Same problems as the first game; terrible level design, cheap enemy placement, claustrophobic environments, frustrating and repetitive combat, irritating gear upgrade system, etc. It’s an improvement over the last game, and it looks like nice, but it isn’t enough to overshadow the games glaring flaws.

A pretty good soulslike game that introduces its own mechanics to the genre, however, it relies to heavily on its progression system, going too far in a grind-to-win direction.

Can be rather repetitive at times, but it`s a good sequel, has a fun combat and simple but interesting character customization. Some welcome changes like parrying can spice up the combat. The voice acting it`s pretty bad for most characters.

Okay, so hear me out. I do NOT...I repeat, I do NOT like Souls-likes games. They simply do not appeal to me. All that extreme trial-and-error gameplay. Did not play Bloodbourne, did not play Sekuro, did not play Dark souls.

Now....THAT being Said. I ab-so-lute-ly LOVED The surge 1. For some reason the atomosphere and the whole sci-fi aspect of it drew me in and I played it start to finish at least 3 times in the past few years. And the surge 2 has proven to be just as much fun, and I dare say, it improves on the formula of Surge 1.

The combat system really is what carries the game and the whole sense of progression you get throughout is immensly satsifying.
Unlike some other RPG games where your "Level" is basicly nothing but a stat increase that just scales with the enemies and vice-versa. In the Surge your progression is actually quite noticeble. The enemies stay the same, in the sense that their hitpoints and level do not increase. But your overal skill and armor/weaponry DO increase as you gather new gear and weapons and upgrade them. So the challange remains, but your impact changes drasticly. And that is just very satisfying.
Being able to eventually kill certain enemies with a few well placed strikes whereas before you really had to whither them down hit-by-hit.

The lore is being dived into a bit more this time around, but...this is very subjective to personal taste. To ME, it was fine. I`m quite neutral in this.

The point I am really trying to make is...if you`re usually NOT into souls-like games...then you should give this a try. This game and its series is highly underappreciated.
The whole SCi-Fi genre feels great, and it's more of an exploration/action/rpg than a hardcore souls-like game. *IN my personal opinion.

Get it on sale if you must, but I tell you, it'll be money well spend. The gameplay and the mechnics in this game are enough to keep your entertaint for at least 20+ hours.

Here's hoping that surge 2 finally puts this game on the map, because it does deserve a spot.

The artistic style of this game is mind blowing and highly inspired. And while The Surge is indeed heavily inspired by Souls, there are many features of this game I see as improvements to the genre. Being able to target and extract weapon and armor upgrades from your enemies is so freaking cool. I have experienced issues with the game crashing on start up. Luckily, it hasn't crashed once while I've been playing. It's also performing quite well on a fairly old PC. After finishing it, I'll likely go back and play the original. Expand

This is a considerable step up from The Surge 1. It's clear that the devs were working on a small-medium budget, yet they did an excellent job. I definitely would like a 3rd game in this series. There's still more room for improvement and polish. The story could be better. More inventive and fun bosses could be added. More weapons and armor to play with. More enemy variety. The sky is the limit with these series. Deck13 - the devs - have done a good job with The Surge 2. Hopefully it makes them a lot of money, so that they go on to make The Surge 3.

For people wanting to get into games similar to darksouls, just go directly to darksouls or bloodborne. This is rather of putting, The second after the first boss you get an equipment which have the function of deleting all your currency without warning just for wanting to try it out. Instead of the great feeling when you defeat the boss and get good loot they really took it all away, which sucks when it was quite the amount early on.

The gameplay it self is pretty good, good combat mechanics, a little getting used to the blocking mechanic, but it is fine otherwise.

It does look pretty good aesthetically,

What this game need more then anything is a proper tutorial to not scare people away from the soul like games genre.

So far worse than The Surge 1 in more or less every way.
    - Horrible performance, and the graphics don't feel better than TS1 which ran flawlessly
    - It's like there is a grey fog filter over the screen - For an over-the-shoulder game they sure made a lot of tight spaces with the level design - First boss fight feels nowhere near as cool as any of the boss fights in TS1 - Dumbed down

    - Dumbed down leveling mechanics. No weapon skill anymore?
    - Online stuff. Ugh, Agree to our eula! Here is a paint drone to leave spray stuff for other players!
    - Most of the combat moves are copy/paste from TS1. Makes it feel more like a DLC than a new game.
    - There is no Song
    - Parrying seems ridiculously hard to time

Let's see if I can find some positives
+ Combat still feels good, probably because it's copy/paste from TS1 like I mentioned above...
+ Seems to be more focus on quests. Not sure if that is a good thing. They're pretty boring so far.
    + More weapon types

It's not a *bad* game, but The Surge 1 was so much better. This has none of that magic.

Edit: Bumping my score from 6 to 8. First few locations are rough, but it gets better. The combat is oh so awesome, and I'm somewhat enjoying the story

But as it turns out Surge 2 is in almost all important points actually worse than Surge 1.
The only improvements compared to its predecessor where made in the combat mechanics, upgrade system and small quality of life updates. But otherwise:

    - worse level design
    - worse story
    - worse graphic
    - worse lighting
    - worse frame rate and hardware stability

I spare you with the details about the uninteresting npcs, boring bossfights and bare bone story design and come right to the points which really matter:

The worst parts of this game are the unimaginative level design, with far to many narrow maze like alleyways, connected together in a convoluted way and flooded with overcrowded randomly placed level assets. And the careless low effort graphics.

Those two things combined make the game look very cheap and not very fun to navigate through and explore. Its not even that every single texture, or asset is bad, but the few good and sharp textures and assets which are undoubtedly in this game just drown under all the mediocre half finished assets. And none of the assets is carefully placed in the levels to make the level feel believable. It's almost as if the level designers just randomly dropped them into the level, while wearing a blindfold. I understand that they are going for a destroyed city in a chaotic state of emergency and decay, but not every maze like area with randomly thrown together assets is an interesting place to explore. The only exception is the park area with all the trees, which was actually well made fun to play through.

And oh my god does the lighting in this game look artificial and ugly. You have this silent hill looking fog hanging around everywhere on the map combined with one of the worst skyboxes and most artificial looking bloom infested skylights and lighting I have seen in a while.Objects which stand in the shadows have no shadow details. Objects which stand in the bright sunlight have no highlights or reflections. Many metallic objects have almost no reflections either.

This game is not a total disaster, because it has good combat and animations, but its also not far away from being one.Seems as if Deck 13 had not nearly enough developer to fill this giant sandbox with life and make it look good in the available development time.Even starving long time souls fans should consider here very carefully if it is really worth it, going through all that trouble, before buying the game.

Rather, buy Surge 1 instead, which while also not being perfect, is clearly the better game.

The mechanics keep me enthralled, I generally like the combat and the technical setup of your character, but the extreme - and often cheap - difficulty tends to drive me crazy, especially when it comes to boss fights.
The Surge 2 is a Souls-LITE game: whereas most such games nowadays tend to veer towards excessive difficulty (hint: people lauding the fact it took them hours and hours to beat a boss in Sekiro), TS2 gives you a challenge that you can generally win, as long as you are careful. I'm not saying it's too easy: there are definitely areas where you are at serious risk, for example where multiple stagger rifle-wielding policemen are around, but the huge difference is that healing is abundant. By hitting enemies, you recharge health injections, the you can then use without needing to suspend combat, which means that there's a lot of room for small mistakes. You usually die when fighting multiple enemies, and you can often avoid just that with a bit of careful planning.
I love drawing my own map, area by area, and seeing previously inaccessible areas unlock once I get a new power. I love the amount of customization you can put in your gear. You cut limbs from enemies and acquire new blueprints for those part you cut off, plus the materials to build them There are dozens of different armor sets in three flavors (predictably: light, medium and heavy) and lots of weapons, which varies wildly in stats and bonuses, some of them being especially suited for certain areas or certain enemies. There are also a lot of different implants, power ups you can install which give additional bonuses. They may make you more resistant to poison, or tell you the direction of an incoming attack, so that you can more easily use a directional parry, which is strong to begin with but can be further enhanced by using specific implants. You can customize your experience based on how you like to play; for example, I favor the light and fast attacks of double rigged weapons, but sometimes pick a more powerful single handed weapon with extra reach, depending on the situation. Different weapon classes have not only different stats but also very different combos, which allows you a lot of flexibility in taking down your enemies.
When I'm grinding enemies for parts, I use an implant that reduces my energy buildup but doubles the limb yield; when exploring new areas, I use sturdy, protective armor and defensive implants. The UI helps you out, by allowing you to set up three different setups and switching among them in an instant. You can also mark several weapons as favorites and rapidly cycle among them. The same goes for drone weapons - yes, because you also gain a drone early in the game, acting as your somewhat limited ranged weapon. On the other hand, you can also acquire an add-on that attracts human-sized enemies, staggering them for a couple of seconds.
There's really a lot to say about the technical aspects of this game and you aren't forced to pick the absolutely most efficient build, you are free to experiment and enjoy. This is much more Jedi Fallen Order than Dark Souls here, and if you like the combat but not the cheap shots or the excruciating difficulty of the latter, you can't go wrong.
The only drawbacks are some technical imperfections: the game sometimes crashes to desktop and certain armor sets which sport flowing robes have glitchy animations. Everything else is mostly fine with me; levels load fast, graphics are good enough, music is ok.

Just finished the game. I had buffed up for the final fight, abandoning my favorite light armor and double rigged weps in favor of a much sturdier MG Cerberus heavy armor and the deadly Soul Edge - pardon, sword - from Capt. Cervantes. Turns out that the final level 10 mobs you encounter shortly before that fight, are MUCH more dangerous than the boss himself, who posed very little threat to my uber warrior. That's how i like it, I prefer a constant challenge to excruciating and unfair boss fights.

Expand

Game is nice. Great fighting system lots of veapon and armor variety but it felt too long, especially second part of the game. Also I wish there was more options in developing your character.

Gameplay is an improvement from the original version, but it runs and look three times worse. With an RX 5600 XT The Surge 1 runs the game at max settings with pure ease. The sequel stutters at any setting and looks worse too. They messed up this port, needless to say. Ruins in the game.

The Surge 2 is a "soul"-like in a futuristic setup. It is not overly difficult compared to its pairs.

The world is well crafted and is full of shortcuts to find and unlock. You will often find yourself lost and realize your "safe" point is right behind the door you just unlocked.

There are many weapons and armor with their associated perks. You can craft the ones you found schematics. For this you will cut the limbs of our enemies in a gruesome animation.

The game is not overly linear. With my preference for exploration I found areas way before I would following the story, which helped for the bosses when I came back in the early parts of the world.

Having played "The Surge 1" is not required to play this game.

    Warmly recommended.

But as it turns out Surge 2 is in almost all important points actually worse than Surge 1.

The only improvements compared to its predecessor were made in the combat mechanics, upgrade system and small quality of life updates. But otherwise:

    - worse level design
    - worse story
    - worse graphic
    - worse lighting
    - worse frame rate and hardware stability
    - completley different tone to the first game.

Surge 1 for me was a deadspace like horror game. True scifi horror with plenty of jump scares and intense battles. Dark humour and bleak disturbing side quests. Also amazing cgi monitor screens with interesting characters and complex themes. Inexplicably none of rhis is present in the surge 2.

The reason for the shift in tone is because the developer did not rehire the same writers, or any writers and in their arrogance wrote their own story and script. The result if a shallow, lifeless world with bland directionless characters. This aspect is a huge step down from the first game.

A good example of how the lack of good story telling impacts on a single player game is the opening of s1 vs s2. Surge 1 has a fantastic wheel chair segment where a disabled man is given a second chance through technology to walk. But that gift comes with horrific consequences which is the surge campaign. But MILD SPOILERS Surge 2 starts with a bad cgi and a crash and then you wake up in a prison for some reason which is being attacked. But its a mess and doesnt make sense and it goes nowhere with an obsure mystery. Part of the issue is the character creation which feels horribly out of place as does the loss of Warren the protagonist of The Surge. But the shift to a pointless system and like the game, your character has no voice.

Rather, buy Surge 1 or the excellent dlc instead, which while also not being perfect, is clearly the better game.

In general, I got the same pleasure from this game as from the first one, but for different reasons. There was a full-fledged interesting story with an atmosphere in the 1st game. There was a full-fledged interesting story with an atmosphere in the 1st game. Here - there is a plot, that is not bad, but easier and simpler than in the first game. There are more bosses and they are interesting. A map appeared at last(although it is common with the conditional markings of zones, but it is understandable). Also there is a hint for the armor sets appeared: when you cut off one part of a new set, the contours of the remaining parts appears in inventory. There is more variety in the materials(10 levels and lower can be made up of higher ones, which eliminates the need to run through the whole game after each new set or weapon that you want to put on yourself). Sometimes we have here a good music in a right places. But mostly - a pretty boring sound design.
And now about the cons: Disgusting optimization in the first half of the game, in park location on the rock, and from the second half of the game - everywhere(I had to remove shadows and highlights from the game settings). As before, you cannot disassemble any useless junk, only what you made yourself, and the implants. BUT! Garbage in the form of unnecessary implants must be carried with you, so that repeated ones will give more chips to upgrade HP injections. And the weapon you still can not disassemble. Graphics ...well, I got used to it after some time of playing, but it's terrible. Colors are too bright, lighting is too dark, shades are too bold. It seems that the very low level of graphic-work in the game was tried to hide behind not particularly pleasant density and darkness, and it was unpleasant to the eye.
And finally: F*ng parry ...no, I understand, the idea itself and the mechanics have the right to be, but in this game parry is shoved everywhere and on everyone. I don't like parrying, but when I came across a boss that cannot be defeated without parrying, I was very angry. Somehow learning the local parry I fought him, but what the hell? The player should have a choice of how to build his battles, and not - either this way or *** yourself.
    ...Now about DLC...
An extremely disappointing thing. Very short, bringing a real drop of something new to what the main game already offers. There are only two bosses(well, they are at least interesting, yes). And an extremely uninteresting ending. Well, it would be interesting ending, if everything did not end so suddenly mediocre.
...Even so, I got more pleasure from the game than disappointment. For this I will put a good rating. Just not very high.

Deck13 keeps improving and The Surge 2 is their best soulslike yet. Unfortunately it's still far from the quality of the top offerings from FromSoft and Team Ninja.

Improvements over The Surge include faster and smoother combat and much more environmental variety. The new directional parry mechanic is a mixed bag. The directional aspect adds almost nothing over having non-directional parries, and the overuse of difficult-to-read windup animations in enemy attacks gets really tiresome. Also, placing even more mechanics on the right stick which is already used for lock-on and limb selection makes for some frustrating mistaken inputs, such as losing your lock-on by accidentally clicking the stick trying to do a directional parry. On the positive side, the big damage opportunity reward after a set number of successful parries on bosses is fun, and the limited but easily recharged healing system is good.

Level/area design is much better than The Surge, but is still one of the weakest points of the game. Very few areas are memorable, and several areas feel like they could have been randomly generated. Cramped, cluttered, samey, nonsensical and/or anonymous area design causes the large amount of interconnectedness to become confusing and tedious. "A jumbled mess" is another description fitting many of the areas. The exolines (zip lines) are pretty neat, but also provide the designers a means to do very lazy area designs.

The bosses are generally an improvement over The Surge, but some of the fights still suffer from misdirected gimmicks that fail to meld with the core combat mechanics. The "Metal Armor" fight being perhaps the clearest example. A couple of bosses are repeated several times over, and at least one boss is "just" a souped-up version of a regular enemy you've fought many times before.

The game has a quirky tone and feels a lot less dark and foreboding compared to the first game. I didn't really pay attention to the story.

There are a couple of technical issues. The upgraded engine (I assume) seems to run a bit worse than the previous one without really looking much better. The loading screen seems strangely decoupled from the main game engine, causing the annoying issues of sound effects continuing to play when entering a loading screen and the game actually giving you control of your character long before exiting the loading screen. It's probably possible to walk off a ledge before you even know you have control. The game crashed to desktop about once per hour (three times) before I set it to run as administrator, after which it never crashed again. Not really an acceptable solution on principle but it seems to work.

The list of soulslikes I would recommend over The Surge 2 include all of FromSofts offerings, both of the Nioh games and Code Vein. If you've exhausted all of that and still feel an itch to play a soulslike, I would say The Surge 2 is a decent choice.

With the environment changing from a factory to a city, The Surge 2 loses its appeal of heavy machinery. With a spiritual story and a confusing map, it was never really clear where The Surge 2’s gameplay or world atmosphere was heading. Luckily, changes in the game’s system are more clear. By making battles less challenging and improving the upgrade system, the game’s dismemberment-focused action has become genuinely more fun. That being said, there are just too many aspects that hold it back.

Graphics are rarely worth mentioning nowadays, since most games look good or great. That’s not The Surge 2’s case: sometimes graphics are so bad it messes with gameplay, as it gets hard to tell if it’s a puddle of water, poison or a chasm. [Issue#242, p.50]

Despite a few technical hiccups, The Surge 2 presents a marked improvement over its predecessors and an all-around good game.
