Finally got around to playing this game. forgot it even came out. to be straight to the point. its a simple game that borrows fallout mechanics. story nothing to get excited about. no romance, no side missions that will really standout. its just a simple easy going game that you really dont need to pay to much attention to. i hope the second one has more to it.

Although RPG mechanics aren't too complex and fighting mechanics are also not the best in the business and Sadly there wasn't any romances or deeply bonds with the crew or any NPC, overall experience was really enjoyable and definitely the other worlds is worth a shot! If you don't like wasting time just focus on main story and you will complete this game in no time. Expand

-- All of this wouldn't be a big problem if this game has a decent autosave mechanism. Sadly, it doesn't. Autosave is next to non-existent. You rely on your own manual saves.

This is truly a laughable piece of terrible spaghetti coding. I believe somewhere during the process of developing this game, the developer found out their open-world and open-end approach had just gone out of hand, so they invented this concept of "botched missions", so even if the player messed up all the missions, they can still "finish" the game. What a lame cop-out solution.

If you do want to try this game, read guides [diligently] and [in detail]. The game will be spoiled for you, but at least you don't have to restart the whole game just because you went to the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fallout: NV was able to acquire a fairly huge fan base and of course after such a breakthrough product of its time, many expected The Outer Worlds as a Bethesda-like RPG killer as a maximum or a brand new and unique Fallout universe competitor as a minimum. But Obsidian did neither.

Good game to play. Suitable for Fallout fans. The impression was spoiled by a small variety of weapons and armor, as well as unjustified SJW characters. Solid 6/10.

A solid action RPG from Obsidian. While impossible to live up to the hype and expectations from previous games, this is an enjoyable game while maybe missing some of the charm of similar games in the genre. Worth playing, but at times feels forgettable.

It's a good game and you can see where the idea came from as it's basically a story with many Fallout and Bioshock ideas but it's one of those games that will bore you quickly unless you play it for 2-3 hours, stop then come back to it another day to put in another 2-3 hours.

I really can't see anyone giving this a favourable review if they played the full 30 hour campaign in one or two

Summary: Great concept, but that's about it. A retrogame that isn't particularly well executed, has graphics about 15 years out of date, and isn't nearly as good as I thought it would be, but pleasant enough if you like the Fallout in Space idea. Very uneven writing. Very disappointing for Obsidian. It's ok. Barely. But not great, or even good.

    Cons:

    1. Graphics are AWFUL. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say it's a beautiful game. The artwork is nice but this is graphically on par with KOTOR or maybe Fallout 3. It's so bad it's beyond distracting. And I like retrogames like Wasteland 2 but it doesn't work as well in a FPS.

    2. Writing is very uneven. Some things are very funny, others are painful to read through, especially a lot of the "relationship" quests.

    3. Crashes frequently. Hard crashes, that require full restart.

    4. On Hard, I had unlimited money, just didn't feel that challenging overall.

    5. 30 Hours in, still disappointed with all the corporate intrigue. Maybe it gets better but not very exciting so far. Also, missions themselves are usually very simple and boring.

    6. Monsters respawn too quickly making walking through the same areas unnecessarily annoying. There's no reason to respawn them at all.

    7. Companions always run into your line of fire. Awful AI.

    8. Interface is far wonkier than it should be. I'm looking at armor at one character, switch to another, and instead of seeing their armor, it goes back to the default inventory screen, sigh.

    9. Some of the stat options are confusing. They hit you with a lot of info early without going into it. And then you realize that enhanced stats (like from a character boost) do not trigger special stat bonuses (i.e. you actually need a hard number in the stat to get the bonus like seeing what's in a container from lockpicking, before you add in bonuses from armor etc.).

    Pros:

    1. Fallout in space. AWESOME concept. Would have loved for this game to be well made.

    2. Sometimes the writing is very funny.

    3. Surprisingly fluid gun play, with occasionally good voice acting.

    4. Cute companion interplay.

    5. Quick load times.

    - Gameplay; A lot of RPG elements are inserted in the game, and most of them maybe not completly explored, but for me, i had a lot of fun trying different stats and builds, deciding who should i back up and who should i **** kill.

Overall, I believe it's nothing less than a good game. On the other hand, it's also nothing more than just good, and where I have seen, especially in the professional critics space, the game often lauded as Obsidian's return to form, I would argue if you want to experience something close to KOTOR 2, or even the high moments of Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, you will have to reach out for Tyranny or the Pillars of Eternity games instead.

Another thing I have seen pop up several times is "Fallout: NV, but in space" - and you could not be further from truth. Perhaps the only things that tie the two games (aside from the studio itself) are the use of a simplistic and overtuned weapon durability system and a silent MC. TOW is not Obsidian's attempt to do a complete version of FO:NV in space, but rather, an attempt to make their own Mass Effect, more specifically a trilogy / series setup of Mass Effect 1, where you build a team of specialists and run around trying to save the galaxy (with two teammates at a time), or with the humbler TOW - one solar system.

To be fair, it's pretty challenging to be completely original, if not impossible at this point, and the game does a lot to fix the issues of ME1. However, it also brings a couple new issues of its own, a lot of it due to Obsidian's attempt to make the game, especially in terms of the characters "quirky and original", and as a result, turning quite a few of them into some twitteresque morons. At the same time, the game often repeats some pretty stale tropes - and does it multiple times, sometimes within the span of couple minutes. For example, in the opening scene, which probably everyone already saw, as it is a part of the promotional materials for the game, the pre-teen cartoon trope of mad scientists gadgets not working so he has to push a button multiple times for it to miraculously work is used twice, in a span of some 4-5 minutes! I've lambasted Crackdown 3 for this recently, and I will say it again here: If you say or do something retarded, stating "Actually I was only pretending to be retarded!" afterwards doesn't fix or excuse your prior behavior, but makes you look even more retarded. "We were only doing a satire of stereotypes!" - Yeah, but you still flooded your game with characters based off of them, and in addition, you further made it worse by making them more fitting for a Tom & Jerry episode than an M rated game.

That being said, there are some genuinely interesting things about most of the characters, and there are moments where they have really well written and believable dialogue, but this makes things even worse, because it really clashes with their dumbass behavior outside of these moments. Honestly, it reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy, except the writers weren't really able to balance out and connect the wacky and serious moments, and so the game feels disjointed and goes from bat crap insane to noir thriller to realistic interpersonal relations drama and then back again all in the span of a few moments.

This is probably the largest complaint overall, actually. The game is disjointed, because it tries to be multiple things. It's trying to be ME1, a wacky parody of ME1, and an original Obsidian game, and is neither as a result. In some cases, you make a really big decision, and in one affected place you see a huge change, and in another, which should have a similar large effect applied to it, you get a one-liner mention of the whole thing and then nothing else. Some individual rare weapons are really interesting and original, but the weapon roster in general is just heaps of the same crap with the occassional "+3 fire damage". There's a bunch of factions that supposedly focus on different things, but they all use the same armor and weapons, just different colors, and so on.

The game does fix some issues of ME1 though - specifically, the "worlds" you visit are more condensed, there's much less running around tons of large and near completely barren maps, the pacing, especially in case of side content, is much much better as a result. The simplistic karma system is replaced with a much better one with individual relations with each faction, and your individual decisions themselves play a larger role, the dialogues are much better and most often not constrained to paragon/renegade/neutral/ask-question, and feel more natural, and so on.

The game also has a very distinct graphical style, a retro-futuristic mix between wild west and art deco and a few other elements, all locations and planets are pretty distinct and well crafter from design perspective.

Anyways, in the end, the game is saved by a few great moments and a handful of well thought out and implemented mechanics and design choices that stand well above the rest of the game, and I mean a lot above the rest of the game. Without them, solid 3/10.

There isn't a LOT of enemy variety but the ones you face are quite well designed, they're different enough and have their own strengths and weaknesses.

That being said, the game lacked any challenging content on any of the builds I have tried on the hard difficulty (full melee, sneak, guns blazing), the enemy A.I. is easy to overcome and the combat stats that you are able to get even early on end up overpowering them quite easily.

Supernova difficulty makes you pay more attention in managing your consumables and taking certain fights more carefully because you can't save but in the end the unique mechanics of the difficulty make the game more annoying rather than challenging.

Your companions have their own quest which is usually pretty good in terms of offering them character development but I wish they got more than just that.

The main story is quite short but it does offer different endings due to its branching narratives, although to be perfectly honest I've only found a handful of decisions to be somewhat hard to make due to their morally grey characteristics. Unless you're roleplaying an overtly evil character without any moral consideration then it's pretty obvious what you would choose to do most of the time. It's worth mentioning that there are a few side quests and areas that contain some endearing or humorous stories, especially if you bother reading messages on terminals as well for more context. I do wish they had more of those and cut back on some of the standard fetch/kill quests.

The dialogue is witty and creative most of the time. and the voice acting is quite good.

The sounds, music and graphics don't stand out in terms of overall quality but the world they've crafted is brimming with color and style. The character models and face animations could benefit from more polish.

There are some unique science weapons that can make the combat a lot more fun so I'd definitely recommend trying to find them.

Overall, it's an enjoyable game especially if you like the setting and premise.

TOW is a strange animal. It's well-acted, but full of situations where real human beings wouldn't react the way the characters do. While keeping reality at a distance is an acceptable literary form, TOW doesn't know how seriously to take itself. I can't tell if it's a satire of its subject matter or of the type of person who would be entertained by it. It hits you over the head with it's anti-corporate theme until you suffer a concussion, or otherwise start wondering if the employees at Oblivion are trying to tell us something about their working conditions. The target audience of this game is in the early teens, has a pigeon's attention span and is going through a really embarrassing communist phase. Another reviewer likened it to Bioshock: Inifinite, and that's a very apt comparison. It's full of useless power ups, bells and whistles designed to stimulate the reward centre of the brain, campy vending machines at regular intervals, fights that mostly feel the same, and moody and aloof characters who don't suit their dire scenery. The artistry in the game is a visual stomachache that repeats itself ad nauseam because the enemies respawn and the quest markers make you go back and forth across Monarch around thirty times. To give the game credit, it does actually give you some level of choice. I finished it twice, and the second time I sided with the Board all the way to the end. At least a pro-board playthrough is possible, even if there are no grand revelations to be had by doing so. That playthrough was also done on the hardest mode, where your stiff and dull companions can die permanently. The hardest part was keeping them alive to the end. I'm not sure if I'll keep my fondness of Obsidian alive though. I'll think twice before I buy another Obsidian game.

The problem with this isn't that it is a bad game (far from it), but the fact that it failed to reach its true potential… or maybe the expectations were simply too high, because there's nothing here that anyone can point to and say that it is terrible. Sadly, there's almost nothing that's great either, apart from the role-playing element and the quality of writing. The gunplay? Ok. The exploration? Decent. The plot? Fine. The dominant feeling here is of a game that is good enough so that you won't hate it, but also not as good for it to be the flawless classic that it could definitely be - but again, that's probably those darn high expectations speaking, because flaws or no flaws, The Outer Worlds shouldn't be missing from any RPG collection.

Usually, a planet has just one or two settlements and a bit of wildlands to explore. But that’s for the best – instead of exploring miles of filler content, Outer Worlds keeps you moving from planet to planet, from one tense situation to another. [Issue#241, p.34]
