2D Zelda + Dark Souls with lovely graphics and a lot of soul and creativity. My only gripe is the end boss and in general the last section. Compared to the rest of the game it was a tad too difficult and obsure.

I really love this game, the music, the art design and levels are all beautiful and it lulls me into a meditative state when I play it. Genuinely don't know why this is getting review bombed some people who ar3e giving this a 1/10 are being delusional. I give it a 10 to counteract the 0s and 1s, in reality this game is more like an 8.5-9.

There is far too little item and attacks diversity to feel like your character is progressing as an adventurer.
The graphics are alright but also very bland. The music is elevator-worthy at it's best. Some plot twist seem to be foreshadowed however there is no plot to twist.

Also don't get me started on the dark souls mechanics and difficulty. I clearly don't want to suffer them for the mediocrity of the game after the first 5 hours.

Tunic successfully manages to capture the nostalgic feeling of playing an early adventure game from your childhood, unfortunately often including the hours of wandering aimless searching for a way to progress forward. The idea of a metroidvania in which knowledge and understanding are your new tools is great in theory, but Tunic’s subpar combat and confusing progression get in the way of it being genuinely special. This game is amazing on so many levels.
Already the atmosphere and the music of the game are magnificent.

Then the game is constantly tickling the player's curiosity.
Indeed, in the game we do not know what to do and how to play.
It's a game filled with mystery constantly.

For me it's the best indie game I've done, even better than Hollow Knight.
MAKE TUNIC, this game is moving

I have problems with save bases in this game. I might die once or twice when I encounter a new enemy type, they should take that into account. But it's a waste of time and money to have to cross a long road and pass a few minor enemies every time I die. Other than that, it has a nice atmosphere and game dynamics.

Tunic is a combination of the best parts of The Legend of Zelda and Fez. While the game starts off as a standard action adventure Zelda-like game, it becomes something way more grand. You then have to explain the same world you've been exploring except now it the ghost world to get your upgrades back. Once you get them back you can defeat the final boss way easier and beat the game. Sound pretty good, right? But that's not the turn in game that makes it so special. There is a secret in this game called the holy cross that elevates this game to a masterpiece. I won't explain what exactly it is but the secrets hidden underneath the games world that you don't even notice are incredible. The holy cross reminds me of the second half of Fez which is something I didn't think would have been able to be recreated again. For the combat the bosses are very fun and aren't total pushovers and take some effort. Uncovering the mysteries and secrets hidden in the game were an all time high experience in gaming in 2022 and I highly recommend this game to anyone who calls themselves a gamer. Expand

Due to graphics the world doesn't give you right cues about possible paths. Sure there should be secret paths, but in general main paths should be easy to recognise. Next problem is the world layout feels chaotic, disorientating and doesn't flow. Finally controls and combat feels sluggish and isn't fun, and the stamina makes it even more tedious. A similar Zelda inspired game with way way better combat and design in general was HOB which I recommend over this one. Expand

Tunic is an adorably charming take on popular formulas with its own clever twists. While harkening back to old-school Zelda-style progression and Souls-like combat, Tunic also does quite a bit to distinguish itself from the inspirations it proudly wears on its sleeve.

There includes a wonderfully mysterious and beautifully drawn in-game manual, for the player to collect pages of throughout their journey (written almost entirely in a fictional language, that is actually translatable if you have the time). From scattered booklet pieces, the player will slowly gain info on everything from controls and mechanics, to story, to maps, goals, puzzles, and tons of secrets that will all help you on your way. Its seemingly 4th wall-breaking inclusion actually justifies itself extremely well, and never overstays its welcome despite how much you'll be using it. You'll find yourself bouncing back and forth between the surprisingly large open-labyrinthian levels, and the game manual, throughout its entire runtime - as its contents serve not as a crutch, but as a puzzle to figure out all on its own. Every inch of every page seems to allude to something for the player to discover.

The game is a challenge, and so is its combat. You will face a wide variety of locations, enemies, and bosses, and it will not hold your hand on anything - but it does so with a sense of intent and purpose. Tunic usually gives players just enough info to get by, with just a little expectation that you're the one who needs to "figure it out" on your own. And I found that kind of design philosophy both motivating, and endlessly captivating. Tunic is a game where even simple mechanics and weapons are learned through interpreting clues, so if in some instances one misses a piece of crucial info (either within the world or in the manual), it's possible they can find themselves stuck for a bit. But at the same time, it never feels like it's the game's fault - and usually with just a bit more patience, skill, exploration, or thinking, one can logic their way into a path forward (or possibly somewhere else).

Tunic is one of the most interesting, charming, and fun games I've played in a long time, and I'm happy that it exists.

But there isn't much souls dna here apart from the fact that it is mildly above average difficulty. Dying has very little consequence though, unlike Souls. The combat is largely Zelda/Metroidvania, not Souls.

One thing that is quite nice is the exploration and level design. However... it is also a bit disappointing. The game gives some degree of nonlinearity, but since certain levels require certain items, there is also a set way to tackle almost every part of the game. The level design is okay, but rarely mind blowing, and also its easy to not be able to see where you have to go simply from the perspective. Very annoying. Checkpoints are somewhat rare, which is nice, but the overall levels are small, and keep this from feeling like a grand adventure. I get it though, its an indie game.

Ultimately the only thing that makes this game quite cool and unique is the guide book. Its a very cool idea and brave in an era of everyone using game guides and whining about not getting all the info right away.

Birçok defa youtube'a bakmak zorunda kaldım.

However Tunic goes beyond it's influences and crafts itself it's unique and adorable world with a high level dose of nostalgia; offering players a good level of lore and secrets while charming you with a retro feel and it's clever puzzles.

In my opinion this game was designed around it's booklet, which is one of the main collectibles that you can find, in this beautifully drawn booklet you find how the game works and all the mechanics relevant to gameplay. After some reflection I realised that the game is a metroidvania were the key to progression is the knowledge that you gain about the game, from simple things as figuring out when you are invulnerable in a roll, to figuring out how to level up, the game gives you small bits and pieces of information for you to slowly make your way to the credits.

As much as I appreciated this mechanic in the game I did encounter some frustrating bits, this frustration was mostly due to how combat can at times feel unreliable. Dodges and guards do not always grant you safety as you'd expect, and the ever moving camera during boss fights made the hitboxes unreliable, I often took hits when I wasn't expecting it. This would be fine if the game was of a Zelda type difficulty, but the game throws at you quite difficult and challenging boss fights which made the frustration even worse. Apart from the boss fights the combat was mostly simplistic but functional, keeping you entertained but not feeling like the biggest focus of the game.

Apart from this small gripe, I do have to commend the game on it's artistry, music and level design. All of it was of the highest quality and the level design really shines with a particular emphasis on 2d worlds with 3d details that contain secrets and corners akin to games like Fez or Captain Toad. Another element that made me want to keep playing and get to the finish line in this game is it's pacing, the game did an excellent job for a metroidvania, I never felt like I had to massively backtrack or find my way, often times the path forward was quite clear or explained simply enough in the booklet. Props to the devs in making a game with such a great connection to retro games, but giving you all the ingame information for you to complete and 100% the game in a fun and slightly challenging manner.

I finished the game with it's true ending, took me around 14 hours to do so.

I'm a huge classic Zelda fan and loved the indie game Death's Door from last year. I'm about three hours in and incredibly disappointed. The game looks great, but the feel is all wrong. Your character moves like molasses and the combat is simply dreadful - your attacks knock enemies back, but you move incredibly slowly, meaning every encounter, you hit an enemy, then have to close distance to hit it again. You have a stamina meter and dodge a la Dark Souls, but the meter depletes incredibly quickly and replenishes very slowly, so I find myself reluctant to use it for anything. The first boss battle was a tedious slog because the boss moves way faster than you do, and if you try to use your roll (or run, which is initiated by rolling) to close distance, you'll run out of stamina, be unable to block, and take double damage.

The world design is... all right? There's something odd about the blocky art style though - it's very difficult to tell what connects to what. Several times I've been trying to walk across something, only to hit the 'shift perspective' button and realize that what I thought connected to the platform I was standing on is actually twelve tiles away.

There are lots of good ideas here but the game badly needed some playtesting to adjust the combat mechanics and flow. Unfortunately, I'm finding it incredibly tedious and not fun at all. If you're looking for a great Zelda-esque title that incorporates some elements of Dark Souls with a compelling story and fun combat, play Death's Door.

Expand

Words cannot do this game justice. It is one of the best adventures to come out over the past decade, and from an indie company to boot. Every bit of it is unique in its design and execution, and the atmosphere and music are pleasant to the eyes and ears. Being able to find hidden paths around every corner is incredibly engaging. The cryptic language that you have to decipher yourself is an unexpectedly welcome twist. The instruction manual in-game is filled with puzzles to decipher.

If you've been looking for a fun, adorable, and yet intriguing adventure game with plenty to explore and discover, Tunic will keep you satisfied the entire journey long. Time genuinely feels like it passes by slower as you play, with an hour feeling more like three. It is highly addictive and hard to put down once you get engrossed in its serene world.

Sadly, the only reason why I cannot give this game a 10 is the occasionally unbalanced level of difficulty of certain enemies, such as bosses. Tunic, on the surface, looks like a game that is simple and can be enjoyed by everyone, but when the second boss feels like a Dark Souls boss that can kill you in two seconds flat, it disrupts the pacing of the game and only serves to annoy you. The rest of the game is rather straightforward, and there are often times alternative means of resolving issues.

Everything about this game breathes old school and it's charming the entire way through. The usage of the manual really struck a chord with me, as I have been playing games since the dawn of time and remember when video games used to come with a manual and even had a page or two for notes where you would write down your secrets and memos. The manual plays an important part of the game so collect all of the pages to find the true ending of the game. That in itself is a task as you must unlock many secrets, many which are hidden throughout the game and even in the manual itself.

Gameplay is amazing. Exploring the isometric land really gives this game a Zelda 3 feeling to it.
The soundtrack is superb and adds to the atmosphere or situation happening on screen.
Graphics are a sleek polished modern take on a classic approach to adventure games.
Controls are perfect. However, when entering the "codes" to unlock certain doors and sections, if you are using an Xbox D-Pad, sometimes that can be tricky and inaccurate. Use your keyboard!

This game is charming through and through. I felt like a 10 year old again discovering something new and magical. The perfect blend of an homage to past games, nostalgia flooding me with it's gameplay, and just the way they built this world and story for us made it the perfect game. Even though I unlocked the happy ending, I want to keep playing and fully unlock everything that I can!

The only slight negatives I can think of is how you can lose where you need to go. I did find where to go easily with the use of the manual, but this isn't like Zelda or Dragon Quest where you speak to villagers and they point out where to go next. The unique language and scripture that appears on screen generally doesn't help. You can get lost easy, which can get frustrating sometimes. Sometimes the bosses can feel cheap, but I never spent more than 5 attempts on ANY of the bosses, this includes The Heir. Learn the patterns, change up your strategy and the bosses fall relatively easy.

Fast travel is not just for the lazy, it actually serves a purpose on Tunic. You'll need it to reach certain areas you wouldn't be able to before. Level up your stats as much as possible to help survive and do so by exploring everything. This game doesn't hold your hand and in that aspect it feels like the old school NES adventure games. Leave no stone unturned, check all nooks and crannies and gather up all of the items as you can.

Tunic is a must play gem. A nod to previous legends, a nod to current difficulty and a wonderful experience in a new setting that feels familiar. I loved every second of this game.

    Pros: Everything. Seriously.
Cons: It's sometimes hard to know where to go. It doesn't jump out at you easily. (however, the manual does a lot of heavy lifting for you without directly telling you where to go.)

Brilliant design where a game boldly decides to challenge and believe in the player to figure out their game and get the most out of it. Sure it may turn off some players - and reasonably so (so it's not for everyone), but the ones who get it, get it.

Combat is a good effort, some chaotic decisions made in terms of controls and leading to my only hit on this title, but you should definitely try your hand at this game. Too clever not to.

So much could have been fixed by just giving a small amount of character development and motivation.
Using so many Zelda tropes but missing out this absolutely vital part of the start of any adventure game makes the experience feel hollow and dull.
Why am I playing the game? Why should I fight anything? Why should I solve any of these puzzles?
It's a fundamental part of games design and without it the entire experience doesn't click at a basic level.
It's perhaps to be expected that a single developer isn't going to make something that Nintendo could, but when it's just a small piece of games design that would only take the developer a few weeks to implement and that would make an incredible difference to the overall product quality, it just feels like such a huge, unfortunate missed opportunity.
As things stand, if you've never played a good adventure/ARPG game, then Tunic is a serviceable, if underwhelming, introduction to the genre. If you go into this expecting Zelda or anything else in the genre made by an experienced team, then all the hype is going to leave you feeling very underwhelmed.

I have been playing this game for 14 hours and I think I'm almost finished with it. The game has made me feel like a little girl playing TLoZ on my NES with my brother. You need to explore and keep your eyes open for hidden doors, puzzles and chests. Give this amazing game a try and you'll not be dissapointed, the game indeed is HARD. specially the quarry and the ghost zone. Now, talking about the design, its so flawless, its amazing how the team behind tunic got such a neat artstyle. the exploration is really good, and again, if youre stuck, remember to think like a little kid who just wants to have fun. Tunic really is something special and beneath the cutesy and simple appearance, this is a love letter to all classic exploration game fans. It also borrows inspiration from other games like the Souls games. The story its so good if you collect the manual and make it all fit together like in a big puzzle.

The soundtrack is also something to praise, as it blends magically with the visuals.

The artstyle is really nice, but there's not much asset variety and it all just melts into a blob of bland earthy greens and browns after some time. The interesting ideas, such as finding and building a manual to the game in the game by finding pages of it scattered around the map are all overshadowed by the really really bad game design of the main gameplay loop.

From soulslike games, we have the combat relying on learning enemy behavior, timing and precise dodging, except the combat also consists of just one weapon with one three-strike combo and a handful of abilities of questionable balance and usefulness. In addition, you can literally just save at bonfires, and it respawns all enemies, which is an absolute pain, because:

From early Zelda games, it takes linearity and backtracking, and goes absolutely overboard especially in the backtracking part - from the very first minute, I could see paths that I could not access, but it was clear I would get to them later after getting a sword and cutting the surrounding small vegetation down in a suitably Zelda-like fashion, and that would be fine, except these additional paths were largely just shortcuts or additional passages to the places I was already traversing, meaning that their use was to literally allow me to get back to the places where I already was, and this was proven true soon after. Of course, I had then to again participate in the same unsatisfactory combat against the, mostly simplistic and boring, enemies I already killed before, and after next puzzle, I had to go back and do it again to reach a next path, and so on and on.

A lot of people seem to like the game, so most likely you, the one reading this word-vomit, will enjoy it too, but for me, I just can't see a reason why to play it over Zelda or Dark Souls games, because it wouldn't really stand on its own as either of those, much less a proper combination of them.

This game is a masterpiece, containing perfect gameplay mechanics and staying true to it's main inspiration. To those who say it copies "Zelda", you obviously knew nothing of the game. TUNIC has been my best indie experience of the year so far. It looks like a mix of classic Zelda, Souls-like and FEZ. It's that kind of game you're always rewarded for exploring. The game manual/map is also very creative. 10/10

Man, this game is fantastic. The art direction is to be congratulated and the gameplay is also very good. It's worth the experience and you can see that he is very inspired by zelda and dark souls.
I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Zelda-inspired games with a touch of difficulty.

Basicly this game in boring, combat is very unsatisfying, there is to many puzzles and the puzzles just feel like road blocks to make the game longer...There is tons and tons of repetition..Sure the world is pretty for a bit, but there is almost no variety in scenery or art.. I could go on , ...Don't trust the Journos, most of the big sites and buddies with the Dev, which is yet another concerning trend with Indies..

This is a very high 9, but not a 10 because the combat isn't perfect. It's pretty good, don't get me wrong, but it's not perfect. that said, This game is good. Really, really good. The game is fun, challenging, and can be hard at times. I enjoy figuring out the mechanics and getting the feeling of accomplishment for completing a fight or figuring out a puzzle that had me stumped. The game heavily draws from Zelda and Dark Souls games and has a wonderful art style that I enjoyed greatly.

Gorgeous art, solid controls. it really is very similar to a Zelda game and deserve all the praise to follow with great competence so big of a shadow. To the developer, don't mind the haters. You made alone something comparable to some of the great games of all times

Tunic is a wonderful Dark Souls alternative that fails to strike a fair balance.

Tunic is truly a masterpiece of game design: a modern day Zelda with all the complexity it needs to thrive with gamers today. If you like running around a beautiful fantasy land, sword fighting fantasy baddies, or translating ancient languages, Tunic will have something for you to sink your teeth into. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend picking this foxy little gem up.

If you were looking for a foxy answer to the question "What would happen if Zelda was a Soulslike?" (I don't know why you're looking in a foxy way), you found it.
