Also, the beginning is a bit too hard and might put off some players, while they shouldn't stop at the prologue, because this is a fantastic game despite it's flaws.

The combat ranges from decent to mediocre with nice looking animations and a strong variety of enemies. However the animations can be too extravagant making the "quick attack" not as quick thanks to the stylish sword spinning, so instead of planting attacks immediately on an enemy, you're waiting for the animation to finish. The lack of strafe and back peddling hurt the combat too, making movement feel sloppy.

Enemy AI is bad, their attacks barely differ from run at you and swing, and if you stray just a little too far from your opponents they will give up. I tested this on all difficulties and found no difference.

The difficulty is another issue, I have no issue with brutal difficulty but the load times which occur at game over make it unbearable to die. For this reason I found myself on easy half the time to avoid these load screens altogether. It doesn't help that there's no achievements for higher difficulties either, so if you merely want that challenging aspect of weak vitality then go for it, but I recommend steering clear.

The story is pretty good, the characters are interesting and the general arch is intriguing. More often than not you will find yourself confused at what is happening in the mish-mash of politics, luckily the journal is fantastic. The journal simplifies every aspect of the story to a couple of paragraphs, making it easier to get the lore down-pat. What's also great is how the story will drastically change depending on what decisions you make, upping the replay-ability.

The graphics are the strongest aspect of the game. Frame-rate rarely drops on the 360 version and the environments are entirely hand crafted with detailed textures. That may sound like a very general description, but in action the game is absolutely beautiful. The soundtrack isn't very memorable and the loop is short for most tracks, so you may find yourself getting tired of the repetition.

Despite the issues, I had a great time with the game. If you're a fan of fantasy then you must look into The Witcher 2.

Though I am still just halfway through the game, the need to rate this game was great. This is A great rpg one that I have been wanting since forever. The last rpg's that made me lock myself up were kotor and a few others. The witcher 2 is the first since those enjoyable titles who tempt me to neglect the real world haha. Nice to see singleplayer rpg's still hold up in this mmorpg day and age.

The story of Geralt, a master monster slayer, is one rife with politics, adult themes, and intrigue. Right at the start the writing is stellar and written very well. No single character is an archetype, and everyone has a motive that may or may not help you. The element of choice surpasses even today's standards as a decision literally at the beginning of the game could literally send you down one of two vastly different paths throughout the rest of this 40+ hour adventure. This is also no game for children as topics of rape, murder, assassination, and torture are only some of the more mild ones, it makes other similarly rated mature games look like Disney films. Accompanying this game is a dynamic combat system that can swing both ways depending how far you get into the game. If you quit the game rather early, you would've had the impression that this game was frustrating and unforgiving. But the true fun lies with preparing for your battles through potions and reading up on enemy tactics. While not stellar and ultra responsive, the combat of using two swords and a dark souls-esque is welcome over the more vanilla combat system of the first Witcher game. With all I've said you would imagine The Witcher 2 to be a near flawless game but some real flaws hold the game back from achieving real greatness. For one the game is absolutely stunning as in it still makes the PCs of today work to run it even on high. Even then the game overkills with bloom effectively conveying a very fantasy tone but to me it looks rather odd. But among the most frustrating is the inventory and a lack of tutorial. The inventory at best is cumbersome and unintuitive. You'll eventually get used to it, but for the first few hours it can be a nightmare to handle. And the potion system for the most part is an integral part but without knowing what enemies you might face next, it becomes impossible to determine which potion you need for the next fight since you can only take them out of combat through meditation.
combine this with the lack of a fast travel system and you have a recipe for a bevy of problems that only irritate players. But for the most part, The Witcher 2 is an adult game that respects player choice and is a strong rpg in its own right and of 2011.

This is a wonderful game and can be found on Steam for 16 bucks. Pretty high PC standards for top quality graphics. The mature content is refreshing since this is a classic RPG. the only negative is unfamiliar with the world history or characters if you have not played original Witcher. The learning curve is pretty steep and it is a difficult game which not a bad thing. Later.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has an intriguing story and universe, a big strength for any game with in it. There are multiple side quests in the game as well so there are multiple hours of time that can be put into the game as for replay value or a single run. There are multiple branching paths that change how your story and in some ways gameplay goes. The characters are as very entertaining in their own way. The universe is grim dark in many aspects with their being no one good side to say the least or one evil side. the story itself is relatively well written as well, one of the better pieces of writing in video games to come out in the modern times. As a down side though the gameplay is a complex RPG, yes, however, since many games nowadays are too easy to complete this might be one of the games advantages as well. To also admit yes the gameplay at times does at times get boring so I have to play different games but gameplay is not one of the things I care for majorly yet I see it's importance. Overall a 8.5 a great game and a near must buy for anyone. Expand

Definitely not for everyone. The fighting is somewhat counter-intuitive and took a good hour to get the hang of, but now that I understand the mechanics of the fighting, I like it more than the usual left-click-fest dungeon crawlers out there. You actually need timing in this game. Spells actually make a difference but aren't so over-powered you can just sit back and play menus.

There are several context-sensitive menu options, such as meditating, which only appear when you're near a fire or talking to someone who can offer you shelter. Once you know this, it's fine, but the first time I was told to meditate I was pretty confused since I couldn't find a meditation option anywhere.

Once you get passed the initial learning curve, Witcher 2 is quite a lot of fun to play.

The Good: The Characters are amazing. Whether it be a companion of yours or an enemy, each character makes you feel strongly towards them and it adds a lot of immersion. They will make you feel a connection to them and some parts of the game will make you emotional because of them. The story is the best part imo. It's very detailed and thorough, and keeps you playing for hours on end. The atmosphere and the graphics are incredible. I was in awe when I first stepped foot into the world and saw the detail that was put into the enviroment. At some points it had me stop and stare at my surroundings. The voice acting for the most part is very good, and the music is epic to say the least. I really liked the crafting and alchemy system, along with the inventory. There is tons of items to craft and potions a' many to make. The arena mode is something I enjoyed for a few hours, and was fun enough to be put in "The Good".

The Bad: I have to say it, the combat is boring. Play on anything above easy and it turns into a roll spree with heavy attacks in between. It just isn't fun. The addition of 5 unique powers spices it up at first but quickly becomes stale as well. The game is quite difficult at some parts, but at others instead of being difficult, it felt more unfair and tedious, causing you to resort to cheap and boring tactics to progress. It felt clunky at times and that gets annoying. The combat is really what brought the game down from a 10 to an 8 for me, as I really didn't enjoy it. If you're looking for a good combat experience, look elsewhere. Asides from that, the last 30 or so minutes of the game could have been a lot better. The final fights felt less significant then they should have and I think they could have been done better.

Things that could improve: Please CD Projekt, I beg you, make Witcher 3 OPEN WORLD. Although there are tidbits of open area to explore, it didn't feel genuine and still felt very linear. I know the game isnt't supposed to be open but I really hope they add more exploration in the next game.

After playing 30 hours of Witcher 2, I will most likely come back and play another play-through at some point. This game is more than worth your money. If you come into it expecting a game like The Elder Scrolls, you will be dissapointed. If you come into it knowing it's a linear RPG, you will be greatly satisfied.

I would've liked to have seen more moves available, but that's simply not the style they were aiming for. The music is also quite well done.

My only real qualm with this game is the graphics. The graphics seen in the trailers are truly immaculate, but you're required to have a phenomenal gaming computer to utilize the settings to provide those graphics. The minimum requirements will provide you 'low settings', while the recommended requirements will provide you 'medium settings', which are pretty terrible, and you'll still find lag and choppiness in movement. Every other game I play I'm able to utilize my 27" monitor's 2560 ×1440 resolution basically on high/very high. On this game, I can only run 1600x900 and it's still incessantly choppy.

As I said, other than that, great game.

Immersive. The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings is one of those games that you'd really feel getting into. The protagonist and other characters are great, the voice acting is fantastic -- it's action-packed and offers a great story experience. But too much of one thing sometimes kills; as the game is clustered with excessive exploration, dialogues, and puzzles - it ruins the flow of the game.

Things weren't as bad as they looked, though. The depiction of the world in turmoil, the many well-crafted characters and the storyline featuring a political power struggle really carried the game from start to finish. The choices and consequences, despite being only limited to the narrative and not the gameplay, were decent and did not shy away from leaving out a significant amount of content based on your decisions. The (perfectly warranted) negative things about the combat aside, it did not get in the way and ultimately managed to get challenging enough and even slightly tactical at times.

The Witcher 2, while not without flaws, is overall a well-crafted and written game that - whenever it doesn't bog you down too much with its combat - always leaves you curious to see what outcomes your decisions may lead to.

But i hate a part of this game. Press a button to open doors? to climb ladder? or to climb anywhere or jump from anywhere? Maybe a little detail, but annoying.

Witcher 2 is much better looking than its predecessor, the story is very complex and can go in many different paths, and the characters are great, but because of that the game was made pretty short. If you play two or three times to see more endings it's a full length game.

Playing through the trilogy atm. After (barely) enduring the first game I can just say that this is where they got their **** together, totally holds up in 2020. Good graphics and very good storytelling.

A few complaints though: - The difficulty curve. The first part of the game is very hard as your max health is extremely low. All hits taken from random peasants takes like 50%+ hp.

    - The difficulty curve. The first part of the game is very hard as your max health is extremely low. All hits taken from random peasants takes like 50%+ hp. Did almost never die in the later parts.
    - Random crashes or bugs, npc's blocked me or passages at times, making me have to reload a previous save.
    - The save files is too big / inefficient, so my steam cloud storage got full for this game, so the game kept crashing before I manually deleted the saves and turned off cloud sync.

Apart from these things, I think this game is worth your time. Specially if you're interested in the Witcher story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The witcher 2 is a massive improvement on the first witcher game in every aspect and after playing this game i have huge respect for cd projeckt red because they learned from their shortcomeings and listened to their fans. but dose the witcher 2 stand the test of time ? now 9 years old.

Story: continuing from the first game somewhat unfortunately . what dose a witcher do when he is done tracking down a gang that attacked his family and the finishes off a secret order trying to kill him ? well he fights a war and engages in politics. but wait now you are top suspect in the assassination of your kings :O but wait the assassin is a witcher like you and knows who you are :O but wait this was a plot by the mages :O with an even bigger plot attached to that :O geralt's life is a mess, because of his skills and occupation he is often sucked into conflicts bigger than he is. often times he will try to remain neutral but in certain cases that's never an option.
    Story: 9.5/10

World building: the witcher's world is dense and packed with lots of lore , every character has their place in the world and every character has logic that makes them move through it. the witcher 2 dose a better job at portraying this than the first one, i know what the mages role in the world is now and kings all of these now feel more like occupations than these things of great power. all haveing internal power struggles. the writing just gets deeper and deeper in its lore
    World building:9.5/10

Graphics: now this game looks a little out of date but considering how how clunky and awkward the first game looked this one is great , the models and animation was extremely awkward though story scenes , animations in combat are better but still a tad clunky. characters are really well designed , greatly improved from the first game. the game looks almost comic booky in its style melded with a very fantasy novel cover aesthetic and that is easy to get behind
    Graphics:7.5/10

Gameplay: this game is hard but i liked how hard it was because when you do things right you feel like a ninja witch is what i think the story needed, the combat feels more like an extension of geralt as he does have these ninja like skills , its telling the story through the game play witch is always a win and that is just a byproduct of a good combat system. just good it can definitely be improved as save points were infuriating at times and the combat did feel unfair sometimes but the difficulty made you feel all the more awesome when you did pull off the win. essentially this game is a dark souls with a more cohesive story
    Gameplay: 8.2/10

Sound design: this is probably the most disappointing part of the witcher 2 , everything else is a vast improvement and i'd be remiss if i didn't say that the sound design wasnt improved because it certainly was but some of the voice acting was awkward at best , doug cockle as geralt improved immeasurably though . the music is good it's definitely found its style gospelic battle music and fun tavern music. the sound effects how ever got old fast for me , iv heard oh ohhhhh geralts death grunts a million times and that drove me to the point of quitting ( for the night) a few times
    Sound design: 6.2/10

The witcher 2 is a great game and improves a great deal upon the first game especially in combat you can feel the devs finding what works for this type of game by looking at their competition and learning from them, witcher 1 feels like an out dated bioware game , witcher 2 feels like a dark souls with a better story and the witcher 3 well you will have to wait till i write a review for that one

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was not the biggest hit back in 2011. While it garnered sales and praise at its release, it hasn't been consistently mentioned like other games from that year (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3), which is unfortunate, because the game is really good. While it garnered sales and praise at its release, it hasn't been consistently mentioned like other games from that year (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3), which is unfortunate, because the game is really good. This game is impressive even still to this day, with some caveats, obviously. But something the game succeeds immensely with is the immersion into the world. It feels lived in and like it could exist in a real place (ignoring the magical factors). The huge trees surrounding Flotsam, the warm beaches and mountains of Aedirn, and the ravished ruins of Loc Muinne creates an inviting motion to the surroundings. The music also helps invest the player in the world, which is bombastic during battle, and hauntingly somber during conversations and slower moments. Even though the character presentation is at best decent, the environments are truly epic, which also translates to the story. The intriguing narrative is focused and ambitious, yet clever and self aware. Playing as Geralt of Rivia hunting down the assassin of King Foltest, Letho, is riveting from start to finish. The story is so good much thanks to the characters. Geralt of Rivia is an all out bad ass, while Vernon Roche is a cunning operator. Dandelion brings in comedic effect with his funny remarks and King Henselt brings in darkness with his tragic family drama. Even the side-quests have some level of depth, not always being as straight forward as you might initially think. The game is based around you the choices make, which unlike most games actually have huge impacts on the narrative. You might never see certain characters or view people differently depending on the actions of Geralt, and it helps make your actions have more weight to them. Even though the ending might occur in the same place, the journey there and the character's positions might differ hugely. The writing is immaculate and impressive, captivating the player and not making the narrative too hard to follow. The only confusing part might be character's names if you haven't played the first game, but if you read the extensive journal, you'll be quickly caught up, and stuck in the game's politics. The only big issue I have with the story is the final boss, which fizzels out disappointingly, however you choose to play. It neither feels rewarding, nor impressive, but that's solely because of the build-up to that moment (during the epilogue). But that's a small nit pick, because afterwards it feels satisfying, and worth the time to get there, it's more about the build-up to the fight. When it comes to gameplay, it's a bit of a mixed bag. All the content is existent, from responsive combat, to dialogue choices, to preparation before battles (from potions and oils), it ties in with the character of the Witcher really well. The problem arises when it comes to execution. Character's might bug to actions, your character get's stuck in the environment sometimes, and brewing portions and oils is confusing at times, much cause from the questionable user interface. Even though the game world isn't massive, it could've helped with fast travel when traversing back to main areas, or level design could've been improved to make it go faster. I don't hate the gameplay, I quite like it actually, it's just rough around the edges and there's room for improvement. The game truly shines in it's writing and world-building, which raises it above some of it's rivals in the genre. The game just sucks you in, and keeps you engaged all the time. While the game lacks in polished gameplay, it makes up for in interesting character's and the interactions between them. It might not be Skyrim, but it's still damn good and worth your time. Expand

It has to be good as it's a Witcher game, sharp dialogue, well-written plot with deeper thoughts about right and wrong than average games. However I had more trouble than the other 2 games probably due to capacity of my macbook. The controls seem a bit troublesome to me and the melee system didn't work well either.

Expand

Default camera FoV (Field of view) creates motion sickness. Camera FoV can’t be adjusted. There’s no key-binding in the settings menu. When we change perspective to fight with different characters, instinctively I want to dodge roll but I can’t. As a result, I got confused whenever that happened. I've been through this game for a long time. The developer is the Polish company CD Projekt RED based on the series of novels "The Witcher". On PC, this game was released on May 16, 2011. We are all gamers, we perfectly remember part 1, which blew everyone's head off, with its coolness and quality. And I'll tell you right away, I won't torment you, the second part turned out to be worthy, no worse than the first. We start the game, also for our handsome, witcher Geralt from Rivia.

According to the plot, everything is pretty cool and interesting, in the middle of the game it can change, depending on which step, action, development you choose yourself. Initially, Gerald will be framed by a mysterious killer who had "witchy" eyes. He will kill King Foltest, and Geralt must regain his honest name, unravel the confusion, and find out why he was framed, and why the real killer needed it.

A series of strikes have been finalized, combos have become much more beautiful. In general, the whole game has changed and has become significantly better. Well, as for the textures of the game, some objects in the distance are also poorly visible, and the developers did not waste time and megapixels on them. Although this does not affect the beautiful picture as a whole. There is a lot more of any abomination in the second part, which allows you to pump Geralt much faster. We can also choose how to upgrade our character, and I paid special attention to magic spells, I really like them.

Based on everything written, this game deserves these points. Rarely when the second, third parts are better, but here we see a real rise, despite the fact that the first part was super. I advise everyone to play and get into this game, but I advise you to play both parts in order to know who you are playing for. And I almost forgot, not in the cut-out game, in the original, there are scenes of a bedding nature, and I would not advise people under the age of 18 to play. The Herald character really fell in love with gamers, and if you haven't played this game, know that you missed something, and it's something very cool and worthy of the time spent on it.

Game is impressive, you can see the step up from witcher 1. I was stunned as a kid of the world cdp created. This whole series needs a remaster to be put in one new edition. Let new generations enjoy witcher as it should be.

Gameplay is boring. Combat system is among the worst ever. Roll and roll with the occasional Quen sign and some mouse clicks. Boring.

The maps are really small, and the gameplay is really just busywork in between the story segments.

Alchemy is useless, magic aside Quen is not really useful.

There enemy AI is braindead, and playing in higher difficulties just makes the enemies HP sponges and the bosses like the Kraken, a cancer.

I am sorry, but this is a video game, not an interactive novel, and as a game it is just not very good.

The story is still stellar, and the graphics are awesome. And you will enjoy Witcher 3 much more if you complete this as well.

2 options exist, either watch a "movie version" of the story on Youtube, or play in this on the easiest difficulty setting, just for the story. The game, as a video game, is overrated. I typically use "extreme" ratings for overrated or underrated games, but since this is the Witcher series, one of my favourites, i am biased, so i will give it the rating it deserves, 7/10. Don't let that score fool you though, you definitely need to watch or play this once, in any case, despite its flaws.

Dont get me wrong, i think this game is quite good at the end, i personally trust in CDP as developer, they did a great job patching and improving the witcher 1, proving they aim to be a solid company for their customers. Im not talking about bugs here because actually even with 1.1 patch the game is full of them, but we know everything possible will be fixed later on. CDP did a huge step forward with this release with the introduction of a new and great engine, but there are many opinable if not poor decisions about developing different aspects of the game. There is a very poor design of all the menus (inventory, crafting system, trading etc) and a gameplay too much script based, really limiting the freedom, in many occasions the game plays like an interactive movie as don bluth dragon's lair, not sure how some ppl can see an rpg masterpiece in this mess. The new engine is one of the best if not the best around, the game even at mid video setting looks impressive. The music and the audio effects are excellent, anyway most of the npcs are repeating to death the same statement every 5 seconds when you stand near them, which is really really annoying. The combat system is different from wt1, now its full real time and its developed to be played with a joypad more then keyboard+mouse, anyway it works fine and its fun and interesting as idea. There are ranged weapons like throwing knives (actually op) and bombs, many different traps to place on floor, the possibility to parry (and counterattack if you have the proper talent), the signs to add more depth. Overall the combat system is fun and nice, it relays a lot on the user skill and i think the result is quite good. Anyway after some time you will see some issues in this system cause the best tactic at the end is always rolling on the floor like a madman and strike when you can, in many occasions it seems just an hack'n'slash, but i return to tell, the combat system has his ups and downs, but overall its good. On a side note the use of the potions is different from wt1, you need to drink the potions out of combat, so you should prepare yourself before a fight, too bad this system obviously works only if you know in advance if you are going to be involved in a fight, wich is possible only with a die-and-reload-gameplay. Bad choice tbh, as potions should be part of the withcer combat arsenal and in this game you will end to use potions only after you died in a fight to repeat it with a little help, also the pots lasts too little and you will end to use them marginally. The story may be appealing itself but if you played tw1 and you know what happened before it make no sense at all in many circumstances, the problem is how the story is implemented in the game, and especially the fact Gerald seems always without the knowledge of any important event, person, situation, that should be part of his background. I will not go specific here to avoid spoilers but just the fact that Gerald starts as level 1 character having issues to beat even the most crap solider, without the knowledge of any monster is totally in contrast with any possible prelude to this plot. The gameplay is action based, heavily cinematic and deeply scripted, with a very limited freedom in interaction and exploration, and short dialogues with very limited choices. The looting system is not really user friendly, its hard to position Gerald to pick up items, also the window is very tiny and you cant scale it. The inventory system and the menu in general are the weak part of this game, you cant sort junk from all the rest, so you need to pass the whole inventory list looking every line one by one to check what is junk and what not, what to buy or sell. there is not the possibility to sort the schematics resulting in a huge list of potions, upgrades, crafting sheets etc with no possibility even to sort them alphabetically. There is not any customization and even if the game was a console port i think its possible to do something better then this. Trading and alchemy suffers the same issue. What you can carry is based on weights, the game is full of different ingredients, patterns, items in general and you will see soon that what you can carry is quite limited, so at a point you will end to continue go back and forth to sell items or just you will leave most of the loot on the floor. Mini games should be cut out. I think this game is a great title under some aspects, but its really lacking in others. Tbh even if this was announced as an rpg made for pc, the feeling is to play a console oriented game. This game plays more similar to console action games then any rpg, its oki CDP wanted to implement something more modern into a genre maybe a bit redundant, but the result seems looking more to the console market then the expectations of the rpg players.

Decent game. Played through it on hard and the difficulty was to my liking for the most part. However, there really isn't a whole lot of combat in this game, which is good because as everyone knows it's as finicky as a transsexual choosing which pisser to use.

Story is confusing but whatever. It works for the most part. Pretty as a princess. More like mass effect than oblivion.

However, even with everything set to their lowest settings and almost every nicety disabled, I can barely get a steady framerate above 30.....I'm not alone and plenty of ATI and some Nvidia users are experiencing the same...So, that is an initial disappointment, on to the game itself.....The first Witcher (enhanced version) was a great game, very much open world and you could explore a lot whilst working on the quests....W2 claims to offer the same but doesn't deliver as almost everything is linear, with the sidequests tagged on which themselves don't allow you to go exploring.....In fact, the only real exploring you can do is within the towns and villages you visit during your way to main objectives.....The loot drops are extremely clumsy to pick up and you find yourself running back and forth and constantly trying to get the camera into a position so that you can highlight the drops and pick them up.....The inventory screen is a nightmare to work and even with the physical premium edition I have with it's manual and game guide won't help you figure out how to properly control the game screens.....As for combat, this is a bit of a step backwards from the first game with no real combo's to talk of, just normal hit and hard hit with a kind of "special move" kill should you manage to stun an opponent to make it trigger......There are certain events like barfights and some interactive cutscenes that involve you needing to press a series of keys or buttons (for controllers) which threw me back to the days of good old Shenmue, but even these are lacklustre in design, and are far too easy to beat on the normal difficulty setting. The only pleasure in combat is that the difficulty is really quite tough and some fights will require you to redo them a couple of times, which is almost unheard of in most of todays easy-mode RPGs......In summary, for me there are too many cutscenes, too much talking and not enough action. Maybe a few patches down the line Witcher 2 can achieve a standard which the developers reached with the re-worked first edition. But it sure needs new GFX card drivers and/or work to optimize it for gamers who have components up to a couple of years old. The game looks ok, but it's still using DX9, and in today's age, it really shouldn't be difficult to get a good framrate (I consider 60fps a benchmark) for people like myself with a 3.0ghz Quad core CPU, 4gb RAM, 64bit W7 and a 5770ATI card. ----- Needs Work - - 6/10, would give 8/10 if it ran nicely. Good story and characters. The major characters are very believable, and have very defined personalities.
Some parts of the combat system were great, most notably the difficulty at higher settings. You can't just expect to walk into a fight and mow down everything with your massive stats.

Cons: The game is on rails from the beginning. You can alter the storyline by your choices, but there's really no exploration to speak of.
The menu system is very aggravating, and you will spend much more time sorting through things than you should ever have to.
Other parts of the combat system are less than amazing. You'll need to remember the function of practically every key on the board. Forgot what one of them does? Tough. Go read the manual. Oh you can change the key mapping.....outside the game.....only to forget it later...... This wouldn't be as big a problem if there weren't so many keys you need to remember. There wasn't a single moment playing this game that I didn't yearn for the Over-The-Shoulder (OTS) system from the first game. Three separate keys for journal, character, and inventory? Really?...and I can't just switch between them in any simple way? You need to physically click exit every time you want to change one and then remember the key for the other menu that you want to go to. Seriously.

Don't get me wrong, Witcher 2 is still a good game. It's just that this seems to be what happens to every franchise when they start to see a little success. They try to make everything bigger, louder, and flashier at the expense of key gameplay elements. Thankfully Witcher 2 still has some fight left in it, but I can't help seeing the flaming pile DA 2 turned out to be, and find a little bit of that here.

It handles the story and nudity very maturely and has a great world filled with interesting lore and creatures. The fact you really get no new spells or anything is pretty boring and can be a major put-off. The spells you do get are limited and only some of them are useful. I found myself using the shield ability 70% of the time. This has nothing to do with play-style, but since fights put 3 guys against you who all attack at the same time and who can infinitely block and chain attack you, it is a must. The fire was useless and the mind control didn't even work when I used it. The combat seems great but has many flaws. They make blocking use the same bar as spells, which starts off with only 2 uses and doesn't regenerate fast enough. This means when your opponents can keep attacking and blocking, you really can't play defensive or offensive. They can block and counter or if u try to block you can only do it 2 times before starting to get hit. They should have made block separate. Some would say that is why the "roll" is there but usually it is too slow and doesn't really put you in a good position to counter. It is almost like they don't want you to be able to defend yourself. What RPG makes all your spells take 1/2 or 1/3 of your mana bar? None, because it is stupid and makes the game not as much fun, as there is too much time running around waiting for it to recharge. Then there is the graphics. They are beautiful but require too much to run them. With my top-of-the-line comp I was only able to run most things, and even those on medium settings and still with texture problems. This could be a major put-off for most. The biggest problem is the difficulty. I started out with "hard" and having been a gamer my whole life and playing most games on hard, I was appalled by how this setting was. Everything 2-3 hit you, which made the lack of defense even harder. That mixed with the crowds who could juggle you and it was too much. I would spend 1 hour replaying boss fights as well as random mobs. "Hard" shouldn't mean making the computer overpowered or making you every 30 min have to replay a part over and over for an hour. That;s not difficult, its just aggravating and time consuming. It doesn't challenge you, it just asks you to be flawless or get really lucky. Especially because you can't take potions in combat (why did they think this was a good idea) which means there is no healing yourself. If they would have included a sign that would be ok, but they didn't. This all comes to a head with the save system. I applaud the use of the quicksave, but then you cannot use it in battle, the time when it makes most sense. Since this is already too hard in combat, you should be able to save your progress, but you can't. This means you have to go the entire fight perfectly or after 5 min of a boss fight where you almost kill him but make one error you are forced to replay the entire thing again. I would like the ability to save after I kill each member of a party in battle, due to how unfair it already is that you are facing a party. This makes it seem like a glorified checkpoint system. But other than these glaring weakness and botched ideas, there is a good game at heart. I think it has to due with a wonky way of thinking in Europe how an RPG should be. Expand

Here are where I find the game has it shortcomings. 1. I can't say much about the graphics, because my rig (tried on 1gb ATI and NVidia) doesn't seem enough for more than low settings without serious drag. 2. I find it really hard to use the mouse. Sometimes, despite setting mouse sensitivity to low, I find myself facing 180 degrees away from where I want to be. Ironically, I have the opposite problem on the arm wrestling game, where I can't make my mouse stay on the yellow bar. Once the other guy gets going, there is no way for me to stop the descent. It makes this minigame one of the least enjoyable I've played in my 30 years of gaming and I'll avoid it as much as possible. 3. Often my keystrokes are missed, so that I push them multiple times to get something done. This increases as the game plays, which I guess means a memory leak and repeated on and off's. 4. I actually liked the character model for Geralt better in TW1. This one doesn't quite cut it for me.

I am a great fan of the old classics. The first Baldur's Gate game still stands out in my mind but I enjoyed the sequel, as well as Morrowind and Oblivion - the latter slightly less than the former. So I suppose it comes down to taste. I thought there were some good scripting moments but a lot of the time I had no real idea what people were talking about (perhaps a symptom of having played but not finished the first game) or even if I did know what they were talking about I just didn't care. I wasn't fighting my own fight but merely a pawn in a greater struggle I had no real sympathy for. I was really excited about the combat after the first couple of tutorial fights. I played through Demon's Souls a number of times and loved that and there were certainly similarities. But sadly that was as good as it got. As you upgrade your skills the combat becomes less and less skillful and more and more of a button-mash fest. This was a real disappointment.

So all in all I liked the game but certainly didn't love it. It was a big improvement from the first one in many ways and hopefully they can continue that trend with what will almost certainly be a third game. On the right track but not quite there yet. Good, but not great. 7.5/10

The beginning was beautiful and wonderful, don't get me wrong. The story, setting, characters, and map design felt fresh and great to play in. The combat has gotten more difficult, which I like to see in games (considering how many games like to go easy on players these days). However, I was not a fan of the potion-usage in the Witcher 2. In fact, I still question what was wrong with just keeping the Witcher 1's potion usage. Did they feel like being able to use your potion whenever was wrong? Unless I missed something, you could only use your potion when meditating, but it's a matter of opinons. When I entered the city in Chapter 3 (I believe), something felt off. It really did not feel like there was much to do and there really wasn't. The main quest line was a breeze and the dragon fight felt a little unsatisfying to me, it honest to god did not felt like I fought a dragon. And then in the epilogue, I did not like how they decided to have the bad guy (forgot his name, sorry) answer all your questions right there and then, instead of answering the questions slowly. He had at least 25 things to say (if you decided to listen) and I was sitting there wondering "Why couldn't they just answer some of these things over the game, not at once." And the ending was just so bland, it really had no meaning. The Witcher 1's ending was very intense and very story-compelling to me, they gave you a very good reason why the bad guy's were doing what they did. In the Witcher 2, the bad guy assassinated kings, which sparked off revolts, just because the king in the south caught him and said "I will start a new Witcher academy if you kill the king". Felt cliche and bland to me. To sum it up for any "tl;dr" people. First half of the game: Witcher 2>Witcher 1. Ending chapters of the game: Witcher 1 >>>>>>>>>> Witcher 2. Let's hope in the Witcher 3 that they can ultimately conclude this game series with a very interesting and mind-twisting ending. Expand

It's a good RPG but I found the combat system was a bit of a backwards step and spoilt what remained, the graphical performance was ropey at release despite having a high end PC... and TBH the effects didn't impress me to much, could have done this on the original's engine and would have been just as good.
