WARHAMMER: VERMINTIDE 2 is a hack & slash fan's dream come true. 3D hacking & slashing does not get any better than this. The only downside is, it's co-op. I would prefer a single player version of the game, but at least you can enter a private session and the three other characters get played by bots. These act fairly well - I had no issues with pathfinding or the AI in general.

You have the choice between 5 characters: a soldier, a dwarven and an elven ranger, a witch hunter and a mage, each of which has another 3 sub classes that unlock with levels. I preferred the DLC Grail Knight who is heavily armored but may not use any ranged weapons. But what character you choose comes down to personal preference.
The game is better balanced than it's predecessor which sucked if you played with only bots. The AI has been improved significantly and being grappled by one of the special enemies now no longer is a death sentence. As a matter of fact on the easiest difficulty setting this game is playable without much tactics - simple hack & slash with the 3 other bots holding their own.
The graphics and fantastic, each map is very detailed and looks like an actual medieval town or castle complete with narrow cobble stone alleys. The architecture is just amazing! Weapons feel real and have superb feedback. Butchering hordes of ratmen feels like the lawnmower scene in Peter Jackson's Braindead with blood and guts flying all over - it makes DOOM look like a kiddie game. The environments look breathtaking and nail the WARHAMMER grittiness. Also, the enemy design is quite good with a good variety of ratmen and well more ratmen and then even more ratmen. OK, there are also chaos troopers, but the main focus is ratmen (Skaven).
The sound and music are really good, too. swords or hammers striking armor actually sounding like it rather than someone beating a trash can with a stick, but what steals the show is the voice acting: my favorites are Tim Bentinck as the witch hunter and Alix Wilton Regan as the elven ranger.
WARHAMMER: VERMINTIDE 2 is not a typical RPG in the style of SKYRIM. Think of it as skirmishes in the style of the WARHAMMER board games: you start a mission that has a clear objective. The map is NOT open world, they are maze-like and areas are blocked off, which is not always done in the best way, but open world would not have worked here. (You still can get lost and exploration is definitely possible and rewarded). It plays like LEFT 4 DEAD but with medieval weapons, and I personally prefer VERMINTIDE 2 to any of the LEFT FOR DEAD games.
Character customization is limited but it's there: said 3 sub-classes per character, then there are Talents, 3 of which are unlocked every 5 levels up to level 30. Per tier only one may be active at any given time.

If you don't know what that means, there's an AI director that watches the player (or players) and adjusts the flow of enemies or adds specialized units to add challenge pending on difficulty level and modifiers you acquire through the game. You slash and shoot enemies with a decent variety of weapons with abilities that range from crowd control, armor piercing and shield breaking. Weapons and equipable items have power ratings and in some cases traits that enhance your abilities whether it be your attack, defense, health, and/or movement.

if you played the first one, what seems to be new is character sub-classes, level/experience buffs within those classes, as well as at least one passive and one active special ability. That means each of the four characters has three variants each with their own unique ability and buff sets, and no, you don't have to worry about leveling each one, meaning if you're at level 12 you'll have access to choose from those sub-classes but you can also pick traits respective to your level for each one, in this case (level 12) you'll have access to two skill tiers, of which you can pick one of three options that will affect your traits in a variety of ways. Players sub-class abilities range in a variety of ways, generally, some will kill enemies (such as seeking arrows/fireballs and attacks that move through multiple enemies in a row, however, some abilities have a range of effects that break engagements and provide an additional buff for a period of time.

The levels are all well made leaving room for labyrinthian exploration but manages to funnel you in the right direction every time. I think the levels also have a lot of character as well, each level belies an unspoken narrative (though you can get some lore talking to the old lady by the portal after each successful mission). Sometimes you're traversing a village that appears recently ransacked, littered with mutilated bodies that depict all kinds of horrors, another level will have you exploring dwarven ruins now inhabited by chaos and vermin, another will have you explore a beautiful forest that hides long forgotten elven ruins. All are well designed with minimal areas for players to hole up.

Difficulty levels seem to spike in the beginning but the more you play it gets easier, in part because you always gain XP for leveling up and you generally get better loot respective to your level (and challenge level). You get more loot for successfully passing each mission which can get better depending on whether you look for Tomes, Grimoires, and "Loot Dice" which can multiply the benefits of those rewards (which means you're more likely to get rarer gear with special abilities.

Do you like a particular weapon, and or trinket? there's a forge to level it up, re-roll properties, or straight up craft from blueprints you progressively acquire the more you play, of course, you'll have to break down items in your inventory to get materials to do all that.

Great game, look forward to expansions, also beware of Assassins and Hookrats, and **** Bile Trolls.

This game is better than I could have imagined. It pretty much takes everything from the first one, makes it all better, and pairs it with somehow even more engaging combat that just feels so right. It was priced just right and they improved upon everything I didn't like about the first one.

I have an i7 3770k with an R9 290X(Lesser specs than what they supposedly have) and I can consistently get 90-120 fps even in large battles. I also have friends with even lower specs than myself that haven't had any issues with performance once they got into the proper preset for their equipment.

I was concerned when I saw the same hero characters would be returning but the addition of sub classes, skill trees and abilities makes for a much wider range of play styles than before.

The loot is acquired in a much fairer way. I'm not sure about just having a 'power' stat but there's plenty of extra effects and buffs that you get with non common weapons.

There's the same number of missions (13) but this time each level is fully fleshed out so there's no glorified horde mode missions. It's a matter of the same amount of content on paper but in reality these's quite a bit more.

A perhaps underappreciated area of improvement is the increase in number of 'non-special' enemy types. As well as adding enemies like the warpfire thrower the game adds lots of subtly different enemies that deepen the melee combat. For example, mixing in plague monks, berserkers and shielded enemies into the horde forces you to develop your tactics beyond just swinging an axe at a large mob. This also makes the ranged combat more tactical as instead of just thinning out a horde you can target the more high level threats and avoid wasting ammo on shielded enemies.

Blocking also seems to be done much better this time round, especially when blocking multiple smaller opponents.

There's a couple of bugs, mainly to do with bosses getting stuck sometimes but it's not much of an issue and they can fix a lot of that later down the line. Performance is good for me and only dips when there's a ridiculous amount of enemies on screen.

The graphics are great but more importantly the art design is a lot more interesting and varied this time around. There's a lot of nice vistas and lighting effects.

The community is also pretty nice, not met anyone who was a prick yet. They could add short cuts for certain shout outs such as 'group up' which would be useful in quick play.

Overall a pretty damn good game and easily worth the price imo. Just be aware that the game is designed to be replayed multiple times just like the first one. There's also little story, it's just about the combat really although there is a good amount of voice lines, environmental story telling and text pieces that provide some good context should you wish to look. Just don't expect the last of us. I'd happily pay full price for the game but the lower price tag makes it a lot easier to convince friends to try it out which is great for such a co-op focused game.

Careers are much appreciated for variety and enemy variety is a huge plus over the original. However, the one area the sequel steps back in is the crafting. Crafting on launch of Vermintide 1 was also mediocre but over the years Fatshark added some extra options and tweaks that gave much needed improvements. Those options and tweaks are gone in the sequel. While it's still more bearable than VT1 release, it's disappointing to see a step back accompanied by so many steps forward.

The game is also a bit unclear about certain mechanics that become quickly necessary to survive it's sometimes brutal difficulty, even on low settings. As an example, you can block while reviving a fallen party member in order to not get knocked out of reviving by mob attacks. For people who prefer more solo experiences, this is probably not the game for you. Even as a solo player grouping with randoms, you will need to play with and around your team to succeed in missions. Just a few play sessions will show players this.

Overall, I love this game. Most of my nitpicks are simply that, me searching for negatives in a game I adore. Especially for a 30$ price tag, this is worth your time if anything about the game sounds like you might have an interest in it.

I had pretty low expectations picking this title up as I never played Vermintide 1 and didn't expect much for $30 but I must say even if I went in with high expectations I think this game would have exceeded them. It is being compared to Left4Dead but in medieval times and I'd say that's accurate. I'm having lots of fun playing it and it never fails to provide a challenge.

One thing I really wanted to highlight with this game though is loot boxes. All other game studios should take note of how these guys implemented loot boxes. Essentially you play through missions and at the end of successfully completing each mission you get a loot box. How good this loot box is will then increase based on how well you completed the level as well as level difficulty (recruit, veteran, champion, etc). You get a bonus for quick play, collecting tomes (3 per level which increase your loot crate value by 50%, 100% gets you to next level of loot box), collecting grims (2 per level at 75% each but reduces your max health by 25% per book for the rest of the level making completion more difficult), collecting loot dies (25% and placed randomly in the level) and a small bonus ranging from anywhere from 10% to 100% (not positive on these exact values for the bonus though). These loot boxes then upgrade through tiers (commoners, merchant, soldier, emperor). You then get three items per loot box. No real money is involved and it is all earned through grinding in the game. It keeps it fresh, fun, and exciting while not taking any hit to your wallet. I'm really hoping this is something I see more of from games in the future.

In the end I highly recommend picking this game up as for $30 it has a tremendous amount of value. If you are into the hack and slash co-op pve against hordes of monsters, this is a no brainer.

If I were to compare Vermintide II to other titles, I would choose Left 4 Dead and Diablo, with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic coming in a close third place due to how combat feels. The game will eventually wear you down with its repetitiveness, because replaying scenarios is embedded in its design, but before it happens you’ll spend dozens of fun hours with it. [05/2018, p.42]
