This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Walking Dead: The Final Season Episode: 4 Take Us Back, does something that the series has not done in a long time. Since season 1 I have been hoping and waiting for that moment that made me connect with, not only the characters but everything about the game. Season 2 and Season 3 were major let downs in that department and it felt as if, as the seasons went on, you disconnected more and more from what the game was originally about. Not only season 4 episode 4, but Season 4 as a whole brought you back to the beautifully emotional first season of The Walking Dead series. With 1 episode less, it was just as effective. They were able to keep surprises through the episodes and keep it unpredictable, The Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 4 was a roller coaster from beginning to end, with either outcome you had in episode 3, choosing James or Lilly. They kept you at the edge of your seat with action, creepy characters, shocking attacks, and more. The big bang of the episode happens only half way in and has you questioning what is going to happen. Near the end, we finally get answers for the popular question of "What happened when Clem went to save AJ? Why was it so traumatizing." It was something a lot of people wanted to know, and a lot expected Season 4 to start out, at Mcarroll ranch. The Episode wraps up on a happy note and it is a beautiful end to an amazing game series. It is sad to let her go, because she became family and so dear to our hearts, but I'm also glad that the Clementine's story now got the proper ending. Thank you to Telltale for the story and characters & Skybound for making it possible for us to see the conclusion of Clementine's adventures.

But damn the starting point where you just die because you missed a button and it kills the immersion right at the boat. Also, really telling AJ that he needs to listen to Clem, killed Violet. I get it, but that just seemed weird. On top of that, why go to the flashback when you could of just shown AJ getting her out of there. The game did make me cry though, when it cut after the Ax was held up by AJ to Clem, it felt like season 1 all over again. Glad she is alive though and glad the team finished the game! Best of all, a choice actually made a difference in the game! Expand

So glad this was finished with a really emotional and good ending. However lots of lost potential but that is understandable considering how hard it must have been for such a small team to rebuild a game.
Very sad to see this story end. Best walking dead main character and story out of them all, imo

SERIOUSLY DON'T RUIN IT FOR YOURSELF

Wow what a fantastic work of art. The writing and performance of the characters powerfully affected me in a way no game previously had (or movie or book for that matter). Going into the final episode I was ready for something awful to happen to Clem but still foolishly hoping it would all work out. When she was injured in the final fight all my hope left me and the zombie bite felt inevitable. The story had come full circle and I braced myself for the tragedy of Lee all over again. However this time it was much worse since Clem is still so young, has an even closer bond with AJ, and AJ doesn't even have a bullet left. Even though it was predictable and I saw it coming, I still cried helplessly to see my favorite character saying her last goodbyes to AJ. I also cried knowing that I was saying goodbye to this franchise and that I would be leaving this game world alongside Clementine.

Then I was relieved to be able to play as Clem one more time in a flashback scene which gave me some much needed closure after the heartbreak of her cruel demise. When I next got to play as AJ outside the boarding school I had learned to live with the heartbreak and was happy to see that AJ had been able to cope with the loss of Clem and retain a hopeful outlook. Seeing the other characters happy and well reminded me that he wasn't alone and would maybe be able to heal with the support of the other kids. It also made Clem's death so much more heroic and meaningful. Plus finding and recovering her hat felt right and gave me something tangible to hold onto.

Finally as AJ walks into the courtyard you hear a familiar voice. After playing through the dream sequences where Clem talks to Lee, my first thought was "ok so now AJ also talks to his dead protector when he feels lost or confused. He must still have some serious PTSD." Then the camera pans and you see your beloved character alive and smiling despite her missing foot and crutches. Having just come to terms with her death this scene took me completely by surprise and brought forth an uncontrollable tide of emotion. I have never before cried tears of joy but I found myself sobbing uncontrollably as this game managed to snatch a happy ending from the jaws of tragedy. I felt relief but also pride in AJ for saving his dearest friend when everything seemed hopeless and pride in the telltale and skybound teams who made such an ending possible. I will always remember this series for pushing the boundaries of what is possible with video game story lines. I am so grateful to depart this series with a satisfying sense of closure that will allow me to remember these characters with a smile.

This season created problems and solved them, but the overarching themes of the series as a whole weren’t sufficiently addressed, and I feel as if the ending leaves too much unanswered. However, putting my feelings aside, it’s nearly impossible to hate on the final episode of The Walking Dead. It wouldn’t even exist if not for the outstanding effort from the developers and publisher, and for the sake of the fans like me, it was appreciated.

After a turbulent production, Clementine and The Walking Dead series have both been given the ending they deserve. Not all of Take Us Back lands smoothly, but the finale remains true to the tone of this season and delivers a satisfying conclusion that fans will be talking about for years to come.

Though it introduces new ideas and perspectives to players, the final episode of The Walking Dead drags on a bit too long in order to bring Clementine’s seven-year journey to a close.
