Whether played solo or with two non-compulsory local partners, Trinity Trigger channels the enjoyment of a ‘90s-era action role-playing game. From interacting with each town’s NPCs to delving into dungeons, almost every part of the game distills a sense of enjoyment.

I'm enjoying my time with it on the steam deck. Gameplay feels good but I can see how it could get monotonous later on. Graphics are a little meh but have some charm. From what I've heard the OST is pretty alright so far. The story is simple enough as well, easy to follow and understand overall. The game has couch coop up to 3 players total at once in-game. And coming from someone who hates English dubs for JRPG games or type games, this games dub is actually not too horrible.

Performance on Deck was a bit weird. I was getting some really bad fps dips and hitches which was easily fixed by adjusting the refresh rate to anything but 60, so I lowered it to 58hz and it feels like 60 and doesn't hitch anymore. One bug I encountered was the game on launch was running at native 1280x800 but since i was having fps issues I changed it from that to 720 and even lower while tinkering. After doing so 1280x800 disappeared and is no longer an option in the settings so I'm stuck at 720p. Not a huge deal, but weird.

My MAIN complaint is the DLC. To get the full experience you either pay $50 plus tax and then buy the "Extra Episode" packs after you've completed the base game to see if it's worth buying based on how much fun you had with the game. OR you buy the Deluxe Edition for $60 plus tax for the "Extra Episode Set DLC, and the Weapon Set DLC."

Overall the game is a fun, campy feeling action combat JRPG with charming in-game art, and pretty visual novel character art. As well as some fully animated anime cutscenes with a painting type look to it.
