Amazing game. I've seen it compared to all sorts of titles, all across the genre spectrum - Zelda, Souls, HLD... - which, I believe, speaks to its true uniqueness. Though you will find familiar elements in exploration, graphics and combat to things you might have played before, believe me: the ensemble is something altogether different.

The combat is amazingly fan and incredibly fluid - quite honestly, I believe it has the most satisfying parry timing/feel of anything I've ever played.

Exploration is awesome: from the get-go you can go pretty much anywhere, and though the sequence you get the items affects your progression, it never stalls it. It's a very clever level and world-design that encourages exploration and makes revisiting earlier areas a joy and not a bother.

The "time limit" was, I must admit, something I was a little bit skeptical about initially. I'm more of a chill gamer, and I was afraid it'd make me anxious - but it surprisingly didn't, not at all! I think the way the time limit works (which I will not say because it's a plot spoiler) is VERY unique and it ends up serving more as a plot point (and a very engaging one at that!) than as a true limitation. It forces you to make decisions and manage time and resources, but it is very fair and forgiving (I've been playing in the standard difficulty - I'm sure the highest level offers a more unforgiving and challenging experience for those who seek it).

The art is something else. Some of the prettiest pixel art I've seen in my life, and it's unbelievable it was all done by such a small development team. The cutscenes are moving, the parallaxes are out of this world, and all the tiny details (the reflections, the rain drops, the bounce-back frames) are a feast for the eyes.

Finally, the soundtrack: it is at the same time widely diverse and incredibly cohesive and consistent. There are many earworms which will be stuck to your brain for hours after you've stopped playing, but there are also many chill, ambient tracks that perfectly match the post-apocalyptic setting.

All in all, UNSIGHTED is an INCREDIBLE game that you should pick up right now.

Part of the best indie games i ever played, It's truly a mix of souls-like and Hyper Light Drifter, atmosphere is so magnificent, i like this kind of aesthetic, the pixel art animation is so fluid, very well made, along with the effects in the scenario, kinda hard too, but it's so **** awesome, gameplay and the music hits so hard with that atmosphere of cyberpunk apocalyptic world, please buy

Unsighted is a very satisfying game because as much as it appears to be a bunch of games, I assure you it's unique in its way.

However, even without turning Explorer mode om (which removes said time limits), I found the game to be an amazing and fair experience, with the limits on each character's lifetime being the main hook of the story and serving as a great way for the player to empathize and worry about them. I don't think I need to say anything about Unsighted's pixel art and animations, they're gorgeous. Even though I had thought I had enough of "Souls-like" combat mechanics, this game uses elements like dodging, parrying and limited healing excellently, with amazing animations and sound design helping a lot. The world feels great to explore, and the dungeons are designed in a way that both gives me nostalgia from some of the best Zelda moments and also feels original, putting little twists on familiar items (which make them more fun to use than their inspirations). All in all, Unsighted is a incredible experience, and if you are a metroidvania and/or Zelda fan like I am, I couldn't recommend it more. Expand

Fantastic map and world building, traversing the world is fun by itself.

At first glance you feel like you need to hurry to save your friends, but I found time to be actually quite forgiving, and there are multiple accessibility options to make it a non issue if you don't like time pressure in games.

Graphics are great, the pixel art and animations are gorgeous, and it's amazing the game was developed by a team of two people.

The game has a bit of a death clock to it which really cuts against the game's design. Main story characters, including the player's character, can run out of time and be lost. But, the game is clearly designed to be explored, with many alternate paths and powerups to be collected. Fortunately, the game does have an option to turn off the death clock so the game can be fully explored.

The story is interesting and somewhat unique, but it does need a trigger warning: The game is marred by the developer's mistaken views on diversity. With only a few exceptions that are at best unclear, whites and males are entirely excluded from the game, which is actually anti-diverse. Diversity through exclusion is an oxymoron, and it's a shame to see an otherwise decent game dragged down by racial and sexual bias that shouldn't have anything to do with it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a video game, that's for sure. I played this through Xbox Game Pass.

The biggest issue is that it tries to do a lot of things, but it really only does two things right 99% of the time - and those are the exploration and dungeons. The movement tools you get flow fairly well and makes exploring and moving around fun by the midpoint if you're following the recommended order. It's ironic though, because you're discouraged from exploring TOO much due to the Majora's Mask-esque timer, but the game would have been better without it. The problem with the timer is that Majora's Mask didn't make you tediously go around the map finding the magic dust you need and giving it to each character you're interested in keeping alive. The idea is neat, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

The art direction is a really mixed bag. I feel like there might have been a little bit of "too many cooks" going on here because some spritework is genuinely good, while some feels downright amateurish. The humanoid NPC designs are the worst offender, with clashing color palettes and bizarre, sometimes almost fetishistic appearances (especially Ariel!) The music is okay, but it's nothing that super stands out to me. It works within the context of the game but that's about it.

The combat only really works in smaller engagements and boss fights with limited adds. As soon as you throw too many things on the screen it becomes a frustrating audio-visual overload, and trying to perfect-guard and critical enemies like the game encourages you to often ends up with you getting hit while your controls recover. Enemies will just kinda do whatever they want whenever they want, instead of having any real AI direction like in some other action games. However, when you're able to just focus down one or two enemies at a time - or a boss - it really starts to click and feel fair and fun. The final boss was actually probably the most fun, especially after the Factory boss which was way too simplistic.

The story is honestly really generic and uninteresting. It's just sort of a standard Zelda story - find the magical macguffins, make the super sword, kill the bad guy. The NPC timer could have made this a bit more interesting, but the problem is that none of the characters are really likeable or interesting enough for me to care about saving any of them beyond what they provide to me from a gameplay standpoint. It also takes an extremely hamfisted and in-your-face misanthropic approach, pretty much going "DAE all humans are super bad????" from the get-go.

All this to me amounts to a game that's perfectly average. It's not some overwhelming masterpiece of a game or "one of the best games released this year", but it's not a complete trainwreck either. It's probably alright enough to pick up on a sale since the exploration, dungeons and smaller-scale combat arenas make up well enough for the mediocre parts, but honestly - CrossCode is a similar game, is the same price off-sale, is also on Game Pass, and even without the DLC has far more content and is much more solidly designed and written overall, despite its more frustrating and overly-ambitious dungeons.

    TL;DR play CrossCode instead lol

It's been compared pretty readily to Hyper Light Drifer, which does Unsighted no favors at all. HLD told a solid story with no dialogue where Unsighted butchers a story with endless text. HLD had strong, smooth gameplay. Unsighted simply does not. It's got a lot of different systems and ideas! But it does absolutely none of them justice. Expand

The writing is verbose and bland. The gameplay is unpolished and time-consuming. The exploration is at once linear and scattered; diversions and puzzles invariably lead to useless items that do nothing to add dimension or enjoyability to the janky, bare-bones combat. The upgrade/progression system is one of the worst I've seen yet. Unsighted is, tragically, broken from the ground up.

But in this case the game was tearing me a new one and I felt like I just wasn’t improving at all. Imho I’ve been gaming long enough that if I missed something, it isn’t on me usually.

Shame, good art, good music and sound, both with a few hiccups here and there but an overall fantastic presentation. Story seemed neat. Dialog seemed, well, gamey. But somehow the combat never came together for me. I even tried adjusting my monitor in case it was some kind of lag I wasn’t quite feeling it, but it would explain my inability to get the timing of the parry right. Good if you want a very challenging Zelda game maybe. But if you want another game that’s like Zelda and roughly the same difficulty as any recent Zelda, then I’d suggest looking elsewhere. And if you want a more difficult Zelda in this style, I felt the Zelda Cadence Of Hyrule is far better.

I should note, most of my complaints could be fixed in an update someday. But it’s been over a year since launch I think, so I doubt it will happen.

A great top-down Metroidvania with only a few flaws to bring it down.

One flaw is the game's unique gimmick: Your character, and all the NPCs, are on a timer for how long they can keep going before going "Unsighted" and becoming like all the enemies you fight. (In fact, many NPCs share a sprite with common enemies, pressing this point home.) The problem is that this is a Metroidvania,

(In fact, many NPCs share a sprite with common enemies, pressing this point home.) The problem is that this is a Metroidvania, which encourages exploration. And while you're exploring, the clock is ticking. It doesn't make a lot of sense to spend 2 in-game hours to find a pile of "meteor dust" to extend the life of one NPC by 24 hours, when it means 2 hours taken off the lives of the other dozen or so NPCs in the game, not to mention yourself. I beat the game in 20 in-game days, and few NPCs have that much life in them, even after gifting them the 3 doses of meteor dust needed to unlock that NPC's unique reward. Your protagonist only has about 13 days of her own, so I would have needed to use 7 of those doses on her (though there is an upgrade to make this more efficient... if you can find it in time). Fortunately, this is an option you can turn off by putting the game in easy mode.

Speaking of easy mode, another flaw is balance. The combat is actually quite easy overall, as long as you get the parry timing down. Even the giant monsters that the game constantly tells you are too strong to fight, and which you should avoid, go down in only a couple of successful counterattacks. And because the game is nonlinear, it's possible to get the best weapons in the game (other than the super-powerful plot weapon) almost right off the bat. It's also quite possible to unlock movement tools that short-circuit puzzles you have yet to encounter.

Speaking of that plot weapon, it's so strong, you have no need to use anything else. This is convenient, because it means you can leave your subweapon slot on something used for movement. Unfortunately, the game combines the worst of both worlds when it comes to Zelda and Metroid: You have Metroid's constant need to use your mobility tools, but Zelda's need to swap between tools in the menu, no quick-swapping. It's very tedious, and it means your guns are too annoying to bother pulling out for most of the game.

Speaking of the end-game, the combat falls apart in the end. The game tries to increase the challenge with enemy spam, which is very bad for a parry-based system. You just can't parry it all. You will be hit. And you make up for that with the unlocked ability to craft healing items and temporary buffs, even in combat. This is even more tedious than it sounds; crafting requires a lengthy process of going into your inventory, using the portable crafting table, selecting a blueprint from a long vertical list (and if what you want is at the bottom, scrolling to it will take a while), selecting it, and confirming. Then if it's a buff, you have to go activate that in a separate menu.

That said, most of the game was quite enjoyable once I turned off the NPC decay mechanic and took the time to explore. Fortunately, you can leave it on medium-difficulty combat even if you do that, though I personally wish it was harder; I died very few times, and most of them foolishly. The NPCs have a lot of character, the bosses and puzzles are as engaging as any Zelda game, the exploration is excellent as long as you have the time to do it, and the plot is... not amazing, but certainly servicable.

Overall, highly recommended, and I'd love to play a sequel with these quality-of-life issues improved.

It borrows game mechanics and visual style from the likes of CrossCode and Hyper Light Drifter. Tight combat, a good story, plenty of puzzles to solve, interesting boss fights and diverse weapons to use in order to progress to different parts of the map. Different areas have unique weapons, enemies and visual tones, all of which combine to a cohesive, beautiful world.

I should mention that in the default mode, the androids run out of time quite fast and you will have to make decisions as to which NPCs to keep alive. You can, however, choose the Explorer mode and make the time run much slower. This will save you from the stress of rushing the game and you can still keep the difficulty otherwise unchanged. As much as the Explorer mode is not the “intended” mode to play the game, I have found it to be the preferable one for my taste. The difficulty is just right. Whether in combat or puzzles, you will always feel the challenge but not in a frustrating way.

No part of Unsighted is a masterpiece, but it’s a very ambitious game. It tries too many things and I find it marvelous that it succeeds at most of them. Unsighted is the sleeper hit of 2021!

Unsighted is awesome. More people should know about it and play it, especially considering that the game goes out of its way to be accessible even to people who usually find Souls-like titles too hard, or people who dislike the timer mechanic but still want to experience the game, or even people looking for a harder ride. This is a good game and you should go play it. It’s not quite for everyone… but it’s as close as any title I’ve reviewed comes to being a must-play.
