The Witcher is a very strong, and in many ways, very different game from most RPGs on the market. It's take on fantasy adventuring offers emphasis on themes often overlooked by it's rivals in the genre; such as a focus on alchemy.

    Firstly the positives:
The game's lore is very well developed, and makes for an interesting setting, (obviously based on the books). The number and diversity of quests is extensive and can make for lots of game time.
There is a focus on player choices which is always, in my opinion, well received, and the overall feel of the game is one of polish and time investment. There is also a semi-sandbox feel to the game, with NPCs strolling around the lands and changing their positions with respect to the time of the day.
It should also be noted that the game's primary pathway, that of hunting monsters, is pleasingly explored. Being a monster hunter feels gratifying and feels like a respected and realistic profession within the game's universe, and there are other things to occupy your time when not monster hunting; such as dice poker which makes for a fun mini-game.

    The negatives:
The combat within the game, although perhaps appealing to some, is too simplistic and feels too unreaslistic for my personal taste. It has a floursihed arcade-style form of combat, similar to the kind of high pulsing combat you would find in a game like Super Smash Bros, or Soul Calibur. The NPCs and the world in which they inhabit (although perhaps a flimsy criticism I acknowledge) feel, to be honest, really weird to the point of being creepy. I often found it impossible to immerse myself in the game and it's lore because I found the characters portrayed to be amazingly un-charismatic, although this could be down to the below par voice acting.

The game is very unusual however in that it feels unlike any other RPG I have played and so is immune from comparison. I would encourage people to play this game to develop their own view on it, and not least because despite my few criticisms it is a very strong game to enjoy.

It is unique, does justice to the lore (you will understand if you have read the original fiction) and has some great game play systems. The graphics are sub par with LOTS of annoying clipping, animations are repetitive and lack impact, the questing structure is awful with LOTS OF FETCH QUESTS, limited ability to move about the map that divides open areas into tunnel segments, dialogue is poorly written, voice acting and line delivery variable from acceptable to down right cringe worthy, NPC models are poorly executed and repeat CONSTANTLY. The uniqueness of the game style and setting, use of great mechanics for crafting and skill building are what carry the game along with the general tone of the story and just the concept that make this worth playing ONCE and only once as long as you can stomach traversing the same map, OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. My advice is to watch a play through and if you want the story just watch it as The Witcher 2 is a far superior game.

TL;DNR: 6: Great ideas, adheres to lore and expresses it well, unique game play and RPG elements with acceptable combat. Poorly written dialogue, terrible animation and graphics, stiff and stilted line delivery that goes from acceptable to awful. Only purchase on sale and if you are an RPG hard core player as the fetch quests, poor level design and spending 2/3 of your time crossing a map many, many times makes this game hard to play for long.

Technology/engine: 4: Lots of loading screens, frequent bugs, generally sub par.

AI: 4: Brain dead enemies with the exception of some boss encounters.

Graphics: 4: dated, poorly and inconsistent application, lots of NPC repetition, lots of annoying clipping and generally poor cinematics (except for the opening which is brilliant and one of my favorites).

Sound: 5: Functional with issues of source to distance and inconsistent triggering.

Soundtrack: 5: Standard with little to say about it.

Voice acting: 6: Variable from acceptable to cringe worthy.

Crafting: 8: The alchemy system is great and very well executed.

Customization: 7: Decent play style customization within skill trees.

Gameplay systems: 9: The systems are really well developed with a unique timed combat system, signs (magic), alchemy, NPC interaction and development. This game is to be commended for this aspect and is one of the best in its development cycle but the other aspects pull it down and make it tiresome. The quest structure and level design are what really detract here.

Controls: 7: Serviceable to well done.

Story: 7: It is faithful to the lore and the substance of the story, under the poorly written dialogue and variable voice acting, is really great - its execution is really hit and miss.

Classic RPG feeling, really good story, important decisions, interesting characters, nicely improved point&click combat system, for the time surprisingly beautiful visuals, humour, fun mini games, extensive alchemy, but what stole my heart the most were 2 things - setting and music. Impressively portrayed environments, not the typical dragons and crazy colored high fantasy, but rather more realistic medieval and darker European setting, I just loved exploring these locations, villages, cities, farming summer fields, forests and swamps. And on top of that, what truly glorifies this title is absolutely stunning soundtrack that fits every location perfectly and creates unforgettable moods, captivating you in its atmospheric embrace.

All the problems I heard about The Witcher such as the long loading times, bugs and crashes seemed to be all fixed in this enhanced edition as I never came across any problems and could enjoy this delightful RPG experience 100%.

Extremely pleasant surprise and one of the best titles in the genre. Now I'm just worried whether the next TW chapters will be even able to live up to this gem. 10/10

This game has a really good story and many hours of gameplay. Choices make outcomes, decisions are valued.

I did not like that it took about three chapters to get the hang of the battle system, and even when I did it was not that great. The storyline, however, is superb.

I am not a fan of the combat system but the world is very immersive and the story is above average for a modern fantasy game. Graphics are very good for their time as well. Overall I feel if you are willing to deal with sub-par repetitive combat then you will have a fun time with the story and world building.

My friends recommended me this game. I was struggling a lot in the beginning as well as everyone who played The Witcher. I hated this game and at times came very close to uninstalling it. But I always thought "they said its good, there must be more to it" and kept playing. Indeed, after 3-5 hours into the game I understood. Behind a complicated story, totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ talents and combat mechanics there lies one of the best RPG games I've ever played. After you grip the overall gameplay it will stop to irritate you and patterns will start to display. You will be able to enjoy the rich and immersive story, full of intrigues and twists and also those weird combats. The story is the strongest part of the game, it is very mature where decisions are hard with serious consequences and are never good or evil. They just define your political and personal preferences as you progress from an outcast monster killer. The game is also very long. I like to fulfill every quest, check all chests and barrels and enjoy games in general. With such approach, The Witcher took me 65 hours to finish. Every second was definitely worth it. Do yourself a favor, buy the game and play it. Don't get demotivated by prologue and the first act, keep playing and eventually you will get consumed, I guarantee you that. Last time this happened to me was when I played Fallout 2 few years ago, this game quite reminded me of it and I thank its creators for that.

The time delay between clicking and action utterly breaks any way of knowing if you're fighting properly or not.
    2) You can't hop over waist high fences. I need to say no more on this. It's utterly stupid.
Then in terms of story, character and acting. Oh my word. It's embarrassing.
I saw reviews complimenting the GFX. They are appalling! I can't believe they were looking at the same game.
I think I only paid a few quid for this and feel cheated. Avoid at all costs.

The main selling point of The Witcher is its great story. This game is for adults and it's made in a way that makes the story very believable. People swear, steal, **** and murder. The plot in this game is a lot darker than in most other games and it really adds to the atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the fighting mechanics and menus/inventory are a mess and it hurts the gameplay quite a bit.

Its as dark and mature as a game can come. But its not an open world. Its a kind of sandbox game, though the box is big enough you hardly notice it. Its a game driven by people and motivations. Really this game is like an engrossing novel. Without spoiling anything. This game is sporting the best twist in a game or show I've ever seen.
Its a game that doesn't condescend. It is made for adults. (Unlike so many RPGs these days). The characters are characters. No one feel one dimensional. And the characters drive the plot.

I liked how when given dialogue options the character took your suggestion and said something along those lines but different. It added an element of unpredictability to dialogue.
The whole thing with toxicity. Potions have a toxicity value. If you drink your way over 100 you die. As you get close to that point you see red flecks floating across the screen. The whole world changes when you drink Cat. All these things added a flavor to the game. Its like the first 2 Max Payne games. It has a style all its own. Its a game you play because your following the story and want to see what happens next.

And CD Projekt RED may just be the last bastion of sanity in the DRM craze that is sweeping games these days.

The game is still enjoyable in 2014, but suffers mostly (IMO) from terrible load times between every location. The over minuses are already mentioned poor combat implementation. The quite complex system the every hit should count suffers from uncontrollable character: so I clicked or not? why he is not attacking? oh, now it shows "too fast"!. You adapt, but it's not enjoyable at all.

It has great music and great environmental effects. The combat system is not bad, the fights are dynamic. I like that there aren't millions of quests like Elder Scroll saga. I suppose it has great graphics for the year it was released.

This is a story I have read, watched or played like thousand times, I know that most of people think that is great, but I found a bit boring, maybe after playing The Walking Dead or reading Game of Thrones everything is different... xD

Many people say that this a mature story... I think that it is dark and there is sex in the game xD... but that doesn't mean that is mature. I agree that is cool that the decisions that you make affect the storyline... but this is not new... you can see it in most of rpgs, maybe in this game the choices are more 'mature' or more ethically complex than in other games like Dragon Age o Baldur's Gate, but as I said before... veeery far from Telltale Games choices gaming (maybe is unfair to compare with Telltale Games I know...).

The types of quests are quite repetitive. The cuts between scenes are awful. There are many bugs, and the controls are a bit unresponsive sometimes.

I think this game is quite overrated. I had probably enjoyed it more if people hadn't told me that was a great game. I give it a 7 minus 1 to counterbalance its reputation.

Geralt is my favorite character ever in a video game, closely followed by Ezio Auditore. Other characters very also very memorable.
The game offers you a decent size world to explore, but filled with quests, interesting characters and mini-games like epic brawls in pubs. It never feels empty. The monsters are unique to the series, you won't meet any stereotype zombies and vampires. The combat system lacks somewhat, as it's very easy even on hard difficulty. It's backed up by excellent alchemy system, each potion really matters and have unique and powerful effects. Creating them is surprisingly satisfying, and since you can have only a few active due to them being toxic you need to choose carefully. There are also firecrackers and oils, so the crafting system is pretty robust. Your character gains talents that are basically skill points, skill trees are HUGE but not overwhelming and each skill does something different and interesting.
As a bonus the game comes with a level editor so you can play player-created maps and quests after finishing the main story line.
So does the Witcher have any flaws?
Well the voice acting of main characters is superb, but minor characters very often have same voices, which is somewhat annoying. Also like I mentioned above combat is very easy once you grasp the basics.
The world could have been bigger, it often feels like you don't have much space to breathe although it's never empty !

Worse than the second part in the series, but still a great game on it's own it earns a 9/10

Sound: Amazing calming themes, and great voice acting. 10.
Gameplay: The gameplay is unique because it’s different from any game that I have played before. For starters the combat system is what makes this game unique. You have three different stances and different weapons which each are for particular type of enemies. Say your fighting a short dwarf, a stance changed to the hip would allow you to kill that particular enemy quicker, and if there’s a taller or bigger enemy that is attacking then a stance change where the witcher holds the sword above his head would be required. Now it’s not free combat where you just freely swing your weapon around. Instead you click on an enemy and the witcher begins to attack, then the arrow lights up and you must time your clicks with the mouse to keep the flow of combat going. Though this is something new, at times it feels overused and begins to get boring. Althought its always satisfying to switch to the lowest stance and hit enemies that surround you. The game is also a open world game similar to the elder scrolls games, but instead broken into chapter with each new chapter taking you to a newer area, or expanding on a previous one. The game is also similar to mass effect with conversation, and even allows you to make several choices which make an impact on the story. You can also develop relationships with characters such as romance, and earn sex cards for doing so. The leveling system is simple and there are plenty of skills to go through, although some may find it complex at first. The game allows for professions such as alchemy. 9.
Story: I got lost trying to keep up with the story, because in the beginning its boring, but as you progress through the game, and near the end, it is satisfying. The game ends with a cliff hanger. 9.
Lasting Appeal: Took me about 18 hours to complete the game, it’s definitely worth the 5 or 10 bucks I bought it from a steam sale (can’t remember exact price). 10.
Overall Score: 9.2 out of 10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm trying to like this game, I really am, but it's proving to be very difficult. I realize I am playing on hard, but this is just ridiculously... not fun. At the particular part I'm at, it autosaved before a long speech that I have to skip through each time I die, or when the person with me dies (because I saved them, this person dying would obviate the whole point to everything). Right after the long speech is a boss battle. At first I was thinking "Yay, time to put interesting mechanics into a fight instead of the regular click-at-intervals-until-something-dies", but instead, it's the same thing but now you have another person to worry about. On top of all of this, it's pretty vague where or how to do things, and not in the good, find-it-yourself way. It's more of a "walk around the entire map hoping you find where that guy wants you to be." The friend who gifted me this game said it was the best RPG he's ever played... I'm trying to believe him, but I honestly can't find anything good with it. I mean, if you like it, more power to you, but I feel more obliged to play through it just to get to the second one...
Gosh, this review looks unfocused and sloppy... but then, so does this game... Hopefully the second one will be better.

An interesting (if rather linear) story spoiled by the worst combat system I have ever used. On my first play I died about 14 times on the Act I boss because I hadn't min/maxed my talents I finally beat him through sheer RNG by one-shotting him. Restarted the game at that point to repick the recommended talents and got bored 2 hours later.

You left-click on an enemy to start swinging your sword. After a few seconds the cursor changes and you left-click again to keep the attack going. Rinse/repeat until you have left-clicked the enemy to death. It feels like a step back from the combat system of the original Diablo....

Incomprensible que tanta gente tenga en tan alta estima a este juego. La historia es "original", en el sentido de que parece que el que la ha escrito no sabe ordenar muy bien sus ideas. I am playing this in 2013, for the first time. The Witcher is a long, immersive, detailed RPG. The story's flow is similar to likes of Baldur's Gate. Slightly different to your classic Warrior-Mage-Priest-Protagonist RPG types when it comes to character development, in that you are primarily a sword-user who can mix in various forms of magic during combat, as well as crafted/purchased potions. Combat itself can be a little difficult at times, but you get used to the click-to-combo fight style after a few hours (I found playing a warrior in Dragon Age to be harder). It covers mature themes and is probably not for children. If you had not played this when it came out many years ago this can fill the void. It's as enjoyable as Baldur's Gate and Dragon Age and while it's closer to those games than Skyrim, it tries to offer a similar level of lore and fantasy. A tremendous effort by the developers, and one for the history books. Expand

The Witcher is one of those rare games that are created for real RPG fans by a Great developer that knows how to please their costumers without milking them in the processes, like Bioware, Blizzard, just to name two.
I wont say it's a perfect game or that I would recommend it to everyone.
Why? Because this game can only be truly appreciated by a real hardcore RPG fan, which I'm not. To

    Why?
Because this game can only be truly appreciated by a real hardcore RPG fan, which I'm not.
To be honest I'm more of a linear RPG/ action adventure game fan like Bioware used to make.

So what did a liked in this Game:

The story which as some really unforgettable moments
    The amazing soundtrack
The art work, which is beautiful and detailed.
The game world that felt alive and vibrant, with day and night cycles, dynamic weather, NPCs doing their daily work during the day and returning home at dusk.
The strategic element through the use of potions and magic.
The choices you make have significant consequences to the way the story unfolds and to the ones around you.

    What I didn't Like

The pacing of the story which begins at a very dull tone and slooooooooowly starts to gain momentum.
    The difficulty spikes
The boring combat mechanics that made me quit this game more than twice.
    The excruciating booooooooooooooooring fetch quests
    The dull sound effects
The hit or miss voice acting
The immature and borderline distasteful approach to sex in this game.
The anticlimactic and boring boss fight with Azar Javed.
The fact that everything in this game is too expensive which forced me to side track from the story to look for loot, that in 70% of the times is food and booze.
The lack of customization, armors, interesting weapons (the steel sword you start with is actually better than 90% of the weapons in this game).
The fact that after a cut scenes, that precedes a fight, I would immediately be surrounded by enemy's and attacked before I could respond.
    The lack of interesting puzzles

    In conclusion
Considering this is the first game from CD Projectk Red, and the low budget they had, i'm very impressed with the final product despite it's multiple faults.

I rate this game a 7 out of 10. But be warned this game is not for every one.

The main adventure still has serious pacing problems, combat's still too easy for the most part, and load times -- though reduced -- continue to get in the way of the action.
  2. The new and improved package is increasingly attractive. There are still some rough edges, and moments of genuine drama are still undercut by how they're performed, but this is an agreeably driven RPG in an agreeably ornate package.

Finally, The Witcher fulfills its potential, and, best of all, it's available as a free update, just in case you bought it anyway. [Nov 2008, p.110]
