Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is an excellent game from a narrative standpoint, surrounded by other systems of varying quality — some justified by the pursuit of consistency with the setting, others clearly the result of production issues during development. Overall, it’s better than we expected and turned out to be an engaging and deep experience, certainly worthy of the first Bloodlines in how it portrays the vampiric world.Be aware, however, that the role-playing aspect is expressed more through dialogue than through the rest of the gameplay, and those looking for a title where combat is the most polished part have come to the wrong place.

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 is clearly a radically different experience from its illustrious predecessor. Despite the regrettable loss of the "role-playing" aspect and the emblematic freedom of the first episode in favor of a more typical "narrative action-RPG" format, its sequel still does a good job of immersing us with undeniable mastery in the unique atmosphere of the World of Darkness. This is notably thanks to a fascinating story carried by two characters offering a beautiful duality; with two gameplays that skillfully complement each other by alternating truly exhilarating action/infiltration phases and investigation phases with a well-placed touch of madness. The title of The Chinese Room, however, suffers from a totally anecdotal open world, and a technical aspect that is certainly not unpleasant to look at, but which needs a little refinement to properly display its enticing vampire fangs.

The story is strong, the characters are good, and the atmosphere gets better the longer you play. The two games are very similar. The first was messy but beloved, and the same can be said about the sequel. It has its flaws, especially in the combat system, but it also has soul and charm. If you can look past the technical flaws and focus on the story and the abilities instead, this is a refreshing breath of fresh air in the genre.

A gripping story full of intrigue and murder that struggles to find its footing as an RPG sequel.

The Chinese Room delivers a narratively rich and atmospheric sequel that captures the essence of *World of Darkness* with strong character writing and moral nuance, but its shallow combat, linear mission design, and limited freedom make it fall short of the immersive depth and variety of the original.

Those who are unfamiliar with the first Bloodlines will have a distinct advantage with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. A compelling storyline, an atmosphere as thick as blood, and brutal action make for an impressive package – although the role-playing aspect has been noticeably reduced.

Given the circumstances, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 does pretty well. Technical limitations and its troubled past mean that it falls short of reaching its full potential and realizing all of its ambitions, especially in terms of the open world. But it's still a good narrative game, with a very well-written story and characters that we enjoyed discovering. The gameplay is simple but effective and complements the story well, alongside a very decent production.

A great detective story with lots of vampire flair, trapped in the toothless body of a thin-blooded sequel.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 doesn't look like the product of development hell at all. Despite the tight deadlines, The Chinese Room has created a decent game. Unfortunately, under such circumstances, it was simply impossible to replicate the scale of the first VTMB.

For fans of the first game, the wait for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has been long and frustrating, and the new game likely arrives with unrealistic expectations. Far from being an unmitigated disaster, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is entertaining but flawed. Excellent writing, a solid narrative, and quality performances are definitely high points. Uninspired quests and underdeveloped RPG elements suck some of the fun and potential replayability from the experience. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is probably not the game fans hoped for, but its setting, lore, and noire-ish vibe make it worth consideration for fans of all things vampire.

Bloodlines 2 feels like a game crushed under the weight of a legacy that has lingered in the dark for years. While playing, you find yourself mourning for not what it does, but what it couldn’t become.

Bloodlines 2 has a massive potential and less problems at launch when compared to the first game. The characters, the world, the story are very good, and Paradox is a company know for embracing mods – who knows what the future will bring? I had a blast, despite some gameplay issues and absence of RPG mechanics, and fans of the universe should be more than happy.

As a sequel and role-playing game, it's a disappointment, but if you ignore the big name, you get an exciting crime story with good characters and a lot of atmosphere - and that deserves respect.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 feels more like a case of unfulfilled potential than an outright failure. While its main story offers a serviceable core, other elements like combat and quest design often feel dated.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 won't be a game for everyone. If you're looking for the depth and variety of content offered by other leading AAA RPGs, The Chinese Room's relatively modest take on Seattle-at-night might leave you feeling a little underwhelmed. But if you want a story that you can sink your teeth into and gameplay that, while not always given the proper room to breathe, often gets the job done, then you'll likely settle into this relaxed-fit action-adventure quite nicely. In a way, Bloodlines 2 is a fitting continuation of its predecessor's legacy: it's deeply flawed, but masterfully written.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a good game, but one that's held back by the expectations of being a sequel to an all-time classic. If you can step away from the baggage of the Bloodlines title, there is a lot here to enjoy in terms of narrative and atmosphere, though the combat is too repetitive.

If I may really channel my inner Toreador, I have a complicated, love-hate relationship with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 that feels almost impossible to boil down into a simple thesis statement or, certainly, a single-digit number. At times I want to be alone with it in a moment of passion, and at others I want to strangle the life out of it. Nested within the things that bug me about it are bits that I love, and in the parts I like the most I can detect the subtle whiff of things I loathe. There is a story well worth experiencing that nevertheless let me down brutally in the end. It gets so much right about how it should feel to play as one of the Kindred through every stolen bite and scrappy brawl while completely ignoring certain crucial aspects of it. Did I enjoy it? Certainly. That's an easy yes. Would I recommend it? That's a much more complicated question. The thing is, I could say the same about the original Bloodlines as well, despite the two being such different animals. Both are deeply flawed, yet unique and remarkable bites at the apple. Or, I guess, the jugular. And that may be the best compliment I can pay it.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is no classic, that's for sure. The game's side content is mediocre at best, and its technical optimization is among the worst seen recently. That said, the setting's atmosphere is intact, the combat is fun, and the main story is well-crafted. I recommend it to fans, but only at a lower price than the launch one.

A rather underwhelming sequel to Troika's legendary RPG, which is somewhat redeemed if treated as a simple VtM action-adventure with an interesting detective story at its core.

Fans of the World of Darkness will certainly find at least the atmosphere, good characters, and an enjoyable plot, thanks in part to the fact that big-budget vampire-themed games don't come flooding in. Fans of the first game for its RPG aspect and replayability will find almost nothing here except pale homages. It's up to you to decide where you stand between these two extremes. As a side note, I feel it's important to note that compared to The Chinese Room's typical output, this game still represents significant ambitions and a first for the English studio. Perhaps the experience gained will one day bear sweeter fruit, without leaving a legacy too burdensome to manage.

Is Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 a worthy successor to the first game? Yes and no. It is an interesting game with many good features, but it is also riddled with problems and strange gameplay solutions.

Playing Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 leaves behind a strange aftertaste — that of a game that tried, sincerely, to rise again, but never fully escaped the shadow of its own name. It’s a work burdened by expectation: a legacy of moral choice, seduction, and freedom that here survives only in fragments, like memories of a dream once vivid and now fading. The Chinese Room has crafted a game visually arresting and tonally melancholic, a beautiful echo of the World of Darkness brought to life with care and conviction. Yet beneath that cold, magnetic surface, the design falters. Its mechanics rarely match its ambitions, its choices lack real impact, and the immersive role-playing tension that once defined Bloodlines feels reduced to an illusion.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 abandons the depth, reactivity, and narrative weight that made the original a cult classic. Dialogue choices return, but they rarely matter, offering limited consequences and almost no meaningful divergence from the main path. What should feel like role-playing becomes a guided experience, stripped of the nuance and player agency that defined its predecessor. After a chaotic development cycle marked by delays and studio changes, the final result feels less like a true sequel and more like a soft reboot that never finds its identity. Technical issues, restricted systems, and a noticeable lack of ambition undermine what could have been a long-awaited revival of the franchise. In the end, Bloodlines 2 inherits none of the legacy that made the first game iconic, delivering a shallow and disappointing return after years of anticipation.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a game with great narrative and atmosphere, but it fails as an RPG. It succeeds in dialogue, setting, and themes, but stumbles in game design, variety, and meaningful choices. For those looking for a dark and well-written story, it's worth the experience. However, those who expected a true spiritual successor to Bloodlines (2004) will be left thirsty for blood—and depth.

Bloodlines 2 has undeniable qualities: its rich world, its political intrigue, its immersive atmosphere, and some vampiric powers offer real moments of pleasure. But the game multiplies good ideas that it executes poorly and, in this sense, is neither a good RPG nor a good action game. It's a mixed experience that, despite solid writing, suffers from rather poor level design, minimal progression, and low-impact choices, tarnishing the full potential of an otherwise promising sequel. Bloodlines 2 gives the impression of a game rushed out, which did not fully exploit what its flamboyant universe had to offer.

An unexpected blend of modern vampire drama and noir detective fiction. The combat is serviceable, but any excitement it offers gets buried under repetitive city wandering and dull quest design. Bloodlines 2 isn’t the catastrophic failure some feared, yet it falls far short of the legend many had been waiting for.

It’s a huge shame that after so many years in development, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 has ended up not quite living up to its potential. The RPG features have been drained away, leaving behind a husk of an action-adventure title that sometimes passes as interesting. Set your expectations accordingly for this one, as it doesn’t live up to the series’ name, no matter how much it uses its compelling setting.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a good example of the gap between ambition and execution. Despite an intriguing premise and well-developed main characters, the game ultimately feels too linear and repetitive, with limited player choice and shallow world interaction. Many of the lengthy dialogues have little to no impact on the story, side quests are dull and formulaic, and the world itself feels empty and lifeless. In the end, Bloodlines 2 comes across more as a walking simulator with light RPG elements than a worthy successor to the cult classic.

Bloodlines 2 isn’t your typical RPG. It tells a great and complex story while taking you on an adventure where every choice you make affects the narrative, inside a city that feels alive with lovable and hateable characters. However, it could have done so much more to live up to it's predecessor and TTRPG inspiration.

This is the fundamental flaw in Bloodlines 2. Troika's original game was not only about being a vampire but living as one, it's balmy LA nights riddled with chances to fulfill that fantasy. Bloodlines 2, in comparison, has no inner life. [Issue#418, p.114]

Bloodlines 2 fails to capture the charm of the original. Gameplay is tedious and unengaging, and the attempt to revive the franchise feels unfinished. It survives, but leaves a lingering sense of what could have been.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 fails to recapture the original’s magic, instead magnifying the worst parts of Troika’s classic, with janky combat and occasionally woeful performance issues. Long-time VTM fans may enjoy haunting Seattle’s snowy streets, getting to know its well-written cast, and testing each clan’s unique playstyle, but it’s a far cry from what it could have been.

I really wanted to like Bloodlines 2. After all the production turmoil and underwhelming previews, I never expected it to be even half as good as the cult classic original - but I quietly hoped that a talented studio like The Chinese Room could at least pull the troubled project together. And while the game has a few enjoyable elements, they’re nowhere near enough to overshadow its many issues and downright inexcusable flaws.

There is an OK vamp story hiding in here; careful, dicey conversations with dangerous fellow vampires are by far the most interesting thing that Bloodlines 2 has going for it. And I enjoyed some parts of Seattle, particularly the dive bars packed with people gyrating to (of course) goth music. The Chinese Room has managed to make something playable and vaguely interesting out of a game development disaster. But after the first few hours, I kept going more out of morbid curiosity than enjoyment.

It took six years, multiple studios, countless reboots, and a trail of broken promises to finally deliver Bloodlines 2. The result is utterly schizophrenic : a game too ambitious for its budget, yet too timid for its own universe. What was meant to reinvent the vampire RPG ends up merely mimicking its conventions. Bled dry by compromise, Bloodlines 2 has lost what little vitality it had left. Beneath layers of code and the scars of its tortured development, you can still glimpse what it might have been: a gothic tragedy about duality, a nocturnal political fresco, a mirror held up to our own thirst for power. But that dream didn’t survive the daylight.

The Chinese Room has managed to make something from a box of inherited parts, but this action RPG feels hollow and functional, and is only redeemed by some stellar performances from the characters and cast.

A sequel with a different philosophy that nails the atmosphere of the World of Darkness, yet often stumbles in its execution, trading player freedom for a linear story filled with brilliant but underdeveloped ideas.
  2. A cursory attempt to yank the story off the rails by picking every antisocial, confrontational dialogue option resulted in the plot following the exact same trajectory, with somewhat snippier interactions with the cast and a few new lines of incidental dialogue based on clan choice. Being an elder vampire means that people will put up with a LOT of your bullshit, it seems. Aside from some Fallout-esque epilogue slides based on your few choices, there's not much you can do to steer the story. Not an inherent flaw if you're willing to judge this game on its own terms, but a final nail in the coffin for those hoping Troika's legacy lives on through this game.

Overall, Bloodlines 2 was a lot of fun. While it did present a few quirks and issues in places, I found the world, narrative, and characters to be compelling enough that I kept tearing through the game. If you love moody, dramatic vampires and murder mysteries, you’re bound to fall in love with this game.
