The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 - Faith

If zombies and the apocalypse weren’t your thing despite all the praise heaped upon The Walking Dead, then I’d suggest giving The Wolf Among Us a shot. In both visuals and plot it’s a pretty far departure from Telltale’s previous effort, but manages to be just as engaging and interesting as anything found in The Walking Dead.

There's a lot in The Wolf Among Us for Fables fans to get excited about. And if you're new to the series, it's just as good an introduction as reading the first tradeback. I enjoyed 'Faith' so much that I did two run-throughs in one sitting, and I can't wait to see where my decisions lead in the next episode.

Like The Walking Dead before it, The Wolf Among Us is at once a faithful adaptation and a great original story in its own right. Fables fans will be delighted to see more of the characters they know and love, and newcomers will find this to be a great jumping-off point into an expansive and fascinating universe.

After playing The Wolf Among Us you can see that Telltale has a real grasp on creating amazing interpretations of comics. Even without having any knowledge or relation to the Fables comic I can't wait for the next four episodes.

As a first entry in a five episode series, The Wolf Among Us: Faith is an exciting game.

With just one episode to go off of I’m still prepared to bet that unless Telltale screw up massively I’m going to end up thinking The Wolf Among Us is better than Game Of The Year contender/winner The Walking Dead in a few months’ time.

With gripping choices and authentic characters, I care about what happens to this dark, tragic world.

Hats off to Telltale for not resting on their laurels with The Wolf Among Us, but stepping out and creating a new adventure series that is shaping up to be brilliantly bleak and gritty but joyously fun.

Clocking in at around two hours, this is the best looking, best playing and most polished game that Telltale has created to date and while it’s a bit lacking in the idea that each choice has great weight and meaning behind them, it’s still a fantastic title and a truly promising beginning for what might become Telltale’s greatest work yet.

In all, The Wolf Among Us has a superb introductory episode.

It achieves everything one could ask from a pilot and on the strength of its setup, Telltale have room to execute what’s looking to be yet another genre defining adventure.

It's a sharply written, sharply dressed blend of urban fantasy and detective noir, the kind that Disney would have been appalled to see but the Brothers Grimm would have shot thumbs up at.

While the gameplay is still second-rate compared to the story, Faith succeeds most because of its unpredictability. Even longtime Fables fans will be shocked by some of the revelations.

Telltale has once again delivered a well-written adventure, this time with an added dose of stylish noir presentation.

TellTale Games hits it again with interactive story gaming.

So for The Wolf Among Us, my evaluation is this: so far so good. The writing is solid, the characters and universe are intriguing, and the murder mystery looks like it can hold up for a 10-hour game (or however long the entire season lasts).

With its compelling storytelling, rich characterisations, and engaging player choices, The Wolf Among Us succeeds in spite of its gameplay short comings, and looks to be another genre-defining title from the team at Telltale Games.

An assured and stylish first entry in The Wolf Among Us series that retains many of the hallmarks of Telltale's previous games while also providing us with a game that is unique in tone and setting.

A very good start. This is no pretty fairy tale, but a gruesome thriller with a fantastic parallel world New York as a background, where you meet characters from Snow White to Grendel.

Telltale keeps its promise, and brings us a great story in a great universe. If you liked The Walking Dead, or are interested in The Wolf Among Us, go ahead and buy it.

The interesting characters and the thrilling story were worth the wait. Now let's hope the second episode can keep up this kind of quality.

A new benchmark for “branching narrative” games. The Wolf Among Us turns players into viewers by almost ditching gameplay, but you will enjoy watching this show.

Faith is a sterling beginning to what looks to be another feather in Telltale’s cap; a confident, slick opener to a mystery that begs to be explored. I wait with bated breath and sweaty palms for the next installment, where I’m sure to discover how my choices have only made things worse, at least if The Walking Dead is anything to go by.

The first episode of The Wolf Among Us is fantastic (it's a fairy tale), and also fantastic (it's wonderful). It's going to please not only the fans of The Walking Dead from the last year, but also those, who favors a quality writing as well as charismatic characters.

As a first episode, it succeeds at pulling players into a different thematic experience than The Walking Dead, and should make people excited for what is to come from the rest of the season.

The first episode is not too long, but makes up its length with a strong emphasis on the narrative.

Since this new adventure from Telltale seems to play in the same league of The Walking Dead, we can easily say that the credit due to them stands for the next episodes.

As only the first of five episodes, it is difficult to tell how the series will play out and evolve from here. However, The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 - Faith makes a fantastic first impression and has us eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Bigby's story.

If you know the "Fable" comic or not, you can only admire the work Telltale Games has done with The Wolf Among Us, in terms of genuine ambiance and graphic style. Very special, this universe mixing fairy tales and modern thriller works just fine in an adventure game. The tradeoff is easy enigmas and only some rare QTE will require a hint of thinking. But that's the burden of that kind of game and we know since The Walking Dead that it's possible to enjoy such a gameplay. All in all, the only unknown thing is the content of the next episodes of the series. Will we be overjoyed or disappointed? Anyway, we're eager to see the follow up.

Every frame is stunningly composed, the voice actors as fitting as they are talented. On PC, even the tech has come a long way since The Walking Dead, which helps to get totally wrapped-up in this extraordinary murder mystery. This close to the release of Beyond: Two Souls, there's also something to be said about characters that are believable and relatable, without having to bank on star power and performance capture.

For Telltale Games the first chapter of The Wolf Among Us is a new achievement from the narrative side.

If you're a fan of Telltale's prior work, or just enjoy a good story, you absolutely need to download and play Faith. It's a solid first episode that lays the groundwork for what will hopefully be the studio's finest series yet.

As a first episode, The Wolf Among Us successfully introduces a world we want to know more of. Tidbits of information about places and characters are enough to satisfy while also creating sufficient mystery that your mind will stretch into all sorts of possibilities. The way you play The Wolf Among Us doesn’t earn as much enthusiasm, but that perhaps proves games can enthrall even if what your hands are doing isn’t that interesting.

The Wolf Among Us is an overall a good start to Telltale's next episodic series...Whether you're into the lore or not though, one thing is for sure -- the few moments where I got to be more detective than brawler were an absolute joy and I sincerely hope this is given more of a spotlight in the rest of the season.

Danger fuelled TWD right from the start, but episode 1 of Wolf feels much more like a TV show pilot – setting up all the pieces it needs to tell a compelling neo-noir story. An initial lack of emotional connection left me feeling disappointed, but when given the time to shine, it does. Episode 2 can’t come soon enough.

Cityscapes are cloaked in deep purple haze and long shadows, and droning minor-scale chords heave and sigh, suffocating you with their smoky nuances. No matter how this story unfolds, it's hard to imagine a happy ending clearing away the pervading darkness.

While the developer’s previous game – The Walking Dead – bought me with difficult relations within the group, The Wolf Among Us captivated me with its mood, much darker than in the original comic books. It’s simply dripping with noir. [13/2013, p.73]

A nice start for this new IP but there are still too many technical problems, especially in animation.

The Wolf Among Us Episode One: The Faith opens a new season in an exciting world rich of possibilities, but lacks those moral choices that force characters to face their worst inner demons and that made of The Walking Dead such an intense and poignant series.
