At first I played the game and found it interesting. But than i realized I played game like this and it was much better experience. Fallout 2 !!

Graphics : Many people here say Wastelands 2 isn't about the graphics . Fine . The graphics are one thing. You can make a game that has low tech graphics but still has ArtStyle that adds great Vibe to the game. Again Fallout 2. This game has problems in artstyle direction it has no direction . The World looks empty , unfinished , nothing like America from that time period I felt more like in Ukraine not USA. Some places just slap generic textures on models that look horrible. Sometimes you see nice post apocaliptic scenery after two steps you look at horrible buildings from PS1 era. There is noo Cool Armour (still can't see it after you wear it), Characters lack any cool detail and their creation is just very basic . Guns are your standard arsenal except for the special guns that better versions are found in . Yep . Fallout 2.

And Google Map Looks better than the world map in this game !!!

Enemies : Another thing that got me bored were the Enemies . Your standard . Generic Giant bugs , people , robots . Nothing Cool in design to fight Like in Ehem ehem Fallout 2 Badass soldiers in first cutscene ;) . There are not a single Cool Boss fight . The Ending is very generic I won't spoil it for you.

Strategy and AI - It's very basic . I started on Hard and I never felt like the enemy will do something different than rush at me. Like I said maps are empty and most of the time Narrow and limited. You won't find cover in the buildings. The only strategy you use is too position your troops soo you wont hit your friend . After that it's just numbers game and hope your gun wont jam . Most of the times I lost a team mate because of just Bad luck . Missed when I had 92% and second shot jammed my gun in the same turn . CoD has more strategy than this game. Seriously after playing hours I found my self bored. AI is very basic . And Random Encounters on World map are a joke. Maps are very small and repeat over and over. Again in Fallout 2 you had randomly generated maps and you could find something interesting in them aside from enemies.

Skills - These are your standard stuff in rpg , guns , rifles , agility , charisma etc. I didnt like that almost every Door , Chest had to have a Trap . And you got diffrent skill to lockpick different skill for safe and hacking, 3 skills to talk Those were just BUSY work and most of the time you had to switch characters too use them. There is too many traps . I just started to save my game all the time and reload because in early game you will die often because of those traps. And there are some quests that you will fail if your % of fixing will fail .50% deactivating an alarm . Failed ? Reload . This system it stupid . It dsnt require no skill only luck. In Deus Ex you had to play some minigame to open lock's it required your focus. Here just Luck

Story and Quests - Story is a mixbag . You will have to read . A lot to get something o value . This game has a lot of text. It describes everything and it could be a textgame because it's says most minor details. It makes the mistake : Tells but never shows . Game is voice acted sometimes , sometimes it's not . The Idea was a mix of MadMax and Texas Ranger . Voice acting is great , storytelling was good but it moved sooo god damn slow.
The main problem was I never felt like doing anything Epic . Aside from shooting my life is more interesting than this. Fix this Fix that . Kill Bug's , Bring that , Fix that . Again In Fallout 2 from the start you know your on Epic Journey and you meet soo many interesting NPC in game. In this I never felt . Wow this is a great Hero or NPC I like. They are all bland. Cities are bland also Quests are very dull and stupid .

I want too be fair this game had some good things thats why i gave it 5 . I focused on bad things because its like no reviewer EVER mentioned those before . Basicly this game is like a Slot Machine. If you have bad luck no skill will save you. If you Never played Fallout 1,2,3 , or XCom you can get all those games that are far better for the price of this game.

Yeah, actually it could be a 7/10, but the second half is very buggy.

Well, first the good: I like the graphics. Weapon models in particular are nice. Though kill animations could be more varied/weapon dependant. You get to control 7 characters. It has turn-based combat with a cool Combat Initiative system. Oh and it has a GREAT atmosphere. Not so good: Its full of plotholes.

Oh and it has a GREAT atmosphere.

    Not so good:
Its full of plotholes. Like if Rangers spent the last 15 years strenghtening their ranks and fortifying their position, how could they NOT secure their nearby respective water and food supply towns.
Combat system is kinda simplistic. Flanking doesn't work well, as cover provides full 180 degree frontal protection. And you get the cover accuracy bonus even against enemies behind you... Ranged enemies run into melee range and want to hug you. You can't target and disable different body parts (there's only "headshot", which cannot score a critical hit). The critical hit system is pretty basic. Weapon ranges are pretty pathetic, especially for sniper rifles.
    There are no Perks/Talents/Feats!
There are many redundant skills, such as Field Medic and Surgeon.

    The BAD:
The attributes are weak, have very little impact on gameplay. The difference between 1 and 10 in Coordination or Luck attributes provides less to-hit bonus/critical chance then 1-2 weapon skill ranks.
Skills are entirely severed from the attributes and function in a void. A Strenght 1 character will be just as good in the "Brute Force" skill, as a Str 10 body-builder. The skillschecks get progressively tougher in this game (regardless of what the skillcheck concern), only maximum skill ranks count. Which means that you designate some skills to each character in the start andalways onlyraise these skills. Level ups are monotonous, as you only get some hp and a few skill points which may or may not be enough to raise one of your chosen skills. It could just as well be automatic.
The loor is entirely randomized. It seems in Arizona it was raining booby-trapped safes and boxes with master locks, as they are scattered everywhere, regardless if their location makes sense or not. Unfortunately they contain mostly useless, random junk.
Armor is useless. The system is pathetic and actually it may be harmfull in the second half of the game.

Technical trouble:I got an old PC.Thats not a problem, most games run just fine(im talking about assasins creed black flag and such titles).Im glad when a game like WL2 comes around cause it suits my PC better.Thats what i thought.I had issues in the EA-version of the game with the "Write to location 00000000 caused an access violation" problem. If you got a 32 bit system youll probally know about it.In short, the game uses up too much ressources while doing things. For some, even open the questlog will cause a crash. For me, it cashes when im entering the railroads nomads camp.Gamestopping i think. There is a workarround for some people but that shouldnt be necessary and its not always working.Sorry, the game looks like crap, sounds like crap and even Skyrim runs just fine on my PC.But WL2 got issues?Bad optimization, sorry guys. For that, ill substract 2 points from my score.

    Ok, into detail:

Visuals:The game looks like crap, in every setting. While this is ok for some things, thats just to much.Everything looks like you are standing in a puddle of mud.Charactermodels are pretty bad.Visual effects?Nonexsistent!Even explosives are not great. You can say its an indiegame or its costs just XX, i dont care.Even much older games look better and the games artdesign is not that great.Look at Fallout 1 or 2.You can play it today, it looks oks cause it aged well.Wasteland 2 looks not just outdated.

Sound:There is not much voiceacting, but when there is a voiceover its is great!!!Good quality, great cast.
The music is ok, it fits the setting. But there is not much variety.Weaponsounds are cheap. The FAMAs for example sounds better than most weapons, why?

Gameplay:There are some flaws in the general design. For example when you talk to someone and you want or have to use one of the speechskills(like kissass).Youll have to select the character for this action. While on its own this isnt so tragic, there are many little things like that and they sum up over the time.At some point i was really annoyed(like the regular callin for promotion aka leveling up). What the developer have done well is the deversity of skills you can use.Often, there is more than one way.I like that. The combat is a problem i think. You cant do that much, even taking cover is ruined by the fact that many enemy groups are made up of a mix of enemytypes. They will try to storm you position like hell(and will get kiled far too easy). That ruins the only real option you got, take cover. So, youll often just standing arround and shoot, especially when you fight animals. For 2014 thats not enough, sorry. And there is another problem with the random encountersystem. The groups youll encounter are badly scaled. There are small groups of 3 enemys with 15 HP or less that are too weak for you, even when you start. And than there are overpowered(when syou start they are really overpowered) groups with 80-145 HP and good armor, in the starting area.Thats badly designed, sorry.

All in all this game is no masterpiece. It still got bugs, many bugs.Gamestoppingbugs.Search on google, youll see. After such an extensive EA-phase thats a no go!!!A solid 7 if you got a 64-bit OS and enough RAM.If you got a 32-bit OS its pure luck if the game runs like it should.Ive got a 32-bit OS and troubles, for me the game is a 5 at best.

I really enjoyed this game, the story was good, excellent quests and a good amount of playtime to finish. The only real gripe I have is that it's difficult to make a very varied RPG when you just have guns to deal with. It's much less unique than being able to play around with special abilities such as magic. Overall a winner.

I like how much it resembles the original Fallout games. I don't like how it is missing key elements from the very same games.

I still think it is very good and enjoyable and because I am more or less passionate about the series and the teams behind them, I will list the big cons I've experienced so far:
    - Skills and attributes have very little connection. Attributes affect skills in marginal or indirect ways. I hoped to see an improved version of Fallout where each attribute matters nearly equally. Instead, I really only need intelligence and/or strength and/or coordination. The rest is rubbish.
    - It feels painfully linear. Painfully linear. One of the awesome traits of the predecessors was their non-linear nature. In Wasteland 2 I feel locked to the point of claustrophobia.
    - As some others stated, the overall feeling is that the world is hollow.
    - Near the end of the game, and particularly in Hollywood, all quests are completed within 10 feet of where they begin. Do something super trivial for this stage of the game, get xp. Very disappointing.
    - Outdoorsman skill. Oh boy. It is not an investment in something useful. It is extortion. Put points in it or you can't get from city A to city B without 5 random encounters that bring you nothing.
    - At some point I found a very cleverly hidden sniper rifle - decent one. 5 minutes later a salesman comes in town and he has all the best weapons for this stage of the game. I have enough money to buy them all. It feels so unrewarding.
    - The landscape is filled with safes and chests. Half of them are rigged. Most contain junk. Very unpleasant.
    - In one of the cities a shopkeeper has all the top-tier weapons of each class. I can buy them all and still have some cash. I can buy all the armor, as well. And all the good explosives. And still have cash. Very unrewarding.
    - Hard Ass, Smart Ass, Kick Ass don't feel unique enough. The conversation branches which are unlocked with these skills are one-liners with instant xp reward.
    - The only aiming option, headshot, is unbelievably useless in most cases.
    - The game pushes hardware to the limit without amazing visual effects.
    - I expected a ton of bugs due to the nature of the game. The case was the same with Fallout and all those patches. And it is :) But, seriously, patch 1 is a gigabyte, patch 2 is 2.4 gigabytes. Really?
    - The discussion thread on steam had a message from a dev. He asked for a specific way to report bugs: reproduce at least a couple of times, have a savegame, describe all the steps and conditions for the bug, send an email with attachment and fill in all the details. No sir. That's not how you do it.

It's still a 8/10 game for me. I was expecting more, after a year of delays.

An instant classic for fans of Wasteland 1 and Fallout 1/2. I loved every bit of the 60 hours I played. Haven't been this hooked on a RPG since Dragon Age. I would rate it higher but there are some bugs, especially in the second map and it is easy to break some quests if you are not careful. Things like that are fixable and at heart it's a grand time. Just don't expect the combat of Fallout 2.

Knowing that, there is not much into playing multiple times. I played it to half first time, then restarted since I realised I made wrong weapon skills choices. Next time I made better team and finished the game. It was cool, nice, fun, but kinda easy this time when I had proper team.

I played it once more on Supreme Jerk difficulty, but this time I didn't come to finish since it is all pretty much the same.

    Bad sides are:
    1) there is no "perks" from Fallout 2
    2) character "skills" are not related to character "attributes" at all
    3) you are forced to look on-line for "followers" information if you want to plan proper team setup with supplementing skills, or you can gimp your party (game-play) heavily
    4) wearing "armor" does not affect your look :/ - instead there is clothing you can change, but it doesn't change anything except actual look, which is pretty pointless in single player game - you can just sell all cloths on start to get some extra money :)

    Overall, well worth the money.

There is a hidden depth in character creation and game mechanics that many overlook, but I found refreshing. Whereas I expected a real Fallout 3, the truth is this game feels like turn based Dungeon Siege. Strategy-wise, combat is pretty light with a few options like "headshot" or "ambush" that keep it short of being a total Dungeon Siege. Wasteland 2 however, manages to establish a setting which is believably well...post-apocalyptic. And more importantly it manages to detach itself from Fallout cliches.

    Cons:
    - Minimum combat. Tactics are often nothing more than moving your characters away and closer to enemies. There are few hiding spots and even so they get overrun with melee units in the first turn. This is not to say that combat is not fun. It still is but it's not deep.
    - Probability nightmare. Everything in this game works on probabilities, in and out combats. And these probabilities don't always feel like they should be. A weapon that has 4% of jam jams like it was 20%. I often faced multiple consecutive jams in a fight. Also, spending a lot of time loading the game just to successfully unlock a chest isn't really fun
    - Dungeon Siege/Diablo-esque progression. Things are more difficult to do simply because you encounter them later. In Diablo, monsters you face in later levels are the same ones you faced before, but with more HP and different name and color. It's the same here except they don't have different name or color. Sometimes it feels anachronistic. Why can't I unlock this chest when yesterday I disarmed a nuclear missile ?

    PROS
    - Excellent writing, at least in the fist half of the game. Witty narrative and character interaction, dark humor, it's all there. However that the longer you play the more you will feel the game was rushed. The second half of the game is like a copy of the first. You fought barbarians, religious fanatics, and robots in Arizona. Well you fight barbarians, religious fanatics and robots in LA too. The finale is the weakest of all.
    - Excellent voice acting. This is something that Fargo games excel in. I particularly like the radio chatters which play when I walk around the wasteland. They even hired a church choir to sing radio commercial of a demented church gang.
    - Bold story branching. If you have played RPGs from Bioware or BlackIsle, you must have seen the "third option" option in dialogues or other interactions that requires a lot of points in speech or other particular attribute. When you pick it, you will pacify two conflicting sides or save everyone in a distress. In Wasteland if you pull this off, you would kill everyone. Wasteland is grim and bleak world and even if you think you have given it the best, you will still screw it.

So is it a good game ? It is, in the way that Dungeon Siege was not a bad game either. Maybe it is not Jagged Alliance or Xcom as some of you expected but it is still fun and satisfying. Still, I can't help but feel that Fargo will have more difficulty convincing his backers of future projects, Torment Numenera comes to mind.

The original Wasteland holds up as one of my favorite games of all time, so when I stumbled upon the kickstarter for this more than 2 decades later, I jumped on it...and then had to wait another 2+ years in anticipation. I probably would give it a 6, but it gets a bonus point for the nostalgia.

Wastleland 2 definitely brought back memories of the original, but it did get a bit tedious.

Wastleland 2 definitely brought back memories of the original, but it did get a bit tedious. Kill the baddies, sell/salvage the extra loot to free up encumbrance, buy more ammo, repeat. I can also see how it could be tough going without having read up on how to make a party before starting off. You definitely want to understand the CLASSIC system before you start and do not spread skill points too thin.

Multiple ways to solve problems (and decisions affecting the side stories) was nice.

I had no problem with the graphics. They are a nice mix of modern meshed with old-school (if you are a young'un, don't expect top of the line HD stuff here).

The story was a little shallow, but it was very similar to the original (which I think was a nod to it). I also thought the final battle was a bit of a let down.

One thing I did notice (or rather did not notice) was the lack of bugs. I know this is one of the reasons Fargo and company extended the deadline...they wanted it perfect. I can say I never had an issue whatsoever with anything going haywire.

Overall I liked it, but it could have had a little more story and a little less monotony. Perhaps a Wasteland 3 will get the score up in the 9-10 range.

The only negative is going to graphic design. In some places it`s erratic and low budget. But after all its not a big problem.

I can tell a lot of thought and talent has gone into this title and it shows.

If you played (and liked) Wasteland, Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics you're gonna love this game. Wasteland 2 is the best approach to the question "What if Interplay made Fallout 3?".

Deep, dark and mature storyline and setting, nice combat system (if you're into isometric, turn-based RPGs) and an amazing experience if you don't mind to read a lot while playing.

This is a solid 9/10 title as of patch 3.

The audio effects are the only area where I get the impression of indie production values. I weighed all that against the fact that this is a USD $40 new release and USD $60 is now the norm for AAA productions in determining my score.

My only sage advice: have a strategy going into the game re: character development, trying to develop one as you go will lead to longer grinds for experience and take away from the pacing.

It does have some bad aspects, sometimes it is stupid, sometimes it's meaningless. I was expecting a darker, meaner, more offensive game.
It probably won't leave a nice mark in my mind as fallout 1 & 2 did, but it is enjoyable and there are no games like it nowadays, so play it, you won't regret that much.

I really wanted to like this game. But i can't. I love isometric RPGs and i played them all. I even replay both the original Fallouts once every three years or so. Sadly, the Wasteland 2 fails on so many levels that the few that are actually good won't save it. I love isometric RPGs and i played them all. I even replay both the original Fallouts once every three years or so. Sadly, the Wasteland 2 fails on so many levels that the few that are actually good won't save it. And the fact that Divinity: Original Sin and Shadowrun: Dragonfall came out recently and are superior on almost every level makes this game look even worse.

    Combat:
Total letdown. Almost no tactial options. While in Divinity i would use my rogue to sneak behind enemy lines and start with an ability that costs a lot of AP and is only usefull as an opening getting bonuses from backstab as well as from attack from stealth. After that i will use the artifact and teleport my tank to the rogue and make him knock down the most dangerous foe while my mage will teleport oil barrel near the enemies and ignite it. While my tank has fire resist over 100% so the flames actually heal him.
And in Wasteland? I open with a shot. After that all my other characters shoot. Some use the weapon ability to shoot multiple rounds as it has the best dmg/Ap. Then all the enemies shoot, now all my characters shoot. When you are skilled you can try for a headshots (And that just causes more dmg, no penalties to aiming or anything and you can't aim for any other bodypart) Sometimes you can use verticality or cover (that has been clearly added to the game as an afterthought) And THAT IS ALL! No abilities, no gadgets, no skills, no perks. NOTHING!!!

    Character progression:
There is none! You have attributes and skills. Attributes can be minmaxed as some are clearly better than the others. Skills are just your percentual chance to do stuff. You will NEVER gain new ability or perk or anything. Nothing that will change the gameplay. You will never learn anything new throughout this game. You will just know how to open a box better. Mainly because boxes near the end of the game are harder to open then the boxes at the beginning of the game. Yes, the same boxes...

    Quickloading:
As the game desing is bad you will load very often. In fact you will memorize the loading screen very well. You see, everything is percentual and dependant on your skill. IE luck based. You see a locked box with a trap and an alarm. You have 50% to disarm the alarm, 40% to disarm the bomb and 70% to pick the lock. So disarm - fail - disarm - fail - disarm success - alarm - fail - alarm - fail - alarm - success - pick - fail - pick - critical fail - LOAD and repeat.

    Graphics:
Amazingly bad. I mean really bad. Much worse than Fallout 1 or 2. It is technically bad (low res textures, low poly models) and aesthetically bad (repeating of assets, assests with different textures next to each other, the same mood everywhere, the same models everywhere). You don't even have much of an avatar picture choice when creating your characters. And some of that pictures are later used in the game on other characters! The graphics are much worse than in The Fall: Last days of Gaia which is old, low budget german post-apo game from nonome developer.

    Story
Here it isn't bad. The story is quite good. Sadly it is told via big chunks of texts. I like to read in games. Planescape Torment is one of my most beloved games and it has much more text. But the text in that game is exciting and relevant. Here most of the things that people will tell you are things that you have already heard milion times from others. But you have to read it all because sometimes in this ocean of text there is useful information.

    Choices
The choices are a mixed bag. You are often presented with multiple choices and you actually feel the consequences. That is very good. But sometimes the choices themselves seem illogical. At the beginning of the game you have to choose to save one of two settlements. Either the superimportant one that feeds all the surroundings including your ranger base, or the other superimportant one that provides water to everyone. You as a new recruit. One ranger of many. And after you do that you suddenldy hear the other rangers chat on radio. How they helped to save some merchants or how they saved some cows. Yea, but they couldn't save the superimportant settlement...

    Conclusion:
This review might seem too harsh but if someone asked me what game to play - Wasteland 2 or Fallout 1, the game that came out 17 years ago, i would recomment F1 without hesitation. And that tells you something about this game...
If you want to play good modern isometric RPG, play Shadowrun: Dragonfall or Divinity: Original Sin.

I played for about 20 hours now and at around the first quarter of the story. I picked a wide variety of skills for my party to be prepared for almost every situation, that's how i play such games. Later in the game i specialize my group when i have learned which skills and weapons are usefull. For the people who say: The attribute/skillsystem is **** sorry, but you have to read! Every skill and attribute is exactly described. And solely because other games need strenght for a meele charakter, doesn't mean that every game have to do it that way. Again, just read the description of the attributes.

So for now my party is doing very well. The quests are very diversified and interresting. The locations are detailed and immersive. But for the hole experience you have to read a lot of text. All characters and locations you find have very well written descriptions and information for the plot or some quests. You have to think for yourself, there are no questmarkers or such things. And there are a lot of decisions to make, sometimes with an unexpected outcome. So the world and the story so far are great and i'm really enjoing it right now.

The combat system pretty much is the same as it was in Fallout 2. You have cover, different firing modes, different calibers etc... this is important, because bigger bulltes punches better trough tough armor than smaller ones. The only feature i'm missing compared to Fallout 2 is to target specific bodyparts. But ok, no major gamebreaker.

So in the end Wasteland 2 is a great game for me and i give it a solid 9/10.

    For the 0/10 people... seriously?

Now about graphic. Environment is OK, may be more diverse and more detailed, but in general it's great. On the other hand, models of characters, it's textures and animations are just ugly :) But who the **** cares ;) One thing that is disappointing is that armor doesn't change appearance of your characters.

Graphics and Sound: The environments are truly impressive even if the overall graphics aren’t by any standards today. The sound work is superb to say the least.

Playability and Entertainment: The gameplay is heavily tactics-based and enjoyable nonetheless. There’s definitely strategy involved but the adventure isn’t an impossible one. The story and journey as a whole is definitely ingrained with wit and darkness in equal portions here and there.

The combat system of WL2 has almost no tactical aspects in it and the rules and physics of a gunfight have are not from this world. The cover system was a nice try to bring some tactics in to the game, but the logic of it is just silly.

I wish it all had gone perfectly and we could've witnessed a cinderella story of gaming, but it did not go that well in all honesty. I'm sorry to say that this game is far to simplified and stupid for me to keep my interest in it and it only made me more hungry for a good turn based RPG.

Please, my fellow gamers, be honest with your reviews, you're doing a disservice for the devs and to our whole community by praising a mediocre game. Wasteland 2 is a 10? Seriously? What is the far more versatile FO2 then, a 12?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout fan since the beginning, I got disappointed by the unfinished game mechanics (horrible looting, very boring displacement and repetitive operations), but also disappointed by the unpolished adventure aspect. Most of the time you just go there, find the target, activate the dialog or kill it, then come back and get the XP. Most of the story is just lacking the adventure and the poetry that Fallout 1, 2 and 3 were proposing and your team is just bursting through badgers, raiders and robots most of the time.
Added to this is a lack of finish in the end game, which is a real pity since the game is quite short in content. When you wander for the first time through the Santa Fe Base, and only cross a few creatures and crappy crates for the whole map, you just feel like the developers didn't have time to complete a real map like what they did in the first part (High Pool, Ag Center, the Prison) Nothing to do there ? And this feeling is coming more and more often as you get closer to the end.
What is really sad is that they lost most of their sense of humor and story-telling : the last part of the game is just a straightforward fight ... till the great blow.
The last - but not the least - failure in this project is the re playability, in my opinion.
All Fallout games -and all good games by the way - were a real joy to replay. Wasteland 2 has it that you must play the game a certain way to optimize XP learning, DPS (assault rifle is the best) and companion encounters. I played it in "hard" and discovered most of the game ; I'm finishing it in "Full Jerk" now.. it's quite easy and very very predictable. I'll finish it for the second time, and that's all.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some people say this is a brilliant Fallout 2 sequel that will be bringing back memories from an era of gaming long forgotten.

The biggest problem with this game is not the combat (which is at most mediocre, and becomes boring to soon), or the graphics that look a little outdated, but the RPG elements that are shallow. Is this even an RPG game ?

You won't feel any real connection to your character. There is little customization, and you decisions don't really matter in the world.

You feel no connection to your party. The characters in your party lack real backstories and are in no way memorable. You don't real care about them as long as they hit the enemies. They don't react to your decisions (btw, are there any real decisions ?!) and they don't interact with the world.

Other problem is the lack of replayability. In theory you have plenty of customization and skills in which to invest your skill points, but in the end you will have to do the same party build if you want to finish the game. Also, there is no synergy between your skills. All you have to do is to disperse the skill points in way you cover everything.

I am glad the game was short because I was bored pretty quickly.

Mediocrity is the keyword to describe Wasteland 2.

Great game, but highly recommended that you read up on a strategy guide (see Google) before you create a party with "less than ideal" stats/abilities, as these have a huge effect on gameplay and you can easily make things quite difficult for yourself (in my case I actually had to restart the game with a new party after reading up on it, because I basically got stuck!). With that caveat, great game

No, it's worse, because it is slower.
What is worse, you have to repeat it endlessly.

    And the skills.
There are bunch of pointless skills and it requires you to use it over and over and over and over and over and over again. Oh god, I cannot overemphasize how boring it is.

And there is no creativity of what so ever in using skill.
Just a sickening amount of grinding.

You may think it's not really a problem. But it is.
It takes too much time just to pick a lock on a random box, or to open a door.

If it had been an adventure game(combats and skills stripped off), it would have been better.

One negative review here mentions this as a drawback, that the characters you create have no real backstories and therefore are not memorable. Well I created four very unique characters with awesome backstories that I wrote myself. Combine this with the option of importing custom portraits, and you have the tools needed to create some very cool post-apocalyptic badasses who will be memorable with a little creativity and imagination.

Another aspect of Wasteland 2 that's cool and retro is the text descriptions of places you visit. Most games are satisfied with just visually revealing a new area for you to explore. Wasteland 2 also adds a paragraph or two of well written text descriptions that definitely add to the world immersion. Sure you can graphically see how a mysterious cave entrance looks when you encounter it, but to also read about the smell of stale air and the foreboding sense of dread it gives you just adds so much detail to an already interesting world.

So that's just a couple of things that Wasteland 2 does that makes it so great and so retro. Newer gamers will no doubt find this game tedious and slow. Older gamers will find it refreshing. It's as simple as that. And please people, stop rating a game on how poorly it runs on your system. It's usually not the developer's fault, or at least it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game. If it doesn't work on your system and you can't play it, then how can you rate it (I'm looking at you Chowda)?!? Of course it's frustrating to purchase software that you can't immediately play, but technical issues don't equate to a bad game.

I'm a big fan of turn-based strategy games. Its basically just Fallout 2 with slightly nicer graphics, or so it seemed to begin with. Unfortunately it lacks the charm and wit of Fallout 2 whilst still completely ripping off every other aspect of it. In many ways this game is inferior to Fallout 2 in complexity and fun.

Basically, you have to design a party of 4 rangers (who form your base characters) to begin with and then can add another 3 npc followers to this as you progress. Thats 7 party members in all running around! Way, way too many. Just 4 would have been fine. With 7 members we frequently outnumber the enemy in fights, making the battles feel very one-sided and unfair (in my favour).

** When designing your group you must assign them attributes (strength, intelligence etc) and skills (lockpicking, leadership etc). However, for the most part the attributes have absolutely no impact whatsoever on the skills. You can have a character with strength 1 and they will be just as effective at the 'Brute Force' skill as a character with strength 10. It literally makes no difference. The attributes are still important because they determine your combat stats for the rest of the game, but their lack of impact upon the skills is very disappointing.

** Also, with the way the game flows you can only really invest each character with around 4-6 skills each (including weapon skills) or you will soon find that they become useless very quickly. So don't count on variety spicing things up.

** As people have said before, many of the skills are simply used for opening chests, which you will come across constantly. You can't walk 10 paces without hitting another chest. It seems to be the number 1 hobby in the wastelands.

** There are a very limited number of character portraits for the npcs in the game. This means that, while their descriptions will vary greatly in the text, their appearance will not. This becomes very frustrating.

** The questions you can ask each npc are incessantly repetitive. "What do you think of ....?" comes up A LOT. You will find yourself asking different people the same questions over and over again and reading almost identical and pointless answers, which gets very, very tedious.

** The jokes are not funny. Its actually quite painful how hard they've tried to be funny, but most of the time it just falls flat.

** Don't even bother with melee skills. Even with an 80% chance to hit you will still inexplicably miss constantly. With guns this is not the case. Guns are far superior.

I'm not saying this is a terrible game - its not. If you enjoyed Fallout 2 and don't mind a slightly simplified version of it, then this may well be the game for you. It is still mildly entertaining in certain ways. It is NOT, however, a £40 title by any stretch of the imagination. It is worth £15 at most. If you pay full price for it then you'd better really, really love Fallout 2 a whole lot.

To me it is a solid 9 and I can't wait for a potential sequel.

PS: Stop mentioning Fallout. This isn't Fallout, it's Wasteland. If you want Fallout go play that first person shooter turd Bethesda made or play the originals.

Some people are also upset that the game forces you to think about your decisions and tactical set up, they instead prefer to blame the game rather than themselves.

This game is, in my opinion, rich in plot and combat, it will be further improved when Inxile move the game to Unity 5. People who want an easy game to jump in and play for the 'action' will be sorely disappointed. I recommend this game for those who are expecting to put in serious hours and enjoy reading in general. Before you go 'Yeah sure, rabid fanboy!', in fact I am a sterner critic than those who paid only $30. I have more reason to shout, criticise and flame Inxile due to heavily supporting the game yet I find the pros outweigh the cons with this game. I am sorry that this game isn't the spoonfed, 'Press X' and filled with motion cap cutscenes experience that some buyers expected. Tally ho!

For a while, Wasteland 2 was a nice trip 'back in time' to when Turn-Based Games ruled the roost. It immediately game me that squishy "Aww, I remember all the fun I had with the original X-Com back in '94".

It possess many of the elements I like in a Turn-Based game, such as 1) Squad formation deployments (ok, only from 1 to 4 units, but that's still a 'squad") 2) RPG-like skill

    1) Squad formation deployments (ok, only from 1 to 4 units, but that's still a 'squad")
    2) RPG-like skill development (remember X-Com? The more you did something, the better you got at it?)
    3) Micromanagement/customization of Squad equipment and appearance
    4) Full control of tactical deployment and execution
    5) The resolution: I could see what the heck I was doing (Sorry Good Old Games, but I need better resolution sometimes ;)

It's a fun romp through the deserts of Arizona/California in what appears to be a carefully managed "sandbox feeling" approach. You think you can go anywhere and do anything, however you slowly realize you are just riding the rails set out for you. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, everyone could use a little hand-holding after all to learn the ropes, but 30 hours into the game you could let up a bit...

And that's the thing with this game: after a while things stop making sense.
    1) Certain weapon specializations are less than useful except when considering available ammo. I mean, wielding pistols is cool, but that they are not much faster to use as compared to a squad-level support machine gun
    2) Armour: it's applied rather wonkily. Higher is worse for defending versus energy weapons?....
    3) Controls are a little weird, especially when it comes to skill usage
    4) "Random encounters" is defined as "the same map for the umpteenth time"
    5) Skill development is clunky
    6) The AI is crazy-brilliant or retarded, depends how you look at it
    7) Hardly destructible map
    8) *Insert playability issue you notice next* Etcetera adnauseam.

After a few missions the fatigue of the grind sets in. That was bearable in good games of the past because something was usually going on in the background that would eventually complete and there would be a noticeable game change (ie: research was complete and you now have "item x" or whatever). But nothing is going on here. It's just "open door/kill everything/close door". Sure, the AI characters are getting stronger but so are you.

So yes, it's new. But being new it's simply not as good as it's predecessors. It's not even as good as Silent Storm if you ask me and that's a game that's 10 years old already, let alone X-Com & Jagged Alliance. If you're bored, get it and try it. But you're $$ might be better spent getting any of the titles I just mentioned.

Very simple combat, cliche filled story and in my humble opinion way too many things to find, that dont actually mean anything. As in finding some locked, trapped chest behind locked and trapped door hidden in the corner of huuuge ass map should award something more than some pants, 3 bullets and a human leg.

I very much anticipated this game as a fallout 1 and 2 fan. The game delivered quite well. But I must say that I was quite disappointed with the lack of variation in combat, it had quite a few bugs and one especially annoying with character movement.

Story was good and overall the game was enjoyable.

Now I read that inXile is upgrading the game from Unity 4.5 to Unity 5.0 which will make graphic looks even better, and the next patch will bring perks into the game. So I will be going though the game again soon :)

Also there is high replayability possible, because your game will probably always be different because of choices/party composition and you can really roleplay in it!

I recommend it to anyone that wants to get back to old days of cRPG games and experience proper Fallout game!

Playing started to feel like a chore after around the canyon of titan, then i had to get though railroad nomads and it got srsly boring, just going back and forth, also quests are pretty limited and poorly designed even when it's not another fetching quest like 99% of them... When i finally dragged myself to California i was just having no fun from playing anymore... Ran around starting complex and decided to spend my free time on something more enjoyable...
I srsly see no merit to this game... Writing and story is okeyish at best but nothing involving or exciting that would make me want to play any longer to pursue the story. Gameplay is pretty repetitive, outdated, poorly thought out and too simple... I mean combat, mechanics, interacting with the world, quests.. srsly overrated game, hyped by hipster kickstarter backers, rated highly because its so muh oldschool while in fact its a mediocre game at best.

Not so suprising, as I am a great fan of turn based strategy games, I find it vital that a game has solid story, offers relevant choices (both tactical and strategic ones) amd I don't mind (actually like) to read a lot. And I find that the added-value of flawless graphics are somewhat overrated, so I am ready for compromises in this department. If you agree with me upon these things, you will have great time playing. If not... then maybe W2 was not meant for you.
To explain why I did not give 9 or 10: I find some parts of the games are too long, like a book that should have been more carefully edited. The ability system is also a bit disappointing, as it binds your hands before you could understand the game (forget about advices on the net, where you can find anything as well as its contrary). Considering the slow progression, 1 additional point per each ten levels gives practically no margin to reshuffle later on. I understand that 'the wasteland is a harsh and unforgiving place', but this is simply evil. Thirdly, things are a bit overcomplicated (again, editing). Despite the time that I spend to understand what is going on and why, I often do not have the info for solid choices. So I guess. Then I am simply surprised to see that sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't ... But why??? Dunno... The 'harsh and unforgiving' covers a lot of ground, but at the same time it is me who plays and if I am pushed around too much, that easily becomes irritating.
Anyway, on balance, this is a great game!!

It's actually somewhat hard for me to list what I liked about this game, because my opinion is based mostly on what I don't like. I'm a fan of turn-based RPG's, so they all kinda start out as a perfect 10 for me, and the score goes down as I find things I don't like.

There's a nice variety of items.

    The map is fairly large.

The game doesn't look unreasonably bad.

The combat would be fairly complex if this were 1998.

    The bad:

The items are all fairly shallow increments on one another. The difference between the M1 Rifle and the M14 is a couple points of damage and a different AP (Action points - the "currency" you spend to perform actions in combat) cost. The difference between the M14 and the famas is another couple points of damage and different AP cost. The difference between the famas and the M16 is more damage and different AP cost. I was never really excited finding a new weapon or item - it always just amounts to "yay, more damage" or "I've already passed this increment" if you've found something below what you have.

The map lacks some serious polish. If you aren't aware, basically the game tries to emulate Fallout's map style, but in 3D. The entire thing resembles one big model desert made by a 2nd grader. Just flat, tan, monotone desert floor broken up by mountains - all of which look the same. It leads to some things that break immersion in the modern gamer, such as running into a random encounter of raiders on this flat monotone desert landscape, only to enter the battlefield and find you were travelling through an industrial complex. "An industrial complex?" I ask. "I was literally in the middle of nowhere in a desert with no landmarks. This apparent industrial complex was not on the map." Something that would be acceptable if this were 1998, but the game was released in 2014.

The graphics are not at all up to par with 2014 standards. This would probably hold up if we were playing in 2003. It's not terrible, not something to really shred the game about in my opinion, but it definitely does take away from the moment at times, realizing how horrible animation quality (there are maybe 4 different reload animations for every weapon in the game, for example) is, how horrible the models are (the weapons and character models especially), and how bad texture quality can be.

The combat is shallow. After you've experienced your first battle, that's it. You've experienced all the game has to offer in that department. You will fight more enemies with higher health with a bigger squad and better weapons as the game goes on, but as far as mechanics go, it never gets any deeper. It becomes a huge chore to fight enemies, especially coming from a game like XCOM Enemy Unknown which is, in my opinion, the gold standard for how turn-based isometric RNG-based ranged weapon-based combat should be done. In Wasteland 2, you start out with a handful of "skills" to use in combat, and that's it. It doesn't change as the game goes on. In XCOM, you start out with a couple of skills that change the way combat goes, and as the game goes on it gets more and more complex with deeper and deeper skills and augments changing your strategies and how you play. One baseline strategy will work throughout the entire game for Wasteland 2.

The AI is extremely barebones. There are two types of AI in combat it seems. One will keep distance and take pot-shots, and the other will rush the spot where it can get the best shot off at whatever character it chooses - regardless of the danger it will put itself in. As I stated, it becomes a chore.

The voice acting is utterly atrocious. Ridiculously bad. I honestly can't stand it at times and I have no idea why others don't comment on this. There is one character at the starting settlement who speaks 100% in yelling, which combined with poor timing and unenlightened dialogue make for a hilarious spectacle, as he tricks me into being harmed by a goat and shouts in his burly man shout "HA-HA-HA HE TOTALLY HEADBUTTED YOUR ASS" and then, after I kill the goat, shouts "WHY DID YOU KILL IT? I LOVED THAT GOAT. YOU GUYS ARE JERKS" without a trace of humor or irony in his voice.

There are also just miscellaneous other things in the game which simply lack polish and charm. Remember how talking to some characters in Fallout presented you with an animated version of their face? There's nothing like that here. No one to get attached to. No inspired, witty dialogue. No brilliantly crafted environments and no satisfying problems to solve, besides who to shoot first and whether or not you can get away with moving a character into cover closer to the bad guys without initiating combat.

I've enjoyed the game. Lot of attention put into describing areas, situations. Conversations are varied and rich. The game shows you early on that your choices have consequences.

Combat system is ok. Reminiscent of the newer X-COM combat system. I can't say I've been overly impressed with the games graphics. My impression is that Shadowrun did a better job with graphics, however

Combat system is ok. Reminiscent of the newer X-COM combat system. I can't say I've been overly impressed with the games graphics. My impression is that Shadowrun did a better job with graphics, however Wasteland 2 is full 3D, whereas Shadowrun Returns the camera can't rotate on itself.

Wasteland 2 makes use of this rotating camera a lot, hiding boxes and treasures in nooks and crannies that you may miss if you aren't looking at the right angle. I liked that.

Skill system is interesting. Rewards you for overspecializing, yet there are so many different skills that you can't overspecialize in everything. I've encountered lots of opportunities to use my skills. Most of the time, though, difficulty checks are high - so it's not a good idea to have a jack-of-all-trades kind of character. Best to spec in 3-4 skills at most (per character).

The music is more like ambiance sound than music. It's not bad in itself, but sometimes it makes combat feel anticlimatic.

Overall, I think the game is good. I believe it is true to Wasteland's spirit, it has a lot of funny and grim moments. It is a game, however, that is meant to be appreciated by taking the time to pay attention to details (through dialogue and description), otherwise, you miss out on the majority of the game.

    The Plot:
It's pretty much what you would expect from your post apocalyptic story line. The characters are a healthy mix of serious and fun, pretty much what I would have expected. The world is believable and yet never overly serious. It's enjoyable and frames the action and core game play well.

    The core experience:
I started playing on Ranger Difficulty. At first, I was shocked at how hard it seemed to be. I was constantly scrimping for ammo and trying not to get blown to bits. But well, I didn't give up. Instead, I re-adjusted my strategy. It worked. I can't say I am swimming in ammo but as long as you're not going gung ho on everything and everyone you meet and always do a "risk assessment" you will do just fine. (It's worth re-visiting areas to clean out safes as well!)
I think the game is hard but most definitely fair.

    The tech:
I helped kick-start the game but never touched it until it's final release. Perhaps that's the reason for some of the more negative reviews? Hard to say...
Being a game dev myself I've come to the point where I rather wait until something is done so I can enjoy the final experience.
I've spend 14 hours playing so far and the game has been extremely stable. Not a single crash or technical issue, so I'm most happy from that perspective.
Graphics and Audio design are great. They're not high end but they absolutely do the job. I very much love the visual aspect of the game. Audio design also works very well. The only thing that ever freaked me out a bit are the goats. But then, that's intended... Right?

    Overall:
I think it's a very well executed game. I enjoy the encounters, they force you to work on your strategy and think before you shoot. It doesn't need a lot of the modern baggage but instead concentrates on the core game play instead. I like that. Back to the roots and such...

I love finding those little references to it's great predecessors everywhere as well.

So yes. Definitely a good game. It's been way too long since I've had the chance to play a game like this. The only other recent contender worth mentioning would be Halfway. An excellent little gem as well.

-the ability to solve stuff on different ways and your choices actually do matter(well on occasion at least)

The bad: -textures are really bad at times and probably the worst thing is that you actually see your char zoomed up close on char creation makes it just even more obvious

-some balance issue simply to say some weapons are far better then other, now this have more to do with fact that range wins all most of time especially if you play on harder difficulty as you want to kill anything before it comes to you

-certain skills are useful only on few occasion sometimes you will wonder why i wasn't able to do this or that

-save scumming is the thing that you actually want to exploit as it eliminates not that fun RNG which usually wont do much except make you grind for few hours random encounters so you can buy stuff that you actually want

Now what i noticed is that ppl expected from this game fallout clone and this is not one. Brian Fargo stated that in start. Mostly there is no perk system and there isn't even need for one as there is lot of different skills which are only useful if you specialize in them and you don't even get that many skill points per level so your one char can't be good in everything. And there is no need for it either as you control squad (4 rangers) and not single char + 3 other npc that can join your party.

Over all game is still worth its money and its 8/10 for sure. Now it was delayed once already but i get feeling that they should have extended that with more time it could easily be 9/10.

It is annoying equip the item again on the character. Skills like Demolition, Alarm Disarming are a risk to use and will require a lot of save-load sequences in order to handle the situation well. - Old-school cRPG are so rare nowadays and Wasteland 1 was always one of my favourite.

    Cons;
    - So many fights and so little strategy involved, enemy AI is meh...
    - Lack of meaningful choices: open-ended quests are uncommon and mostly leads to flavor-only consequences.
    - A lot of skills feel redundant and artificial (there's 5 different skills for unlocking things, 3 for persuasive dialog,...).
    - Current attributes balance promotes character builds with 2 to 4 dump stats.
    - Ranged weapon balance is terrible: Assault rifles are OP, Sniper and SMG are OK, there's only one good Energy weapon in the entire game, the rest is garbage.
    - There's too much randomness in loot and skill success, savescumming will lead you anywhere.
    - UI is clunky and not user-friendly, too much wasted time in skill usage delays,...
    - Poor optimisation. For example, any activated alarm makes the game unplayable because of lag.
    - After first patch, there's still lots of bugged quests, combat related and inventory management issues (clicking dragging an item fail 2 times out of 3),...

The most serious issues of Wasteland 2 comes from really bad design choices (randomness, artificial skills, balancing issues,...). This game seriously needs a huge re-balancing patch (or modding tools) to live up to its expectations.

GUI is really awful, worst interface decisions ever. 2 lists of character portraits when you open character screen, useless radio call for levelup with same phrases on and on, finding a right camera angle is a total disaster. Some people don't even own the game, let alone played it, yet they write reviews like a champion.

They either praise the game as the new Jesus or they condemn it to be the worst scam ever. This is going on all over metacritic, not just for this game. How can any sane person, who is not retarded and older than 12, rate this game zero or ten? This is not how rating works and defeats the purpose of this website. Roughly half of the 700 reviews here are written by trolls. You people are effectively making this site completely useless - but hey, it's what trolls do... In order to push their own ego, they destroy working systems that decent people created. That goes for all aspects of life, not just gaming and trolls are everywhere, making this planet a bad place to live on. Congratulations.

Wasteland 2 is not a better Fallout 3, but it's a solid, enthralling, postapocalyptic RPG with nice visuals and audio. From a technical point of view, it could use some improvements, but the story and gameplay make up for that. The game is not for the casual Xbox gamer, but for the mature, hardcore gaming enthusiasts who are into turn based combat.

It is not the best game ever, as those 10/10 losers say, but it's also not the worst game of all times, like the 0/10 trolls claim. You people think about what you're doing, because if you keep this up, you'll break yet another system that was working before. It doesn't help anyone. When this website goes down because decent people stop using it, your agenda goes with it.

So good... 25 years later, I'm back in the Wasteland. This game is good enough to stand on its own merits, but its especially great, considering it's one of the longest awaited sequels in game history, if you've played the original back in all its 4 color pixellated text adventure goodness.

Whiners need not apply. The Wasteland isn't a forgiving place. There's not a simple 'I win'

Extremely buggy throwback to the late 90's. First, I love old RPG's like Baldurs Gate, Fallout, and PT. I tried to love this game, but it is too buggy, the technology is too old, and the game, as a whole, has very little character to distinguish it as anything but a cheap, fragile, copy of something great.

The game looks pretty horrible graphically but I only deducted 1 point for that.

The game looks pretty horrible graphically but I only deducted 1 point for that. The real problem is the bugs. Bugs are everywhere, from texture stretching and loading the party outside the playable map area, to disappearing NPC's denying you opportunity to complete a quest properly and frame-rate bombing bringing the game down to 1 frame every 5 seconds. I played nearly 20 hours into the game until a broken quest finally made me give up (NPC Jessie completely disappeared in my game). Clearly, more play testing and bug squashing was in order before the game was released.

On top of all that, the game itself is very poorly optimized. Loading happens often especially on quests where you act as an in-between and loading is insanely slow despite how bad the graphics are. The game actually looks like a 90's game graphically yet it performs worse than a 15 year old game for some reason. When you zoom out to max and rotate, the game actually slows to about 5 fps on my gaming computer (i7 + Radeon 7850).

Since I only played 20 hours, I cannot be 100% sure about story quality but what I have seen so far has been somewhat boring to me. I wont give any spoilers here but I remember a lot more from Fallout 1 than I do from this game and I was just playing it a few hours ago. The characters are just not that interesting, nor is the world or dialog. I did enjoy some of the 90's/80's references but that is not enough to hold interest over long periods of time.

I will play it again once the game is fixed, but we need to score the game based on what we currently have in front of us, and right now, it is a mess. -4 points for the bugs. -1 for bad graphics. -1 for poor optimization.

Wasteland 2 is the sequel of the 1980's CRPG by Brian Fargo and the Fallout guys back when they all worked for EA. Turn based isometric with decent if not overwhelming graphics and an attribute/skill system that again, takes more from Wasteland than it does from Fallout (which I'm guessing would get them sued, since they don't have any rights to Fallout games).

The plot is branching, with areas that one playthrough will not allow you to enter, based on your choices, and your actions have meaningful storyline driven consequences, albeit rather buggy at the moment. Combat is turn based and totally RPG-style (dice rule) but solidly tactical, with the caveat that like in almost every other strategy game, the AI can be rather stupid at times.

Honestly, the zero scores here are utterly absurd, I'd normally give this game an 8-9, with points off for bugs and some rush finish lack-of-polish, but I'm bumping it to 10 just because the haters piled on too thick for an indie title. Yes, this is an indie title, a $3m kickstart does not put it into AAA territory, whose games run in the $50m range nowadays. You get what you pay for, and what you get is a sweet TBRPG throwback game.

It certainly has some flaws, bugs and shortcomings, but they mean nothing compared to the 100 hours long immersive experience that nails you from the start and won't let you go until you're finished. For a week I completely forgot about reality and I was living in the Wasteland, exploring the post-apo world, breathing the radioactive atmosphere. As expected - excellent writing full of interesting characters, various factions, dark sense of humour and tons of quests to do, no stupid quest markers or handholding, but actually good old figuring things out for yourself. Many important choices and moral decisions you have to make. Customizable party of 4 desert rangers plus 3 more companions and even more additional followers that follow you around lets you create unique set of specialists that support one another with their various skills and equipment. I spent 2 hours just creating my party, by that time, some of the newer games would be already over. Tactical turn-based combat ala X-COM with all it's features such as cover system or height advantages is a fun playground for many challenging battles. And the last, but not least - Fantastic audio! Music by Mark Morgan continues in his masterpiece ambient legacy that started in Fallout and sound design is full of beautiful textures and distortions, especially radio messages and broadcasts are a nice touch. I was pleasantly surprised to see the sound credit for Alexander "Deus Ex" Brandon in the opening credits, so basically 2 of my all-time favourite game composers working together on this dream project and it shows, because audio creates atmosphere here even more strongly than visuals, which brings me to the negative part of the review.

In a good RPG, graphics never mattered, hell, Fallout was ugly even back in 1997, but at least it had style and it didn't stop it from being a classic. Nevertheless, there is no way around it - Wasteland 2 is an ugly, badly optimized 3D mess. I blame the Unity engine, this is the 3rd unity engine game I played and they all shared the same problems - ugly visuals, tons of glitches and terrible optimization. What is even worse however is the camera controls and view angles. IF you must go 3D, at least do it properly like Dragon Age for example, where you can rotate the camera the way you want, not just horizontally, and even switch to 3rd person mode that helps you immerse in the world and navigate around the environment that way more smoothly. Here, you are stuck with predefined camera angles that are all wrong, when you zoom in, it's the right angle, but you don't see anything around you as it's to close up, so you zoom out to see more, but it automatically switches to a terrible bird view where you again don't see anything. Navigation is hell in this game and exploration is pain because of that. Unlocking the vertical camera angle movement and disabling that terrible default view would fix it, so hopefully in some future patch. This is not a cosmetic problem it's a critical game design flaw that negatively affects the gameplay and will prevent many new players to enjoy this gem. There are also tons of bugs, quest problems and missing features, such as no option to navigate in local world map. Every other RPG including all the old classics had this, just open the map, click on the other side of the current world and bam, you're there. You cannot do this here, you must manually scroll like an idiot through chaotic environment. Also the fact that the world is totally spammed with countless chests and safeboxes that are trapped with bombs, alarms and locks, forcing you to spend an eternity unlocking them with your skills that take too much time to process only to pick up some useless junk doesn't help the flow of the game either.

But even despite these faults, Wasteland 2 is still the game of the year for me so far and one of the best RPG experiences in recent years, cannot wait for the Red Boots DLC only for 49.99$! 10/10

Little things about combat annoy me, like I can't pause to get a lay of the land before combat actually starts -- and the spacebar to turn group movement on and off. I don't know why the latter keeps causing problems, but I keep forgetting to hit it to move a single character. Maybe group movement shouldn't be default? I don't know. I think that's my own shortcoming, rather than the design.

I love the immediately branching story. Backers wanted a CRPG with choices and that's what they got. The tactical combat is part of it, but it isn't a tactics-first game -- so, it's a bit weaker there. That's fine with me, although it's very easy to wander into a frustratingly difficult battle. But that's life in the wasteland.

As a backer, they provided exactly what I expected. I adore this game.

Essentially choices just feel more "game-ey" than some of the great RPGs like Fallout or KOTOR. Stats are largely not as important as they should be. UI and non combat controls could use some serious sprucing up, there is no need to copy the problems of yesteryear when making a throwback game. I list my humble complains here:

The loot system is a pain. Random-drop makes the game experience unstable. Opening every safe and box provides very little fun. There should be less containers and better loots.

The difference of weapon strength between every tiers is very queer. If only there are several characteristic weapons of similar power, player can combat with more play styles.

The skill success rate system is just very troublesome. If the game allows saving and loading, the check should better set as a threshold of all or none. Asking player to ponder for a proper action before an object may be funny in 1988 but not now.

The 3 kinds of speech check make confusing in my skill-picking but not as much enjoyment in doing those speech.

The maps are way too wide thus make too many running, as many user commented.
    The mini-maps are irrelevant.
Tactic component of the battle is too thin and covers are difficult to use. The combat is not interesting.
The story of NPCs are either very short or coming as a big mass in a very short moment. I was hoping a storytelling that allow their story to be discovered step by step.

Be warned though, it's a hard game and you will have to restart many times but that is just part of the experience. The game isn't broken, but it's not easy and the developers aren't going to hold your hand and guide you through the game. You will make mistakes, and you should be able to learn from them and improve on your mistakes next time round.

You can't save everybody, you will have to make hard decisions and live by your decisions. The game is 50-80 hours long (for a single playthrough, but you will want to do many playthroughs) and it features multiple endings. You get to decide your future, and you get to decide whether the Desert Rangers will be a force for good, or just another band of outlaws.

It's not Fallout, so down-voting it because it's not another game is really retarded.

I played the beta for an hour or two, but did not want to really get into it until the game was finally released on Friday. Since then I've played it every single moment that I've had available (8+ hours since then).

All in this game is focused to put us in the post-nuclear situation and the game itself is incredibly complex, all what you see at the detailed character tab is reflected in the entire game so you need to choose a carefully balanced group, but even with 4 characters you can't have all at the same time so each bullet will and the final sensation will be an unforgettable experience.

After playing the beta i was worried over the final style/look this game would have. Having now logged about 10 hours in (having barely scratched the surface, it seems) I can safely say I am glad I was wrong.

The combat takes a bit of getting used to, but the satisfaction of engaging a mob of pod people and luring them back into the range of your Sniper; waiting to ambush them on the second floor of a burnt out building (rambling, I know) is immense.

So I guess I'd recommend this game then.

P.S. I have seen some reviews criticizing the 'Day 1 DLC at $50!' Yelling about how this is outrageous and blah blah blah. My advice would be to click on the offer. You might be pleasantly surprised. ^^

This is a game for the thinkers, the appreciators of a great storyline, and the strategists. Those who aren't afraid of difficult fights, and the permanence of loss. The graphics aren't special, and a lot of the character script is not voice acted, but the cost cutting in these cosmetic departments has allowed for more resources to be spent in making this game a long lasting adventure with great depth, role playing potential, and strategic options.

No wonder Ken Levine praised this game. Thanks InExile! Worth every penny and more!

Graphics aren't pretty, combat could be deeper and there's a few bugs. That's the bad out of the way. The combat is actually fun in my opinion, the only thing it lacks from Fallout 1/2 is aimed shots, but it makes up for this with the cover system and ambushing. The writing is great, and the voice acting is usually decent (there's some dodgy examples). The story starts off a bit slow butGraphics aren't pretty, combat could be deeper and there's a few bugs. There's some very memorable characters, and your followers often have interesting things to say about the environment and your decisions.

Yeah, the game is a bit divisive - I think some people expected Xcom, and others Fallout 1/2, all games with much higher budgets than this. Even Divinity: Original Sin had a budget of around 10-12 million USD (the Kickstarter was for a product to show investors) unlike Wasteland 2's 6 million (including Early Access sales). But a lot of love went into the game.

The skill system is a bit much at first, and some skills could probably be rolled together to streamline, but it's cool having a bunch of different specialists in your team. The attributes could also probably have more of an effect on your skills, but the current system allows for more open roleplaying (e.g. a guy with no charisma still being a kiss ass, it's possible).

Overall, it's a great CRPG in the vein of WL1 and the original Fallouts. It probably still needs a bit of work patch-wise, and some design decisions may not appeal to everyone, but I think if you're into the older CRPGs you're in for a great time.

Like Shadowrun it's awesome if you're a fan of the genre.
Then you will be blindly in love and can overlook graphic and balancing issues. It's your 9.5/10 and you love it!
If you are only mildly interested in the genre it's a tough deal. You should read up on the Internet before playing on how to make your character "not suck" and you'll have to be willing to spend 20-30 hours until

I'm not sure everyone has that time or wants to invest it.

To conclude: a very slow game with many small issues that could have been solved better, but if you're willing to overlook these it's a diamond you won't find anywhere else!

Very controversial feelings. In the beginning the game is very promising but the more you advance the more you feel that something is wrong. While 1st part of the game feels all right, the more you become closer to LA part, the more game feels unfinished and repetitive.

If not for nostalgia, this game would not be rated half as highly.

    - The Unity engine overhead is huge, make this a slow, bloated game to run. - The game balance is awful, with half the stats being ignorable. - The weapon balance is terrible, with assault rifles being far superior to any other weapon options. - The fighting tactics sit in a no-man's land where there are not enough

    - Some zones are so clearly better developed, in terms of graphics and content, due to their use in advanced promos (eg Ag Centre), whilst other lack sufficient detail to either carry the ambiance or even engage the story

I have been eagerly waiting since the kickstarter to play the full version, but it is a terrible disappointment. If you want the burst of nostalgia for turn-based, group RPG play, then it will scratch an itch, but on its own merits, Wasteland 2 is a weak offer.

A fantastic game true to its heritage.

Dark humor, great plot and well tailored characters.

If you liked the now classic, fallout 1,2 and tactics and Divinity: Original sin then you will enjoy this.

Needs more random encounter variance rather then an endless stream of raiders/wild animals. And some minor tweaks to some of the mission instructions.

If you love fallout 1 and 2 this is a game for you! It has all the things you loved from those games, Brian Fargo once again made a gem to remember. I hope there will be another sequel to this game!

Wasteland 2, for the most part, provides everything that its Kickstarter backers and fans of the genre are looking for.

If you're a fan of this style of game and have played the best recent releases, look behind you. Because that's where Wasteland 2 is going to be.

The epitome of old-school that doesn't reek of decay. There are a few bumps along the road, but oh, is it a road worth taking. [Issue#246]
