This is sincerely one of the best games I've ever played. What this team gets and is so often missed by other developers is that in a story driven game, you should tell it in a way that only a game can. The mechanics of storytelling in What Remains of Edith Finch are the new bar set that all future developers should strive to achieve.

This story hit me and remembered me to a sad story of my life. Another thing about the story: there are many creative ideas to tell you stories about how the family member died.
The graphic looks brilliantly, it uses the Unreal 4 engine.
This game is a great experience and you just need 2-3 hours for that, so I can surely recommend to invest so few hours of your life for this experiment.

This game truly deserves to be GOTY at least for PC, as its story, its style, its soundtrack (one of the most beautiful I've ever listened to) are something incomparable to what other games have. A beautiful game in every sense of the word. The story, voice work, gameplay and visuals were all done so expertly, I can't fault any aspect of this game. It made me feel every emotion possible from laugh out loud happiness to complete sadness, this was a truly wonderful experience that I can't recommend highly enough.

There are times when games can be called experiences and this is one of them. What Remains of Edith Finch has one of the best stories of recent memory for me as well as one of the best imagined worlds I have every seen. At it’s core this is a walking simulator where you explore a house to find out the history of various family members. That doesn’t do this game justice though. Each family member has it’s own type of game to it when you are experiencing their final moments. For instance for Barbara you are literally in the comic book you are reading and watch things unfold on the page. For Lewis you are working at a canning plant and have to keep up with chopping fish as you explore his invented world he is getting lost in. There are others I could mention but will stop there to just say that the variety and inventiveness of the flashbacks blew me away. This is what walking sims can be and should strive to be. The game doesn’t point you where to go next but at the same time makes it apparent. The graphics were well done and made good use of colour. The detail on plants; objects; and water were great. The voice acting was superb throughout as was the music.

I played What Remains of Edith Finch on Linux using Wine. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs or glitches. There was a v-sync toggle; four AA settings; and six other graphics options. Alt-Tab didn’t work. The game saves automatically at various points. A manual save system would have been nice but the spacing between auto saves wasn’t terrible. Performance was overall very good. There were some drops in frame rate but they only lasted a second or two and otherwise was well above 60. The game does seem to have a frame rate cap of 120 FPS but that is better than some games using the Unreal engine that have a cap of 60.

    Game Engine: Unreal 4
    Graphics API: DXVK
    Disk Space Used: 2.5 GB

Graphics Settings Used: V-sync off; all other settings on Ultra; 1920x1080
    GPU Usage: 4-100 %
    VRAM Usage: 1326-2183 MB
    CPU Usage: 11-29 %
    RAM Usage: 2.1-2.5 GB
    Frame Rate: 32-120 FPS

I can easily say that What Remains of Edith Finch was amazing. It is storytelling at it’s finest and has a sense of wonder other games sorely lack. If you at all enjoy walking sims I urge you to check this game out. I paid $7.69 CAD for it but it is easily worth it’s current price tag of $25.59 CAD. I finished the game in 1 hour and 54 minutes but it makes every minute of that count. This shows that having a long play time isn’t needed to be a great game.

Beautiful story told through a game with some very interesting and unique twists and experimentation with narrative perspectives, perceptions etc... so far a very strong game of the year contender because it's been a long time since I got this invested into a game. It really is brilliant.

The graphics, the music, the environmental storytelling, the design of the rooms and furniture.

The graphics, the music, the environmental storytelling, the design of the rooms and furniture. Everything has a place and time. Think Gone Home but with significantly more gripping premise, better storytelling and a more interesting house layout overall. There is a lot to explore and the game manages to create a lot of atmosphere around the local legend of "curse" that plagues the family throughout times. I dont want to spoil so I wont say more than that.

The way the story is told through the eyes of the characters relative to their subjective experience and perception and even with corresponding gameplay mechanics is unlike much I've seen in gaming so far, not completely revolutionary either, but still a very refreshing take. It makes the story surprisingly personal and I grew attached to all the characters almost obliviously.

All in all an amazing game that will make you think, feel and maybe even question some things...

I gave it a ten because games that try to portray stories like this are scarce, and I want to support the production of such titles. This is a very personal game that stays with you after you finish it. It's pretty much a masterpiece of storytelling in my book already

It's a "walking simulator" game but, not a simple one, it is a very original one. Amazing game, emotional, mysterious, interactive, really good atmosphere and the way in which the stories are narrated is very original, each one with it owns way of showing it to the player. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Giant Sparrow.

Leisurely exploration of the estate is interspersed with stories about the last days of different Finch family members – and these moments show that developers didn’t just proclaim their love for H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and other masters of magical realism, they really know that stuff. Giant Sparrow draws you into the little girl’s dreamworld just as easily as it paints a picture of kingly ambitions of a factory worker. [Issue#221, p.81]
