It triumphantly provides a sensory experience that horrifies, chills, and warms your heart with all of its aspects in story, visuals, and sound. Though a bit basic with its gameplay, The Midnight Walk is a masterful work of art with an overflowing amount of love and care poured into the craft where even Henry Selick would be proud.

It's not perfect, but the world it offers, its art design, music, characters and stories will take you to a completely different land for about 7 hours. A dark, scary and real land that will stab you in the heart.

Part adventure horror, part digital representation of Tim Burton's dreams, The Midnight Walking must be played to be truly understood. Possibly wearing a VR headset, so that it can express the best of itself, involving and deeply moving, because in a flat version it loses effectiveness.

Nearly flawless storytelling, high-quality art direction, superb music... There are plenty of reasons to love The Midnight Walk, and Moon Hood does an excellent job of showing off its stop-motion expertise. Its few flaws are easily forgiven, as the offering is superb, and while the gameplay is relatively basic on PC and PlayStation, without being a hindrance to the enjoyment of the game, it is truly in its VR version that this title is magnified and truly takes off.

Immersive visual and sound design makes it easy to get lost in MoonHood’s dark fantasy story. There are weirdos like me that find comfort in horror games, but The Midnight Walk strategically and intentionally walks the line between cozy game and horror game. Come for the vibes, stay for the vibes, as you tread along The Midnight Walk.

The Midnight Walk offers a memorable adventure that's enchanting and bleak in equal measure, one that feels like wandering into a twisted fairytale. It's a gripping tale with beautifully crafted claymation visuals, held back only by some minor frustrations and not especially in-depth puzzles. MoonHood have delivered a great example of hybrid design between flatscreen games and VR, and it's a strong recommendation from me.

Unfortunately, the experience of playing The Midnight Walk leaves a little to be desired. It draws you in with its fascinating early chapters, but it can't quite keep up the same level of puzzling intrigue throughout the rest of the game. And unless you're a seasoned VR pro, you're bound to experience a little discomfort while playing. Still, if you're at all curious about the dreamlike world it allows you to inhabit, The Midnight Walk is worth playing on the strength of its story, visuals, and music alone.

The Midnight Walk is visually distinct and creates effective contrast between a Burtonesque 'grotesque' style and small moments of beauty thanks to strong lighting and composition. It's nice that players are given the option to experience the game's unique world up close and personal in VR. But beyond being a very cool immersive tour of someone's artwork, the basic gameplay doesn't feel particularly native to VR and the poetic narrative didn't resonate with me in a meaningful way. This walk might not be for everyone, but inside the headset is the best way to experience it if you love the style.
