Psychological horror game Those Who Remain features jump scares with a few too many jagged edges.

An unfortunately anonymous experience, sometimes even unnerving when it ends up in the maze of trial and error.

Those Who Remain tries to generate horror but quickly loses strength due to its clunky narrative and repetitive and uninspired puzzles.

Those Who Remain deserves major points for creativity of ideas and premise. The title holds a lot of promise, but ultimately fails to deliver a memorable, cohesive performance. Because puzzles force players to run back and forth to find solutions which can take time away from immersion into this world. Those Who Remain is a title committed to psychological horror, but has self-sabotaged with mediocre gameplay. It lovingly sets up a thrilling ambiance, but doesn’t allow players to fully experience the title. The use of various ideas like alternate dimensions and ever-persistent shadow people are great, but aren’t executed well. Additionally, characters are not uniquely fleshed out and don’t support the flat story that held a lot of promise. Characters feel generic to the point where it’s difficult to even like them. Edward is truly an everyman but doesn’t have enough uniqueness to capture attention. Even the “choices” made don’t ultimately make drastic changes you may have been hoping for. I wanted to like Those Who Remain, but it failed to capture my attention as a standout indie horror.

Those Who Remain begins with a cool premise that can keep it intriguing for a while, but that quickly fizzles out. There's just not much reason to stay and finish the game out, despite the fact that it can be completed in a few hours if you can figure each puzzle out quickly.

Overall, Those Who Remain is fine. Just fine. It’s not terrible and doesn’t deserve to be hate-played or mocked or anything like that. Edward is a fine protagonist, the eerie atmosphere starts out strong and devolves to fine, and the gameplay is fine. I’m sure a lot of work went into this experience (I say this a lot, but I mean it), but unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be anything keeping this game safe from the gaping maw of irrelevance.

Although it often looks cool and has some strong level design, Those Who Remain is tedious, and loaded with boring item hunts and frustrating "stealth" sections.

A clumsy, sluggish and uninspired horror adventure.

Though the narrative and moral questions presented are interesting, this horror game is marred by frustratingly tedious gameplay and lacking mechanics.

Even though Those Who Remain may awash you in good old-fashioned terror and ingenuity for a few brief periods, these are mostly lost in a sea of frustration and generic horror metaphors.

This game looks like 2010 game (which it is), not 2020. Not sure why they say it is released now.

"Those Who Remain" is a 5 hour game that is about 5 hours too long.

Incompetently designed from start to finish with gameplay mostly consisting of walking into a room, turning on a light, picking up notes devoid of subtlety, and then being confused for 3 minutes trying to figure out wtf the game wants you to do. The enemy design is laughable at best and pitiful at worst without a single moment of tension existing at any point during the experience. Most of the "enemies" just stand there doing nothing, looking like a free unity model with a low quality shader on them... because they are a free unity character model with a low quality shader on them. And whoever allowed those "Stealth" sections to see the light of day should be tried for a federal offense. How the f*ck are you gonna have a stealth section where you A. Can't crouch B. Can't out run/out maneuver the monster C. Have a piss poor checkpoint system, and D. are stuck in a tiny ass room with it, searching random f*cking drawers for dumbass notes that are required to progress.

The storyline is immediately apparent from the first 20 seconds and the voice actor sounds like the devs woke him up at 4am, kicked him in the chest, handed him a mic and yelled "READ IT QUIETER DAMMIT!!" every time he tried to show emotion. Seriously, my 80 year old grandparents could show more emotional range. The game also spells out its story themes like you're the slowest chimpanzee who's still working through pre-k for the 20th year in a row.

It's a combination of copy and pasted ideas from better games and movies, without a single original idea in sight. Silent Hill, Observer, Layers of Fear, Amnesia, The Shining, Stranger Things, Repulsion (though I doubt the devs have even seen that movie with how embarrassing their "homage" was) nothing is safe from this game's shameless imitations. It also looks like pure sh*t, and these devs need a quick lesson in Unity's post processing because apparently it's too f*cking hard for these jugheads to figure out. You know the color grading is terrible when the fire somehow looks grey.

Even the music is annoying and they probably would have been better suited to just let ol' Kevin Macleod do the honors. Seriously, nothing escapes the mindnumbingly awful brush that these unimaginative paste eaters smear over every inch of the experience. How Wired Productions picked this up to publish is beyond me.

I guess it gets a 1 for at least being functional when I turn it on.
