Familiar isn’t always bad, and in the case of The Surge 2, familiar is just aggressively fine. Adding cinnamon to oatmeal doesn’t create a flavor explosion, but it makes the experience that much more pleasant. With The Surge 2, the folded world map is that cinnamon, adding just enough flavor to keep me interested the whole way through.
  2. It’s that rejection of fast travel and a devotion to twisting paths that makes this one of the purest devotees of an old Souls philosophy. The carefree amputation of half the city’s populace is keeping my fingers and thumbs entertained, sure, but the shortcuts and secrets are keeping my brain occupied, especially in the later parts. If you missed the first Surge, but always meant to take a look, hop into this one instead. Think of it as a shortcut to a better game.

Okay, so hear me out. I do NOT...I repeat, I do NOT like Souls-likes games. They simply do not appeal to me. All that extreme trial-and-errorOkay, so hear me out. I do NOT...I repeat, I do NOT like Souls-likes games. They simply do not appeal to me. All that extreme trial-and-error gameplay. Did not play Bloodbourne, did not play Sekuro, did not play Dark souls.

Now....THAT being Said. I ab-so-lute-ly LOVED The surge 1. For some reason the atomosphere and the whole sci-fi aspect of it drew me in and I played it start to finish at least 3 times in the past few years. And the surge 2 has proven to be just as much fun, and I dare say, it improves on the formula of Surge 1.

The combat system really is what carries the game and the whole sense of progression you get throughout is immensly satsifying.
Unlike some other RPG games where your "Level" is basicly nothing but a stat increase that just scales with the enemies and vice-versa. In the Surge your progression is actually quite noticeble. The enemies stay the same, in the sense that their hitpoints and level do not increase. But your overal skill and armor/weaponry DO increase as you gather new gear and weapons and upgrade them. So the challange remains, but your impact changes drasticly. And that is just very satisfying.
Being able to eventually kill certain enemies with a few well placed strikes whereas before you really had to whither them down hit-by-hit.

The lore is being dived into a bit more this time around, but...this is very subjective to personal taste. To ME, it was fine. I`m quite neutral in this.

The point I am really trying to make is...if you`re usually NOT into souls-like games...then you should give this a try. This game and its series is highly underappreciated.
The whole SCi-Fi genre feels great, and it's more of an exploration/action/rpg than a hardcore souls-like game. *IN my personal opinion.

Get it on sale if you must, but I tell you, it'll be money well spend. The gameplay and the mechnics in this game are enough to keep your entertaint for at least 20+ hours.

Here's hoping that surge 2 finally puts this game on the map, because it does deserve a spot.
