The base mechanics are fine. They're passable. What else could they be when your ripping off an established formula whole hog. Here's everything about vermintide that sucks.

-Artificial difficulty. You are a slow, fat, legless slug that must drag your misshapen heap of a body to and fro in blatant defiance of gods will. Your enemies trained their whole lives with cirque du soleil. Each of you can usually one shot the other at higher difficulties, especially if you pick up the books that cut your health by 66%. This game isn't difficult like spinning plates or hitting a three pointer, it's difficult like chewing gravel.

-Unavoidable damage. Even playing properly you will almost certainly take a lot of damage. This is especially irksome during boss fights.

-One way no return drops. Don't ever get caught on top of one alone because if you go down because a special spawned on top of you and grabbed you, your team has no way of rezzing you because for some reason you can't crawl in last stand.

-The playable characters. I mainly play kerillian, and i wan't to rip her sarcastic, quipy little tongue out of her smug **** face. And then I want to do the same with the rest of the reprobates whose skulls I inhabit. There is no way to just mute the characters voices either, because fat shark has nothing but contempt for their players and you're gonna experience every line of dialog every game or you can go **** yourself.

-Specials. 3/5? specials have the ability to grab the player through guard and pin them, slowly draining health. A special **** you to the assassin which can leap over a hundred metres and often from behind cover. Why not just roll a die every few minutes to decide if the player should continue or restart.

-Item crafting. The only draw of this game is grinding for 300 gear score, and fat shark knows this, so they dribble and drip items at a slugs pace. After getting up to about 150 or so, don't expect to get any usable gear in any given play session, because you likely won't. Just a small mound of tinder to burn for materials.

-Tomes. The game doesn't reward individual skill as much as it does meta knowledge about the 5 collectible books on every level, often hidden in obnoxiously difficult to find places. They never move and completing the level without at least 3-4 is almost pointless, so get ready to study a wikia to make sure you arnt pissing up a tree for half an hour.

-Toxic community. Even though there is no benefit to getting the most kills, kill whoring is rampant, even if it means shooting your own teammates. Even if it means taking damage yourself. I also distinctly remember being called **** retarded for not knowing where all the books were on a level i had played once.

-Samey levels. If I ever made a game where there are only 16 small maps, I would at least make sure they were highly distinct from one another. This is not the case. Not that there is any story worth getting invested in (or at all), but the writers couldn't come up with 16 different objectives for you to complete, and 4 are already just crappy boss fights. There's like 3 missions that revolve around ringing a bell.

-Story. It's like a really god awful super friends or something. There's a portal, you **** around for 15 levels, then you break the portal. There's no development, no character arcs, no point. Why is this even a warhammer game? to cynically cash in on an established fan base and make the L4D skin suit you're wearing seem more appealing by stretching it grotesquely around the frame of another established franchise? Maybe all of warhammer is thinly veiled plagiarism covered in slimy dog **** i don't know, I've never seen any of it so maybe it is.

Bottom line. This game is fun like smoking crack is fun. First you have to blow a guy for 20 dollars, then you have to not get stabbed knocking on your dealers door because he lives in a bad neighborhood, then you have to make a stem out of a nip bottle, then smoking it tastes like battery acid and burns like poison, but after its all done you get high for a few minutes before you have to start over again. That is this game. An indeterminate amount of suffering then a cathartic high when you get to open that golden loot box. For some people that's a game. To me that's a destructive personality trait.

WARHAMMER: VERMINTIDE 2 is a hack & slash fan's dream come true. 3D hacking & slashing does not get any better than this. The only downside is, it's co-op. I would prefer a single player version of the game, but at least you can enter a private session and the three other characters get played by bots. These act fairly well - I had no issues with pathfinding or the AI in general.

I would prefer a single player version of the game, but at least you can enter a private session and the three other characters get played by bots. These act fairly well - I had no issues with pathfinding or the AI in general.
You have the choice between 5 characters: a soldier, a dwarven and an elven ranger, a witch hunter and a mage, each of which has another 3 sub classes that unlock with levels. I preferred the DLC Grail Knight who is heavily armored but may not use any ranged weapons. But what character you choose comes down to personal preference.
The game is better balanced than it's predecessor which sucked if you played with only bots. The AI has been improved significantly and being grappled by one of the special enemies now no longer is a death sentence. As a matter of fact on the easiest difficulty setting this game is playable without much tactics - simple hack & slash with the 3 other bots holding their own.
The graphics and fantastic, each map is very detailed and looks like an actual medieval town or castle complete with narrow cobble stone alleys. The architecture is just amazing! Weapons feel real and have superb feedback. Butchering hordes of ratmen feels like the lawnmower scene in Peter Jackson's Braindead with blood and guts flying all over - it makes DOOM look like a kiddie game. The environments look breathtaking and nail the WARHAMMER grittiness. Also, the enemy design is quite good with a good variety of ratmen and well more ratmen and then even more ratmen. OK, there are also chaos troopers, but the main focus is ratmen (Skaven).
The sound and music are really good, too. swords or hammers striking armor actually sounding like it rather than someone beating a trash can with a stick, but what steals the show is the voice acting: my favorites are Tim Bentinck as the witch hunter and Alix Wilton Regan as the elven ranger.
WARHAMMER: VERMINTIDE 2 is not a typical RPG in the style of SKYRIM. Think of it as skirmishes in the style of the WARHAMMER board games: you start a mission that has a clear objective. The map is NOT open world, they are maze-like and areas are blocked off, which is not always done in the best way, but open world would not have worked here. (You still can get lost and exploration is definitely possible and rewarded). It plays like LEFT 4 DEAD but with medieval weapons, and I personally prefer VERMINTIDE 2 to any of the LEFT FOR DEAD games.
Character customization is limited but it's there: said 3 sub-classes per character, then there are Talents, 3 of which are unlocked every 5 levels up to level 30. Per tier only one may be active at any given time.

If you don't know what that means, there's an AI director that watches the player (or players) and adjusts the flow of enemies or adds specialized units to add challenge pending on difficulty level and modifiers you acquire through the game. You slash and shoot enemies with a decent variety of weapons with abilities that range from crowd control, armor piercing and shield breaking. Weapons and equipable items have power ratings and in some cases traits that enhance your abilities whether it be your attack, defense, health, and/or movement.

if you played the first one, what seems to be new is character sub-classes, level/experience buffs within those classes, as well as at least one passive and one active special ability. That means each of the four characters has three variants each with their own unique ability and buff sets, and no, you don't have to worry about leveling each one, meaning if you're at level 12 you'll have access to choose from those sub-classes but you can also pick traits respective to your level for each one, in this case (level 12) you'll have access to two skill tiers, of which you can pick one of three options that will affect your traits in a variety of ways. Players sub-class abilities range in a variety of ways, generally, some will kill enemies (such as seeking arrows/fireballs and attacks that move through multiple enemies in a row, however, some abilities have a range of effects that break engagements and provide an additional buff for a period of time.

The levels are all well made leaving room for labyrinthian exploration but manages to funnel you in the right direction every time. I think the levels also have a lot of character as well, each level belies an unspoken narrative (though you can get some lore talking to the old lady by the portal after each successful mission). Sometimes you're traversing a village that appears recently ransacked, littered with mutilated bodies that depict all kinds of horrors, another level will have you exploring dwarven ruins now inhabited by chaos and vermin, another will have you explore a beautiful forest that hides long forgotten elven ruins. All are well designed with minimal areas for players to hole up.

Difficulty levels seem to spike in the beginning but the more you play it gets easier, in part because you always gain XP for leveling up and you generally get better loot respective to your level (and challenge level). You get more loot for successfully passing each mission which can get better depending on whether you look for Tomes, Grimoires, and "Loot Dice" which can multiply the benefits of those rewards (which means you're more likely to get rarer gear with special abilities.

Do you like a particular weapon, and or trinket? there's a forge to level it up, re-roll properties, or straight up craft from blueprints you progressively acquire the more you play, of course, you'll have to break down items in your inventory to get materials to do all that.

Great game, look forward to expansions, also beware of Assassins and Hookrats, and **** Bile Trolls.

Disclaimer: I haven't played the first game in the series, so I'm not sure how much better this game is compared to its prequel. This is an unbiased, genuine review of this game by a casual gamer.

After beating each map on the lowest difficulty with a mixture of a few buddies and random players, my impression of the game is that it is essentially an L4D2 clone, but with a strong emphasis on melee combat and a lot of "left-click" button mashing.

Anyone who rates the game 9+ is likely bloating their vote since the game really isn't that special. A lot of the elements of the game were copied or adapted from L4D2. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep myself playing this game since I've already gotten tired of L4D2 after pouring in hundreds of hours into it, but I'll see if playing at higher difficulties will make it more interesting.

This game comes with a leveling and equipment system that requires you to put in a little effort to properly gear up your heroes to make maps easier to play. This is probably the only factor that differentiates the game from L4D2, but it is extremely simplified and nowhere near RPG-level complex.

Compared to L4D2 where you would play through long campaigns consisting of several maps in each,
Vermintide 2's maps are designed to be played individually and rewards are granted at the end of each one. This makes sessions a lot shorter and quicker to digest. Each map (with the exception of the final one) lasts roughly around 20-30 minutes, but that is a loose estimate.

The maps also contain bonus items you can find which grant an EXP boost at the end of the map and promote a little bit of exploring. But they're always in the same spots, so once you know where they are, it's no mystery anymore.

From what I feel so far, the "real game" only begins once you've beaten all of the maps on the lowest difficulty and have progressed to the next one, when more strategy becomes necessary and you can't just Rambo your way through the maps. I would say that this mimics L4D2 in terms of difficulty level. If you've played the Expert level maps in L4D2, you would know what I'm talking about.

Playing at higher difficulties or playing "Heroic Deeds" (which are similar to modifier maps you find and play in a game like Path of Exile) is a lot more interesting than just grinding through maps. Mistakes are a lot more punishing and you can't afford to die too much.

(Keep in mind that there is no PvP mode in this game. It is strictly co-op only, at least, for the moment.)

Ultimately, the only thing you're doing in this game is playing through 13 different maps to grind EXP and upgrade your gear in order to, well, replay them again, but easier. I suppose it's like replaying L4D2 campaigns over and over again, but at least you can feel good about getting better gear and playing harder maps.

Some of the reviews here and on Steam complained about the matchmaking and how toxic players or hosts exist, but I certainly didn't get that vibe. If anything, the players I've queued up with have been pretty friendly and cooperative so far.

For the time being, I think 7 is a fair rating for this game, and the $30 USD price tag is a decent launch price for this game (although it could be a little cheaper).

In essence: Vermintide 2 doesn't really bring anything new to the cooperative horde-killing table, but it certainly offers new environments to those who have gotten tired of playing L4D2. If you desire some fresh, casual co-op fun with your buddies, you've found it, but expect a lot of repetition again.

I'm not sure why but I was sceptical about this game but every reservation I had has been put to rest. I was expecting a decent game that was largely a rehash of the first but it is truly improved in both obvious and subtle ways.

I was concerned when I saw the same hero characters would be returning but the addition of sub classes, skill trees and abilities makes for a much wider range of play styles than before.

The loot is acquired in a much fairer way. I'm not sure about just having a 'power' stat but there's plenty of extra effects and buffs that you get with non common weapons.

There's the same number of missions (13) but this time each level is fully fleshed out so there's no glorified horde mode missions. It's a matter of the same amount of content on paper but in reality these's quite a bit more.

A perhaps underappreciated area of improvement is the increase in number of 'non-special' enemy types. As well as adding enemies like the warpfire thrower the game adds lots of subtly different enemies that deepen the melee combat. For example, mixing in plague monks, berserkers and shielded enemies into the horde forces you to develop your tactics beyond just swinging an axe at a large mob. This also makes the ranged combat more tactical as instead of just thinning out a horde you can target the more high level threats and avoid wasting ammo on shielded enemies.

Blocking also seems to be done much better this time round, especially when blocking multiple smaller opponents.

There's a couple of bugs, mainly to do with bosses getting stuck sometimes but it's not much of an issue and they can fix a lot of that later down the line. Performance is good for me and only dips when there's a ridiculous amount of enemies on screen.

The graphics are great but more importantly the art design is a lot more interesting and varied this time around. There's a lot of nice vistas and lighting effects.

The community is also pretty nice, not met anyone who was a prick yet. They could add short cuts for certain shout outs such as 'group up' which would be useful in quick play.

Overall a pretty damn good game and easily worth the price imo. Just be aware that the game is designed to be replayed multiple times just like the first one. There's also little story, it's just about the combat really although there is a good amount of voice lines, environmental story telling and text pieces that provide some good context should you wish to look. Just don't expect the last of us. I'd happily pay full price for the game but the lower price tag makes it a lot easier to convince friends to try it out which is great for such a co-op focused game.

Careers are much appreciated for variety and enemy variety is a huge plus over the original. However, the one area the sequel steps back in is the crafting. Crafting on launch of Vermintide 1 was also mediocre but over the years Fatshark added some extra options and tweaks that gave much needed improvements. Those options and tweaks are gone in the sequel. While it's still more bearable than VT1 release, it's disappointing to see a step back accompanied by so many steps forward.

The game is also a bit unclear about certain mechanics that become quickly necessary to survive it's sometimes brutal difficulty, even on low settings. As an example, you can block while reviving a fallen party member in order to not get knocked out of reviving by mob attacks. For people who prefer more solo experiences, this is probably not the game for you. Even as a solo player grouping with randoms, you will need to play with and around your team to succeed in missions. Just a few play sessions will show players this.

Overall, I love this game. Most of my nitpicks are simply that, me searching for negatives in a game I adore. Especially for a 30$ price tag, this is worth your time if anything about the game sounds like you might have an interest in it.

I started this game with no big hopes. It just seemed like a fun hack and slash. After a half hour I noticed I was playing Left 4 dead. It's actually the same game but then with RPG elements in it.

This game is awesome! Found something new to keep me busy for a while.

Well, I have over 500 hours into Vermintide 1, and pre-ordered the Vermintide 2 because 1 was so good.

Well, it turns out that the 2nd game in the series was very rushed, they put in a very bad anticheat system just days before release, which has not only broken the game for a lot of people (they cant launch the game, it crashes, it plays a map until the end of the map then crashes leaving the player with nothing, no XP, no stones, no dust, nothing at all), but it also introduced severe lag in the game.
I have a heck of a gaming system (I7 5930k, Titan X 12gb, GTX580 as dedicated Physx card, 16gb ddr4 memory, 2560x1440 144hz monitor), and the game went from 70 to 100fps, all the way down to 30 to 60's fps. It is poorly optimized right now, and never should have been released. Even the developers themselves said they wish they had another 3 months to a year to finish it.
It is very hard for newcomers, casual players, or even midlevel players to play, as they removed the 'Easy' , 'Normal' and 'Hard' options of the 1st game, and start players out on what is essentially 'Nightmare' from the 1st game, and it gets much harder (3 more levels after the 'Recruit' which ir really 'Nightmare' difficulty).
If you like dying over and over and over and over and over, and never finishing a map, until you get enough experience to get a loot box that may or may not contain a good weapon, then this is your kind of game!
Throw in an Anti-Cheat system that is as bad as or worse than Securom, Starforce, and Sony's music DRM, (at the very last minute mind you, mere days before actual release) and you have a recipe for disaster.
The gameplay is VERY geared towards consoles (but why is it so hard then?), as there iis blur on EVERYTHING, and you cannot turn some of it off (although they do have a great selection of options for everything else, including other viddeo options) compared to the 1st game. The art direction they went with is part Vermintide 1, and part cartoonish look (they reused assets from V1, and the new enemies dont look like the rats, they look more cartoonish).
The gameplay is a tossup. I personally love Vermintide 1's gameplay, as it is very crisp, the momentum is just about right for the fast pace of the game, and everything just 'fits' with everything else. Vermintide 2, on the other hand, feels laggy, clumsy, and way overhanded with the forward momentum of even just a single handed blade or axe..
The game is not jump in and play, its jump in and grind and grind and grind until you get enough XP to get a loot box that may have a good weapon or charm in it, until you can win 1 map to get another few loot boxes, until you can then beat the 2nd map, and grind until you get another few loot boxes and grind and grind and grind a single map over and over and over until you can beat the next map, unless you get lucky and the new enemy spawn engine does not spawn much of anything and you just walk to the maps exit, which is not rewarding at all, but welcome if you lose 15 games in a row.
I think the leveling system in V2 ruined the game that was V1. Instead of building upon what was so successful, they totally changed the gameplay to be very heavy RPG (to a FPS only pplayer). No longer can you play whatever weapon you want. No, now you have to unlock characters as you go along, and guess what? You get to play them from level 1 AGAIN! And grind and grind and grind, just like the 1st time.
they messed with a great game too much, and made it something I personally dont want to play anymore.
I will stick with Vermintide 1, and see what they do with Vermintide 3, IF there is ever a Vermintide 3 after this debacle.
I am sad to write this review, as I love the 1st game.
But, Vermintide 2 just is not ready to release, and has strayed too far from the formula that made it great to begin with.

Playing at the start in easy (recruit) mode is actually not easy. It feels you play in "hard" It's not problem for me as a regular player. But for some new players who meet with this game that will make them to find this game as if ugly. There is balance need for difficulty levels.

Common issue is that game is always crushing when you try to start game at the launcher. I found solution in hard way. I actually ripped apart my windows .. lol. And I found out that you have to update every ****** of components in your windows. Even I was able to play many better games like AC origins etc. without updating anything that I have no issue with them in my previous windows settings. So, I wonder if Fatshark works with Microsoft... lol ... First time I see a game push you to upgrade your all windows(10) stuff. Actually it was all-ready updated but seems somethings were missing. So, re setup my OS and re updates which is fixed it.

So, I don't have to be gonna request any refund for a cheap game. But I also do not recommend this game to play.

The game is lots of fun, even better than the first one. Sure, there were (and probably still are) some bugs, but the developer is spending time and fixing them, so that's cool too. Also, yes, some parts are hard, sometimes you play with other people who suck, but a lot of time it's pretty great fun. I've put almost 40 hours into this game so far and I look forward to playing more.

The developers themselves even have gone as far as harassing and ridiculing paying customers for their honest criticism of the terrible direction the game is heading. They purposely deactivated reviews for their Winds of Magic "expansion" so no one could warn anyone on how terribly buggy and overpriced it was with little to no new content. The majority of the "new" content was rehashed maps that then were cut into smaller pieces called "weaves" and the "new" weapons were just existing weapons already in the game but given to different heroes.

The developers are a fraud. They promised to give us dedicated servers on launch then waited 2 months before telling people they just "couldn't" do it. That's bait and switch.

They also repeatedly promised and reassured that there will be NO micro-transactions and, yet, they are now planning on releasing a "cosmetic" shop where you buy crappy recolored skins you already have and hats that mostly all look identical to each other.

Fatshark is nothing more than liars and criminals. The game doesn't play well because they use an outdated and discontinued engine.

Vermintide 2 went from 70k players on launch to a measly 2k players during prime time. That says it all.

For all the comparisons to L4D2, there is almost no strategy involved to how you play this game. On top of that, the graphics and game itself are kind of glitchy, where you will swing and kill 3 enemies, but miss two enemies that have sunk partway into the ground for some reason, before the game floats them back up to be standing on the ground.

Overall, it's amusing for a little while, but not worth much in the end.

You are essentially getting a AAA game with no micro transactions and no further need to spend additional money to enjoy it which is quite refreshing in this day of age for gaming. It is being compared to Left4Dead but in medieval times and I'd say that's accurate. I'm having lots of fun playing it and it never fails to provide a challenge.

One thing I really wanted to highlight with this game though is loot boxes. All other game studios should take note of how these guys implemented loot boxes. Essentially you play through missions and at the end of successfully completing each mission you get a loot box. How good this loot box is will then increase based on how well you completed the level as well as level difficulty (recruit, veteran, champion, etc). You get a bonus for quick play, collecting tomes (3 per level which increase your loot crate value by 50%, 100% gets you to next level of loot box), collecting grims (2 per level at 75% each but reduces your max health by 25% per book for the rest of the level making completion more difficult), collecting loot dies (25% and placed randomly in the level) and a small bonus ranging from anywhere from 10% to 100% (not positive on these exact values for the bonus though). These loot boxes then upgrade through tiers (commoners, merchant, soldier, emperor). You then get three items per loot box. No real money is involved and it is all earned through grinding in the game. It keeps it fresh, fun, and exciting while not taking any hit to your wallet. I'm really hoping this is something I see more of from games in the future.

In the end I highly recommend picking this game up as for $30 it has a tremendous amount of value. If you are into the hack and slash co-op pve against hordes of monsters, this is a no brainer.

So eventually, i was able to start the game and play one session. Gameplay was very chaotic and didn't seem to require much skill - for example, you don't have to aim precisely and your main weapon doesn't have limited ammo like in L4D. You just run around clicking left mouse button, most of the time - quite boring, if you ask me.

After that game, i got some loot crates which i tried to open. First crate made my computer reset, second one hanged the game. Tried to start the game two more times, but i got connection to server error once, and game hanged at loading screen the second time. At this point i'm done with this piece of sotware art, and have to remeber never to buy anything form Fatshark again.

Just tanking damage, can't dodge in the tiny area it spawned in, and no weaknesses beyond just slugging it out like an MMO fight.

This is like you described Valve's masterpiece series to somebody and they really **** it up between the A and B. For god's sake, lootcrates. And yes, the levels and environments are all the samey. Just see what everyone else has to say about this that isn't a solid 10, they are mostly right.

I'll keep it short- the worst part about Vermintide 2 is the untapped potential that could make it a critically-acclaimed masterpiece. Most professional critics are blinded by the fact that they only have less than 10 hours in the game- which is honestly the best part as everything still feels new. This co-op FPS suffers hugely from player attrition due to a lack of content and abysmal DLC with laughable cosmetics. To give an example, one "rare" cosmetic in the game is a complete copy of the base helmet for the character, except a piece of metal in the front is a square rather than a diamond.

All Fatshark needs to do is create more varied weapons, add at least ~10 cosmetics for each class (with color variants), one more fully developed character (halfling, please), more interesting ultimate abilities (such as teleportation, an AOE heal over time, etc) and add about 3-4 new maps. It goes without saying, they also need to do some heavy bug-fixing and add dedicated servers. If they were to provide all of that in the next three or four free updates, then the game would be in a fantastic spot.

loot system is a bit annoying but at least they give you chest on completing a level so it's don't get too annoying to get loot and you get a lot of resources that you can scrap to make specific weapons you like ,so it's is the best loot system I have seen.

The game has every kind of medieval stuff you want the dungeons that are the castles that are the little villages it has all the fantasy stuff you'd like to see.

The game isn't too punishing when you play with friends you can rely revive them very often so it's not one of those where one of your friends have to just sit in a corner be sad all game because you will not be resurrected dem.

If I were to compare Vermintide II to other titles, I would choose Left 4 Dead and Diablo, with Dark Messiah of Might and Magic coming in a close third place due to how combat feels. The game will eventually wear you down with its repetitiveness, because replaying scenarios is embedded in its design, but before it happens you’ll spend dozens of fun hours with it. [05/2018, p.42]
