    The Last Birdling is a game worth playing, especially if you enjoy a story of tragic love and friendship. It takes a timeless premise and puts just enough of a unique spin on it to make it feel fresh.

    The Last Birdling was kind of surprising in a few ways. It starts off as a pretty little story about two kids from species that are supposedThe Last Birdling was kind of surprising in a few ways. It starts off as a pretty little story about two kids from species that are supposed to hate each other and are both young and nice and grow to become friends against all the odds. Without spoiling anything I can say the story warps into a pretty dark, gruesome, story of survival and I loved it. You get to see the main characters mature from kids just trying to be friends into young adults making some very tough choices where sometimes you get two otpions and you like neither. That happens so little it is refreshing as most visual novels there is a choice that makes you the good or evil character but with The Last Birdling often times late in the game neither option made me feel like the hero. The art and music were well done. My only gripe is that there were a couple moments in the story where you don’t get a choice at how the situation is handled that I would have liked to control but overall it wasn’t a big deal.

    I played The Last Birdling on Linux. It never crashed on me once. I did encounter one bug but it was an engine bug. If I put the game in fullscreen mode it would always go to my monitor on the right not my left monitor regardless of which was set as primary. This was a bug with the Ren’Py engine not specific to The Last Birdling as it happened on every Ren’Py game I tried. It was fixed with the most recent version of Ren’Py (7.2.1). I noticed no spelling errors.

    I played my copy from Itch.io. I finished my first playthrough in just over 2 hours. There are several different endings so if you want to see them all you will get more time out of it. The game supported manual saving and had lots of save slots. I paid $6.99 USD for it and felt is was easily worth that if not more. I would have parted with $20 easy for it. If you enjoy visual novels, especially those with more mature stories I would give the demo a try.
