"I've been playing Trackmania since 2006, starting with the ESWC world cup. It was a beautiful, simple, crowded, glorious, and exciting game. I played it for years and migrated to Nations Forever, and then to United.

With Nations Forever, the devs made their first evil move by turning the game into a painful experience for "unpaid" account owners. They had to wait as a spectator for one map after every four, and couldn't even chat during that period. So if you have a team training, or WR hunting, you had to go through this process every 5th map or restart and lose your heat and focus. Terrible.

Somewhere around this time, if I'm not mistaken, Ubisoft bought Nadeo, the developer.

Many years later, Trackmania 2 was released. It was somewhat more rigid in terms of content, but it showed signs of fragmentation. The game base launcher was separated into sections for different launches for each game. The menus became somewhat cluttered, but it was still navigable. It was buggy at first, but they fixed it over time. However, forced shadows raised a lot of concerns among players and even made some tracks unplayable.

And now, Trackmania 2020. It was advertised as great, with a serious-looking art style. However, Ubisoft turned this installment into a yearly subscription. Yes, you could still play for free, but you would be prevented from many aspects of the game. It's awful because even if you pay for it, like me, there is almost nothing else you can do but to mingle with poorly designed and splattered content, clogged menus, and very hard-to-navigate content, literally IPTV style menus, many weird stuff here and there, clubs, inexplicable competitions all over the place where you can't tell whether they are official or not, a handful of internet streamers' names everywhere, in-game ads that are over the top, childish texture mapping, very bad texture choice, and sometimes players can't even tell whether they are on ice, magnet, or plastic surfaces. Even the official soundtrack feels like it was made for teaching babies their first PC game. It's a very, very awful experience, and players are separated from each other. Chat is restricted to subscription payers, and you can't even have the glorious, colorful, and creative nicknames you used to have. Your only choice is your default Ubisoft account name that appears in plain white on the scoreboard. The ranking system is also obnoxious, as your ranking is determined by the skill of the other two players in your team in a 3v3 match.

There are only two good sides to this game. The first is the default car skins, which are good and show effort. The other is the Royal mode, where you can at least have a little fun, but that's all. I've subscribed for a standard account, and I thought there was more to it with CLUB access subscription, because the game seemed so dead and literally a soup of unsorted content. I have paid 3x the amount I've paid for the standard access, YES, they still charge full amount even if you have paid for standard just before. Ubisoft is THAT hungry about this game. I was wrong... literally NOTHING changed other than having access to CLUB content, which are basically custom in-game rooms that has no damn specialty ever. I felt ripped right from the beginning.

The official maps are plain and dreadful, and all the other ordinary map content is shovelfeeded into your face. There are clubs, even they do not know what the hell they are good for. Most of the time in gameplay, your brain twists, even if you know the map you're playing, you actually hesitate in each occasion for there is uncertainty and unnecessary stuff going around everywhere. Devs stole many ideas from DISTANCE, and got the Trackmania very close to that childish car soccer game, killing its characteristic lines.

In conclusion, this game is dead, soulless, and when it died, it shat and vomited many colorful adversaries. Ubisoft is in charge of killing another good franchise."

The thing that really annoyed me & made me bother write this review is that, after paying for standard access, I find out that spectating any ghost is included only in the club addition of the game. And spectating ghosts is a frustrating, buggy mess to begin with, so I'm not paying 30€/year for that.
I'm not a serious TM player or anything but spectating best times seems like a core feature that should have been included with standard access or even starter free access, as it is a feature that would mostly cater to new players.
The game feels like a very bad mobile freemium scam app, even after paying for std. access.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have only played TMNF and TMUF before this game, but this is everything I could want in a racing game. Ridiculously unlimited track editor, seasonal campaign, sure there’s Standard Access’s subscription fee, but it’s worth it. Say this game was priced at $80, and then you only used it for 6 years. You’d be wasting $20! With the subscription, you can customize how much you want to pay, to match how long you will play it for. I guess there’s also Club Access, but at least it’s not as stupid as Nintendo. $24.99 for just online play? At least Nadeo’s Club Access is only $5 more, and it gives so much more than just online play. Club joining, club creation, club map packs, club skins, custom skin editor…

Some of you may be angry that they added ice and bobsleigh blocks, because they’re hard to control. Well, here’s my answer: Just get good!

No, seriously. Ice and bobsleigh are very technical, and you shouldn’t expect to master them in the beginning. Concentrate on beginner techniques, like drifting and air braking, and maybe work on your racing lines, before attempting to master these two surfaces. They’re not “impossible to control” as some of the idiots out there might say. They’re very technical, what with ice slides, 360’s, brake taps, etc. But they’re not that bad once you get used to them.

Here’s a tip for bobsleigh: Start a turn aimed pretty high, and occasionally press left to stop your car from tilting too far down, resulting in an awkward and sideways landing.

For ice, even I’m not that good at it, so I can’t give a professional tip. For an ice slide, steer farther than you think you should, but then start holding the opposite direction to stop your rotation. It’s hard to master, but it works.

Any sort of game crashes you might have are just a result of bad hardware on your part. It is a very resource-heavy game, and even my gaming laptop automatically turns on the fan to stop it from overheating while you’re playing it.

Hope this gives a sense of reason to the current back and forth discussion about this game. Just cause it looks and functions differently, doesn't mean it’s bad. The expanded editor and refurbished graphics really show how far Nadeo has come in their development process. I can’t stress this enough: Don’t hate because it’s different, accept it because it’s new.

    Take care,

The amount you get for what you are paying for is well worth it. 10$ a year for 100 official maps and access to 365 community maps, infinite club campaigns and many different gamemodes is just more than enough. I've played/bought all the games of Trackmania and I have to say that one of my favourite things was the editor. Now, it seems that I need to pay each year to build new tracks which, in fact, it looks like a scam (please, don't get me wrong, I would pay if it was the full-game). I can't stand a game which is based on a subscription to get all the offline features.

Graphics are clean and encourage people to make clean tracks and not that usual cluster**** which was common in Stadium before. There are more abilities for mapping and editing which results in a huge amount of amazing maps with a lot custom blocks and unique appearance. (yeah you know: Midnight Metropolis and stuff like that.) The game has a new section named "track/cup of the day" where those community made maps are implemented into the game.

The only downside i see to previous Stadium environments (apart from subscription model) are the flat surfaces - that means grass is just green, there is actually no more grass on grass. So in dark spots you cant tell the difference between grass, dirt, ice or concrete.

Overall i again got addicted by the newest trackmania and would recommend to buy the 10€ starter pass. I don't see the benefit of the 3x more expensive club access. (With starter access you get the map editor, track of the day section and ofc you can download and play any map from TMX. Its worth the money.)

They added a whole bunch of new blocks and modifiers, but the extra variery does not alleviate the fact that they make the racing experince worse. Most of the new modifiers try to add new mechanics at the expense of removing control from your car eg. low friction surfaces, no steering, no engine, fragile. Ice blocks are the worst thing to be added to the game, they feel TERRIBLE; I loath any time I encounter ice on a track. The menus are still rough and not improved over any passed TM games.

The most eggregious part is the pricing: the game is priced at AAA pricing for a game that is definitely not a AAA game. Not only that, but it's subscription based, so that AAA cost only gets you a 3 year subscription.

Ubisoft apparently tried to defend it by saying "You're not paying for a subscription, you're paying for the game for a year." Last I checked, that's a very definition of a subscription, idiots. "Oh no, it's not loot boxes, it's surprise mechanics." That's how tone deaf they sound in defending this scummy business model, when features shouldn't be locked behind a subscription for a game like this one, such as advanced map editing, etc., for a game that I can play locally on my machine and don't have to upload tracks for. I mean just look how egregious this is. Ubisoft is calling it DLC on the store page. If it's DLC, it shouldn't be locked behind a subscription. That's like telling me, "Oh, we see you bought this game and enjoy it! It would be awful if you lost access to it soon so pay us to keep playing your locally stored copy of your beloved game!" Eff off Ubisoft. What a scummy, scam-ridden, disgusting practice.

I've uninstalled Trackmania and cannot recommend it at all. I will not go back to this version, this supposed "reboot" of the Trackmania franchise/series. Folks should just stick with the old Trackmania game like Nations Forever, where you have permanent access to your rightly purchased content.

The trackmania series frustrated me that I hadn't heard about it sooner. Watching your track ranking improve is about as addicting as crack cocaine. This new entry does some things extremely well while doing other things not so well.

    positives:
The gameplay is unmatched by anything. There are only 2 rules: collect all checkpoints in any order, and finish. This simplicity not only makes the game easy to understand from newbies but it also allows experienced players to get creative with how they tackle the maps. The physics feel spot on and consistent (apart from reactor boost). They aren't mario kart arcadey but it isn't gran turismo either. It's right in the middle which I wish more games did. Your racing lines matter more than any other video game without haiving that pesky realism where you are constantly having to manage oversteer / understeer and such. The track editor is no doubt the best improvement over previous trackmania games and it has boosted my creativity ten fold with the ability to block mix and free place blocks. The ability to place a checkpoint and restart from there everytime while building a track makes me wonder how I lived without it. Track of the day has also been a great addition and that has been where I have sunk a lot of time.

    negative:
unfortunately there is also quite a lot of negative with this game. I was quite surprised that on day one, the leaderboards didn't work and the 5 hours I had spent (yes 5 hours) grinding on track of the day for that one pb was not counted and I got no credit for anything. The netcode of this game has seemingly gotten better since release but it still has a ton of work that needs to be done to it. For now I would only recommend this game if you are looking for a solo experience with leaderboards. You will also need a decent pc to run this game (I have gtx960 + fx 6300 @ 60hz and I play on 720p lowest settings @ 150fps otherwise if the game drops below 100fps, the input lag gets really severe). The UI is also a step back from previous games with missing features such as a server browser that displays basic server information.

The pricing model is a bit of a Nog but I can't really see how it could be avoided. Some people say mtx would fix it but that would most likely break the community content creation aspect of trackmania. Others say that a one time payment would fix the issue but that would force nadeo to make yet another trackmania game which is probably the last thing that the series needs (there are a lot of tm games). Imo standard should be more generous with giving club access but other than that, I can live with it.

As long as you ignore the glaring technical faults with this game, the gameplay is amazing and I think even your dog would enjoy it

As a Trackmania fan from the first hour I was heavily looking froward to the free-to-play release this year. The problem of this game is, that if you don´t pay, you get an unfinished game. The fun lasts only for the few hours long campaign, the rest is classic but very repetitive rework by the publisher. Sadly just recycling, but if you´re new with this franchise, enjoy!

I don't care about your free Nadeo servers. People like me can just create their own like we always do. It's cheaper for you and it lets us better servers, because they do not handle the load.
The development was clearly rushed at the end to be ready for the Zerator's TM Cup. Cam is buggy, the car is less powerful than a wooden car (Trial, RPG are unplayable now). The menus are awful. Trackmania was made by its community, they stay forever. I checked today and on Steam, there are still 300 people playing 12 years old games, and their still sharing videos on Youtube of the previous game.
You tried to justify the yearly price by 2 things:
    - new content, we'll have 4 campaigns a year of 25 poor maps. Whereas the community is creating maps: there are 533 232 maps today on TMNF Tm-exchange. Is more than 100 tracks a day over 12 years.
    - keep the development of TM alive.
We keep Trackmania alive for years. Don't take your players as whales.
You told us that you wanted to make TM an esports game, why did you choose this DA? And this cam 3? The game is less readable for the player and the viewer.
I'm not going to buy this game at full price every year.
Look what Paradox said: "Our DLC model is based on the idea that you pay for new content after the full game release. This helps to finance the further development of the game, which is of gain for all players." You were not honest.
I'll keep playing the previous TM, keep my server up. But I won't pay every year for a game, that I play sporadically.
Imagine if I paid 30€ every year for TMUF and TM2. It would have cost me 570€ and I keep playing those games.
I like TrackMania, we made it together, you wanted to divorce.

This game is ubisofts latest scam. I would gladly bought it, but i can't. The only option to play multiplayer and build tracks is to "subscribe" for one year. I miss the days when you actually owned the games you play.

Subscription based garbage. Remember when Trackmania Nations was free? The "free" mode in this game is worthless by the way.

Don't listen to the negative reviews, it's bombed by people who did not understand what the annual cost of the game means.

You pay 10 bucks for a FULL YEAR access to the online play (with you friends & random people), and you retain PERMANENT access to all maps unlocked during that year (400+ maps). Also permanent access to the advanced map editor. That's nothing compared to a lot of

Plus you can thoroughly try the game for free in singleplayer (with some online integrations like rankings and ghost players).

The game is great, the best racing game both for casuals and pros. Super fun, great community and Nado are good developers who are close to their community and offer them amazing tools and support.

Apart from servers and a short campaign, the developers have not really prepared anything for the release. Most of the content of the new Trackmania is a reworking of old, and the rest is created by fans... again. In fact, Nadeo and Ubisoft only provide servers and features to meet the user's creative needs. On the other hand, this is what Trackmania has always been. However, there are still questions: how the studio will develop the game further and whether the subscription model will pay off. We haven't received any answers to them yet.

Trackmania can be incredibly fun, but some awkward track design and camera issues can really dampen the experience.

Trackmania excels at everything fans fell in love with years ago: a true race with dozens of bizarre tracks and high speeds. The game unfortunately comes with a disclaimer: the different subscriptions, menus and leaderboards are very confusing. That is especially bad for new players, while Trackmania is such a good idea on paper.
