    Absolutely wonderful.

Loved playing through with my wife, we tackled the puzzles together and the feelings of figuring it out ourselves was amazing and so nostalgic.

There was one particular puzzle though, a riddle, now that one was the wrong kind of nostalgia, like old adventure games where you just have no idea what logic they are working on, but everything else was just fantastic.

It's a nostalgic throwback to early Zelda games. However this game has collectible "manual pages" scattered all across the world that give you information on the mechanics of the game as well as how to solve certain puzzles. This was a core mechanic I haven’t seen before. The illustrations in the manual are beautifully retro and it fits thematically in the game (because old adventure games used to have these types of physical illustrated manuals) and the way the manual reveals the secrets of the game to you was at times very rewarding.

The game has a medium sized, but very packed open world. Sadly the progress route through the game is actually very linear, but not necessarily very clear and traveling around the world is a bit slow. I got stuck in the middle of the game because there was one specific location I needed to go to get a certain item (something straight out of the Zelda games) to proceed, but it was hidden in a way that I walked past it 2 times and used several hours just going around in circles (I managed to solve some endgame puzzles while doing this though). Multiple entrances or a subtle hint telling me that this was the next location I was supposed to go to would’ve made this part of the game less annoying.

There was also an area (Lower Miasma) that you can drop down to that has a locked door and if you don’t have the key, you’re stuck and you have to either kill your character or reload the game to get out of there. I consider this a design flaw. A shortcut elevator from the checkpoint would have sufficed. Maybe they’ll patch this later.

Some of the puzzles were pretty hard, but I managed to solve them all without help by systematically going through the world and writing down notes or taking pictures with my phone when I encountered something suspicious. There are some mechanics in late game that help you find the unsolved puzzles/areas that are required for the true ending, but you need to do some exploration and write down notes to get the true ending. Puzzles themselves are pretty good - all of them (except the optional ones) are solvable if you pay attention to your surroundings as well as the game manual. The most obscure ones are optional and actually require you to put some time into figuring them out. I’m pretty sure very few people will solve them without guides, but I don’t mind just reading about them online (just reading about them blew my mind because solving them really requires effort and solving them reveals one final secret message that is definitely worth checking out).

Bosses were quite easy for me (they usually took 3-5 tries which for me is pretty optimal), but I can see them being hard for someone who doesn’t take the time to find all the upgrade materials around the world. The way you beat the bosses is somewhat similar to Soulsborne games, so experience with their mechanics and slower combat will give you a slight advantage. They’re easier than Soulsborne bosses, but you still need to recognize openings between enemy attacks and mashing buttons will get you killed. One enemy encounter seemed to spike in difficulty, but after a couple of tries I bought some single use items and cheesed the fight.

Game also shares Soulsborne’s minimalistic, ambiguous storytelling. To have any idea what the story was about, you need to go to the forums or watch a lore video. I prefer stories with character development and understandable goals and motivations. Games like Dark Souls or Inside at least gave me slightly more concrete themes I could latch on to. But then again, I didn’t expect there to be ANY story so I was happy that they at least tried to add some bits of lore for the community to figure out.

The secret mechanics of this game were so fun that I wished it had more of them! Because of them I’d also recommend not to read about the game too much and just play it. Because of its unique mechanic of collecting the manual pages, this might be one of my favorite Zelda-like games ever. I did get stuck once which was really annoying because I felt I was just wasting time running around areas I had already been to. Using guides for this game is not recommendable so I wish they’d at least make the main path of the game more visible and add a few more shortcuts so that backtracking to some areas wasn’t so time consuming.

I’d give the game 9/10 (strong recommendation) but because this is a disadvantageous time for smaller adventure games, I’ll give it one bonus point.

Tunic is a combination of the best parts of The Legend of Zelda and Fez. While the game starts off as a standard action adventure Zelda-like game, it becomes something way more grand. The beginning of the game has you go on the standard hero's quest type game, get your sword, activate some towers, find some items and upgrades, and beat some bosses, and collect some keys. Then the game takes a turn, you turn into your ghost form self and must kill the final boss, but all your upgrades have been taken away. You then have to explain the same world you've been exploring except now it the ghost world to get your upgrades back. Once you get them back you can defeat the final boss way easier and beat the game. Sound pretty good, right? But that's not the turn in game that makes it so special. There is a secret in this game called the holy cross that elevates this game to a masterpiece. I won't explain what exactly it is but the secrets hidden underneath the games world that you don't even notice are incredible. The holy cross reminds me of the second half of Fez which is something I didn't think would have been able to be recreated again. For the combat the bosses are very fun and aren't total pushovers and take some effort. Uncovering the mysteries and secrets hidden in the game were an all time high experience in gaming in 2022 and I highly recommend this game to anyone who calls themselves a gamer. Expand

Everything about this game breathes old school and it's charming the entire way through. The usage of the manual really struck a chord with me, as I have been playing games since the dawn of time and remember when video games used to come with a manual and even had a page or two for notes where you would write down your secrets and memos. The manual plays an important part of the game so collect all of the pages to find the true ending of the game. That in itself is a task as you must unlock many secrets, many which are hidden throughout the game and even in the manual itself.

Gameplay is amazing. Exploring the isometric land really gives this game a Zelda 3 feeling to it.
The soundtrack is superb and adds to the atmosphere or situation happening on screen.
Graphics are a sleek polished modern take on a classic approach to adventure games.
Controls are perfect. However, when entering the "codes" to unlock certain doors and sections, if you are using an Xbox D-Pad, sometimes that can be tricky and inaccurate. Use your keyboard!

This game is charming through and through. I felt like a 10 year old again discovering something new and magical. The perfect blend of an homage to past games, nostalgia flooding me with it's gameplay, and just the way they built this world and story for us made it the perfect game. Even though I unlocked the happy ending, I want to keep playing and fully unlock everything that I can!

The only slight negatives I can think of is how you can lose where you need to go. I did find where to go easily with the use of the manual, but this isn't like Zelda or Dragon Quest where you speak to villagers and they point out where to go next. The unique language and scripture that appears on screen generally doesn't help. You can get lost easy, which can get frustrating sometimes. Sometimes the bosses can feel cheap, but I never spent more than 5 attempts on ANY of the bosses, this includes The Heir. Learn the patterns, change up your strategy and the bosses fall relatively easy.

Fast travel is not just for the lazy, it actually serves a purpose on Tunic. You'll need it to reach certain areas you wouldn't be able to before. Level up your stats as much as possible to help survive and do so by exploring everything. This game doesn't hold your hand and in that aspect it feels like the old school NES adventure games. Leave no stone unturned, check all nooks and crannies and gather up all of the items as you can.

Tunic is a must play gem. A nod to previous legends, a nod to current difficulty and a wonderful experience in a new setting that feels familiar. I loved every second of this game.

    Pros: Everything. Seriously.
Cons: It's sometimes hard to know where to go. It doesn't jump out at you easily. (however, the manual does a lot of heavy lifting for you without directly telling you where to go.)

I can get it that most modern players are used to be held by their hands when playing, and it's ok. But don't pretend that in a game intended to use old school mechanics. Is not the game for you, but saying is a cheap ripoff of zelda (when probably most of you don't even played the original 2d zeldas) is just gratuitous hate.

Tunic is a well made tribute to old 2d zelda games, where each element will help you understand more and progress in the game. It's not for sure an easy game, but it's not even a "hardcore elite" type game.
The graphics are particular and remind a lot of the recent remake of Link's Awakening. Seeing the nature of the game I guess it does it's job.

Good game to relax from bigger AAA titles.

This game is simply amazing! The art is beautiful, the progression and menu pages you find are extremely creative, enemies are challenging and the game doesnt hold your hand, which makes finding secret passages and learning how to advance very rewarding. 10/10, probably the best game I have played in awhile, it surprises me on every turn!

A very good Zelda-like game. The animations are really good, I like the graphic style. You can tell that a lot of attention to detail has been put into this game. Some bosses are though, but not to the level of Dark Souls like I've seen the comparison. All in all, a solid 30-hours indie game that is well worth the money.

Excellent game by a solo developer. Often achieves the quality you’d find in a legend of Zelda game made by a team of hundreds of people. The challenges are tough but meaningful and the progression elements and puzzle solving is interesting and reward exploration. The art style is great, clean, readable, cute, and overall I had an outstanding time playing this game.

You need to see this game with the eyes of a child to understand what you need to do. You're a fox, apparently alone in this island, you need to find the scattered manual pages to read and understand game mechanics. While you continue exploring the island youll find some hard foes that might be difficult to beat them unless you have leveled yourself up using the godess statues. I have been playing this game for 14 hours and I think I'm almost finished with it. The game has made me feel like a little girl playing TLoZ on my NES with my brother. You need to explore and keep your eyes open for hidden doors, puzzles and chests. Give this amazing game a try and you'll not be dissapointed, the game indeed is HARD. specially the quarry and the ghost zone. Now, talking about the design, its so flawless, its amazing how the team behind tunic got such a neat artstyle. the exploration is really good, and again, if youre stuck, remember to think like a little kid who just wants to have fun. Tunic really is something special and beneath the cutesy and simple appearance, this is a love letter to all classic exploration game fans. It also borrows inspiration from other games like the Souls games. The story its so good if you collect the manual and make it all fit together like in a big puzzle.

The soundtrack is also something to praise, as it blends magically with the visuals.

with my 14 in game hours and 240 out of 1000 gamerscore, I definitely will finish this game multiple times to get all those points.
in my opinion, this has been the best game so far in 2022.

Tunic is an adorably charming take on popular formulas with its own clever twists. While harkening back to old-school Zelda-style progression and Souls-like combat, Tunic also does quite a bit to distinguish itself from the inspirations it proudly wears on its sleeve.

There includes a wonderfully mysterious and beautifully drawn in-game manual, for the player to collect pages of throughout their journey (written almost entirely in a fictional language, that is actually translatable if you have the time). From scattered booklet pieces, the player will slowly gain info on everything from controls and mechanics, to story, to maps, goals, puzzles, and tons of secrets that will all help you on your way. Its seemingly 4th wall-breaking inclusion actually justifies itself extremely well, and never overstays its welcome despite how much you'll be using it. You'll find yourself bouncing back and forth between the surprisingly large open-labyrinthian levels, and the game manual, throughout its entire runtime - as its contents serve not as a crutch, but as a puzzle to figure out all on its own. Every inch of every page seems to allude to something for the player to discover.

The game is a challenge, and so is its combat. You will face a wide variety of locations, enemies, and bosses, and it will not hold your hand on anything - but it does so with a sense of intent and purpose. Tunic usually gives players just enough info to get by, with just a little expectation that you're the one who needs to "figure it out" on your own. And I found that kind of design philosophy both motivating, and endlessly captivating. Tunic is a game where even simple mechanics and weapons are learned through interpreting clues, so if in some instances one misses a piece of crucial info (either within the world or in the manual), it's possible they can find themselves stuck for a bit. But at the same time, it never feels like it's the game's fault - and usually with just a bit more patience, skill, exploration, or thinking, one can logic their way into a path forward (or possibly somewhere else).

Tunic is one of the most interesting, charming, and fun games I've played in a long time, and I'm happy that it exists.

Brilliant design where a game boldly decides to challenge and believe in the player to figure out their game and get the most out of it. Sure it may turn off some players - and reasonably so (so it's not for everyone), but the ones who get it, get it.

Combat is a good effort, some chaotic decisions made in terms of controls and leading to my only hit on this title, but you should definitely try your hand at this game. Too clever not to.

Words cannot do this game justice. It is one of the best adventures to come out over the past decade, and from an indie company to boot. Every bit of it is unique in its design and execution, and the atmosphere and music are pleasant to the eyes and ears. Being able to find hidden paths around every corner is incredibly engaging. The cryptic language that you have to decipher yourself is an unexpectedly welcome twist. The instruction manual in-game is filled with puzzles to decipher.

If you've been looking for a fun, adorable, and yet intriguing adventure game with plenty to explore and discover, Tunic will keep you satisfied the entire journey long. Time genuinely feels like it passes by slower as you play, with an hour feeling more like three. It is highly addictive and hard to put down once you get engrossed in its serene world.

Sadly, the only reason why I cannot give this game a 10 is the occasionally unbalanced level of difficulty of certain enemies, such as bosses. Tunic, on the surface, looks like a game that is simple and can be enjoyed by everyone, but when the second boss feels like a Dark Souls boss that can kill you in two seconds flat, it disrupts the pacing of the game and only serves to annoy you. The rest of the game is rather straightforward, and there are often times alternative means of resolving issues.
