    WINTERMUTE UPDATE: ok, 3 years of waiting for the story mode. The story is fine, at least it seems. What has been done is remarkable. But....
    but....bugs, glitches, wolves popping out of nothing, invisible wolves, wolves running madly, stupid checkpoints, story vicious circles that force you to start over again...and above all, Italian language (a feature promised in early access)    WINTERMUTE UPDATE: ok, 3 years of waiting for the story mode.     I played this game for 50 hours so far... and yet there is so much to be explored! the Game has huge potential, but now it is crucial to see toward which direction it will go.
    I have two different approaches to this game:

    1) Pure Survival Experience: in this aspect, the game is wonderful, no objective, no ultimate explanation of what happened, no ending. It's just you, alone, in the wilderness.
    Walking quietly in the snow, you look for animal tracks, collecting herbs and mushrooms, you hear, you see, you feel the environment.
    and while playing you start thinking: "it's getting late, better turn back and my way home, a shelter, a cave, anything to protect you from wind and snow...and you light a campfire, the night is dark and cold, wolves are howling, minutes, hours passing, pure relaxation.

    2) Survival with a scope: after some days of survival and exploration, you start feeling there is something wrong in there, too many corpses, all human activity ceased, what happened here? Surviving isn't enough, you start feeling the urge to explore and understand, you have a scope, there is an end to the game (apart from dying of course).

    In the end, what can I say, I love Sandbox mode, no clue, no objective, just you and nature. Very mature and relaxing.
    On the other side, what will be the Story mode? will it be another among countless catastrophic survival game that ends to be meaningless and lose their appeal after few game hours?

    I hope the developers keep improving the first aspect of the game, Nature, its mechanics, the environment, everything that is moving around you. Story maybe an intriguing part of the game, but definitely, this game is great for the atmosphere and the amazing details of the environment, wind, tracks, sounds, calories, cold, dehydration...

    I hope the game will improve more and more on this side    … Expand

    A truly amazing gaming experience.

    With an emphasis on atmosphere and exploration, Hinterland have beautifully crafted a brilliant game, although at the moment still in beta, and with just a sandbox mode (Nov 2015). It is essentially a game of balance. You need to gather resources, and be able to defend yourself at all times, from wolves, bears, the extreme cold, starvation,    A truly amazing gaming experience.

    With an emphasis on atmosphere and exploration, Hinterland have beautifully crafted a brilliant game, although at the moment still in beta, and with just a sandbox mode (Nov 2015).

    It is essentially a game of balance. You need to gather resources, and be able to defend yourself at all times, from wolves, bears, the extreme cold, starvation, dehydration, fatigue, dysentery, infection and falls.

    It taps into the innermost fears most have, fear of the dark, the unknown, vulnerability, loneliness and, of course, death. It does so in the most innocuous ways, leaving you always thinking 2 steps ahead/behind, and always looking over your shoulder. But make no mistake, unless you get mauled by a bear while resting in your sleeping bag, this isn't a jump-scare fest. The scares are slow burning, realistic and ever-present.

    In sandbox mode, there are currently limited areas to explore, but any new game takes quite a while to succumb to the inevitable, long dark. My record life span is 177 (in-game) days ... but I am working on that. I normally put aside two weeks to play, a few hours each evening.

    What I love most about this game is the crisply defined atmosphere. The weather sound effects in particular are amazing, whether indoors or outdoors, it always feels real. The soundscape makes up for the lack of variety in visible fauna, as they are always there... in the background.

    There are some downsides and bugs, which will undoubtedly be fixed/improved in time, but the game, even in beta is incredibly stable, or fixed very quickly by the developers when problems are raised.

    This review will need to be deleted when the full game is released, because it will probably be a completely different experience than it is at present, with a story, characters and an end game. It could well be the best game of 2016, and will no doubt win huge acclaim and awards.

    For now, this is one of the best games I have played in a long time. In an age where gamers are ever increasingly taken for mugs, (day 1 DLC anyone?) this is a refreshing change, and a hugely entertaining experience.    … Expand

That's where The Long Dark comes in. It's not a friendly game despite it's soft art style, you will starve to death, freeze to death or die to exhaustion (not to mention wolves).     This is absolutely amazing. Like Alice in rabbit's hole i felt inside. Game made my heart beat, like a gong! It awakens your nature inside and force you to made your critical decisions and mistakes. One to one, tet-a-tet with mother Nature is unbelievable experience! No zombies at all, no multiplayer and all it's negative, it's just your life, choose: be alive or be dead. Despite fact thatThis is absolutely amazing. Like Alice in rabbit's hole i felt inside.     The Long Dark, legendary game. Awesome graphics, if someone says "well they are a bit cartoon stylish" well so is borderlands and it does not make the game bad by any means. Environment, 3 large maps which are connected by secret routes and each of which contains some sort of hidden place "Easter egg". Starting difficulty is a great thing, you can choose your starting items and nature'sThe Long Dark, legendary game.     The time i died ...After about 250 days of surviving ( for a bad strike of misfortunes ), was the most painful death of all my video games life . If they nail the story mode it will be an awesome game . And please i will like a The Long Dark 2 with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter graphic !!

    Is this a computer game or a work of art?
    Whatever it is, it is so in a brilliant way. The experience is truly immersive, the scenic views are like beautiful paintings and the atmosphere takes you in all the way.
    The Long Dark is by far the best survival game out there even though it features no zombies.

With this, I can overlook some minor bugs and UI issues at the moment. Because I think, The Long Dark will be a very sound and professional product in the end.

    The Long Dark is already on a very, very high level - even in early access.
    Why? Because of the incredible amount of realistic details, such as

    + The weight you can wear depends on the fatigue of your character
    + If you walk up the wind, you are slower and need more endurance
    + The wind force has an influence on your felt temperature
    + After a snowstorm, many new branches are available
    + If you eat salt cracker, you get thirsty

    But that's not all. Further arguments:

    + A convincing I am-completely-alone-atmosphere
    + Well thought-out regions with many interesting areas
    + Food is scarce, ammunition even scarcer (collect arrows!)
    + Skill-system (you'll get better in making fire etc.)
    + Highly incentive ( "Do I survive the next day?")

    The graphics have their own comic-like style. Thanks to Unity Engine, it is very low on hardware resources.
    However, the setting is very impressing. If you are sitting in a hut and the winter wind blows outside, the fireplace flickers inside ... these are moments that only a few games can give you! I also like how the character expresses his emotions. He will integrate into what is happening, for example, when he groans from exhaustion.

    Conclusion: A very high-quality survival simulator with very realistic requirements. Although there are only bears and wolves as opponents, the game has quite its creepy moments.    … Expand

When played on Interloper mode, the challenge to stay alive, with Permadeath always waiting to end all your hard labor, makes even the most trivial mistake a game ending defeat. With the Story Mode, RPG, element in place, Hinterland has given the new player a way to learn the subtleties of the game while giving experienced players the information that they have been wanting to know about for years. Survival sandbox is amazing, especially if you play it on Interloper level. after the virtual freedom of sand-boxing somewhat didn`t like much the story mode, but its not a reason to fault the game, especially after the Redux.

    I haven't enjoyed a game so much in a very long time. Art design is mesmerizing, music flawless and the fact we get continuous updates even in 2020 it means that somebody still cares about this work of art. I enjoy the events as well and it keeps bringing me back to the game. I enjoyed all my 150+ hours (so far ) of game time. Is my favorite survival game with you vs nature I ever played.I haven't enjoyed a game so much in a very long time. Art design is mesmerizing, music flawless and the fact we get continuous updates even in 2020 it means that somebody still cares about this work of art.     the maps are good deisgned and made. the graphics are good for the style.

All the while you scavenge for supplies, whether it is by shooting deer, fishing or looting cabins in the quiet apocalypse. Beware wolves that are attracted by the smell of blood and the sounds of a cold survivor struggling to find his next shelter.

    Played like this, the game is a roguelike-like in disguise. When you die in survival mode, the only option is to restart. As you play the game, you learn to navigate the five (number to be expanded) maps, conserve your resources and get a grasp on the crafting system.

    Very fun game. Right now have been alive for 32 days on the third difficulty setting, having explored 2 of the maps and ready to craft a wolf-pelt coat.

    The story mode... Well... Animation, cutscenes and music is beautiful. The writing is bad and linear gameplay goes against the spirit of the game for my taste. We'll see how it develops over the coming year.

    Buy this game. You will fade into the long dark when you mistakenly go to rest in your bedroll in a blizzard and freeze to death. Then you will fade into the long dark after being mauled by a wolf. Then you fade into the long dark as you enjoy a beautiful vista, make a misstep and fall 30 meters to your death. It's a beautiful and quiet apocalypse.    … Expand

    Very unique graphics and awesome gameplay. Spend hour and hours and hours trying to survive. Haven't played the story mode, it wasn't out when I played the game, but sandbox is highly recommended!

It's one of the most beautiful games you'll play and it's got a real minimalist hud.

    I would have given it a 10 but for two reasons. Firstly there's a lack of 'auto walk' feature which is needed since you spend most of your time walking about the place, exploring or traveling. And secondly because there's a sort of lack of things to do in the late game when you're all set up, but they did address that somewhat with the latest patch which altered foraging, so you'll have to spend a lot more time foraging for firewood.

    The devs that are making this are also good devs, they don't mess about and they release updates regularly, so another reason to get it - it'll get regular updates, usually one per month.    … Expand

    One pleasant aspect of this game is the differences that the difficulty provides, making the game enjoyable for whatever mood one is in. Whether you just feel like wandering and trying to survive the starvation and cold, or if you are ready to brave all that this harsh wilderness has to offer, The Long Dark has the perfect balance of this.

    By far the best survival game i've ever played. If you turn of the lights in your room, put on headphones, this is by far one of the most immersive games ever. The devs are super involved and this is an early access game that i would for sure pay for, even though its something I dont often do.

    -You have the option of going for more exploration and hunting, or barely raking by in some super intense survival situations like starving, fainting, getting mauled by a bear etc...
    -Crafting an inventory is easy to manage
    -The art style mostly fits the game
    -Super immersive Audio
    -Great stat tracking of your deaths and tons of other stats
    -Simple UI
    -They just throw you into the game without explaining which makes it super rewarding
    -Permadeath makes it super immersive because you care about your life for once in a game
    Cons-
    -Some really gross textures, although its a small game so w/e
    -Can be a bit hard to learn some things
    Some of the controls can be annoying but not really a big deal
    -The skill system has potential but could use some fleshing out...
    You can't craft a ton, and the diversity of items could be improved, although its already fine i guess..    … Expand

    The Long Dark is a slow burn. One moment you might be appreciating the beautifully crafted frozen tundra, and the next you are struggling for your life with a pack of wolves. Every moment feels important, like a fight for survival. The smallest decisions can have lasting impact. One mistake can end your life. It is survival game like no other.

    Was kinda disappointed when Wintermute (Story mode) came. The atmosphere is amazing, musics are great, graphics are not bad, not sure about gameplay, story is garbage.

    have felt the cold and loneliness in this game. Setting of ten, a unique game of its kind that if you are a lover of extreme survivals you have to try. Recommended on high difficulties for an extreme challenge.

    Finally I found a realistic game about survival without zombies and mutants. Here you struggle with nature and try to survive. The game is very difficult.

    This is strictly a review of the Survival Mode, as I haven't tried the Wintermute Mode yet. This is my favourite survival game. There are a lot of playstyles you can adopt, making the game a new experience with each playthrough. To me, graphics/visuals and music are the real winners here, though. The experience delivered is perfect to the detail, bringing you into its world perfectly. It helps that I live in a similarly snowed-in area so I feel right at home. My only criticism, which takes off a point from the score, is the bugs that appear whenever a new map is implemented (which, by the way, are all a delightful surprise given that every update so far came for free with the base game, so in my 2+ years of owning it, its size has gone up almost a third of its entirety). I lost a 305-day playthrough to a death caused by a texture collision bug, which are the most common type of bug I've experienced so far. But they're rare enough to not impact the experience much, and I can't recommend The Long Dark enough.… Expand

    One of the best survival games out there, gives you the right immersion to keep going and keep playing. The only part I dont I like is quite recent, I don't the like the timberwolf mechanic, I think it breaks this immersion, but other than that I would give this game a try.

    I would wait until all 5 episodes are out. I really like the survival + campaign combibation. Atmosphere and art are great. Downsides are, that it often feels like a boring walking Simulator and the bizarre times he needs to do simple tasks. Non campaign mode seemed boring and pointless to me.

Getting lost in a whiteout is one of the most frightening things i have every experienced in my 15+ years of gaming. It is all too easy to get absolutely engrossed in this game and the sense of adventure and discovery keeps the game fresh through multiple survival attempts. Unlike some survival games, hunkering down long term is not an option and you always have to risk your very life in order to continue surviving in the cold, inhospitable world of The Long Dark. For fans of the survival genre this game is an absolute must own, especially since the developers are constantly providing new updates at no extra charge. The art style of this game also gives it a certain charm and uniqueness that I have yet to see another game in this genre reproduce; it may not be the nicest looking game but the art direction is so good and consistent that I don't even notice small imperfections since as a whole it is so well presented.
    Bottom line, if you're looking for an engaging, challenging, hardcore survival game The Long Dark is a no-brainer; and at a very reasonable price point. It's not perfect but i can confidently give this game a solid 9+.    … Expand

Your clothes get wet and you lose heat faster, you have to constantly look for more resources and, in the early phases, you almost never feel like you are completely safe from dangers. What would make it a 10/10 for me is to increase the size of the map, and make late games more interesting. There should be challenges (but very optional) that you can do to help your chances for the next challenge (each challenge rewarding something that permanently makes your character better (we have the backpack, moose sack ..etc, there should be more!) What makes me stop playing this game from time to time is when I feel like I don't have any other challenges to do other than just going through the routines surviving… Expand

My only issue with this game is that is doesn't allow me to kill and loot every person I meet along the way, which would be nice and appropriate for the theme. The carry weight is also minimal at 30 kilos.

    I never thought I would find so much satisfaction from simply starting a campfire and cooking food and boiling water. But this game made it happen. It's so rewarding finding just a single bullet and food in the middle of nowhere. Killing bunnies to eat them also feels sad, but life is tough and this is... Spart.... eh... Canada!

    I find the resources in the game to be very abundant even in Interloper difficulty, which causes me to travel all the time at slightly over 30 kilos. Food and tools are there and being that I avoid the dangerous animals all the time, I have plenty of stuff to spare. Hot Coffee is also life, as I drink it during snowstorms. Nice mechanic you have there.

    The story is good as well, but not too great. It has enough to keep you going and exploring. Speaking of exploring, the game rewards you a lot for this. Which is nice, since most open-world games nowadays are both huge and full of empty space. Not in the Long Dark. I hope to find Astrid soon, so I can kill her and cook her meat for dinner, while repairing my worn expedition shoes with her dried flesh. I want to craft a few snares using her guts, as well. Not interested in saving her in the slightest.

    Surviving in a harsh world has never been so engaging, threatening and relaxing all at the same time. Two thumbs up to the developers for this great work!    … Expand

    A different type of survival game, out in the wilderness with nothing to survive with it really tests your patience. Has a new story mode which is ok, but the main survival mode is a good challenge. Is a hardcore mode style game so perma death can be really frustrating but well worth it.

    An original approach to survival games and really enjoyed the mechanics and the atmosphere a lot. The story was rather dull in my opinion and some parts of the game -you'll know when you play it- were rather useless and didn't fit the overall atmosphere but just seemed to be there in order to prolong the game.

    The game can be relaxing, meditative, serene. And then it can be as intense as anything you've ever played. TLD is proof that a well-designed game focused on interesting decisions for player to make trumps expensive animation and hollywood pizzazz by a long shot. I fall asleep playing Tomb Raider or Horizon or God of War. When I play TLD, I decide to try a quick challenge and twelve hours later I suddenly realize I have work tomorrow and need to get my butt in bed.

    Как добавили сюжет я решил оставить свой отзыв. Когда я играл просто в выживание то это было на часок максимум, потом я начал ещё меньше играть и надоедало. Сам по себе забывал ее потому что знал что игре чего то не хватает и вот добавили сюжет и мне в неё хочется возвращаться. Может сюжет и не слишком добротный, но я считаю в игре не было определенной цели и из за этого она была неКак добавили сюжет я решил оставить свой отзыв.     The most interesting part of the game will be the first 50 hours because you are still figuring everything out and try to not die, but after you reach the end-game you will get bored very quickly, since the map is fairly small (although it takes a lot of time to travel through it) and there are no more things left to do or items to craft. There are only a measly 6 kinds of animals in this game, which is frankly pathetic (I do not usually use this word, but I can't help it), considering that wilderness is the theme of this game.

    I do not recommend playing this game in long sessions because you will just get fed up and not want to play it again. Trust me ;) However, it is a very relaxing experience if you only play it in short bursts during winter.    … Expand

    Gameplay is different in every part because of locations, equipment and weapon changing, you have progression. I think it is the most powerful side of the game. Developers give you different challenges, change your tools and possible solutions, they give your different aims with different gameplay, so I really enjoyed how they create difficulty and other stuff for you. Side quests are not so interesting as the main one, but they are not necessary and you can do most of them when you completing the main one.     One of the lowest sides of the game is the plot. He is bad sometimes and broke gameplay. The worst feeling I had with the second part especially with the bear. They don't give you a big reason to use other stuff than you have and fighting with him was really bad produced and non-interesting. Sometimes characters with which you communicate are braindead and don't have good reasons enough, so you don't want to believe them. The plot is boring most of the time and badly written.
    You will have a feeling that they should work more on this side of the game.
    Second lowes side of the game - Dialogue. Dialogues are just ordinary, sometimes boring. They don't give you funny stuff or something like this. As I said earlier characters in most cases can't impress you and don't give you the feeling that they have a lot of understandable motivation for tasks that they give.
    I think that game will be nice for survival mode because mechanics are good enough, and you can take a lot of hard, challenging situations that will be regardless for you, also the atmosphere in the game is good enough.
    The plot mode of the game will take 72 points from 100 from me. You will take some fun and will be exciting most of the time, but it's don't leave you impressed. They should save gameplay which we have and improve the story, re-work characters and dialogues. After this work game can take more than 80.

    The game generally boring. The maps are too big and you walked a lot. In this game you are doing same things again and again and again. The same foods same drinks etc. Everything is same.

    + Nice Atmosphere
    + Sounds

    - Can't change Difficulty during or between Levels
    - Far Walks (Time Killer) but it's kind of okay, because you are even more happy when you reach the Target
    - Sometimes Gameplay/Quests felt repetitive, especially in Chapter 3

    This could have been much better. The devs gave up on the story updates, and I'm going to be honest, walking to A to B when you don't know the map it's pretty impossible. But when you know the map the mystery goes away and this turns into a walking simulator, and the maps look pretty small after that. It's pretty hard, but also boring at (most) times.     The Long Dark, so far, is an amazing survival game. Survival games have been all about zombies or similar creatures, never the pure realistic struggle against nature. That's where The Long Dark comes in. It's not a friendly game despite it's soft art style, you will starve to death, freeze to death or die to exhaustion (not to mention wolves). It uses this kind of cell shading graphics yet

    Lazy development, lots of loading screens instead of animations.
    Unrealistic (even 2 kilo's of meat a day wont keep you from going hungry)
    Sooo much walking
    Dying of the cold with furniture and blankets al arround you (static items)
    Game feels verry arcade like, absolutly not a realistic survival game
    Verry repetitive

    Great game. However, on Story mode, you screw up once and dont even realize it and fix it right away, at one point, you WILL NOT progress, just stuck at a death loop. I recommend trying out other modes though!

    Just average :
    -Survival craft game well made, you have to struggle for your life
    -Basic story
    -Map too big, character too slow
    -A bit hard imo
    -Late quests are not fun, you spend most of time walking from point A to B

    Поиграл всего полчаса и понял, что это самый настоящий симулятор ходьбы. Графон на ультрах мыльный, объекты иногда в буквальном смысле состоят из нескольких полигонов.

Very tedious and boring. So, I stopped and skipped to episode 3 (female character). Started out pretty good, then it just turned sour about 1/4 through and I quit.     Survival mode is decent, but the Single-player (story mode) is utter garbage. Needs more testers because certain sections are just broken. One section has you square off with a wolf, the game recommends that you avoid the wolf. However, there is no way for you to avoid it, because no matter what, it will always go straight for you (almost like a bug).     Graphics are utter garbage, call it artistic but i call it garbage.

    Sound is amazing, they at least got that one right.

    Gameplay, is garbage. Why can I not boil water and do other activities? They should have allowed us to multitask. It's clunky, slow af, boring, and frustratingly annoying to play.

If I drink a bunch of water before going to sleep in real life, I wake up having to go to the bathroom, not on the verge of dehydration. This idea causes the game to devolve to a state of playing wac-a-mole with the time commitments you have to make to survive, while you're completely at the mercy of the spontaneous storms.

    I imagine the game will be better once it's out of alpha and is feature complete, but currently it becomes boring quite fast.    … Expand

    Bad graphics, weird and clunky gameplay, no source of story at all. This game has a good premise and poor execution. The cut scenes do have a nice artistic touch, although they majorly lack any depth.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Got this game for free and played around 2 hours of it. The first hour or so was simply ok, but then things went really south. Game threw me an extensive 15 minute exposition scene, which was extremely boring and cliché. I am not really a fan of survival games and this game was really mediocre at best. If you are a fan of this type of game this could be great but, in my case, this was a massive disappointment.… Expand

    Game Design follows the dated graphics, like in many games from the 2000s and 2010s this is not a real open world game. Yes, you can move freely, but transitions between Areas are only possible via specific routes. Imagine a chessboard, each field is an area in the game, to switch areas you must move through "transition tubes".

    Despite the game's release in 2017 in early 2021 the story mode is only 3/5 finished and it is expected to finish in 2022, 5 years after the release, with 10 years of development.

    Bugs are fixed very slow, with some bugs, like a cooking bug that did not make cooked peaches warm you up taking 1 YEAR to fix.

    Hostile animals can spawn in front of you and kill you, that is extremely bad as this is a rogue game, i.e. permadeath, where a "playthrough" can take weeks, which will then be lost.

    Instead of fixing the bugs, adding the final 2 chapters, the developers have been busy with porting the game to every game console, with ports for PS4, XBOX ONE and Switch. Of course there is also a MAC version.
    In preparation to the launch of Stadia they pulled the Game from GeforceNow, and put it back on some months later when Stadia was failing.

HORRENDOUS: animations, behavior patterns, hit-boxes, A.I... Hunting is horrible; deers can climb rocks and mountains, but your are unable to jump even 15 cm.     This is the best game ever. Except one thing - the episode 4. It's pathetic. I have been waiting so long to feel totally disappointing.

    I loved the first chapter... but then... what the hell? Why did you go from a fair size map to a HUGE map... I mean I tried to stream this game and I got bored.... 2 hours only walking from one place to the other and getting back to the same place...

    Bought it to play on Geforce Now. Yesterday the greedy developer pulled it out of the service. Refunded and **** every dev and publisher that does this.

    The Quiet Apocalypse isn’t without problems, but Hinterland's commitment to adding new content, while refining the experience over the years, has positioned The Long Dark at the top of the survival genre’s pecking order. The Long Dark is a must-play for anyone who is even remotely intrigued by it.
