It has an old school vibe, from the movement to the camera angles. The story's okay, weird and twisted but just okay. They could have done with the running sequences, those are never fun.

If youre new to the channel, I love layers of fear, I only metnion it in every other horror review I do, its one of my favorite horror games of all time, so naturally I have to play every game bloobr team makes, and unfortunately they havnt been that good since the observer, however with the medium, bloober team takes a crack at 3rd person horror, and while its far from flawless, it’s a pretty decent first attempt…
here you play as a medium, you get a call, you go to this creepy hotel to investigate the call, and things don’t get normal from there… reviewing this game was a roller coaster of feelings, as the medim is a roller coaster of quality.. the cutscenes are great, the voice acting, the chracters, the story, all amazing, but the game itself feels really dated, tons of texture pop ins, the game will chug along at times, and overall marianne feels super awkward to control, the cameras, the movements, everything to remind you that despite the acting and cutscenes =, this is indeed not a AAA title, it feels big budget indie, which is fine especially in the hands of bloober team, they are great at creeping you out and building intriguing environments.
As a medium you can go back and forth between your world and the spirit world, and you get to see both sides at a time, going back and forth to find items or interact with objecst to solve a puzzle or open up an area for the other, it really is a fun little back and forth puzzle game from time to time. However the execution isn’t quite the most enjoyable.. infact overall, The medium is probably one of the least enjoyable horror games ive played in a while, its slow and tedious, these sections while theyre a cool idea, never do anything fresh with it, youre basically doing the alive or dead version of everything you’ve done in horror games before but in accordion from.. Im over dead ends and fixing fuse boxes and finding valves… can horror games come up with literally anything else to do than find the things that’s missing….
Im so over this type of gameplay, im over being in the same areas for 10-20 minutes just clicking on stuff until I find a missing lever, its boring, borderline painful after a while, and really makes your game feel like a chore.
Please give me something new, the indie games industry pumps out 20 of these games every year.
I don’t mind it every once in a while, but when that’s the main hook of your game, I cant.. And with the medium lasting about 6 and a half hours, it feels twice that long with how slow paced it is…
But ultimately The Medium is saved by its cast of characters and story, I had to see where this was all going, even if it felt like it was going nowhere, enjoy this hotel for the rest of your life.
    I give the medium
    a 7/10

A correctly made adventure game for a few nights. I recommend. I hope the developers will make more games in a similar concept. Interesing fact is the action takes place in Kraków.

While certainly blessed with an interesting story and some interesting underlying mechanics, "The Medium" tries to imitate certain classic titles of the survival horror genre without grasping what turned them into those classics. They also mistook some of the mostly age-related flaws of those games and not only replicated them, but made them worse.

You don't get a masterpiece if you just imitate the terrible movement controls of those games and have the camera angle change three times whenever you walk through a room. And having to zoom in on any given item or document up to three times so that you can look at it, only to have to zoom out three times so that you can move again does not result in the kind of nostalgia the developers were obviously going for.

It's also one of those games where someone really wanted to make a movie, and did neither have the budget nor the experience to pull it off. Overall the narrative is decent, and despite some pacing issues and wooden animations the team succeded at creating the atmosphere they were going for.

You can see the inner battle of "The Medium" in almost every scene, but you can also see the inner battle of the game to stand on it's own feet and not just become a cheap copy - and I'm not sure that one has a happy ending.

Decent. The game's story is good. Gameplay is bare bones. Chase scenes with the game's primary villain lead to some genuinely adrenaline pumping moments. Environments begin to look drab and repetitive until you get outside the facility. The story drove me to see the game through to completion. The game has some unique elements which help make up for the minimal level of interactivity.

the art direction is simply out of this world. as a person who loved Beksiński art before knowing how to even read his name properly, I am amazed at how well his paintings and the whole world become a living entity. it's a bit less impressive in the tight interiors, partly because of the sometimes questionable placements of the camera, but overall the love and appreciation for pan Beksiński is felt in every second of this game.

the story is very decent, too. it manages a nice balance of predictability and genuine suspense and mystery, very familiar and mundane late-soviet things are nestled well together with some rather screwed up subject matters. if anything, for a foreigner who is interested in Poland, this game feels and plays very polish. being from a neighboring country, I quite liked the painful authenticity of the environment design.

the characters are quite interesting, too - probably my favorite out of all BT's games. they are solidly written, amazingly acted and have enough charisma to make drudging through the "gameplay" and at times disastrous level design at very least bearable.

because no matter how competent the game is, how well-animated, no matter how many expensive talents are involved, and how lofty the developer's ambitions are, this is still very much a Bloober Team's game, a stylish, unevenly paced walking simulator with tons of notes, unskippable chases from unkillable monsters who one-hit you and painful, miserable lack of any meaningful gameplay.

yes, the split-screen level design and puzzles are nice - the first couple of times. same as mirror puzzles. same as "dive" puzzles. 95% of the game is just walking, sometimes breaking into a ridiculously slow jog.

unfortunately, it's not the "Silent Hill successor" we've been promised. it's Layers of Fear, but in third person. an early 00s puzzle game, but simplistic and boring.

    just another Bloober Team's game.

While the game has a fairly good story and a very intersting split-screen mechanic, the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. There is no real enemies or combat. The Maw will just chase you in a few scripted sequences. Most of the time you're free to explore at your own pace. The game is basically a walking simulator with gameplay basically only consisting of solving some very basic puzzles, but there is no challenge here. The game is very short and can be completed in 6-7 hours which is both good and bad. Good because the lack in gameplay would have been very repetitive had it been longer. The game also suffers from bad performance (25-130 fps on an RTX 3090) with lag spikes every so often. I also had 4 crashes and 3 times I got stuck in invisilble objects, forcing me to reload. Luckily I only paid $30 for it, because it really isn't worth more.

Walking through the environments also revealed lots of collision detection issues; walking into invisible objects/walls, basic animation, and looking like the main character was floating just above the ground and placed in the environment, just like in the "good old days" of the original PlayStation. What I experienced as gameplay was walking around looking/backtracking looking for objects (with no run option to make it less tedious). Also suffers from serious performance issues. Loading stutter on a 10600K @4.9 GHz with an RTX 3080. RTX on ultra at 1440p brought the framerate down into the 30-40s, RTX on normal was 50-60s, and RTX off was 90 fps, even on scenes with a static, or almost static camera. It looks nice, but not that nice. Basically this a walking simulator with light puzzle elements in which you need to find things in the correct order, except less enjoyable than other games in that category I have played such as the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, What Remains of Edith Finch, Dear Esther, Stanley Parable, Abzu, Journey, The Unfinished Swan, and Rime. 2.

The Medium is one of those games that has so much potential to be an excellent game but eventually leaves mixed feelings. My main 2 problems with the game were first the constant annoying narration by the main character breaking the 4th wall and explaining to me the gamer how the story is developing, its a cheap technique and it destroys the atmosphere of the game, and second the lack of clever puzzles and heart pumping chasing, it also felt like the narrations that i mentioned previously like i was a dummy that had to be guided through so i don't lose and quit the game.

Apart from those 2 problems that can easily be fixed in my opinion and were present because the creators wanted the game to be accessible to a broader audience, the game is very good, it has great graphics/animations, a captivating story, great characters /acting and if a 2nd game keeps the all those good things remove the main character narrative and replace it with other more clever ways of explaining the story, better/more clever riddles and more difficult/stressful enemy encounters/chases it can be a 10.

A seemingly promising adventure game that is unfortunately weighed upon by frequent crashing, an annoying camera, easy linear gameplay, and unoptimized graphics despite looking like they came from a decade ago.

The premise of the game is as follows: Your character is an esper who can interact with a parallel spirit world, and her actions in either world influence the other. She has the ability to help spirits pass on, which is integral to the story. Everything takes place in a nightmarish, apocalyptic world.

Sadly, despite such an interesting premise, the game feels incomplete, as it features supernatural elements that fail to scare you, many underutilized gameplay mechanics, and a lack of exploration and interaction that could've and should've been capitalized upon. All you do is follow an unambiguous path holding forward for the majority of the game, with most of the side content being inconsequential.

The story was built to be discontinuous and gradually fed to you in the form of flashbacks, but that only served to provide confusion instead. The ending was also unbelievably random and abrupt, which made the game even more lackluster and makes you question whether the game may have been quickly wrapped up for release.

Overall, the game feels like an unoriginal mishmash of other horror adventure games. I cannot recommend this game in its current state due to all of the crashing, so I suggest testing it out first on a platform like Xbox Game Pass before committing. The game seems to be more stable if you do not exceed 60 FPS, so keep it at that.

I'm not really a fan of Bloober Games. I find their games boring without any actual gameplay, condescending stories that focus on the extremely negative stereotypes and aspects of mental illness, and a cheap attempt to capture nostalgia basing their games on 'Silent Hill' vibes with Amensia-like gameplay, failing at both. The Medium is just barely an exception, offering a slightly better story than usual, some great music (albeit again, basing it on nostalgia of Silent Hill), and is a very pretty game. But it still has those Bloober flaws. Mediocre puzzles, barely any gameplay, terrible gameplay when it has stealth, and overall just doesn't have a lot. The plot is straight forward and other than the graphics and music there isn't anything that is 'good' about this game. I don't get why people love them when the experiences they go for are executed far better than almost anyone making horror games right now. I didn't hate my experience with this game, but considering this is the fourth main title I've heard from them and how much they toted how it required new hardware to run, I expected better. Expand

    VISUALS
The game looks **** clean and incredible lookin. The attention to detail is insane.

    STORY
This is a story driven game and this is one of the main reasons why I gave this game a lower score. This type of story telling is really not for me. It's like Control where you need to read a lot of collectibles stuff to fully understand the story and at some point of the game you'll just feel lost. I'm a fan of the story but I'm not a fan of its storytelling. The story is tackling some really dark themes and the dialogs are well written.

    CONCLUSION
I think the game is decent, I didn't have much of a good time playing it but I can easily recommend this game on sale. Wait for it to be >60% sale

I really liked the atmosphere and story of this game. There are some technical issues though (crashes, framedrops), but nothing that really breaks the game. Not a big fan of the fixed camera angle. Was expecting a much more 'horrory' game, luckiliy it wasn't that bad ;-)

Oyunun yapımcısı Bloober Team'in daha önce cyberpunk temalı dedektiflik oyunu Observer'ı oynamıştım.

To accurately describe this game, it is a Narrative Driven Puzzle Game with Horror elements. The other reality is beautiful in how disgusting it is to look at. Everything is good in terms of art direction, music and sound. Sadly the puzzles are not entirely interesting. The dual reality brings out great puzzle mechanics, but the charm fizzles out relatively quick. The game really wants you to soak in all the great visuals in this game, which is nice, except for the fact that they restrict you to strictly walking in many areas. Exploring can become a bother very quick, as you slowly walk out of the corner that you thought had notes.

The story didn't resonate with me much sadly. It started great, a mystery on why the protagonist has her powers. You traverse a beautiful abandoned hotel resort, that has a really creepy vibe at first. But the story grinds to a halt as our protagonist gets side tracked and the momentum does not shoot back up as it originally started with. In a matter of fact, the game gives too much time to side characters, that barely add to the main plot of the game.

The main character barely has any distinct personalities. Her character is, "THE MEDIUM". Her distinctive qualities is that SHE TALKS TO DEAD PEOPLE. If that is one of her few distinctive qualities, it would be fine, but it seems her interests barely go any further than "I send dead people home". Did you know that she likes butterflies, motorcycles and might be interested in photography? You might be wondering if I spoiled you on something right now, but rest assured, even the devs don't think these are very important. She rarely feels like a character in a story and becomes a narrator most of the time. When characters are barely explored, I do not care much for them and their plight.

The game is not really scary and I do not know whether its because they failed to scare me, or they did not try to begin with. I played this game tension free, which is a first for a horror game. This is why I said "...with Horror aspects" at the start. It feels to me Bloober team used a horror background to add flavor to their puzzle game. Play with lights on for this game, you do not lose much immersion and you protect your eyes from strain.

The Medium is a psychological thriller with various simple puzzles, a whiff of horror and music like from Silent Hill. As a result, you will play the game mainly because of the storytelling and for its atmosphere. [Issue#310]

The Medium deftly ties all loose story ends and shows impressive art direction, but it lacks wholeness. The game feels like an artist who has too many ideas at the same time; he would grab a brush, then a pen or a piece of coal… but still cannot finish his masterpiece.

The Medium isn't an unflawed masterpiece. It's got some performance issues on PC and some jankeyness in unexpected places. However it has got this absolutely unique horror atmosphere, beautifully crafted worlds and some absolute heart-string pulling story moments. This is a successful return of the "horror adventure" game style from those golden oldies everyone fondly remembers. Bloober Team has done an outstanding job making this title and it's one hundred percent recommended to all fans of horror.
