Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition

Even after 21 years, Dawn of War remains one of the best strategy games ever made and would have deserved an even more elaborate remaster.

Dawn of War Definitive Edition is a faithful transfer of the original game, warts and all. More of a simple modernization effort to get the game to run on more recent systems than anything else. That said, the game has a few glaring issues that really should have been resolved before this rework hit the shelves.

One of the most comprehensive and best W40K games ever made, a timeless and brilliant strategy game that truly deserves a better remaster.

The definitive edition of Dawn of War polishes up its good points and packages together a big roster of races to choose from. It doesn't improve on its weak points, though, like its not-so-bright AI. The multiplayer is where you'll find most of your fun, I suspect.

Many reissues, such as the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, come with fun extras. For example, behind-the-scenes videos, making-of anecdotes, a collection of artwork, or a cool glossary with background information. None of these can be found in Dawn of War: Definitive Edition.

Relic’s conservative and surface-level approach to this remaster means Dawn of War – Definitive Edition isn’t quite definitive, but it’s by far the best way to play one of the finest RTS games ever made.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a gloriously loud, bolter-filled RTS that offers a small but awesome taste of that unique flavour of grimdark. Space Marines shout, Chaos cackles, everyone distrusts everyone, and war (as well as badass battle attire) is the only constant. Its story is serviceable but still tasty (and clearly made for fans), while combat delivers constant, satisfying spectacle, keeping the whole thing engaging decades later. Sadly, while the Anniversary Edition offers the base game along with all three expansions, it brings few if any modern comforts to the table, once again leaving you in the hands of modders.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition sits on the edge of what defines a remake. The audio, UI improvements, and inclusion of all its DLC make it an appealing entry point for newcomers and a nostalgic return for longtime fans. Yet, its dated animations, controls, and art style struggle to hold up against today’s standards. Still, with its sheer amount of content and strategic gameplay, it remains a worthy experience for anyone ready to dive into this gigantic universe.

A large part of the strength that makes Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition unique comes from the foundational elements of the original game — which is by no means a drawback for the newer version. However, I believe there was a missed opportunity to elevate the classic to a technical level worthy of a 2025 title, without necessarily losing its identity. In the end, the project fails to innovate in key areas, but succeeds in presenting a great game to a new audience.

This is just the RTS genre at its absolute best, and while Relic could have done more, they really could, what they have done works well overall, and at a lower price, it's hard not to recommend it.

Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition is intended only for fans and newcomers. The former will buy it anyway, while the latter would be better off starting with this version. Others are unlikely to find anything interesting in the new edition.

Dawn of War – Definitive Edition is a respectful return to one of the most iconic RTS ever made, but it stops halfway between tribute and true restoration. The updated visuals and the convenience of having all campaigns in one place are welcome, yet the lack of deeper improvements is hard to ignore. It’s enjoyable and nostalgic, but also a reminder of what this remaster could have been with more ambition.
