Dec 11, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai is the most incredible Metroidvania title I have ever played, featuring amazing stop-motion animation, fantastic storytelling with horror elements, and fun combat—all coming together to create a game you’ll easily love as much as I do.

Jan 9, 2025What is clear is that the overall experience as The Spirit of the Samurai is satisfying, even beyond having such special artwork. The voice acting is very well done, and the story, which also connects to the present in a way, kept me entertained for a few hours until the end credits.
-
Dec 12, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai is a decidedly particular game: it is full of very good ideas which, however, are never fully developed. The stop-motion style is still worth a try.
-
Jan 15, 2025The Spirit of the Samurai is a gorgeous game to look at, and while it can be enjoyable to play, some of the movement and combat is stiff.
-
Dec 19, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai is a very creative and ambitious game, although with nuances. It is a game that presents an interesting story, but its execution on a playable level leaves something to be desired. The stop motion animation is frankly impressive, but it seems to have been achieved at the cost of a lack of polish in its systems. The title loses important points because of all this, although it also wins because of the courage Digital Mind had to try something different.

Dec 11, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai combines stunning stop-motion visuals with challenging Soulslike combat and Metroidvania exploration. Despite impressive moments, the fun is sometimes tempered by frustrating combat and technical flaws. Fans of stylish action-platformers will find a unique challenge here, but it is not for everyone.
-
Feb 17, 2025It is obvious that it is put much effort into the game but the frustrating moments shadow all experience.
-
Dec 16, 2024A visually stunning and atmospheric stop-motion samurai adventure, thoroughly retro in its design, is ultimately betrayed by glitches, janky combat and punishingly unforgiving platforming.
-
Dec 12, 2024The peculiar trio in historical Japan has an impressive appearance, but sometimes unbalanced gameplay.
-
Dec 11, 2024It is a gorgeous game, with an excellent sense of atmosphere, and decidedly troubled gameplay. At its best, it plays like a classic rotoscoped platformer, which can feel charming in its own right, but at its worst, it is cumbersome and awkward. This Samurai most certainly has spirit, but his sword could use a little sharpening.
-
Dec 11, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai is a game bursting with creativity and ambition, but its execution often stumbles under the weight of its unique design choices. The stop-motion animation, while impressive, seems to have come at the cost of polished systems and streamlined gameplay. Despite its flaws, the game delivers an engaging and visually distinct experience that’s worth exploring for fans of experimental action titles. If you can overlook its rough edges and embrace its inventive spirit, you’ll find a memorable, if imperfect, adventure.
-
Dec 27, 2024The Spirit of the Samurai has a great and evocative imagery and a delightful stop-motion style. The merits end there, because the game developed by Digital Mind Games has problematic hitboxes and lacks of precision in attacks and jumps, ending up frustrating the players.
-
Dec 20, 2024Despite my admiration for this ambitious project, I can't give The Spirit of the Samurai a higher score. The unique stop-motion animation, atmospheric music and genuinely scary monster designs are very impressive, as is the ability to play as a cute kitten and Kodama. But as a full-fledged game, it falls short. Platforming issues, bosses that are too easy and rigid control systems, in my opinion, too often trade fun for unnecessary, time-consuming frustration.
-
Jan 12, 2025While the game boasts an impressive stop-motion aesthetic and engaging Japanese folklore-inspired visuals, its repetitive combat, clunky platforming, and structural issues undermine its potential. Despite some interesting combat mechanics, technical bugs and uninspired exploration create a frustrating and anticlimactic experience.
-
Dec 17, 2024The only real positive that can be said about The Spirit of the Samurai is its beautiful, stop-motion-inspired visuals. By the time the game ends, one can’t help but feel the studio might be better suited developing an animation rather than a video game, as the experience is marred by one-note combat and frustrating platforming segments.
-
Dec 16, 2024I want it to be known that I really wanted to like The Spirit of the Samurai. I am a massive fan of stop-motion animation, and any piece of media that utilises or seeks to evoke or pay homage to that style has earned my respect. That said, as well put-together as the cutscenes are, The Spirit of the Samurai is just not very fun as a game. From the clunky and unresponsive controls to the linear and murky levels filled with oddly placed traps and pitfalls, it can often feel like a slog to actually play. If you are a fan of stop-motion animation, then you may get something from the experience, but it is unlikely to be too satisfying for just about anyone else.
-
Jan 2, 2025The Spirit of the Samurai is a project born from an aesthetic idea: creating a stop motion action game. However, this vision failed to translate into enjoyable gameplay, plagued by control issues, a combat system that never truly shines, and forgettable platforming sections.

Edge MagazineDec 31, 2024Peering through these layers of disguise, then, what we're left with is a hotchpotch of conflicting ideas, a rickety, if not entirely charmless, hack'n'slash that feels plucked from an alternate timeline. [Issue#406, p.118]
-
Dec 19, 2024Even if The Spirit of the Samurai does little to endear you to its story, the animation provides a decent jumping on point. Unfortunately, it's squandered by the terrible quality of everything else.
