With a wealth of weapons, unlockable characters, hidden relics and buff-providing cards, Galante has adopted the kitchen-sink approach to fleshing out his game. [Issue#378, p.121]

Vampire Survivors has me seriously jonesing for a portable version; its pick-up-and-play simplicity seems tailor-made for on-the-go play. If you have a Steam Deck, the game is a perfect fit; it was the most-played title on the system in both August and September. I don’t, so I’ve taken to playing it on my laptop because I just can’t get enough.

I think about all this as I play. I think about what I'm going to unlock next, which evolution I'm aiming for, where the next treasure chest and coin boost is coming from. I think about garlic, my favourite attack, which creates a little circle of damage around you so you can just nudge yourself against enemies the way a cat nudges you with its head when it wants fuss. I think about popcorn, which is what Vampire Survivors sounds like, each monster death sounding like another bit of corn popping in the microwave until the whole thing reaches a buttery crescendo. While Vampire Survivors isn't even technically out, the latest update has made this Early Access title so fun to play. [Early Access Score = 80]

Vampire Survivors is a long slow burn that never stops getting hotter, maybe not quite the first of the genre it ignited, but certainly the best. [Early Access Provisional Score = 90]

By its simple gameplay, Vampire Survivors is not a title that will revolutionize video games. However, its very addictive principle will captivate you for hours. [Early Access Score = 75]

Vampire Survivors might look like Steam Early Access shovelware, but its depth and satisfying gameplay loop will keep you coming back for more. [Early Access Score = 80]

Vampire Survivors is still in early access, of course, so one hopes that more depth and variety are on the way. The important stuff, though — that core blend of roguelike and bullet hell shoot-em-up — is already beyond solid. With a bit more meat on the bone, Vampire Survivors could be ready to take its place among Dead Cells, Hades and the other greats that preceded it.
  8. I was in it for the plinkety-plink rush of clattering into a huge pile of gems. I was in it for the five item chest boogie, the mindless yet mindful monster shepherding, the giant meteors and the rainbow scythes. Those are all still here, and you can push into further and deadlier territory than ever before, especially if you get far enough to unlock the endless mode, or the modifier that lets you keep upgrading weapons past their usual point. Vampire Survivors is a bigger, better playground now - albeit one with a bodyguard blocking the final set of swings.

This game really did a great job perfecting the “just one more round” level of addiction, and the simplicity of game controls and mechanics where the only “button” is the movement of your character, whether that’s the arrow keys or a joystick. Graphics, sound, and complexity of gameplay are that of an old Flash game on Newgrounds. I mean all of this in the best way, this is a highly addictive game boiled down to its absolutely smallest components, which is somewhat of an art with how well it was executed. The issue I had with this game is after 6 hours, I just thought why am I still doing this? There isn’t much to it at all. There is a lot of fun that can be had in this game, I think at minimum you’ll get a few hours out of it, at most you’ll get tons of hours out of it, and with the very low price tag of $5, it’s absolutely worth it, but in the end I found that it’s simplicity was also the reason I stopped playing. Maybe its just me, but once I hit one REALLY good run, my interest completely dropped off. Glad I played it though. Full Review »

I grab garlic I run right, I get dopamine. The fact this game is so cheap is insane, the dev deserves more.
