Despite some flaws on the second and third episodes, The Walking Dead : The Finale Season is the ending season all fan could wish for, with many great narrative choices and a message of hope very welcomed in such a game.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is a true gift that really allows for a proper goodbye to Clementine after a journey that went on for many years. A chance to enjoy one last time the legacy given to us by the already extinct Telltale Games.

If you’ve followed The Walking Dead all the way through, this tight and powerfully executed finale will be sure to satisfy. Get those tissues ready.

Whether unconsciously or not, the game manages to become a fitting representation of the history of Telltale, together with a teaser of their vision for the future and a heart wrenching goodbye to Clementine, after 7 years walking side by side with her. It exists due to the undying spirit of its creators who, like the band on the Titanic, kept on playing their music, and together with Skybound managed to offer a fitting and grounded end to this beloved series.

Just know that both the development teams at Telltale, and the smaller-scale one that was resurrected under Skybound didn’t let Clementine down.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead might not have invented this style of meaningful narrative adventure, but it certainly popularised it. It is tragic that its popularity led the studio’s leaders to run it into the ground, badly overstretching its staff on endless similar projects from Batman to Borderlands to Minecraft. The circumstances of this final ending are disappointing and unfair. But if The Walking Dead has taught us anything, it’s that things don’t always end well.

We conclude with great sadness this saga alongside Clementine. Even if it is quite short, the episode still offers us a great deal of emotion and action. Produced in the same manner as the previous episodes, it still brings some innovations and does not simply end the adventure softly. AJ takes off for the worse and for the better.

A solid ending, a bit rushed, but beautifully written. It doesn’t manage to get away from the bite of the same old formula and technical issues, which tarnish the final result of the game.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season hones in on the dynamic and relationship between Clementine and A.J. to produce some startling situations, choices, and ripple effects that thread throughout all four episodes. At times, the story is bogged down and stalled by the new free-roaming gameplay and myriad side characters that are never fully developed, but each episode has a satisfying conclusion that effectively sets up the stakes for a thrilling finale. It’s a moving but bittersweet ending, especially considering this was the last game Telltale worked on before shutting down.

With more interaction and better player choice, The Walking Dead: The Final Season might have transcended its predecessors. But as it stands, Clem’s adequate goodbye is aided by strong characters, long episodes, and apt nostalgia.
