To the moon es esplendido, atrapante y cuenta una historia muy linda. Disfrute mucho jugarlo y controlando los dos protagonistas que me cayeron muy bien. Ansioso por jugar el 2.

If you enjoyed Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and maybe Undertale, this is definitely worth a look.

Such a beautiful story. I love how they handled the ending. It was a good ending, but there is still so much underlying sadness. "River died thinking Johnny forgot. Johnny died thinking he never forgot".

Expand

There are those crying conservatives that say "this isn't a game" because "it's just story". However, this "no-game" involved much more than many AAA "games" out there. I play because I seek emotions. And if you seek emotions while playing, then play this GAME.

I loved the premise. Now comes the cool part: you have to analyze Johnny's memories, understand them, and make the necessary changes. But the process is done backwards. You begin by analyzing what is most recent, because it is easier to access in his mind; going towards the one that is deeper, with everything divided into layers.

Many times we are perplexed with Johnny's certain attitudes and choices, where each layer we enter into brings new mysteries around his relationship with his dead wife, River, who also has mysterious and intriguing attitudes (which also has a good, explanation) and also around his own personality.

It is a game full of adventure, tragedy, mystery and an ideal dose of humor with comic references to games, movies and anime, like Street Fighter, Matrix and Dragon Ball Z; beyond the relationship full of sarcasm, and friendship, between Rosalene and Neil. A game that makes us reflect about life, the problems that we go through, how they affect us and what we can do to adapt and overcome them. Seriously, it's so well built, that a trivial thing dictates in the first 5 minutes of play, will connect with something at the end and blow your mind! A semiotic analysis of this game would be a full plate for an academic.

I'm here reflecting on the experience that this game has given me and the mix of emotions he made me feel, with charismatic characters and their attractive story (which is their strongest point). I may not have wept with the game, which I hardly do; but my heart was tight! I think that have playing from the start to finish with my girlfriend must have been a factor that made the experience even better, as we discussed theories about what was happening (and she did cry with the game). And it's a short game, we finish it in just under 5 hours. But even so, the experience was surreal! Do not connect the number of hours played into the fun, connect to the experience that the game provides you! Let's remember another short game that brings a fantastic experience? JOURNEY! And it is worth mentioning that "To The Moon", game made in RPG MAKER, has 81 points in Metascore! More points than too much "Triple A" what we have around.

And one more thing: the story and script of this game would turn into a movie, or a miniseries, easily. With the right to be called masterpiece, if it is well produced, after all we have examples of the film industry **** over game franchises and books that were almost ready to make sucess on the movie theater.

To conclude, I can only say two things: play that game and be happy with this experience that goes beyond expectations.

It's a pretty unassuming game, and there are lots of indications throughout the game that this was made by a very small studio - the sprites are all pretty cliche, the environments are pretty standard, and the movement is often janky. But despite all of that, few games have ever touched me in the way that this game did. The story is truly out of this world (no pun intended).

"9/10 - This is a very good game, and you need to play it. Period." - Bruce Stracci

Where do I begin to even describe this masterpiece of an RPG/Visual Novel?

I guess I should start by giving some context: This game made an impact right away on my first playthrough a couple of years ago. Something in regards to the story, pace, humor, and how everything is perfectly crafted.

I've recently re-played the entire saga, in light of the arrival of "Impostor Factory". The sheer amount of details that can easily be missed, may become important later on in future games.

"To the Moon" is, in my opinion at least, the best game of this franchise so far. To even talk about the story in this review would be a disservice to how it was presented to me by Kan Gao and his amazing team, so I won't go into much detail over it. It's one of those games that needs to be played before you pass away. It's THAT GOOD.

In regards to the minisodes: They are two isolated but very lore-important chapters that can be easily ignored by the player. I think it's MANDATORY to play them, before exploring both sequels "Finding Paradise" and "Impostor Factory" - But perhaps Minisode 2 spoils a LOT of the fun for the future installments of the series (This is especially noticeable in "IF"). I still will recommend playing them despite everything.

Now, for the more technical part:

Story: 9.5/10 - This is the strongest part of the game. To The Moon can be played in less than two hours if you are that focused, however, it's best to take the time and take it easy with this. Johnny and River's story is a tragic one, and the slower you take it, the further you understand the main conflict and motivation of his final wish. This is half a point away from the perfect score, however, as I feel the story at times can be too reliant on "comedic" moments where it kind of drives away the urgency of the plot.

Gameplay: 6/10 - Oof, just OOF. Let me be clear: I'm familiar with RPGMaker games, and with similarly-created RPG titles. An RPG maker game can have both nice gameplay, and a visually stunning graphics, TODAY (titles like Omori, Lisa the Painful, Grimms Hollow came with a more powerful version of the engine) For the time this first title was created, gameplay wise is very similar to older games of it's era, considering titles such as Yume Nikki and Lisa the First, to name a few. If I were to judge with modern standarts, this score would be lower, but cosidering that this game is more than a decade old, and first came out in 2011, I think it's decent enough. The minimalistic style, lack of combat areas, difficult navigation at times, and certain bugs that I encountered during my second playthough didn't make it an enjoyable experience. The most FRUSTRATING aspect of this game are two moments that I can remember: The first being the frustrating "memento activation minigame" which I think adds nothing but extending unnecessarily the game and breaking the pace of this game - this mechanic was further improved in "FP", with the same problems, and outright removed in "IF", so I think it was really unnecessary. The second moment highlights one of the biggest flukes in terms of gameplay: This was SUCH A MISSING OPPORTUNITY, GAMEPLAY WISE! I still think that the game would greatly benefit from some sort of combat mechanics. Overall, It could be so much better, but it's understandable given the context.

Characters: 10/10 - The main cast (Eva & Neil) have such chemistry together. Their back and forth, not only as playful banter, but also in the more "serious" moments of the story is such a delight to see, and the way they interact with both the patient and the world is what sold me from literally the opening scene. The supporting cast has also a lot of "believability" to them, and I could immerse myself right in the story. This also applies to the minisodes, where we get to meet some of their co-workers and see the relations from a different perspective. Nothing else to add, since that would ruin the fun of the first gameplay for the uninitiated ones.

Original Sound Track (OST) - 10/10 - Also a perfect score. Not only the ambient music mind you, but the experience really compliments the experience - Fun fact: A couple of years ago, and 5-6 years after my first and only playthrough of this game, a friend of mine played "For River/To the Moon" (the main theme of this game) just for fun at the piano. I instantly recognized the song, despite not having any contact with the game in a long time. It's THAT GOOD.

Accessibility: 9/10 - Yes, this is a very easy game to pick up, especially if you are new to videogames, or just a casual player. Since it can take you no more than 4 hours if you take your time to complete the main story, and right now is a very cheap game to get, it's very accessible.

Overall review: 9/10 - This is a very good game, and you need to play it. Period.

“To the Moon” was a very frustrating videogame for me. This is because, although it had some of the most beautiful/poignant moments of any game I had ever played, this was almost ruined by other factors.

Technically, “To the Moon” is a science-fiction, as two of the four primary characters in the game are employed as memory editors. The other two characters of interest are an old man, who is dying, and his wife, who at the time of the story is already deceased. The dying man’s memory is being edited. The memory editing is the most outlandish story element. The vast majority of the story is fairly down to earth. The story revolves around a great secret/mystery, which the now deceased wife tried to tell her husband before she died.

The parts of the story which are supposed to be sad are wonderful, but this is damaged by two other facts: 1) the story is sad in a way which it seems like it was not intended to be, and 2) there are some very obnoxious elements which were intended to be humorous.

The dialog from young male memory editor in the beginning is incredibly annoying. It was apparent that the game creators intended for him to so-over-the-top, that he was funny. However, I have a very different sense of humor. It got so bad in the beginning, very nearly stopped playing the game.

The second disappointment relies on the fact that the old dying man is the character to whom the mystery being revealed would matter the most. However, the truth is never revealed to him. It is a bit like reading a murder mystery novel, where you learn from reading the book “who dunnit,” but the primary detective figure in the book never finds out. The mystery in this game is not quite so malicious as a murder, however, there is very much a secret as if it were a murder mystery. There is a consolation in that after the old man’s memory is edited, he still remembers the best parts of his marriage, but he never learns what his wife was trying to tell him. Perhaps even the memory that his wife was trying to tell him something is removed entirely; it’s not clear.

I am more frustrated than disappointed, because I never a view a book, or game, or anything as “cast in stone.” Somebody could always modify it and republish. Although it is not a very old videogame, I hope that “to the moon” will remade with the following changes: 1) some of the male character’s obnoxious early-game dialog is toned down, and 2) it would be nice at the end if the mystery is revealed to the old man.

It is frustrating to know that neither of these changes will likely ever occur. I imagine that the game will be entered into the annals of great works of art, and never be touched again except to occasionally be played/viewed/read in its original state by some art historian of the future.

“To The Moon” is one amazing story game. I can’t believe it was made in RPG Maker. Again, this shows the engine can create great games.

Unlike “Finding Paradise”, there are more “game-y” aspects, like puzzles, and I was stuck at some points. However, I keep on, since I wanted to know how the story end. It’s also rare to have an autistic character in gaming, so I was cool with River.

To The Moon's charming sense of humor and unabashed ease with tossing around pop culture references (from Dr. Who and Animorphs down to Dragon Ball Z) kept the serious, and at times quite gloomy overtones from feeling too self-serious. And so, with John and River's tale being told, restructured and sent to the moon in a heartfelt and memorable way; I am able to walk away from To The Moon satisfied, and looking forward to the next installment in this world.

If you're into having your tears tugged at, this will definitely be a change from nights spent curling up on the couch spectating those romance flicks that no one else gets. If you're someone who winds up stuck with the aforementioned individual, originally promised beer and tricked into the awkward Kleenex duty, no guilt will be harbored from missing out.
