Give me back these FPSs, where really if you were good, you were REALLY good in this genre. Not like now they do a royal victory on Fortnite or win a game on Warzone and feel like pro gamers... But EpicGames wanted to do the EpicFails by drowning UnrealTournament 2014 by making room for Fortnite...

    God forgive us

I started playing UT99 with the demo that I downloaded on my 56.6 K modem in 1999. Then I got the disk on release and played it every day for years. I purchased this game originally for about $20 at a multipurpose retail store about 10 yrs after it came out. I had Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition.

My main setback of this game from being less flawless than it could be is due to a category that I will refer to as realism, regardless of the fictional elements to the game. You can't really open doors, and you can't climb walls

You can't really open doors, and you can't climb walls or other things like that.

Other than that, the game is pretty flawless. The controls are as perfect as can be, and there is/ was plenty of content that you can download, relating to mods and add-ons.

I know that as of lately there are some modders out there that have added the vehicle options in the botmatch modes that is widely popular in later editions of Unreal Tournament, as well as other similar games in the same genre.

Many difficulties to choose depending on your mood. Music score from Michiel van den Bos, Peter Hajba and Alexander Brandon is something worth remembering through the decades. Bot battles in domination are entertaining to watch as spectator, especially if you pickup the level editor (included in the System folder located inside the game installation folder): grab a Deathmatch map, add many capture points, increase team quantities to 4 (for red blue, green and gold team!) add as many bots as you can (16, or 32 if patched) and watch the turf battles go! Modding community as well! Expand

Best fps I have ever played. Its so much fun I'm still playing it. Its still alive and this is 2009. That's how good this game is. While its way more alive in Europe and South America than North America its still a flourishing game, depending on the mod. Team deathmatch, ctf, 125 speed ctf, and ig. This game is definitely still going.

This is the FPS that created a genre and is still a high bar that other games are judged by.

This is plainly and simply one of the most fun, most engaging, and best FPS multiplayer experiences ever.

The gold standard of competitive FPS games. Great maps, fantastic gameplay and an A.I. that was incredible for the time (and still trumps many included in the games of today). Couple that with an amazing soundtrack and an online community that's still active 20 years after the fact, and the result is something truly special.

The best FPS game I have ever played in my life! The guns designs are beautiful, the music gives you chills, the maps are eye catching and unique and even till this day I still play it. This is probably the most perfect FPS game ever!

Still the best deathmatch shooter. Clean graphics (not to mention engine) and solid gameplay. I have yet to find a modern shooter as fast and as satisfying as this. Epic Megagames, what happened to you?!? So much soul behind the game, especially level design.

In the time of release, fantastic gameplay and top technology engine that supports all native APIs for graphic cards existed that time (golden age) like 3dfx Glide, Open Glide, Direct3D, S3 Metal...
Top competitive game, great editor and mods, community, technology benchmark.
And now after (soon) 20 years, its still here, still some people plays it ..and it is still great game. MUST

Unreal Tournament is so good that playing campaign with bots is actually exciting. It looked amazing when it came out (it's not so bad even now). Gameplay is very addictive, weapons are inventive and fun and playing Onslaught game mode was one of the best multiplayer experiences i ever had.

There is good reason why there are no negative reviews. This game pretty much had no flaws. Imagine that, flawless multiplayer FPS? With rather decent solo play vs bots (even slightly challenging on Godlike).

If game had problems, it was players, to be precise cheaters, which caused creation of UTPure and other anti-cheat "add-ons", only problem was that it caused a bit of lag/delay

If game had problems, it was players, to be precise cheaters, which caused creation of UTPure and other anti-cheat "add-ons", only problem was that it caused a bit of lag/delay when playing. But that was one and only problem.

Frankly I never cared about how good this game looks (it did look good, well Unreal engine, kinda guaranteed good look). What was more important was movement in game. Along with Quake 3, this game had probably best and most natural movement I ever experienced in FPS. Plus ability to dodge (well most of us used it to move around via dodge pretty much constantly) was rather unusual that day. Since then, no game had such perfect in game movement (also it was something to master).

Game itself never tried to hamper you with artificial problems. Today, most games have artificial difficulty created by need to fight game mechanics and opponents in same time. Its stupid and mostly it has negative impact on any competitive gaming. UT99 had nothing like this. You had only one limit, which was YOU. I think apart Q3 Arena, very few games are same category. Today probably none.

Back in day, it was bit hard on computer hardware (as UT engine wasnt exactly undemanding). Few years later, everything could go over 100 FPS. Which was good.

Netcode wasnt perfect (well not from today perspective), but it wasnt that hard to learn to compensate for your ping (there were mods like zero ping, which worked quite fine). Still if you take for example today BF4, it had amazing netcode. :D

It had rather nice sound (still has), supported EAX, surround if Im correct. As far as graphics goes, it was possible to play via D3D or OpenGL (what can do that today?).

Game itself was reasonably customizable, bindings, HUD colors/size, crosshairs (actually most today games CANT do that, tragic really). Via console you could enable even some more advanced settings.

Gameplay wise, it was balanced around player skill. Every gun was usable, and if we dont count Redemeer, nothing was overpowered. Sure some weapons (Bio rifle for example) were far from easy to use, and Flak cannon was "noob" gun of sorts, but if you achieved decent skill in game (and your opponents too) it was rather clear that there is no such thing as "noob" gun and everything is usable.

Another thing that was nice (apart headshots and ASMD combo) is for example basic gun, Enforcer. Which is simple pistol. You could pick another one and shoot both, you could use either primary attack (accurate, slower) or secondary attack (faster, less accurate). Thing is, even basic enforcer did 25 dmg (you had 100 when you spawned, boostable to 199). Which means you could kill most ppl with 4 shots. Show me today FPS, where you can kill someone with 4 shots from basic gun (obviously with dual Enforcers it was much easier).

Then there was ability to combo. Mostly known was ASMD rifle, secondary attack sent big blob of blue energy towards target, if you hit that blob with primary attack it went caboom and mostly killed everything in radius. Advanced players were able to do this while moving.

Rocket launcher despite being rather slow compared to Quake counterpart (you could still rocket jump tho, it just hurt much more) could do primary attack, secondary attack and then loaded primary (hold and load up to 6 rockets) or loaded secondary and on top of that if you loaded primary and then hit secondary as you released, you could alter attack to send rockets in tight cluster (was pretty much instakill if you hit with it). If you count it, you have 6 different ways to attack with single weapon.. impressive, huh?

Beauty of multiplayer was that you could literally kill with everything as long as you were good. Game was pretty unforgiving for beginners, today mainstream pub would run back to mama crying after one Deck 17 game. Cause this game wasnt made for ppl which are unwilling to improve themselves, there were no easy ways to kill. You didnt get award for participation in game, you didnt get actually any award apart good feeling when you saw your nickname at top of end game stats. Thats exactly why I loved and still love that game.

This game is pure essence of what is (or should be) competitive multiplayer game. Clean, fast, easy to play and hard to master. Everyone is equal and you play to beat others, not game mechanics.

Since then, there wasnt any FPS game I would love so much. Also probably none so good. Sure I spent years on CoD4, later on BFBC2 (which would be probably second on my list), but nothing is close to UT99. And unfortunately I doubt there ever will be something at least as good as UT99, cause gaming industry as whole is degenerating and pretty fast..

  1. Every weapon that was in "Unreal" has been given a total facelift for Unreal Tournament. Everything has been totally redrawn and textured - the overall look of the weapons is quite impressive.
  2. Without better DM map design, more polished graphics and artwork and maybe more panache in the weapons design department, we don't feel that Unreal Tournament is quite ready to earn our seal of approval as the uber-shooter to carry gaming into the next millennium.
  3. Not really a revolutionary game, but it is almost perfect at what it does. This is the definitive straight multi-player first person shooter. It is an amazing game that never fails to impress or entertain.
