Very Nice thing to Play. Storyline is just perfect, a little bit sad, but very moving! The First impression was so genuine! I have never felt horrified while playing, despite the fact that you play alone with nobody alive around, only past, that is tragic and unhappy!

This game takes you on an unrealistic and confusing journey that engages you through little "mini-games" placed at the exact right moments and just enough suspense in the building story that you're able to forgive the game its intolerable walking speed and the unnecessary internal monologues of the main-character (the main character is a very pretentious and self-sanctimonious).

If you can find this game on sale for less than $10 and you enjoy walking simulators, I think you'll probably enjoy this title - but don't expect fireworks.

Told through vignettes and recollections of each of the Finch family, the game continually takes stylistic detours, and introduces these unique "mini-games", weaving them together with it's storytelling flawlessly to make each scene more impactful and personal, while keeping the game fresh and not monotonous. Lasting about 2-3 hours in length, the game finishes on a satisfying but melancholy note. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was presented to me as a game, but it isn't. It's a story driven "walk-through".

Basically you explore an eerie yet beautiful house and when you click on one or the other object, a part of the story is told by the protagonist, a young pregnant woman. You begin with the bottom of the family tree and move up - so to speak - discovering how each family member came to die untimely.

To keep you awake, occasionally you have to open a door, lock or window yourself by moving the mouse in some direction. Or you control an animal for a moment. It's all at rudimentary level and not intended to challenge you. Again, it's only to keep your attention.

To explore everything, the "game" takes about two hours. And that's it. Suddenly it's over, and you're left with a nice story, but haven't played a game or anything, because there is no game to play.

For two hours (or three if you're slower) of story telling, this "book" is kinda expensive. I don't know exactly what to think of it. But I'm left unfulfilled, hence the lower score.

Graphics is nice though. No glitches or anything. A huge negative is the bratty way the young lady communicates. You have to listen to her voice for the next two hours or so. Another negative is the open end more or less. The unlikely weird deaths by the family members aren't explained, although everybody claims it because they read upon the family history. So suspicions of their ill fate (untimely deaths of all family members) is based on superstition.

But nothing conclusive will be presented. This family is simply dying because that's the story. Meh.
A good thing I have to say is that the story doesn't try to push some liberal agenda such as "Gone Home", which pushes the gay agenda. Edith Finch is an original mystery story (without answers).

All in all this "game" is a walking simulator/spoken story book with decent graphics. It's not a game - just to make sure. It lasts for 2 hours. If that's worth your $12 or so then go for it.

The game introduces entirely new mechanics and ways to tell the story every couple of minutes. It's only 3 hours long, but it's very refreshing. It may not be the best story ever told in video games, but it's not about the story itself, it's about how this story is being presented to the viewer.

This story hit me and remembered me to a sad story of my life. Another thing about the story: there are many creative ideas to tell you stories about how the family member died.
The graphic looks brilliantly, it uses the Unreal 4 engine.
This game is a great experience and you just need 2-3 hours for that, so I can surely recommend to invest so few hours of your life for this experiment.

This is a perfect example of a game that is primarily exploration/story-based that allows for enough creative interactivity to keep the story going. If more so-called "walking simulators" took notes from What Remains of Edith Finch, the genre would be better-viewed on the whole.

This was an incredible experience during the short time that it lasted, but left a somewhat empty after-taste after all is said and done.
Coming into this game, I was immediately drawn in with the amazing graphics. Then I became frustrated with the slow walking, and how unnecessary the woods section under the house was. There was literally nothing there to find, which was a shame.

Coming into this game, I was immediately drawn in with the amazing graphics. Then I became frustrated with the slow walking, and how unnecessary the woods section under the house was. There was literally nothing there to find, which was a shame.
Finally entering the house I was amazed again, and felt genuinely creeped out by the atmosphere. I saw doors sealed off as if to contain some evil inside. I saw this mix of books - spiritual books, cooking books, the freaking Necronomicon (!) - and my mind concocted imagery of the terrors awaiting me as I was to continue exploring this house of doom. I saw from the family tree on the main menu that none of the people of the Finch family had lived very long, and was saddened but eager to find our their morbid tales.
Oh boy, are the developers of this nasty tale a morbid bunch!
Why did they leave the house so hastily? Was the old woman a witch that had to sacrifice her children and grand-children to some Ancient God she had made a pact with? Was there occult cannibalism involved? Had some sinister demon been conjured which frightened off the family?
Unfortunately none of my initial anticipations were met.
What the story does - and quite well - is retell the morbid endings of these people, and you have to give it to the creators that the house imagery is consistent as far as what you discover goes. The retellings of the demise of the family members are brilliantly executed, using clever means of story-telling to deliver them. It must have taken a lot of work, because they really push the 3D-engine to its limits by making each mini-story unique in presentation.
So while the game is a thrill to play through, it ultimately leaves a dry empty feeling inside, because nothing is actually revealed in regards to the origins of the "Curse", nor is there any connecting thread that makes sense as to why these individuals actually meet such sad fates. It is as if the creators couldn't make sense of their own story, and the deadline was approaching so they just skipped it altogether. I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but to be honest there are none to be found within the game itself either. The game literally reeks of references to some hidden evil that was committed with supernatural forces, but the game chooses to just skip all of that in any conclusive final way.
The Necronomicon on the bookshelf! The creepy history of the family. I was SO disappointed that it all ran out in the sand, and skipped the whole idea of a climactic ending altogether. It is as if the developers grew tired of their own creation towards the end, and just decided to get the game delivered asap. There is a point in the game where one of the characters approach the old mansion during a low tide, and then it just stops there, but you get the feeling that there was supposed to be a section where it is explored, and all is revealed, but it is skipped in the most silly way.
If the game had actually dared to find a resolve bringing all the pieces together in the end, it would have been one of the best interactive story games I have ever played. It doesn't though, so that place still goes to Soma.

The "game" itself is absolutely terrible in any aspect : design of the location is vapid, characters (there is literaly none of them, you "play" as an invisible dot floating around 1.6 meters above the surface, sometimes pretending to be a human by making noises), story itself and storytelling are made only to play on feelings of 14yo edgy unstable kids, gameplay is just walking from point A to B. You absolutely can't affect anything by interacting with it, just dull repeatable "press E to watch a something about another mentally ill person" ("win" is definetely not a fitting word here as it is not a game).
On top of all that, it runs poorly on PC which can run any 2019 game on high / medium-high settings with smooth framerate, while its visual is somewhere around early 7th gen console game.
The worst game I've ever played in my entire life, far worse then **** like Heavy rain, Until dawn, Atlas or even Fallout 76. Do not waste your time on this.

The graphics, the music, the environmental storytelling, the design of the rooms and furniture. Everything has a place and time. Think Gone Home but with significantly more gripping premise, better storytelling and a more interesting house layout overall. There is a lot to explore and the game manages to create a lot of atmosphere around the local legend of "curse" that plagues the family throughout times. I dont want to spoil so I wont say more than that.

The way the story is told through the eyes of the characters relative to their subjective experience and perception and even with corresponding gameplay mechanics is unlike much I've seen in gaming so far, not completely revolutionary either, but still a very refreshing take. It makes the story surprisingly personal and I grew attached to all the characters almost obliviously.

All in all an amazing game that will make you think, feel and maybe even question some things...

I gave it a ten because games that try to portray stories like this are scarce, and I want to support the production of such titles. This is a very personal game that stays with you after you finish it. It's pretty much a masterpiece of storytelling in my book already

Outside of that I can't really say there's much more to this story game. There was no gameplay to speak of; no puzzle elements, navigation, or problem solving of any kind. Just press forward to advance through the house.

The story, the main aspect, was... kinda boring. There were about 3-4 family members whose deaths still remained a complete mystery and you're left guessing at how they died. Most of them died in pretty mundane ways too; no one died doing anything heoric, strange, or interesting. Each family member lived pretty mundane lives that most anyone could have lived. Nothing wacky or stimulating. I mean, yeah, their family is a bit DIY-ish and ambitious (painter, house builder, artist, child actor, etc), but no one achieved any greatness or did anything significant other than dieing clumsily.

Each family member's story is told very briefly from either their eyes or some artistic recreation, which was cool, but again, brief. Their stories didn't link up too significantly and you didn't get too much of a picture of their full life with the family who clearly is very close with one another.

There was one part of the story where I became genuinely interested in what was going to happen next (the one concerning Edie and the old house), and then, bam, that story ends, ok on to the next...

The end was a bit touching, the rest was a snoozefest.

The story suffers from trying to do too much in small bursts. You spend mere minutes learning about each characters death, which is entirely underwhelming because you know absolutely nothing about the character (or very very little) to begin with, and most of the deaths are just silly. A lot of the character's actions don't make a lick of sense either. I feel like there was supposed to be a slight twist towards the end of the game, which I "spoiled" for myself in the first few minutes of play just by looking down. I played through the entire game in one sitting, under two hours, and games like this, walking simulators, often have little to no replay-ability; definitely not worth the price of admission. Expand

Because this could be one of those rare experiences which you sit through in one turn. Whether you're very much into interactive storytelling or not, it'll be very hard to not appreciate this little masterpiece. And I say little because, yes, it's short. Even if you want to unravel every little secret which the game has to offer. Still it won't take you more than you'd need to even get past the tutorial of some titles.
But oh what a little trip it is. The storytelling is magnificent. The atmosphere is truly majestic. Mysteries lay hidden around you waiting to be unravelled. And the way the story makes you trace every corner of the house and it's surroundings is truly incredible, mysterious and gripping. You care for what happened to the family and it manages to make you bond with anyone involved in the sad, but at the same time somehow enlightening, trip down the house's mysterious past. In terms of graphics does the game not only look beautiful, but the way it presents every aspect of the family's past is often extremely creative and original. There have been several titles which provide the same kind of style and atmosphere. Take "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter", "Dear Esther", "Everybody's gone to the rapture" and most similarly "Gone Home". All of them made a similar impression on me. Making me think and wonder about the mysteries I witnessed. But none of the above stood as tall as "What Remains of Edith Finch". Tall in mystery. Tall in emotion. Tall in beauty. But mainly tall in storytelling. A title which manages to switch your emotions up and down almost constantly. Mixing sadness and joy into a satisfying yet eerie blend. A level of interactive storytelling which hasn't been reached before in this genre in my opinion and therefore sets the bar very high for upcoming titles of it's kind.

Extremely overrated ... what's good is that it's short. The "game" tries to tell a story, but I find it relatively bland and it feels unfinished in the end. "Game", yeah it's not really a game ... you move along a narrow path as the story is being told ... as interactive as turning pages in a book.

Wow. What an utter bore. #1: this is not a video game. This is a *barely* interactive storybook, with slow moving, janky controls, a languid movement speed whose only purpose is to drag out the sparse content to make it feel longer. The story is lackluster, unrelatable, and ultimately pointless with no buildup, climax, or payoff whatsoever.

If this had been a show or movie, I wouldn't have even bothered watching it in the background while i was playing a real game. I kept playing hoping there would be some point or that it would improve as I got deeper into it as the reviews seem so high. The only blessing therefore was that it was quite short.

This is sincerely one of the best games I've ever played. What this team gets and is so often missed by other developers is that in a story driven game, you should tell it in a way that only a game can. The mechanics of storytelling in What Remains of Edith Finch are the new bar set that all future developers should strive to achieve.

The story is unconvincing. Some characters feel very artificial along with the events covering their past.

Also, there is a 17 year old girl who is pregnant and moving around a death trap house. No info on who impregnated this child or why the storytelling involves unfitting random immoral stuff that are put in just to raise attention of retarded teenagers and rake off the money. 2

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Giant Sparrow.

As a story, the main theme was basically "yolo". The story didn't challenge my worldview or cause me to think about new things. I didn't find it particularly emotional. I didn't really care about any of the characters and their deaths seemed rather meaningless.

Several beautifully-rendered, acted, and told vignettes about strange deaths in a family with a surreal, fantasy style. The storytelling and technical execution of the game are outstanding. However, I rate this as only a 7 for two reasons:

    1) there simply is no gameplay. Halfway through the game, my girlfriend and I realized that we weren't actually "playing," but just walking and reading, so we switched to Youtube to watch a playthrough (only somewhat frustrating as the player didn't stop to examine the world as often as we would have liked...). There were no decisions to make, no way for the player to influence the story in any way. This was not really a game, but an immersive visual novel. Selling it and rating it as a game is problematic.

    2) The vignettes, while effective, evocative, and beautiful - were ultimately pointless. *SPOILERS* Why and how were the family cursed? What was the mechanism of "breaking" the curse and why did we believe the child would not also die pointlessly? While some of the deaths seemed meaningful - illustrating, perhaps, unhealthy lifestyles [canning factory, hiding in a bunker] - most of the deaths were more style than substance, and ultimately pointless (albeit visually "fun"). The fatal flaw of this story was that the author seemed to have thought of wonderful CONCEPTS for SCENES in a story, or story elements, but did not COMPLETE the story with a unifying message, theme, or plotline. The fatal flaw is that the story leaves you with a feeling of confusion, incompleteness, and frustration, rather than wonder, being intrigued, or thoughtfulness...

You play as the titular Edith Finch, who returns to her abandoned childhood home after the death of her mother. It is immediately obvious upon looking at the house that her family was a bit eccentric, but once you get inside and start seeing the glued-shut doors, it’s obvious that there was something seriously wrong with the Finch family.

As a walking simulator, this is really more of a story that you interact with by moving around and looking at items in the environment than a game per se; there’s no challenge to be had here, and virtually nothing in the way of meaningful choices to be made. The closest point of comparison is probably Gone Home – a young woman goes home to an empty house in the Pacific Northwest and over the course of the game you learn about the family drama that had unfolded there.

However, I feel that this work is a major improvement on the typical walking simulator formula.

What Remains of Edith Finch features shifting perspectives and art styles which serves to break up the gameplay and give it much more of a sense of variety. As you make your way through the game, you view the final moments of each member of the Finch family in turn, learning about their tragic and often self-inflicted history of bad stuff happening. These sequences are very creative, and vary considerably, ranging from a cel-shaded playthrough of a comic about a character’s death, to someone taking tragic family photos, to more abstract, fanciful scenes which imply how a character died.

Even outside of the memories, this game oozes with character. The eccentricity of the family – along with one character’s tendency to make dead people’s bedrooms into makeshift memorials – allows the game makers the excuse to make a variety of distinctive rooms, each reflecting the character of an individual, well, character. The family’s eclectic, schmaltzy, and kitschy tastes give us both insight into various characters’ personalities as well as interesting things to look at as we make our way through the game.

This game touched me emotionally, a rare feat in such works. That being said, I’m not sure if I can say that I actually enjoyed it; many of the events in the game were deliberately not only depressing, but also kind of pointless – the events just get progressively worse and more depressing as the game goes on. It’s just tragedy after tragedy, and while I’d be tempted to call it melodrama, the game does a pretty good job of selling it to the player – the pointlessness of it all is the point of the story, or as close to a point as Edith Finch has.

If I had a complaint about the “gameplay” interface itself, it would be the protagonist’s slow walking speed – while this is partially justified in the story, it is still a bit annoying in a few sections (particularly in the outdoor areas) where you walk around and it can take quite a while to get from point A to point B. The fact that I couldn’t turn off my controller’s rumbling via an in-game option (at least, not one that I found) was also an annoyance. Both of these issues were quite minor, though the latter did result in me switching over to using my controller halfway through to prevent it from rattling its way off my desk.

Overall, I think that this was one of the better examples of a serious walking simulator. The game’s overall presentation was on point, and it actually made me feel things. It didn’t belabor the point – the game overall is just a few hours long, and none of the individual sequences end up dragging on too long.

And yet I am not in love with this game, in part because it mostly seemed to be just trying to make me sad, but I didn’t really feel like it had much in the way of a meaningful message.

If you are interested in walking simulators, this is definitely one to check out. If you are looking for something with actual gameplay, this is not for you.

4.5/5 • The most impressive thing about WHAT REMAINS OF EDITH FINCH is the level of imagination and creativity that exists throughout the game. Also you get to play part of the game as a cat, and that can’t be a bad thing. Basically a set of short fables told through mini-games, WROEF tells the tale of a family beset by mystery and tragedy. It’s not easy to explain what’s involved when playing the game without introducing spoilers but suffice it to say the player is taken on a fascinating, surreal, and achingly wistful journey through the Finch family tree, experiencing each episode in a unique fashion, and through strange, shifting perspectives. Taken individually, each vignette is moving in its own way, and viewed as a whole it’s a mesmerizing exploration of loss and longing. Even though the events that take place are dreamlike and fantastical the team at Giant Sparrow have managed to imbue their game with such a vivid sense of melancholic wonder that I felt for each and every Finch, no matter how bizarre their personal story turned out to be. WROEF is a triumph of the imagination, and despite its understandably short running length, is a must for all gamers who enjoy being taken on a meaningful journey. Play this game.

Played a few years after it came out so I had forgotten everything about it and that was perfect.

Such a great story with a great game to tell it.

It's sad but very very good so don't go expecting to feel excited when you are done, but you will feel more at peace with the universe. So you got that going for you.

Blown away. There's a lot of good stuff to be said about the game. It presents its mysterious story in a very innovative and unique way with a great mix of varying gameplay, animation and music.

But there's that one special magical moment in the game. The part where you cut the fish... I don't want to include spoilers. You know what I'm talking about if you've played the game. That

There are times when games can be called experiences and this is one of them. What Remains of Edith Finch has one of the best stories of recent memory for me as well as one of the best imagined worlds I have every seen. At it’s core this is a walking simulator where you explore a house to find out the history of various family members. That doesn’t do this game justice though. Each family member has it’s own type of game to it when you are experiencing their final moments. For instance for Barbara you are literally in the comic book you are reading and watch things unfold on the page. For Lewis you are working at a canning plant and have to keep up with chopping fish as you explore his invented world he is getting lost in. There are others I could mention but will stop there to just say that the variety and inventiveness of the flashbacks blew me away. This is what walking sims can be and should strive to be. The game doesn’t point you where to go next but at the same time makes it apparent. The graphics were well done and made good use of colour. The detail on plants; objects; and water were great. The voice acting was superb throughout as was the music.

I played What Remains of Edith Finch on Linux using Wine. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any bugs or glitches. There was a v-sync toggle; four AA settings; and six other graphics options. Alt-Tab didn’t work. The game saves automatically at various points. A manual save system would have been nice but the spacing between auto saves wasn’t terrible. Performance was overall very good. There were some drops in frame rate but they only lasted a second or two and otherwise was well above 60. The game does seem to have a frame rate cap of 120 FPS but that is better than some games using the Unreal engine that have a cap of 60.

    Game Engine: Unreal 4
    Graphics API: DXVK
    Disk Space Used: 2.5 GB

Graphics Settings Used: V-sync off; all other settings on Ultra; 1920x1080
    GPU Usage: 4-100 %
    VRAM Usage: 1326-2183 MB
    CPU Usage: 11-29 %
    RAM Usage: 2.1-2.5 GB
    Frame Rate: 32-120 FPS

I can easily say that What Remains of Edith Finch was amazing. It is storytelling at it’s finest and has a sense of wonder other games sorely lack. If you at all enjoy walking sims I urge you to check this game out. I paid $7.69 CAD for it but it is easily worth it’s current price tag of $25.59 CAD. I finished the game in 1 hour and 54 minutes but it makes every minute of that count. This shows that having a long play time isn’t needed to be a great game.

Great and beautiful and easily worth playing instead of watching some the crap movie that Hollywood has to offer. The Team made the game with thoughtful heart. Good story and graphics. Cool ideas and voice acting. Unique and totally worth playing. I wish it was longer but I know you need a much bigger budget for a longer quality game like this.

Finally a "game" that fully exploits the narration! The player, or rather, the spectator, has nothing more than to move between one story and the other and enjoy it. Aesthetically interesting and very, very creative. The fact that a game virtually free from violence and the usual dysentery of action has been so successful, it is hoping.

You will play as Edith (in a first person view) during her exploration of the weird Finch family house, learning about the story of Finch unusual family members.
The interesting part of the game is that each story is narrated in a different way, based on some peculiar trait or behavior or skill possessed by that person.
Some stories are better and longer while others are just weird and last just few minutes.
To trow an example without spoilers imagine that Edith "uncle Bob" was a skilled glam rock guitarist.
The player will learn about Bob story while playing an interactive minigame based on music. During this minigame the game graphic (Backgrounds, fonts, point of view, but also ost) will change to resemble a 70's album cover.
Try it if you like unusual things and sad romantic stories...but beware that is barely a game...and the price of the game should be no more than the price of a dvd movie

A meditative walking simulator in the vein of Gone Home, What Remains of Edith Finch plays like an interactive storybook, full of captivating tales centered on the various ill-fated members of the Finch family. But for a game so focused on death, What Remains of Edith Finch is surprisingly full of life. It packs just as many uplifting and touching moments as it does sad ones.

Each story allows you to get to know the family member it focuses on just enough to miss them when you remember they're gone, and is told a way uniquely befitting the person—whether that be through the pages of a comic book or the lens of a vintage camera. Many of the stories employ some degree of magical realism, leaving the player—and Edith herself—to speculate as to how grounded in reality the tales might be.

The beautifully rendered rooms of the house provide just as many clues as to what kind of lives the Finches led as do the individual stories. Littered with small details like newspaper clippings, photographs, and plenty of books, the rooms of the labyrinthine Finch mansion feel lived-in, and the house's hidden passageways, branching structures, and other little quirks make it a delight to explore. The simple controls are intuitive and there are no tricky puzzles or other gameplay mechanics to interfere with story progression.

The whole thing only takes a few hours to complete, but its heart-wrenching conclusion will leave you thinking about What Remains of Edith Finch long after the credits roll.

It's a bad sign when fun is very much already in sparsity in your "gameplay" (it does show up occasionally in cute little ways, though), courtesy of your genre of choice, but when the tale your unravelling isn't the least bit interesting in your VISUAL STORY, you have some big problems.

While I personally did not enjoy it, I still would recommend What Remains of Edith Finch to certain people i know. It's sort of cute, easy to just jump into and beautiful to look at.

Leisurely exploration of the estate is interspersed with stories about the last days of different Finch family members – and these moments show that developers didn’t just proclaim their love for H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and other masters of magical realism, they really know that stuff. Giant Sparrow draws you into the little girl’s dreamworld just as easily as it paints a picture of kingly ambitions of a factory worker. [Issue#221, p.81]
