. One day from release and I still can't connect to the game servers, having to play it offline, this is a general problem the community is having without any prevision of fixing it. This wouldn't be such a big problem if I had ways to transfer my offline char to the online later, but you can't do it and me and the ones playing offline at the moment will have to start again once they fix their servers.

Even tho caster and melee combat is very dynamic, pets/minions are dumb and die in every encounter.
The ammount of skills that you can equip is very limiting (only 5 keyboard and 2 mouse buttons). If I could I would post pictures comparing it to other arpgs. You can't even equip an aura, activate it and them unequip to free up space for another skill, since it will be deactivated instantly.

Lore and story are lacking, there are no lore notes/audio. The game is too linear, there aren't any side quests and the char talks by himself in dialogs, leaving no place for immersion or connection to the npcs; this brings the question: What is the point of creating and customizing character appearance in the char creation menu since he has its own voice and personality, and even if you create an old warlock/wizard, he will still sound like a cynical and sarcastic young man?

More funding was available, they had more resources, and there were advances in graphical/gameplay technology. In comparison, the new version of this game is infinitely better. Of course this had it's lasting effects on players, as their opinions were quite harsh towards the company because of the scrapping of the original game concept. Players still like to hold that against the game, to create the negative reviews/comments that they do... But the game, as it is currently (Once the server issues are fixes due to the large number of players that the SMALL company did not expect) is rather amazing. It's next gen graphical advantage puts it above other ARPG's, and it's ability to offer hybrid playstyles far out does any other game in the genre. It needs some love around the edges, but it is still in a new, large competitor for the titans in the genre.

The long and short of it is.. It started out rocky, there were some questionable decisions made... But those decisions really paid off to make a great game, regardless of the people using the long development time/project scrap to make unfair reviews.

The servers are a mess. I have been spamming offline pretty hard and am currently doing expeditions in the 80-85 level range. However, the rewards are terrible and level 40 gear is dropping in level 85 zones.

I am already feeling slightly bored if being honest. When spamming expeditions it is the same 2-4 tile sets and same 2-4 mob types over and over and over again. This repetitive scenery will not lend itself well to longevity.

DO NOT BELIEVE HIGH SCORE REVIEWS!

This game literally feels like early alpha build - and I'm completely ignoring the server fiasco on launch weeked - because bad stuff occasionally happens.

The problem is, this is untested buggy and unbalanced mess of a game and I'm assuring you - NOBODY TESTED ANYTHING!

Many of the keystone passive on the tree do not work at all, some build archetypes do not scale into end-game at all, notably ALL SPELLS. Yes, spells are not viable for endgame at all no matter how you build them, because you'll be doing like 1/20th of the damage that certain melee or pistol builds can do.

There are literally two build scaling methods that actually scale into endgame, so unless you are using very specific mechanics in your build - your build will 100% suck.

I strongly recommend waiting couple of months till (perhaps) they fix it, or you'll be pulling your hair out of your head from things not working, not scaling, bugs and other problems. IT IS NOT A FINISHED PRODUCT, not even close.

This game has potential and it has some fun ideas, but everything that comes down to mechanics and numbers behind it is one big pile of utter untested garbage. STAY AWAY FROM IT FOR NOW!

I'm giving 3 points purely for cool ideas they had for it, otherwise it would be straight up 0/10. I played nearly every single diablo-like aRPG: Diablo 1, 2, 3, Torchlight 1, 2, Sacred 1, 2, all Van Helsing games, Path of Exile - and this one is singlehandedly the most unbalanced game with broken and not functioning mechanics I've experienced in any game of this genre in 20+ years, by miles.

And looking at how their early access went, with whole honesty I very much doubt they are competent and willing enough to ever fix it. It honestly seems like complete blatant cash grab - they'll pretend patching the game for few weeks while there are still some sales going, then they'll just wash of their hands and abandon it - because that's what dirty devs do. I'm not 100% sures, but they did everything in their power to make such impression.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

tl;dr Broken, buggy and unbalanced mess - 3/10 just for few cool ideas - AVOID unless they fix it.

PS: you can check my other reviews - this is not some throwaway account to brigade on a game!!!
