Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. not only expands the reach of Sega's iconic franchise, but also attempts to present the definitive experience for the online competitive scene, despite stumbling in matchmaking.

Virtua Fighter 5 REVO is an essential title for fans of the series and players who enjoy technical and well-balanced fighting games. It doesn’t try to reinvent the formula but refines what was already excellent. Now, we can only hope that this franchise revival is a sign that the next Virtua Fighter will arrive in full force.

It’s the best version of a legendary fighting experience, and even if it doesn’t check all the expected boxes of a modern fighting game package, it still kicks ass.

I mentioned at the start of this review that the improvements found in PGA Tour 2K25 are mostly found in the margins. They’re more evolutionary than revolutionary. There are enough of those changes, though, that this release represents a giant step forward for this series and modern golf video games. It may be my favorite golf game ever made and is a must-play for anyone who enjoys the genre.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. isn’t a revolutionary overhaul, but it refines an already exceptional fighter with sharper visuals, rollback netcode, and improved combat. While these enhancements make for a smoother and more competitive experience, especially online, some players may be disappointed by the lack of new game modes. That said, this remains one of the finest 3D fighters ever made, standing as both a tribute to its legacy and a reminder of what awaits the series’ future. At its budget price, it’s an easy recommendation for both newcomers and veterans.

There's not much here to excite those who enjoy a bit of single-player fighting action, but those who like to play online against others will be in their element. Basically, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is just short of being the definitive version of the game, being streamlined in numerous ways while also benefitting from improved visuals and rollback netcode.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O brings the classic 2006 fighting game into the modern era with stunning 4K graphics, 60 FPS performance, and rollback netcode for seamless online multiplayer. This definitive PC version introduces gameplay balancing adjustments, new moves, and a celebration of the series' legacy with the 30th Anniversary Edition upgrade. While it lacks new single-player content, R.E.V.O delivers the most technically proficient and visually impressive iteration of Virtua Fighter 5 yet, making it a must-play for both veterans and newcomers to the franchise.

As it is now, VF5 REVO is the best currently available version of an all-time great 3D fighting game. If you're willing to put the effort into it, Virtua Fighter will reward you with some of the most intense fighting out there. Just please, make sure your PC runs it at a proper frame rate before you do anything else.

As was the case with the PS4 version of the game, your enjoyment of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is going to be dependent on what aspect of fighting games you enjoy the most. If you're more of a competitive online fighter, you'll appreciate the focus on that scene, but you will lament the lack of cross-play, as PC fighting game players tend to be a smaller community. Those who enjoy local versus play won't find any mechanical differences, while single-player fighting game enthusiasts will feel the sting the most since the game feels quite sparse in this area, but this is saved by the fact that the core fighting mechanics are so strong. As a stopgap measure to a completely new Virtua Fighter game, R.E.V.O. does a very good job in introducing PC players to the series and keeping them sharp in preparation for the new game's arrival.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. manages to survive the passage of time because it's a great game in terms of gameplay. However, the lack of a story mode or further development in the arcade mode makes it a challenging experience for someone who plays solo. This Virtua Fighter is competitive and nothing more. Sega wants to see if the community is still there and maybe develop a sixth installment.

The Virtua Fighter series returns to PC after 28 years, bringing its signature intuitive mechanics seamlessly adapted for keyboard controls. Even with excellent 4K support and optimization, it feels like a solid revival. However, the lackluster single-player content and unstable rollback netcode, struggling with severe ping issues, show that it still needs some fine-tuning.

This version enhances Ultimate Showdown’s visuals and adds rollback netcode, but its implementation is inconsistent, and the lack of cross-play with PS4 limits the online experience. While the core gameplay remains excellent, the absence of single-player content and the high price of DLC make it feel like a missed opportunity rather than a definitive edition.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is an outstanding update to a classic of the genre. With significant improvements to graphics, netcode, and character customization, it delivers a fighting experience that remains thoroughly enjoyable, as long as you're willing to embrace its old-school gameplay. While the story is hardly a highlight (as is the case of the majority of fighting games), the deep and demanding combat system more than makes up for it. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is a must-have in the modern fighting game landscape.

With its final balance patch and the addition of rollback netcode, SEGA is making a clear statement—Virtua Fighter is back, and it’s here to stay.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is worth picking up if you just want to play as Akira and smash some folks with more accurate online play thanks to the game’s Rollback Netcode. The game is solid online and features a large roster of fun, unique characters (even if I find them visually dull) to keep you busy for years as you learn the nuances of how they fight. All the same, a few more extras or modes from past games might have made this purchase a bit more palatable. Even so, there’s a lot of fun and challenging fights to be had here.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O does its job at introducing new fans to the franchise. It’s a fun refresh of an older game, but you won’t be missing out if you don’t pick up this title.

The lack of single-player options is going to be missed by many while they look to dive back in and feel the nostalgia of the series. The soundtrack, visuals, sound design and actual gameplay are still solid but can seem dated. These aspects are still special in their own way and almost seem to add more charm to this classic fighting game. While the foundation of what makes Virtua Fighter special is still here in Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., it's still lacking in a lot of aspects. With that said, it's still a cheaper fighting game that's reliably fun and a good game to play while you wait for the newest entry in the series to make its debut. What we have here is a solid PC port of the PS4 remaster and its still a welcome addition to the PC fighting game community. This isn’t an overwhelmingly huge update and new release of the game, but rather a way to give new and old players alike a taste of the classic fighting game.

Assigning a bad rating to Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is a dirty job, but someone had to do it. Reduced to the bone content and one of the most feeble rollbacks I've ever seen condemn to insufficiency an extraordinary but outdated game, unable in its current state to offer an online infrastructure that guarantees the development of a healthy community. We hope that the new chapter in such a prestigious series will not suffer from such neglect.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.. is a terrible remaster of a great game. There's almost nothing to do in single-player, and the developers didn't bother to polish the multiplayer before the release.
