As a huge fan of the genre I found it subpar and uninteresting, it had the premises to do great things but generally falls flat.

For it's price on steam, it is worth a try.
However, this game does not hold a candle to Fallout! Do not be fooled!
Story and lore are quite creative and really well done. Attention to detail and good atmosphere once you adjust to the gameplay. Really liked the various weapons and armors/items available to use and find. The graphics and layout leave something to be desired..LOL

The graphics and layout leave something to be desired..LOL reminds me of SIM CITY 2000. . the fighting system is just too bland, if this came out in the 90's it would be acceptable.

Also, dialogue was somewhat immersive. Some funny moments too, the quests 50/50 between fun and annoying. Low Level CAP was a killer for me, combat scenarios that depend to much on a lucky roll. Make sure you save! Have like 5 save files in case lol Certain situations the game is done due to a bad save, or you'll have to start over. The overall challenge is good, especially in the beginning a positive.

Would not recommend this game unless you are REALLY desperate for a cheap CRPG that'll kill some time

Don't waste your time, little enjoyment reward in an RPG such as this.

Pros: -Great crafting system -Good passive skill system where stats only affect passive skills to a small degree Cons: -Stats are tied to feats, limiting customization -Combat is much harder without stealth and frustrating (enemies often get the jump on you, when you enter combat your opponents go first)

    -Inventory is messy
-No mini-map, need to remember a lot of things
    -Graphics not great
-Certain sounds hurt my ears (game pissed me off so quick, luckily you can disable environmental sounds)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Don't think this game is like fallout 1/2. Sure some people like both games but that alone does not make it similar. There is no reason to make a game this ugly in 2015. Even a potato PC can handle more than this. And dialogues isn't fun either. Expand

With the recent update, the devs have thrown out full psi builds in favour of a 'balance over fun' mindset in a SINGLEPLAYER.

It's ridiculous to compare this to Fallout 1/2. Both had excellent visuals that have aged well to this day (with or without high-res mods), which this game doesn't. In fact, Underrail probably one of the ugliest isometric games I've played.

On top of that, writing/quests. Remember you could right click stuff FO 1/2 to get a clever/humorous comment? Remember excitement from stuff like

On top of that, writing/quests. Remember you could right click stuff FO 1/2 to get a clever/humorous comment? Remember excitement from stuff like getting into the Glow or New Reno? Well, none of that here as well. Quests, location design and writing in Underrail are all sup-par.

What's left is a decent TB battle system. However, many games with decent or above-decent TB systems come out every year (unlike successful FO 1/2 successors in terms of atmosphere/story, of which there were barely any - Arcanum, New Vegas... what else?).

    In other words, avoid.

If you regard the 90s and first two Fallout games as ancient history, Underrail is not for you, because without the anesthetic power of nostalgia it might be completely indigestible. [03/2016, p.71]

Core fans of the first two Fallout games will enjoy Underrail as well as the players who hate the last 15 years of game development. It is a hardcore game that somewhere under the terrible interface and illogical absence of some key elements hides days of traditional post-apocalyptic entertainment.

With more intelligent and varied AI, and a combat system that didn’t effectively screw over anyone wanting something just a little more accessible (sadly a trait shared with many games attempting to be ‘hardcore’, especially the retro-styled ones), this could have been a genuine classic instead of a missed opportunity.
