Great piece of interactive fiction. After reading other reviews, I was worried that changes in how the story is told will make it much worse than the first Season. Far from that: story is good, emotions are still there.

Moreover - there are improvements to how gameplay elements interweave the story so we do not have sections that break storytelling (like Drug Store in Season 1).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Excellent story, characters, drama, etc that comes close to matching the greatness of season 1. Some of the character interaction was a bit implausible (characters flying off the handle all the time just to advance the plot). Also there wasn't any lasting relationship between the main characters (eg. Clem & Lee) because everyone seemed to be dying all the time. Expand

Season 2, I think it is great as a sequel. The story is good, for a zombie game, for those who don’t know the walking dead is more about how the characters evolve during a zombie apocalypse than the apocalypse itself. I believe the game does really good at that, especially for the main character, you can see how this main character has changed and keeps changing after what happened in season 1 and now, in season 2. I think very little games and, in general, pieces of entertainment achieve such good management in character developing. As I mentioned, the story is good and it has plenty of tense moments and hard decisions for you to experience and make, it is a good thrill. In terms of other stuff, I personally like the graphics a lot; it is let’s call it comic book styled. The voice acting and sound effects are pretty good as well, so basically all you need to have a proper experience.

Another good thing is that IMO you can replay the game a few times and try different decisions as some of these have a huge impact in subsequent events.

Overall, another good story here, if you liked season 1, don’t think about it, you’ll like this one as well. Finally, It might be worth mentioning this might not be your kind of game. Although the story is quite intense, the gameplay itself is kind of slow paced as you mainly just walk around, talk and observe, so if you like very dynamic games with a lot of action and player interaction, this might not be your thing.

Succeeds sometimes in telling a story, but the pacing is all wrong. The story peaks at episode 3, after this time there is no clear objective (unlike in season 1 where you knew exactly what Lee was shooting for). This is a problem, because when the game is ending and trying its hardest to tug at heart strings you don't care anymore; it has pushed you away by whipping characters into frenzies over increasingly arbitrary or inconsequential events. Your companions will betray each other, come back, kill people, cry, whine and everything in between and you'll be thinking: "is this even supposed to be the same character? Where is the consistency?" When they die or leave, they just feel fake and it is the ultimate problem with this installment of the series.

I was also frustrated jumping through hoops to get it to run. Apparently most users have trouble because they have a controller plugged in (download "dinput8.dll" from the internet and put it in the folder with the executable). I had to reinstall dx9, restart multiple times, add firewall and antivirus exceptions, and modify the permissions of the application before it would run. Seems like a lot of work for an 8.5hr game...

The basic flaw of the season is the lack of purpose. You don't have a major goal really at any time, you don't feel like there's a natural flow and so all the little events, personal drama, human loss and so on end up feeling rushed and haphazard. The other characters are either unbelievable or just never fully developed before they disappear and this is in stark contrast to Season 1.

The strength of Season 2 is still the same - great general mood, easy and intuitive interaction with the story and a strong lead character. It's definitely worth playing but not nearly as good as the first.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah, it's a pretty decent game. The quality of the visuals, audio and general presentation have been improved, but what everybody cared about The Walking Dead: Season One was the story. And the story here still is engaging, and there are hard choices and everything that made the first game great, but Clementine doesn't really work as a protagonist, at least not to me. It kind of breaks the immersion to see an 11 year-old child act like an adult, whereas if the zombie apocalypse was real, she was probably going to get herself killed within the first months with zombies. Oh well, since they killed Lee in the first season -I marked the review for spoilers, you were warned-, they should have moved on to another group of survivors, or at least scrap Clementine as the protagonist. After the great success that the first "season" of The Walking Dead was, I was totally hyped and ready for round 2 with this game. Sadly, Season 2 fails on just about every level to surpass or even meet the original's quality. Telltale's Walking Dead now suffers from the same issues that the TV show is burdened by: overall terrible writing with characters who have very generic motivations who get killed off when the writers run out of ideas for their storylines. Unlike the original, the characters have no clear direction or plans for survival beyond finding food and shelter for the day; while this is reasonably realistic, its also incredibly boring. A domino effect of hurt feelings goes through this story, with characters behaving erratically (often contradicting their previous motivations and ignoring friendships) because other characters were behaving erratically. Everytime something bad happens, Clementine has to save the day while the adults bicker and threaten to kill each other. Most character's actions in these episodes are illogical and your choices and actions have even less consequences than in the original game.

Even with Telltale behind the wheel, TWD: Season 2 has already fallen into the shallow strides set by the TV show. While I still recommend the original, Season 2 is a decidedly phoned in 8 hours of "gameplay" that isn't worth wasting your time on.

The first game had its problems, but everybody didn't care much because of the amazing story.
After waiting almost a year of "episode making" you expect at least a better gameplay/storytelling, but not even that... Speaking of episodes, that's what this game is: a semi-interactive series with a bad story. You don't even feel that you affect the world around you, differently from the first

For some reason, they removed the keyboard shortcuts of the dialog. But don't worry about that, you will stop carrying for the story at some point.
Well, the graphics are really better, but that's the only thing they improved from the last game. THE PART THAT NO ONE CARED!
With bad dialog choices, invisible walls and horrible gameplay, the game turns to be as linear as Medal of Honor Warfighter. Doesn't matter what you do in the game, it will happen what the developers want to happen, and the only excuse they have for that is that the game is """tailored""" by the player. Everyone who played it know the level of **** on that.

With polished graphics, worse gameplay, story, storytelling, dialog choices and the lack of impact that you do on the world, The Walking Dead: Season Two is a complete disaster. Luckily for the developers, the game is sold in episodes, which grant they some more money and make the players think that they are actually listening to reviews and complains, and are going to improve the game based on them.

You want a game with real choices and a good story? Play Spec Ops: The Line. It has better graphics and loading time is practically the same of TWD: S2.

But in a year long gap between two season Clementine matured a lot and became tougher. Even though everyone says that she's just a child and can't survive on her own, she constantly proves them wrong and shows that she clearly adapts better to zombie apocalypse than adults. Can't say much about other characters in this game. Some are good-written, some aren't and some are killed before you can begin to sympathize with them.
And this brings us to the main flaw of Telltale Games' games - your choices do not matter as much as you may think. Yeah, sometimes your choice would lead to the death of some character but about 2/3 of them die anyway and you can't do anything about that, so if you play the game again you may find out that that one time, when you were desperately thinking should you rob a guy with medicine or not, does not matter - that guy is still being robbed, if not by you, than by your partner.
Gameplay-wise it's the same game, since there is no point in changing working mechanics of story-driven interactive movie. And once again I want to note an amazing soundtrack by Jared Emerson-Johnson which blends really well with storytelling and beautiful on it's own. A real shame Telltale Games still haven't released it or the one from the previous game for sale.
Overall it's a good experience, still better than TV series, season 3 when?

I know, i know - being to harsh on the game. But since Season 1 i had quite high expectations.

Overall, the entire story feels Weak, while characters - a bit blend and undeveloped, or rather samey, i guess.
Clementine as the protagonist seems alright at first, but creates problems further into the story, where her weight on the group's decision is that of an adult, not of an 11 year old girl.

Main down however, is that your choices don't matter at all and many times choices are the same just differently worded. Same argument can be applied to Season 1, but the story of Season 1 was strongly driven, and choices micro-mattered and were at least consistent. In Season 2, several times, you'll be offered 3 dialogue choices which lead to the same consequence, and i as a player felt locked into a straight jacket. Not my kind of fun.

    So, for example:
SPOILER BELOW (which just killed it for me):
You have a choice to rob Arvo or not. Whether you chose to rob him or not, next time he encounters you, he accuses you of robbing him. You (as Clementine) DO NOT HAVE a choice to tell your group that you never actually robbed the bastard.

Here's the problem - as a player you have choices which range from black to white, left to right, good to bad (with boundaries often blurred and sometimes clear). In order for story to move along, a specific choice needs to be made. Since the story is linear, your choice matters little. That is fine. It's interactive fiction after all, which is enjoyable on its own. The problem, as i've said is the following - when you do not hit the correct choice in the rhetoric, the characters around you need to bend themselves in order to force the CORRECT choice. So let's say, to move along the story needs a choice "LEFT". You press "RIGHT". The character whom you are speaking with will "convince" you that "LEFT" is actually what you want, even though that character was built in such a way as to support the choice "RIGHT". When characters become props or interchangeable cogs in the story, all submersion is broken. Characters become these generic dolls, who can fill in any dialogue, and turn the story anyway required, even if it goes against their portrayed nature. By contrast, Season 1 was very subtle and balanced in this regard; the charades worked there. Not in Season 2.
As an example, try killing Arvo.

In sum, it's ok. If you played Season 1, you'll probably buy Season 2, and might find it a very good sequel. As for me - i'm stopping here. No Season 3 for me.

I find that as I go through season 2 that the game is TOO LINEAR! You have too little choice in affecting the outcome and it absolutely becomes annoying. In season 1 you appear to have a lot more freedom of choice (with the exception of a few) and were not railroaded just to tell a story

The game-play and graphics are a lot smoother than that of Season 1, forming a hopeful future for the upcoming Season 3....

This game is better than the TV show, just saying. The walking Dead season two telltale games.

This game is not as good as the first telltale game but it's still well done. The characters this time are okay for the most part, but Kenny and clementine are the two best parts of this game. The game play is good and the gore is even more shocking in this.

This is a brilliant game by itself however when compared to S1, it falls short of expectations. Like always, TWD focuses on character development rather than a story. S2 fails to develop strong relationships with any of the characters thus not striking the emotional chord of the player. However, if you've played S1, you must play it.

The game is a good sequel to the previous season. It is not as good as the first one but still a great game.
The gameplay feels like the creators wanted to push more action and quick time events into this story based formula, and I can't really tell whether this was a good decision.
The story itself feels a little less engaging. It does keep you thrilled for almost all of the episodes

The story itself feels a little less engaging. It does keep you thrilled for almost all of the episodes but it also more predictable. When you land in a peaceful moment, you know things are just too good to be true and that something is going to happen that is going to ruin the whole situation. But it is still a great story full of characters that evolve in a direction that seems justified.
The game ends with one of the hardest decisions I had to ever make in a video game and leaves me wondering if I did right.

It is an enjoyable and engaging story, and it's nice to be around (actually playing) Clem, who remains one of the most memorable characters in gaming history. As usual, the game mechanics suck badly, and as you'd expect, there's not a lot of control over situations. - You are always at the mercy of happenstance, or other foolish adult choices, otherwise the story (like the TV series) would never progress - you'd always be armored and fortified properly, rarely facing dread danger because you'd thought ahead. But that's the nature of a story-driven game. The writing is excellent (much better than the TV show), and voice acting is superb. Facial animations are well done and the graphical art style is wonderful. As many others have written, the deep emotional impact just isn't there; you never (or only slightly) connect with any of the characters. The hands-down best sequence of the game only proves that the first season was far superior at that. This game essentially admits it can't compete with the first, in particular, Clem's connection with Lee. In one of the optional endings (thankfully I didn't choose it) the story tries, but epically fails to try to reproduce that heartbreak. But it is totally unbelievable and just doesn't hit the note. More darker and deeper sequel, great and sad for sure, personally I prefer this over the first season

There's a remastered version available now, together with all the other games in the series, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series, which is superior to the original game in terms of visuals and overall presentation. The remaster does a great job of bringing the game up to today's standards, although the original game still holds up well in terms of graphics. I highly suggest you consider playing the remaster because it is superior.

"The Walking Dead: Season Two" is a commendable sequel to a remarkable predecessor, although it falls slightly short in comparison. The game features shorter episodes, simplified gameplay, fewer puzzles, diminished interactive elements, and reduced character development. Nevertheless, its storytelling remains strong. The installment brings improved graphics, animations, artwork, and abundant dialogue choices, including better-executed Quick-Time Events.

While the story effectively continues from the first game, choices from the previous installment and its DLC make a minor impact, affecting select scenes and dialogues. The game maintains a consistent core despite the importance of choices. Certain decisions hold enduring consequences, altering character dynamics and scenes, even though some narrative aspects remain consistent. The emotional attachment to a character in this installment mirrors that of the protagonist from the previous game. The game, while not matching the emotional intensity of its predecessor, has its own merits and invokes feelings of sorrow.

An unexpected highlight is the presence of multiple endings, a departure from the first game's singular conclusion. "The Walking Dead: Season Two" meets expectations and, while considered weaker in comparison, it manages to shine on its own. To illustrate the distinction, if this game is rated 10/10 (which it is), the first would be an 11/10.

The game plays on emotions with ease and I think only a heart of stone could prevent you from feeling moved by some scenes. [Nov 2014, p.62]

The further we get from that finale the deeper it sinks in. You need to experience it. [Dec 2014, p.78]
